What is the greatest act of love which one can give for the sake of another? Jesus defines friendship - the mutual bond of trust and affection which people choose to have for one another - as the willingness to give totally of oneself - even to the point of laying down one's life for a friend. How is such love possible or even desirable? God made us in love for love. That is our reason for being, our purpose for living, and our goal in dying.

THE PASTOR’S LETTER Father John Gabriel

Dear Parish Family, On this weekend when we celebrate mothers, home and family, we turn our thoughts as a community of faith to those who lack the very things for which we find ourselves so grateful. We want to officially announce this weekend our parish participation as a host congregation for “Family Promise” of Union County. Family Promise is an organization that helps to fight homelessness by helping families find permanent housing and employment. Family Promise allows families who are homeless due to job loss, illness, family breakup and other unforeseen events, to remain intact, comfortable and safe during this difficult period in their lives. At the core of Family Promise are the religious congregations of Union County that each takes a turn providing a home for these families. Having had involvement with a similar program in Essex County, I wanted us as a parish to reach out to the homeless here in our own county. Therefore, our parish will join with the other congregations who partici-pate in Union County (Catholic churches, Protestant churches and synagogues) who offer themselves as a shelter for others in need. From June 28th until July 5th, five homeless families will live in Hatcher Hall as our guests. Our parish family will be responsible for providing places to sleep (we will borrow partitions that will give each family some private space to relax together from St. Michael’s Church in Cranford) and also provide nutritious meals for our guests. So, we are in need of people who will help set up, cook and serve meals (only breakfast and dinner- during the day these families will be taken to the Family Promise Center in Elizabeth where children will have activities and parents will be assisted to look for housing and employment), and we are in need of overnight hosts who will sleep in Hatcher Hall along with our guests to be available should any need arise- 2 overnight hosts each night. We are also in need of donated and/or loaned items. Elsewhere in this bulletin you can find a list of things you can do concretely to be part of this beautiful and important ministry in our parish. In this important venture, we will be partnering with Temple Sha’arey Shalom here in Springfield. They will act as our support congregation and will work together with us during this week. One added bonus for us: our guests will be with us on Independence Day, so we hope to have an outdoor BBQ for them along with the opportunity to enjoy Springfield’s Fourth of July fireworks from our parking lot! As we honor our own Mothers this weekend, what a great way to show our thanks: by praying for and helping other mothers and their families to cre-ate a home where they can dwell together as one. It is my hope that we can make this a yearly commitment to Family Promise and, depending on how it goes this time, perhaps we can even commit to a second week some other time throughout the year. Speaking of family, I wanted to say a heartfelt word of thanks to all of our parish family who participated in any way to make this year’s Parish Festival such a great success. I’ve been told that this year we had more volunteers than ever before helping out! What a great blessing, and a positive sign for the future of our parish. It was so wonderful to see it all come together: people cooking, running games, cleaning up, acting as security, each contributing whatever they could for the good of us all. I want to especially thank those who organized this effort: Joe Furner, John O’Reilly, Dave Wightman, Robert Wright and Marilyn DePrimio who work tirelessly for the success of the festival (some of them even use a week of their vacation from their own personal jobs to be here full-time that week!). I also want to thank Patty Furner and those who assisted her with the Tin Can Auction, Jackie Canavan in the rectory who works with the town in securing the necessary permits and other organizational details, and Jimmy Guarino for providing and organizing all of the food. Special thanks also to the Springfield Police who were very present and, as always, were there when we needed them. There are so many others, too many to name in this bulletin, who gave so much to make this a success. God knows who they are, and He will reward us according to our generosity. May He continue to bless us as His family here in Springfield! In His Love,

~ Fr. John

“As believers in God, how can we fail to see that abortion, euthanasia and assisted suicide are a terrible rejection of His gift of life and love? And as believers, how can we fail to feel the duty to surround the sick and those in distress with the warmth of our affection and support that will help them always to embrace life?”

WELLNESS MINISTRY

Over the past few years Eileen Runo, a parishioner at St. James, has been doing a great service by calling fellow parishioners who live alone to make sure they are well. These weekly phone calls have meant a great deal to many people. To continue this service more volunteers are needed. If you are interested in becoming involved and have a few minutes during the week to make some calls, please contact Nancy Ma-honey-Raj: [email protected] or call Nancy (201) 247-4359.

NATURE AND HIKING CLUB Spring finally has sprung and the St. James Nature and Hiking Club is making its return to the parish. This spring we will start off with a new site--Lenape Park--which winds throughout parts of Mountainside, Westfield and Springfield, possibly all the way to Union. We will explore this new-found treasure beginning at 10:30 am. on Saturday, May 16. Walkers will meet in the Echo Lake parking lot, just off Springfield Avenue, Mountainside, and walk back across the street to Lenape Park, which starts adjacent to Williams Nursery in Westfield. We hope to have a pleasant stroll through this outstanding area park. Please join us as we walk through one of Union Coun-ty's most beautiful natural areas. This "club" is an infor-mal gathering of those who want to enjoy nature and get in better shape. No forced marches or anything--just a nice, easy walk. If you plan to attend, please call Bob or Joan Faszczewski at 973-218-0046 up to 11 pm on Friday, May 15 or E-Mail us at:

My Dear Saint James Parish Family, I am so happy to share with all of you the joyful news of my priesthood ordination. I will, God will-ing, be ordained a priest on Saturday, May 23 at the Basilica Sacred Heart Cathedral in Newark. I invite you to share with me in this joyous moment for my life when I celebrate my first Mass of Thanksgiving at Saint James Church on Sunday, May 24, 2015 at 12:00 noon, a reception following mass in the school building.

I thank God for calling me to His priesthood and I also thank all of you for your prayers and support during my journey to this glorious day. In a very special way I wish to thank Father John Gabriel who, having been the Director of Vocations, when I came to this beautiful country and is now the Pastor of Saint James. I also thank Monsignor Bill Hatcher, God rest his soul, who for three years accepted me and helped nurture my vocation in this welcoming community of Saint James; and of course, Father Jim Worth whom in so many different ways has been my friend, mentor, and like a father to me. May God bless all of you and continue to guide us towards a fuller common of love and faith. In Christ,

~ Deacon Luis Fernando Diaz Romero

DRESS TO IMPRESS A sign at a classy restaurant read: “Dress to impress-no denim tops or bottoms, no tee-shirts or jerseys, no flannel shirts, no mini skirts and spaghetti straps, no baseball caps, no combat/hiking boots, no tennis shoes.” Below in larger print: NO EXCEPTIONS! Many who come to Church would not be allowed to enter that restaurant. Our Lord deserves fitting worship. Having style can be achieved without losing good taste.

Let’s enter God’s house with good sense.

PARISH SCHOOL NEWS

Mrs. Patricia Dolansky Principal

Dedicated parents, parishoners, and community mem-bers have always helped keep our school going. The Home School Association (H.S.A.) works hard to pro-vide programming that enriches our children’s educa-tional experience, foster a spirit of partnership between home and school, and assist with school fundraising. In addition to the H.S.A., Saint James has a School Adviso-ry Board, the SAB. Together with Fr. John and Mrs. Dolansky, the members of the SAB are: Joseph Skin-ner, Chair; Janet Cariello; Vanessa Cordeiro; Colleen Duffy; Ana Harper; Mary McElroy; John Mailley; Sidnee Pinho; Joanne Roethlin; Mary Speckhart. The Archdiocese states: The role of the SAB rests exclusively in the areas of strategic plan-ning, finance, facilities, marketing, and development activities. The SAB leadership fosters an environment which promotes Cath-olic values, long-term strategic planning and financial stability, complementing and supporting the school’s mission to nurture through its religious and academic curriculum and extracurricular programs the spiritual, moral, intellectual, physical and social growth of students. The SAB advises the Principal who works collaboratively with the Pastor and the Board. The SAB’s purpose is to: represent the best interests of the school; oversee the school’s planning, finances, and facilities; assure that the school meets its marketing and development goals and objectives. Individual SAB members are expected to: attend all board and committee meetings and show commitment to board and school activities; be informed on issues and agenda items in advance of meetings; contribute skills, knowledge, and experience as appropriate; support all deci-sions of the full board; assume leadership roles in all board activi-ties as appropriate; participate in board professional development.

Many thanks to all who support our school!

All information regarding Religious Education is posted on our website: www.saintjamestheapostle.org I ask that you please do not bring your registration forms to the parish school. Either come during our office hours or drop them in the rectory mail slot — no need to even ring the bell! All classes for next year are dependent on volunteers willing to teach, so please consider giving back to your parish by sharing your love for Jesus with our children! “Like” us on Facebook to receive the most up to date parish events. Religious Education is an ongoing formation from Grade 1 (Kindergarten is optional) through Grade 8; with the Sacrament of Confirmation taking place in the Fall of 9th Grade. If your child has not received continuous religious education since receiving the Sacrament of Holy Communion, please call the Religious Education Office. If your child receives special accommodations in public school please let me know.
