FLOWERS BY THE TABERNACLE For The People of Saint James

When Jesus preached the gospel message he called others to follow as his disciples and he gave them a mission: "to catch people for the kingdom of God." What kind of disciples did he choose? Smelly fishermen! In the choice of the first apostles we see a characteristic feature of Jesus' work: he chose very ordinary people. He chose these individuals, not for what they were, but for what they would be capable of becoming under his direction and power. When the Lord calls us to serve, we must not think we have nothing to offer. The Lord takes what ordinary people, like us, can offer and uses it for greatness in his kingdom. Do you believe that God wants to work in and through you for his glory?

SAINT JAMES THE APOSTLE CHURCH BULLETIN 638 :: JANUARY 25, 2015 PAGE 3

Dear Parish Family, Some of you may remember Fr. Everest Baniyet from last summer. He came to St. James Parish to speak at all the Masses in August about the work of the church in his home country of Nigeria. During his visit, he told us that his bishop had given him permission to study moral theology at our seminary for the next several years. His only problem was that he needed a place to stay. Since we had an extra bedroom in the rectory, I was happy to welcome him to St. James while he studies. Fr. Everest arrived last week and was appointed to residence in our parish. Fr. Silvano and I are most happy to welcome him. It’s always wonderful to have more companionship in the rectory, but we are also hap-py because we know of the hospitality and kindness of the people of St. James, and this will be a great support for Fr. Everest as he spends this time in a new country. I asked him to tell you a bit about himself. Let us keep priests and vocations in our prayers, especially during this Year of Consecrated Life. Welcome Fr. Everest!

WHO IS THIS FR EVEREST? Rev. Fr. Everest Peter Baniyet-Njei was born in 6th May 1974 to a farming cou-ple, Peter and Justina both were Christians. I am from Kaduna State, Northern part of Nigeria. However, during my High School at a tender age, I lost my parents. I am the only child of my parents with seven(7) cousins that I considered as my blood brothers and sisters. In order to continue with my education after the death of my par-ents I was brought up under fosterage. I was taken into care by a catholic priest whom I considered a good Sa-maritan. The priest was the rector of the High School and I was placed with a foster family. I was raised and trained as a foster child by Mr. David Bowyer, a British citizen, married to a Nigerian woman named Teresa. This generous family played a crucial role in ensuring the safety, permanency and well-being of my livelihood in their care. Having finished my Philosophy and Theology at St. Augustine’s Seminary Jos, Nigeria I was ordained priest on 11 August 2001, Most Reverend George Dodo. However, after two years of my ordination I lost one of my foster parents Teresa (may the Lord rest her soul Amen). I became an orphan again but now I was as a priest. I was assigned to different parishes in my diocese to work as an associate priest, after five years of being a Parochial vicar I was assigned as a Chaplain to the Young Catholic students in a secular College. Before I became a Chap-lain I had worked with different Ministries in the diocese, the ministries are; Religious Education, Catholic youths, Bible studies and School of Evangelization. However, after working for five years as Chaplain in a college, I needed to be well equipped and knowledgeable in order to teach and shepherd the people entrusted into my care. The Bishop consented to this idea and is allowing me to further my studies. I received admission into Immacu-late Conception Seminary School of Theology, at Seton Hall University. Initially, I had a problem with accommo-dations, I contacted Fr. John Gabriel who I met when I came here on 10 August 2014 for MISSION APPEAL, in his kind gesture he extended a hand of friendship and hospitality and accepted to house me in your magnifi-cent Parish Rectory. I remain eternally grateful and thankful to Most Reverend John J. Myers the Arch Bishop of Newark, Rev. Fr. John Gabriel the pastor, Fr. Silvano Kim the parochial vicar and the good people of St. James Parish, one and undivided family. I pray and hope for God’s blessing and protection to all through Christ our Lord, Amen. Once more, I say to you all THANK YOU!

In His Name,

~ Fr. Everest

WEEK #6

THE SEVEN PILLARS OF CATHO-LIC SPIRITUALITY

Have you ever felt disillusioned about your faith and filled with doubt? Matthew Kelly will take you on the adventure of a lifetime designed to help revitalize your spiritual life. Bold, practical, and inspiring, he will help you rediscover the true meaning of life as expressed in the seven pillars of authentic Catholic spirituality. One of our most popular talks for many years now, this CD is sure to stir your soul and invigorate your spiritual life.

WEEK #7 WHY A PROTESTANT PASTOR BE-

CAME CATHOLIC

Dr. Scott Hahn explains through his legendary testimo-ny how he was militantly anti-Catholic but self-driven to seek the truth. This ultimately led him into the Catholic Church. He soon became an ardent defender of the Faith and one of its most passionate promoters.

We hope you enjoy and use this kiosk often!

CANDLE BLESSING ON THE FEAST OF THE PRESENTATION MONDAY EVENING, FEBRUARY 2, 2015 AT 7:00PM.

On February 2nd the Church celebrates the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord, also called Candlmas Day, on which candles are blessed symbolizing Christ who is the Light of the World. According to Luke’s account of the Gospel, Simeon recognized Jesus as the Messiah in the Temple and declared him “a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and glory for your people Israel” (Luke 2:32). This sparked the tradition of blessing enough candles to last an entire year. This led to candle processions in churches and in the streets, which became known as “Candlmas.” Please plan on joining us for Holy Mass, parishioners are invited to bring a candle which will be blessed at the mass. We will gather in the church as we usually do. Once we are in place, our candles will be lit. The priest then begins Mass with the blessing and sprinkling of candles, followed by the procession.

WELLNESS MINISTRY

HEALTHY NUGGETS

Do you read the food labels when buying your grocer-ies? If not this is the time to start. First reason to start doing so has been shown by research findings how High Fructose Corn Syrup leads to heart disease, liver problems, obesity, tooth decay, and feeds cancer cells.

It is important to know how much salt has been added or if the oils used are virgin, extra virgin, cold pressed or water pressed oil instead of unhealthy hydrogen oil. Know the nutrients the food has to make a healthy edu-cated choice. A good rule is if you cannot pronounce the ingredient listed or do not know what it is……don’t eat it!

Sometimes we feel so small in this wide world of ours. We wonder how we can make a difference. We know every little bit helps, but sometimes we feel so inadequate rising up against some of the global issues we face on a daily basis. Jesus tells us that the smallest of seeds turns into the largest of plants. Together, united with the world-wide Church, we can make a difference. If we get involved, put our words into action, then most certainly we can make a difference. It’s when we feel defeated and insignificant that the devil has much to work with. Let’s give him nothing and God everything.

If you give a parish a school, it’s going to ask for some children to educate.

When you give the parish the children, it’ll probably ask you for some teachers.

Once there are children and teachers, the parish will ask for a principal.

Then it will want to know about what the children are learning to make sure the school has a great

curriculum. When the parish looks at the learning there,

parishioners might notice a lot is happening that they might want to be a part of.

So they’ll probably talk to the priests about the school, and say hello to the principal.

When they’ve finished checking in with the priests and the principal, they’ll want to meet the children.

Parishioners will start volunteering at the school. They might get carried away and work the cash register

at lunch. They may even end up reading stories to little ones, talking to older ones about life choices, and feeling a bond with the school kids because the children are learning how to be responsible for growth in their

faith! When they’ve done this, they’ll start recognizing the

school families in church. The parishioners will be aware that students plan

liturgies every month, and participate in the Stations of the Cross during Lent, the May Crowning, and other

faith events. They’ll know the school families so well that they

might surprise those struggling somewhat with some anonymous grace during the year.

The parishioners will be happy that they have a great school community through their church.

When they look at their church, they’ll be excited about the young families calling it home.

Looking at the church will remind them that they want a vibrant parish.

So… the parishioners will ask for children to be a central part of their parish life.

And chances are if parishioners are looking for such a parish, they’re going to want a school to go with it.

Please join us for Catholic Schools Week Activities
