Religious, People, WildlifeThis is a vibrant land……

When speaking of "Tibet" we refer to the area, which is named the "Tibetan Autonomous Region" (the TAR), with Lhasa as the capital of this region.

When speaking of "Tibetan Cultural Area" we mean the areas traditionally inhabited by Tibetans, including the

areas of Kham (Currently Sichuan Kanze Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture) and Amdo (Currently Qinghai

Province and south of Gansu province).

In these notes we use the words "Tibetan Cultural Area" to refer to the whole Tibetan area including both the "TAR" and the eastern Tibetan areas of Kham and Amdo ---- by Tibetan Trekking (www.tibetantrekking.com)

The most distinctive feature of Tibetan architecture is that many of the houses and monasteries are built on elevated, sunny sites facing the south, and are often made out of a mixture of rocks, wood, cement and earth. Little fuel is available for heat or lighting, so flat roofs are built to conserve heat, and multiple windows are constructed to let in sunlight. Walls are usually sloped inwards at 10 degrees as a precaution against the frequent earthquakes in this mountainous area. Tibet has some of the world's tallest mountains, with several of them making the top ten list. Mount Everest (8,848 m) is the highest mountain on earth. Several major rivers have their source in the Tibetan Plateau (mostly in present-day Qinghai Province). These include Yangtze, Yellow River, Indus River, Mekong, Ganges, Salween and the Yarlung Tsangpo River (Brahmaputra River). The Yarlung Tsangpo Grand Canyon, along the Yarlung Tsangpo River, is among the deepest and longest canyons in the world.

The Potala Palace is a World Heritage Site, named after Mount Potalaka. The building measures 400 metres east-west and 350 metres north-south, with sloping stone walls averaging 3 m. thick, and 5 m. thick at the base, and with copper poured into the foundations to help proof it against earthquakes. Thirteen stories of buildings – containing over 1,000 rooms, 10,000 shrines and about 200,000 statues – soar 117 metres on top of Marpo Ri, the "Red Hill", rising more than 300 m in total above the valley floor.

Yongphuk Lhakang is the palace for the 1st Tubo King Niechi in the Yarlung River Valley. It stands on the top of a hill on the east bank of the Yarlung River, which is in the southeast of Tsetang County. The castle can be divided into front and back 2 parts. The front part is a 3-storey building, while the back part is a castle like tall building

Yongphuk Lhakang

The Jokhang is located on Barkhor Square of Lhasa, and part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site "Historic Ensemble of the Potala Palace," also a spiritual centre of Lhasa. For most Tibetans it is the most sacred and important temple. The temple's architectural style is a mixture of Indian vihara design, Chinese Tang Dynasty design, and Nepalese design. According to tradition, the temple was built for the two brides of the king, Princess Wencheng of the Chinese Tang dynasty and Princess Bhrikuti of Nepal. Both wives are said to have brought important Buddhist statues and images from China and Nepal to Tibet as part of their dowries, and they were housed here. Many Nepalese artists worked to construct this temple.

The atmosphere is severely dry nine months of the year, and average annual snowfall is only 18 inches (46 cm), due to the rain shadow effect. Western passes receive small amounts of fresh snow each year but remain traversable all year round. Low temperatures are prevalent throughout these western regions, where bleak desolation is unrelieved by any vegetation bigger than a low bush, and where wind sweeps unchecked across vast expanses of arid plain. The road to West Tibet was extremely difficult before 2006, the river bed is quite shallow and flooded everywhere caused the road blockage in July and August. To get to the holy Mt. Kailash becomes a challenge to both vehicle and divers,

According to legend, the Tibetan people originated from the union of a monkey and an ogress. The monkey, who was an incarnation of Avalokitesvara, is said to have been peaceful and contemplative, living alone in a cave and practicing meditation. Nowadays, Tibetans live mainly in Tibet and also in some areas of Sichuan, Qinghai, Gansu and Yunnan provinces. They have their own language and written script. Most Tibetans adhere to Tibetan Buddhism and Bön, although some Tibetans believe in Islam.Smaller tribal groups, such as the “Monpa” and “Lhoba”, who follow a combination of Tibetan Buddhism and spirit worship, are found mainly in the southeastern parts of Tibet.
