Dear Parishioners and Friends of Ascension,

Allow me to begin by first wishing all of our mothers and

grandmothers a very Happy Mother’s Day. Today in the United

States we celebrate Mother’s Day. In 1914 President Woodrow Wilson declared that Mother’s Day should be celebrated as a

national holiday on the second Sunday in May. Mothers have a

tremendously important job and role in our lives and in our

society. For that, we are grateful for all that our mothers do. On

a human level, we know that God, through the Holy Spirit, is ever

present and with us always. Particularly for those who are baptized and confirmed, we know that the Spirit is with us in a

special way. But on a human level, we want to know the love of

God in a more tangible way. We want to know Him in a physical

way. And so for that reason, God gave each one of us a human

mother. The love of a mother is the closest thing that we will ever

know to divine love.

How appropriate that Mother’s Day is celebrated in May, the

month dedicated to Mary. This Christian custom of dedicating

the month of May to Mary arose at the end of the 13th century.

At that time, the Church was able to Christianize the secular feasts which were wont to take place. In the 16th century, books

appeared and fostered this devotion. The practice became

especially popular among the members of the Jesuit Order. By

1700 it took hold among their students at the Roman College and

a bit later it was publicly practiced in the Gesu Church in Rome.

From there it spread to the whole Church. The pious practice of honoring Mary during the month of May has been especially

recommended by the Popes. Pope Paul VI wrote a short

encyclical in 1965 using the Month of Mary devotion as a means

of obtaining prayers for peace. At no point have those prayers for

peace seemed more urgent..

While the Second Vatican Council did not intend to suppress

popular devotions like the Rosary, the Council did direct that

devotions be reformed so that they should not appear to be

something apart from the liturgy. The rosary, particularly during

the month of May, continues to play a special role in the prayer

life of the Church. During the month of May, the rosary is

prayed here at Ascension each day at 6:30p.m. (in Spanish) to

which all are invited. During this month of May, let’s fervently

ask the intercession of Mary as we continue to pray for world

peace.

This weekend we also celebrate the 100th anniversary of the first

visit of Mary to Fatima. Mary appeared to three children, Lucia

de Santos, aged 10, and her two cousins, Francisco Marto, aged

9, and Jacinta Marto, aged 7, six different times between May

and October 1917. She described herself as "Our Lady of the

Rosary," while urging prayer, and particularly the rosary, as well

as penance for the conversion of sinners, and the consecration of

Russia to her Immaculate Heart. Perhaps that intention, is as

timely today as it was 100 years ago. Yesterday, May 13th, Pope

Francis canonized Blessed Jacinta Marto and Blessed Francisco

Marto, two of the shepherd children who saw Mary in Fatima on

May 13, 1017. We ask their intercessions.

Peace, Fr. Kearney

mes dedicado a María.

Paz, Padre Kearney
