Janet’s Jottings

Dear Friends,

These weeks after Pentecost, known as Ordinary Time in the liturgical calendar, eventually will cover more than half of this church year (May 16 - November 26). In terms of all that is happening around us, these days seem extraordinary in many ways.

For those of us who call Northeast Ohio home, the past 10 days have been a time for celebration. The curse of just missing out on major sports championships has been broken. The Cleveland Cavaliers brought home the trophy in record-breaking style!

On the heels of that euphoria, the city is now in its final preparations for hosting the Republican National Convention. An election cycle unlike any other in memory, this event is accompanied by much uncertainty. And conventions are only the beginning.

Recent natural disasters, from flooding in West Virginia and Texas to fires in California and the Desert Southwest, have wrought paths of death and destruction. The scope of these tragedies is devastating and the recovery process daunting.

The world news is difficult to absorb. Great Britain’s vote to leave the European Union is accompanied by global economic uncertainty. There is news today of another terrorist bombing, this one at the major international airport in Istanbul, Turkey.

Add to all of these examples of extraordinary events the many in the life of our church family, and it becomes abundantly clear: We are not living in ordinary days. But then, has there ever been a time of ordinariness? Only in retrospect.

Surrounding us and sustaining us in times that are anything but ordinary is the extraordinary grace of God. Allow that grace to beckon you to an extraordinary way of living, gracious toward others and grateful to God.

Love,
