THE PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Dear Sisters:
I thank God for you and your wonderful mission spirit. Individually and collectively we can DO A NEW THING! I am truly grateful for your donations to our district and conference mission projects:
- You generously donated to the UMCOR cleaning bucket project; you purchased and assembled layette kits, birthing kits and school kits;
- You volunteer week after week at the Bethlehem Senior Center to serve lunch, host birthday parties, engage the seniors in crafts, facilitate Bible study and much more; and
- You answered the call this summer to prepare and deliver nutritious meals across the city to children in need through the Smart Lunch, Smart Kid program.
As always, remember to let us know when you are having special programs or need a visit from your district or conference team. (See Page 2 of this newsletter for highlighted district and conference meetings and events.)
You may receive your UMW program book and prayer calendar when you attend district and conference events. Call the resource center at 1-800-305-9857 or order on-line at http://www.umwmissionresources.org/.
Lastly, my new address is: 880 Clifton Springs Close, Atlanta, GA 30349-8727. My home telephone is 404-349-9306 and cell 404-229-7214.

THE VICE PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Greetings Sisters:
I hope that everyone is having an enjoyable and relaxing summer. As we approach the fall season, I look forward to connecting with you at our various meetings and events.
I encourage you to stay excited about the work of the United Methodist Women. You only have to look to our upcoming fall events to see that the work continues:
Taliah Reid, our MNO Chairperson, and her committee are hard at work planning the 20, 30, 40 Something event on September 21st at Headland Heights UMC.
Lydia Miller and the women of East Point Mallalieu UMC are preparing to receive us for our Annual District Meeting on October 20th.
I cannot thank each of you enough for all that you are doing in preparation for these events.
Ladies, let us show our support to our sisters planning these programs by our presence and participation.
Blessings,
Jackie
Jacqueline W. Rose Vice-President, ACPK UMW
A WORD FROM THE TREASURER
As a United Methodist Woman please consider challenging yourself to give above your individual pledge and give to the five channels of giving, including candleburning. The bonus of becoming a Rainbow Woman is that giving to all the channels will ensure that your unit is a Five Star Plus unit.
Bettye Cornelius Treasurer, UMW Atlanta College Park District
SPIRITUAL GROWTH
Hello ACPK UMW,
I know all of you are enjoying this summer. As you plan and prepare for the rest of the summer remember to keep God in all that we do. Vacations are great ways for us to restore and revive ourselves, but let us not take a vacation from God.
God is our greatest source of restoration and power. So let us P.R.A.Y. daily (praise, repent, ask, yield). Soon, we will be back to doing our UMW activities and meetings. Please remember UMW in your prayers.
Enjoy the rest of your summer. Be safe and be blessed!
Peace and Blessings,
Audrey

‘STEPS’ INTO THE 2013 PINK RIBBON WALK
In this photo, ACPK UMW District Historian, Lamarian Dabney (left) of New Spirit UMC, and ACPK UMW District Secretary and Team Captain, Sherole Thrash (2nd from right) of Central UMC.
In Georgia, breast cancer is the leading cancer diagnosed among women. The Pink Ribbon Walk is an annual initiative to raise funds to establish and operate a full service Mobile Breast Clinic for women residing in underserved communities in Georgia.
This unique mobile breast clinic will facilitate remote screening and diagnostic services. It will provide screenings, diagnostic services, treatment referrals, education and access to clinical trials to medically underserved Georgians who live in urban and rural area of our state, where the lack of transportation and resources are obstacles to adequate cancer detection and treatment. This complete diagnostic care will make the mobile clinic historic. It will be the first of its kind in Georgia, and among the first in the nation. United Methodist Women of the Atlanta College Park District were well-represented in the 9th Annual Pink Ribbon Walk (PRW) Saturday, July 20, at Piedmont Park in Midtown Atlanta.
INTERFAITH CHILDREN’S MOVEMENT HUMAN TRAFFICKING RESOLUTION PASSED
UNANIMOUSLY AT 2013 ANNUAL CONFERENCE
700. Resolution to Amend Guidelines for Hosting Annual Conference Whereas, the commercial sexual exploitation of children (CSEC) in Georgia continues to be a plague to our state and region; and
Whereas, the United Methodist Women includes human trafficking as one of its missional priorities; and
Whereas, the United Methodist Women partners with End Child Prostitution and Trafficking – USA (ECPAT-USA) to work in the hospitality industry to end CSEC; and
Whereas, ECPAT-USA works with the global hospitality and tourism industry to establish The Code to encourage the practices of: establishing an ethical policy against the sexual exploitation of children; training personnel and staff members; introducing a clause about being a member of The Code in contracts with suppliers; providing information to travelers in the form of brochures, Web pages or other materials; providing information to “key persons” at the destination; and reporting annually on the implementation of actions associated with these six criteria; and
Whereas, the North Georgia Conference has been in partnership with the Interfaith Children’s Movement since its inception in order to address the plight of minors who have been trafficked; and
Whereas, in 2012 Interfaith Children’s Movement launched its “Ask Before You Book” campaign to raise awareness within the faith community and the hospitality industry of the commercial sexual exploitation and trafficking of children in Georgia; and
Whereas, in 2013 the Georgia General Assembly passed legislation requiring the posting of the National Human Trafficking Resource Center Hotline in all hotels across the state;
Whereas, in 2013 the State of Georgia began addressing demand for CSEC through its “Georgia’s Not Buying It” pledge campaign;
Therefore, let it be resolved that the guidelines for hosting annual conference be amended so as to include a recommendation that the hotels making up the 2,500 bed requirement be signatories to The Code.
Let it further be resolved that the application for submitting a bid to host annual conference include an opportunity to record if a hotel has signed onto The Code.
Respectfully Submitted,
Dave Allen Grady, Chair, Leadership Ministry Team Sue Raymond, President, North Georgia United Methodist Women Pamela Perkins Carn, Coordinator, Interfaith Children’s Movement

(continued from Page 5) One of the many PRW teams is the Celebration of Life STEPPERS organized by the Cancer Support Ministry of Central UMC. This year’s team included members from other churches, including our sister church, New Spirit UMC. As team captain, I am grateful to my ACPK UMW sisters for your generosity and commitment to support this vital ministry. Our team consisted of 22 members and contributions totaling $1,636.00 toward the overall PRW goal of $100,000!
This annual event is sponsored by Sisters By Choice, Inc., (SBC) a support group organization founded in 1989 by Dr. Rogsbert Phillips-Reed. Dr. Phillips-Reed saw the need for programs that would increase public knowledge and awareness of breast cancer to reduce the mortality and morbidity of the disease. Initially formed as a support group for women diagnosed with breast cancer and their families, SBC has evolved into a multi-faceted organization serving women in Georgia. In a brief conversation with Dr. Phillips-Reed, I asked her about the future plans for the PRW since the mobile clinic will be purchased this year. She told our team that we still have lots of work to do and that the PRW will continue for years to come. She said that next year’s goal will increase to $150,000 and eventually up to $500,000 in years to come. These funds will support and maintain the long-range goals of the Mobile Breast Cancer Clinic. Thank you Celebration of Life STEPPERS and supporters for ‘Doing a New Thing!’

To an old drifter named Jones with a gift for seeing what others miss, there is no such thing as a dead end. It only takes a little “perspective,” he says, to recognize the miracles in our moments, the seeds of greatness tucked into our struggles. Based on a remarkable true story, The Noticer beautifully blends fiction, allegory, and inspiration. It provides simple, yet powerful distinctions about love, relationships, value, and integrity and will inspire readers to take that first step toward a major life change.
