that migrated to the area, many ofwhich provided food for his table.During the long winter months theplace was very quiet and John hunted the countless wild animals thatabounded in the region. He had becorne accustomed to the quietness ofhis environment and even when thestorms "aged with wild fury, thethunderous noise of the sea poundingupon the headlands did not disturb him. But the peace he hadbecome accustomed to, was abruptlyshattered one winter's night, whenabove the noise of the raging stormhe heard the piercing cries of menbeing dashed to pieces on theiaggedrocks and drowned in the foamingseas. He tried desperately to be ofsome help to the shipwrecked crew, but it was not until daylight clearedthat the full impact of the tragedywas revealed to him. Amongst thepiles of wreckage which had washedupon the beach he found a dozenbodies frozen solidly and encased inice.

Although he would have liked tobe in a position to salvage as muchof the wreckage as possible, John'sfirst consideration was to rescue thebodies before the mountainous seastook them back in the recedingcurrent. Although he bore a grudgeagainst society he nourished a deepsympathyforthetwelveuniortunatesailors who had lost their lives inthat terrible storm. In viewing thebadly battered bodies, he becameanimated by a deep christrian spiritand he set to work, scarcely givinghimseli time to eat or sleep untilhe had all twelve bodies tuckedneatly in theircofIins. The weatherwas terribly cold at the time and theland congealed almost to stone, yetwith determined hands, John dugtwelve graves and buried the bodieswith as much respect and sympathyas it was pos ible for him to do. Hesaid a short prayer over each grave2.ndended up his ritual by sayirlg;''When I need help, I hope all twelve

With his work of mercy comple\..ed,Johnreturned to his normal wayof life, performing his daily choreswith strict regularity. That springhe finished a new boat he had beenworking on for some time and hewas very proud of his handiwork. It was much larger than anythinghe had ever built before and all wentwell until the time came to launchit. His original intention was thatas soon as it was launched he wouldsail it down to Placentia and sell itas the boat was much too large forhis use. But through some miscalculation on his part, the boat slippedoff the rollers he had placed it onand dug deeply into the soft earth. He tried desperately to get it back onthe roUers but he iust didn't have thestrength for such a great task, though crestfallen and weigheddown by a dilemma that seemed impossible for him to solve, thethought struck him like a bolt fromthe blue, to call on his twelvefriends who now rested peacefullyon the green slopes of his little kingdom. At first he felt scared of theidea, but then he recalled that hehad laboured hard to put theirbodies to rest, and now that he wasin difficulty it was only right thattheir spirits should come forth andhelp him in his great hour of need.

He debated the thought pro andcon and realizing that he had nothingtolooseandalltogain, heknelt

The Captainequally as quarrelsome as any timein his career would involuntarilygive vent toone of his violzllt outbursts of temper and looking towards the stowaway, he would say."there was bad luck attached to youthe day you came onboard my ship.I had a feeling even before we leftHavana that this voyage would be ajinks."

The supply of food and waterwhich the Captain had rationed o"tsparingly from their first day adnflhad now reached the point of exhau tion. The old Mate was not as strong ashe thought he was. The long daY3and nights without food and waterhad made inroads on his once strongbody and the crew knew he was asick man. During the night the Captain ordered the Mate's body wrapped ina piece of canvas and attaching ~

That eveninga violent storm broke upon them andraged with fuU fury all through th"night, but by daylight there camea lull and the crew could see how tohandle the boat. Towards the closeof that evening the Captain noticedthat the stowaway boy was lookingvery pale and sick and he didn'tshow any inclination to move fromthe position in which he was halilying, half sitting.

Speaking to the boygenlly, theCaptain said, "what's the matter lad,are you sick?

Lifting up his slumped head theboy looked into the Captain's faceand burst into tears. From the lookon his face, the Captain knew thatthe boy was very ill. "come nowlad," hesaid, consolingJy, "it can'tbe as bad as aU that. I'Uwrapyouup in my own reefer, It's cold youare. You'll be better when youwarm up a bit. Are you thirsty? Ifyou are I can spare you a small dropof water, I believe there's a dropleft in the keg." The boy nodded.

"There now, you feel better already," added the Caotain. "Lieback and keep yourseli warm. Don'tworry about the boat we'U lookafter her. Perhaps by this time tomorrow we'll all be rescued. The Hermit of Waterford ValleyMany and varied are the storie.

that have been told about the Hermit of Waterford valley, but no oneseems to really know who this mysterious stranger was. From information that can be brought to lighton this retiring person, it seems thathe came to SI. John's, early in theyear eighteen sixty-eight. The occount at hand says that he ~ived ina log-cabin about two miles fromBowring Park, up the WaterfordValley. The account goes on to saythat he lived byseUing the productsof the forest and the rivers and wasoften seen in the streets of St. John'speddling his products. In as far asitcanbegleaned, ithasneverbeendefinitely stated who this strangerwas. In appearance he was a youngman, although he wore a whisker, but it was thought that he sportedthe whisker to disguise his personality. He was tall and had a splendid physique and althogether seemed to have a pleasing exterior. Hismanner was that of a perfect gentleman. His dress was far from beingall that couJd be desired, yet henever accepted charity, taking onlyfor his goods their exaetvalue.

Without being actually melancholy, yet he seemed to dwell upona part of his life which seemed tobe far from pleasant. He ragged andunkept appearance helped to wardoff any friendship that might havebeen offered. The log-cabin inwhich he lived was situated in athick grove of woods, not far from

~~oba~~~;:n:'ctat~~fo~~:iv~~~~e::;;;when out berry picking, fishing orrabbit hunting, kept a safe distancefor it was fell that the Hermit didn'twant anyone trepassing upon hisdomain. And even after the Her-

mit had left the place nO one wouldgonearthelog-cabin,foritwassaidthat on the approach ofa person,a demon could be heard makingblood-curdlingcriesthatfrozepeopIe in their tracks.

When the time came for the Hermit to leave St. John's,legend saysthat he was dressed in the finery ofa well-to-do genUeman, wearing themost expensive jewellery And thefinest of clothing. Who was thismysterious stranger? Will his trueidentity ever be known?

Many suggestions have been offered by wayofa solution and someare as follows:- One source saysthat he was an escapee from a bankin London, where he embezzled thebank's funds and wassmarten'lughto make his escape to Newfoundlanrlbefore the strong arm of the lawcaught up with him. Anothcrsourcesays he was being hunted down forslaying a man in a drwlken brawlin a house in the South of France.Yet another source says he had beena high ranking Officer in the RoyalEnglish Army and was instructed toproceed to Ireland in charge of alarge contingent of Army personnel, for the expressed purpose of coliecling taxes from delinquent farmersand business men and failing tocomply with this law, the people ofIreland were to be dispossessed oftheir goods and their property andit was to be sold to thebighestbiddel' at a public auction. Knowingthat he would be shot without theoptionofatrial, herefusedtocarryouttheordersissuedtohirn, andsecondly, he had no desirewhatsoever to impose hardships upon thefarmers and business people of Ireland, heelecledtoescapefromthisawful dilemma, and he was fortu-

nate in being able 10 hire on as adeck-hand,onasailingshipcoming10 a Newfoundland port. From there

Still another source says 1hatitwass1ronglysurmised 1hat the Hermit, was none other 1han youngKevin O'Doherty, who was an exilefrom Ireland during the years eighteen sixty-eight and eighteen seven1y-five. It is historically true thatone of that name was banished fromIreland during the years specified, and a very romantic story is chronicled in connection with the exile.Ithasbeensaidtha1KevinO'Doherty, was loved by a gay young ladybelonging to the County Galway, hythe name of Eve May Kelly, afterwards known as "The Poetess ofthe Nation." Legend says that whenher lover was sentenced to sevenyears banishment from Ireland forcomplicity in an outbreak which occurred in the Town of Galway, EvaMary Kelly vowed that she wouldfaithfully await the return of herlover to Ireland, where they wouldthan be united in marriage.

Was Kevin O'Doherty actually theHermit of Waterford Valley? Thedates of arrival and departure ofthis mysterious person seems to coincide with the facts. What bet1er place could a lovesick personlabour through the long years ofwaiting and dream of the peace andlove that would be his when hissojourn in exile would beover, thanin this dellghtful Waterford Valley,so redolent of green Irish fields andlovers whispering waters?

What a great pity it is that theexact spot on which the Hermit'slog-cabinstood,cannotbepointedout to young lovers of this generation.Whatromanticmemoriescouldbeconjureduponthatspot, asone would go back in retrospect anddwell upon the seven long lonelyyears that Kevin O'Doherty,or whoever the person was must havespent in that beautiful place ofseelusion, while awaiting the shacklesof bondage to fall from his person, and to dream of the day when hewould be united in marriage withthe one who so truly awaited thereturn of her exiled lover.
