The Annual Quality Assurance Report (AQAR) of the IQAC Name of the institution Year of Report Guru Nanak College of Education 2012-13 and Research; Shivaji Talav, Tank road, Bhandup (West), Mumbai 400078. Part A: Plan of action chalked out by the IQAC in the beginning of the year towards quality enhancement and the outcome achieved by the end of the year. Plan of action chalked out by the IQAC in the beginning of the year towards quality enhancement . The Academic year officially commenced on 16th August 2011The meeting of the IQAC was held on 25th and 26th August 2011 The plan outlay for the year as mentioned in the previous AQAR report were considered to finalize the plan of action for the year, keeping in mind the current issues as well as future plans. The suggestions of the teaching and non-teaching staff were incorporated. The following were the areas of achievement that were focused on: 1.Activities of Research Cell: ● The college proposed to apply for University of Mumbai’s Minor Research Grant for four faculty members under the joint research scheme. In this regard Ms. Jatinder Kaur and Ms. Sujana Florence would apply as co-researchers for the grant,as also Ms Aradhana Gokhale and Ms. Jyoti Singh . ●The other activities of the research cell would be: (i) Organizing workshops, guest-talks with external resource persons (ii) Establishing linkages with other research bodies (iii). Developing the research section of the library (iv). Promoting meaningful research among faculty and students (v)Promoting International Linkages for collaborative Research. 2.Improvement in Infrastructural facilities and learning resources: The college infrastructure was extensively renovated in 2011. Additional facilities like electronic smart board, LCD, books and journals would be added in the coming year. The college

proposed to conduct Computer Literacy and Personality Development programs for the benefit of students 3 Seminar: The College proposed to conduct an International Seminar with Prof. Elizabeth Lee, from University of Hertfordshire, UK on ‘Creative Approaches for teaching English and History’. The college was a collaborating institution for the UKIERI project (2008-2011) .The seminar would be a step forward in extending linkages to future projects . Outcome achieved by the end of the year. The Academic year officially commenced on 16th August 2011. The college successfully implemented the various academic and co-curricular programs. . The following activities and programmes were successfully achieved:

1. Academic Programme:

The Credit Based Semester System was introduced by the University of Mumbai. Accordingly, the academic year was divided into two Semesters

Micro-teaching/Simulated lessons: The practical training of the students began with the orientation to the micro teaching. Students were exposed to the concept and importance of micro teaching. The orientation to each skill,was followed by a demonstration. Students were then guided to to make a 5 minute presentation of the skill before their peer group. The micro teaching workshop ended with orienting the students to the skill of integrated lesson, wherein they were to club the skills and give a 10 minute presentation. The demonstrations for micro-teaching lessons and integrated lessons were given by the faculty. This was followed by the lesson planning workshop . The students were grouped as per their methods and the respective method masters oriented them to the different aspects of the lesson plan and guided them in the methodology of teaching their special method subjects.

Four simulated lessons were completed,two in each Semester. They were lessons incorporating Concept Attainment Model, Brainstorming, Role Play, CAI and Games Demonstration Lessons were conducted by faculty in the various subjects. The use of recorded presentations through LCD was initiated for a few lessons. .Students was asked to incorporate at least one of the ten core elements as prescribed by the NPE in their lessons. Workshops / Seminars/Guest Lectures: In order to cater to the needs of the students in the present scenario the college organized various guest lectures on a wide array of topics.

4. Mr.Shreepad Phakre from Pacific training & consultancy services,conducted Personality development training from 16th December till 29th December

5. Mr.Laxman Gavali from IT Power,Global IT solutions conducted a Computer course training from16th December till 29th December

6. On 18-1-12 , Dr.Naaz Dhakam ,principal of Oriental college of education conducted an evaluation workshop covering year plan and unit plan.

7. Dr. Supriya Dekha oriented the students on writing resume and appearing for interview on 21-2-12

8. Smart board training was given in groups to students from 21.2.12 to 24.2.12.

9. The college organized a One Day International Seminar on ‘Creative approaches for teaching English and History ‘on 14th September 2011. The Seminar was organized with a view to acquaint teachers with a range of drama techniques to enable reading and writing fluency in English , to promote value development and to enable teachers to utilize drama effectively in the teaching of History . The resource person, Ms. Elizabeth Lee is Senior Lecturer in Education at the University of Hertfordshire, UK, specializing in how art, drama and powerful children's literature can support children's development The Seminar was well attended by school teachers, teacher educators and B. Ed students from several schools and colleges in Mumbai The seminar exposed the participants to several interesting and effective strategies like----- Freeze Frame ,Thought Tracking followed by Writing in role and Conscience Alley with characters from Indian and Western Stories depicted in novels and epics Like—The Ramayana, Mahabharata, Private Peaceful by Michael Morporgo, and ‘The Green children’ The Seminar was highly interactive and the participants expressed their deep appreciation of the same. The seminar was organized as a step forward in extending linkages to future projects as the college was a collaborating institution for the UKIERI project (2008-2011) The Seminar was organized separately for B.Ed students of the college on 12th September 2011. Co-curricular activities. As part of the students council various activities were organized throughout the year, which included celebration of teacher’s day, Guru Nanak Jayanti, Navratri ,Diwali, Christmas and Eid celebrations. Besides these in order to ensure the participation of all the students, co-curricular activities were organized in the college which included both group as well as individual events Neo Humanistic Society’s Elocution competition was held on 7th October. The topic was’ Role of Teacher in fostering Humanism’ The competition was judged by advocate and

founder Mr.Narendra Purohit .Trophies and Certificates were awarded to winners The competition was held in three mediums—English, Hindi and Marathi. Twins day was celebrated on 19th October. Students dressed identically in pairs and introduced themselves in a ramp walk. To celebrate cultural diversity ‘Tarang’ festival was celebrated was celebrated on 1.3.12 and 2.3.12 The festival included various competitions --Rangoli ,Mehandi ,Antakshari Cooking ,Group dance ,Group singing,Bridal Make up and ‘Mr.& Mrs.Tarang’ personality contest The college organized an educational excursion for staff and students at Keshav Shrishti Environmental Centre at Bhayandar. Sports day was held on 3.3.12 in college campus.All the students participated with zeal and enthusiasm in various field and track events.Mr.Rajan Yadav was awarded the men’s championship trophy & Ms.Swati Andhale was awarded the women’s championship trophy The college also successfully conducted the extension work program in collaboration with the department of adult and continuing education and extension for the academic year. The projects undertaken as part of the program included APY, SWS,ITP under the guidance of the teachers – in – charge, Mrs. Aradhana Gokhale and Ms. Jaspreet Kaur. The college has constantly encouraged students to participate in various inter-collegiate events and competitions. Our students bagged prizes for many events which are listed below: 1.Mrs.Neha Jadhav won 3rdprize for extempore competition at Pillai,s college of Education . 2. Mrs.Shikha Pandey won 2nd prize for story telling in Hindi language at Thakur college of education 3.Mrs.Kanchan Dube won 2nd prize for poetry recitation in Hindi languge at Thakur college of education 4.Mrs. Neha Jadhav won 2nd prize for story telling competition at Thakur college of educati. 5.The college won third prize for skit competition from department of adult and continuing education and extension at the Annual Festival ‘Udaan’ Twelve students participated in the skit. . 2.Infrastructural Improvement: The year 2012-13 has seen a lot of change and development in the physical aspect an infrastructure of the college which includes The renovation of the entire infrastructure consisting of the lecture hall, library,

computer room, conference room and method rooms. Provision of Electronic Smart Board Addition of books worth Rs. 971547/- to the library.

3.Extension/Community work: The college successfully conducted the extension work program in collaboration with the department of adult and continuing education and extension, University of Mumbai, for the academic year. The projects undertaken as part of the program included APY, SWS,ITP under the guidance of the teachers – in – charge, Mrs. Aradhana Gokhale and Ms Jaspreet Kaur. The college won third prize for skit competition at the Annual Festival ‘Udaan’. Twelve students participated in the skit.

For Community work, the college collaborated with Pratham a renknowned NGO and our students visited several Municipal schools and conducted various diagnostic and educational programs to benefit the school students and enhance their learning attainment under the Pratham banner. The program provided valuable insights about the problems faced by children in acquiring knowledge and skills because of inadequate facilities at school and home. 4.Evaluation Reforms: Feedback is collected from students for all Guest Lectures, Seminars and Faculty lectures. This serves as a useful measure to improve on our existing practices. 5.Faculty Development: As an initiative towards the professional growth of the staff, the college has deputed the staff members to attend conferences and seminars. Teaching as well as non teaching staff participated in seminars and workshops which are as follows:- ▪Miss Ponni Iyer attended Seminar on Advanced Technology Applications organized by Dell Computers on 17.8.11 Seminar on ‘Women’s Empowerment through financial literacy initiatives’ organized by Bombay Teachers Training College on 13.10.11 &14.10.11 Seminar on Orientation to Credit based semester system at MCT college on 5.12.11 ▪Mrs. Aradhana Gokhale attended Workshop on Capacity building on Gender sensitization Women’s cell on 23.7.11 Workshop on Contemporary Trends in Geographical Teaching organized by University of Mumbai, on 20.3.12 &21.3.12 Workshop on Enhancing of Teaching Personality organized by R.B.T. College on 29.3.12 ▪Mrs. Sujana Florence attended Seminar on Addressing Sexual harassment in Educational Institutions organized by University of Mumbai, Women’s cell on 6.1.12 & 7.1.12 Workshop on Enhancing of Teaching Personality organized by R.B.T. ▪Mrs Neena Behl ( Non-teaching Staff) attended Seminar on Professional and work Ethics organized by N.E.S.Ratnam college of Arts,Science & commerce on 14.10.11 6. Healthy Practices:

●Campus Interview: The college organized an elaborate program for three days 24.1.12, 28.2.12 and 29.2.12 during which principals of reputed SSC ICSE and IGCSE schools in and around Mumbai conducted interviews for student placement. This year, 10 schools participated and 35 students were offered jobs. The program benefited both the schools and B.Ed students and facilitates early placement in reputed institutions. Most of the schools are practice-teaching schools visited by the college ●Personality Development Course: Mr. Shreepad Parkhe from Pacific training & consultancy services conducted Personality development training from 16th December till 29th December. The program covered several modules that provided students with various strategies to develop confidence, self esteem and communication skills. The course was highly interactive and students enjoyed the variety of learning experiences that were effectively used to develop their self concept . ●Computer Training: Mr.Laxman Gavali from Global IT solutions conducted a Computer course training from16th December till 29th December. Students were provided with training on basics of computers and computer applications namely ‘Word’ Excel and Power-point. Students prepared their CAI presentations in their special methods. The program also updated students on the latest additions to these applications. Students were trained to prepare their own resume which was a felt need as expressed by them ,to apply for jobs ● Medium wise Tutorials: For the benefit of Vernacular medium students, medium-wise tutorials are organized. The specific academic grievances and difficulties are addressed by teaching staff for students of English, Hindi and Marathi medium separately. for each paper. Students prepare notes under the guidance of teachers. These notes are then made available to all These tutorial sessions have proved to be immensely valuable to students . ●Provision of Reference Material: Students were provided with printed notes for a few topics prepared by Faculty for all papers. The notes were compiled to help students to have a ready reference of the main points in each topic. Students conveyed their sincere appreciation as the notes helped to revise for their exams without having to visit the library. Part B:

In order to broaden the perspective of students and provide enriching experiences, college organizes a number of co-curricular and extra-curricular activities. Following gives some of the activities of the college;

. College arranges a series of Guest Lectures for the enrichment of the faculty and the students. Resources are tapped from different educational institutions and eminent personalities are invited to talk on current issues in the field of education.

A regular feature of this college is to make students participate in various intercollegiate competitions held in different educations institutions. Our students bag many prizes .

Community Work Programme is organized every year in order to sensitize students towards the problems faced by various sections of the society, especially the underprivileged.

We are fortunate to have our own playground. Ours is among the few colleges of education, which has its own playground. No wonder sports activities are given the utmost importance in our college. Sports meet is organized every year and students participate in various track and field events.

We prepare teachers with the right mix of significant traditional values & meaningful modern values. Prayer & paper presentation during morning assembly is a unique feature of this college.

Internal: 5 Workshops on Micro teaching, Simulated lessons, Macro- Lesson planning, Cultural training programme. 9.Research projects: As per the curricular requirements the students completed one action- research project each, dealing with issues and problems pertaining to the field of education, under the supervision of faculty. Besides, students also prepared project reports on Extension work as a requirement of the dept. of Adult and Continuing education, Univ. of Mumbai. 10.Patents generated if any: NIL 11.New collaborative research programmes: On 23rd February 2008, The College inaugurated the International collaborative research programme of the UKIERI.

Senior lecturer Ms Ponni Iyer is a member of the team that won the UKIERI research award ( 2008-2011). Other members of the team are: Dr Govardhan Wankhede From TISS Deonar, Mumbai along with Dr Mary Thornton, Dr Ivan Reid, Dr Patricia Bricheno and Dr Roger Green from UK universities The topic of Research is ‘Widening Participation: Diversity, isolation or integration in Higher Education?’ Four visits in all have already been made by Indian researchers to the UK The final dissemination conference was held at Tata Institute of Social Sciences, in November 2010.The Publication on findings of the research and other related contributions was She was the resource person for the International Seminar on “Creative approaches for teaching English and History” on 12th September 2011 for B.Ed Students and on 14th September 2011for several School and College teachers in Mumbai

Ms. Aradhana Gokhale ( M.Com, M.Ed, M.Phil, NET) and Ms. Jyoti Singh (B.A, M.Ed, SET) conducted a study on ‘A Study of Occupational Stress among Teacher Educators.’ Ms. Jatinder Kaur (B.Sc, M.Ed) and Ms. Sujana Florence (M.Sc, M.Ed, M.Phil, SET) conducted a study on’A Study of Emotional Intelligence of Student-Teachers’ 14.Citation index of faculty members and impact factor: NA 15.Honors awards to faculty: 16.Internal Resources Generated: NIL 17.Details of departments getting SAP, COSIST (ASSIST)/DST/FIST,etc. Assistance/recognition: NIL 18.Community Services: For Community work, the college collaborated with Pratham, a reknowned NGO and our students visited several Municipal schools and conducted various diagnostic and educational programs to benefit the school students and enhance their learning attainment under the Pratham banner. Improvements in Library services: The software ‘SOUL’ has been installed to computerize the Library functioning. The Library is being renovated extensively. It will be fully equipped with latest software for maintaining records and accessing books 22. New books /journals subscribed and their value: 371 books and 19journals, amounting too Rs.71698 23.Courses in which student assessment of teachers is introduced and the action taken on student feedback: Student feedback is obtained for all faculty members twice year at the end of each semester. The faculty is given feedback of students’ responses, personally by the principal, on an individual basis. Incidental supervision of lectures is also conducted from time to time by the principal and senior faculty, and the faculty is apprised of their performance.

24.Unit cost of Education: The Tuition fee for the Institution as stipulated by the Shikshan Shulka Samiti for the academic year 2010-11 is Rs. 49,240/-. 25. Computerization of administration and the process of admissions and examination results, issue of certificates: The office administrative process is managed with the help of administrative staff. Monthly meetings are held with Principal, office staff and class IV employees where plan of actions for better efficiency are discussed, and the extent of implementation of earlier plans are reviewed. The administrative process is computeried. The admissions are done by Maharashtra Vinaanudan Adhyapak Mahavidyalaya Sansthachalak Association through a CET. The CET forms are sold by the college. The Internal Assessment of the course is fully computerized 26.Increase in infrastructural facilities: The college completed renovation work in 2011. The entire campus was revamped to allow for a separate wing for the B. Ed section as distinctly apart from the school which is on the same premises. The rooms namely, the lecture hall, library, computer room , conference room and method rooms were renovated and equipped with the latest technology. 27: Technology upgradation: Electronic Smart Board was provided for enabling teachers to adopt the latest technology to communicate effectively in the classroom 28Computer and Internet access training to teachers and students: Mr.Laxman Gavali from Global IT solutions conducted a Computer course training from16th December till 29th December 2011. Students were provided with training on basics of computers and computer applications namely ‘Word’ Excel and Power-point. Students prepared their CAI presentations in their special methods. The program also updated students on the latest additions to these applications. Students were trained to prepare their own resume which was a felt need as expressed by them, to apply for jobs 29. Financial aid to students: The minority students apply for the Govt. of Maharashtra scholarship meant for them. 30.Activities and support from the Alumni Association: Outstanding ex-students-- (school Principals and merit holders), gave demonstration lessons and conducted Campus interviews for placement of student teachers in their schools. An Alumni Meet was organised for Ex-students on 4th February 2012. 31. Activities and support from the parent teacher association: Discussion of feedback of students showing poor performance in Examinations with their Parents/Guardians on an individual basis. This was appreciated by the Parents/Guardians who gave a very positive response. The Parents in turn supported the institution by providing resource persons as judges for various competitions held in the college. 32. Health Services: Sessions in Yoga and Meditation is conducted every year to relieve stress and promote mental and physical well-being for the benefit of students and faculty

33Performance in sports Activities: The college organizes sports activities every year, in various track and field events . The Annual sports day was held on 3rd March 2012.This year the following activies were conducted: Field events: Shot put, for both men and women Track events for Men: 200 mts race 100 mts race,50 mts potato race and Three-Legged race Track events for Women: 200 mts race, 100 mts race,50 mts lemon and spoon race and Three-Legged race 34.Incentives to outstanding sportspersons: Trophies and Certificates were awarded to Sports Champions among Men and Women (one each) Certificates were awarded to students standing in the first three positions in each event. 35. Student achievements and awards: The college organized several co-curricular activities for the students. The college held its annual sports meet . Students competed in various track and field events. Certifcates of merit were presented to the winners.Trophies were presented to the sports champions and outstanding students in various categories. The college has constantly encouraged students to participate in various inter-collegiate events and competitions Our students bagged prizes for many events which are listed below 1.Mrs.Neha Jadhav won 3rdprize for extempore competition at Pillai,s college of Education . 2. Mrs.Shikha Pandey won 2nd prize for story telling in Hindi language at Thakur college of education 3.Mrs.Kanchan Dube won 2nd prize for poetry recitation in Hindi languge at Thakur college of education 4.Mrs. Neha Jadhav won 2nd prize for story telling competition at Thakur college of education. 5.The college won third prize for skit competition from department of adult and continuing education and extension at the Annual Festival ‘Udaan’ Twelve students participated in the skit. 36. Activities of the Guidance and counselling unit: Mrs Jatinder Kaur , teacher-in –charge of the Guidance and counselling cell facilitated the activities such as personal, individualized guidance and counseling services to students who were

(i) Academically challenged (ii) Students with personal problems and (iii) Economically challenged students who required learning material and other

facilities The teachers established regular contact with the students under their charge and solved their various problems through individualized and group sessions during the year.

37. Placement services provided to students: The College facilitates campus interviews for the benefit of students. The college organized an elaborate program for three days 24.1.12, 28.2.12 and 29.2.12 during which principals of reputed SSC ICSE and IGCSE schools in and around Mumbai conducted interviews for student placement. These notes are then made available to all These tutorial sessions have proved to be immensely valuable to students. ● Provision of Reference Material: Students were provided with printed notes for a few topics prepared by Faculty for all papers. The notes were compiled to help students to have a ready reference of the main points in each topic. Students conveyed their sincere appreciation as the notes helped to revise for their exams without having to visit the library. 40. Linkages developed with National/International, academic/Research bodies: Ms. Ponni Iyer established links with the UKIERI (UK-India Educational Research Initiative) for collaborative research. The college has established linkages with the following institutions; (i) Nehru Science center, Worli, Mumbai: For the purpose of educational visit and training in CAI (ii)Dept. of Adult and continuing education and extension, Univ. of Mumbai for Extension Work (iii)Lions Club: For conducting Medical Camps (iv)Collaboration with NGO Pratham for Community Work (v)Collaboration with New horizon Child development Centre( NHCDC)to conduct Seminars /Workshops

The research cell concluded the UKIERI research program titled’Widening Participation-Diversity, Isolation or Integration in Higher Education?’ The institution has established Linkage with Ms. Elizabeth Lee of the Univ. of Hertfordshire for future possible collaborations The College celebrated the National days and Religious and Cultural festivals ---:Independence Day, Teachers Day Gandhi Jayanti, Navratri, Diwali, Guru Nanak Jayanti, Christmas, Eid, Guru Gobind Singh Jayanti and Republic Day among others. Part C: Detail the plans of the institution for the next year : The plans for the year 2011-12 are as follows: 1.Activities of Research Cell: ●The college concluded collaborative research at International level.Future Linkages will continue with Ms. Elizabeth Lee from the University of Hertfordshire who will visit the college this coming year to conduct workshops collaborate with school and college teachers on possible areas of research ●Four faculty members will apply for University of Mumbai’s minor Research grant for the coming year ●Other areas will be focused on such as: (i) Organizing workshops, guest-talks with external resource persons (ii) Establishing linkages with other research bodies (iii). Developing the research section of the library (iv). Promoting meaningful research among faculty and students (v)Promoting International Linkages for collaborative Research. ●Collaboration with New Horizon Child Development Centre: The college plans to host a two day conference on Learning Disability with specific modules to cater to different types of LDs for the benefit of school teachers, teacher educators and B Ed students. 2. Improvement in Infrastructural facilities and learning resources: The college plans to complete renovation work by 2011. The entire campus will be revamped to allow for a separate wing for the B. Ed section as distinctly apart from the school which is on the same premises.
