Over my sixteen years of having been ordained a Deacon, I have preached many times about Jesus preaching through parables. Jesus wasn't just a preacher; he showed us the way to live. And many times he showed us through para-bles. Today's gospel about the sower and the seed is an exam-ple. It's a parable that we have heard many times, and it has great meaning, even for us today. This is one of the things that I marvel at with Jesus' parables; they are as relevant today as they were two thousand years ago. But today I want to talk about something that Jesus said in the Gospel story. The disciples asked a question of Jesus that many of us over time may have asked ourselves. "Why do you speak to them in parables?" Jesus answers, "This is why I speak to them in parables, because they look but do not see and hear but do not understand." Jesus then explains to them the parable of the sower and the seed. He ends with these words, "...but the seed sown on rich soil is the one who hears the word and understands it, who indeed bears fruit and yields a hundred or sixty or thirty fold.” I once read where a preacher said that hearing the word pro-claimed and a reflection is not our religion. It is what we do af-ter we hear it that is our religion. This simple thought sums up what Jesus is telling HIs disciples and us in today's Gospel. We can't just listen to the Lord with our ears; we have to listen with our hearts. When the Deacon proclaims at the end of Mass, "Go in the peace of Christ to glorify the Lord with our lives," it's the challenge to take the words you have just heard and to put them into action. We need to have the seeds of the Gospel bear fruit bear fruit like Jesus asks. Another area that I've preached about over my years as a Dea-con is prayer. Without a doubt we are in the midst of some tough times. The pandemic, social unrest and injustice, and economic hardship. But through all this we have Jesus' words that He is with us always and will never abandon us. These are the times where, like the story Footprints, Jesus isn't just walking alongside us. He is carrying us. So during these stressful and uncertain times we need to remem-ber two things. First, make sure that we don’t just hear the Word of the Lord, but that we take it to heart and put the words into action. Second, remember the power of prayer. It is just exactly during times like this that our prayers are needed. We need to convey to Jesus our wants and fears through our prayer. Please be safe and well. Pray for me as I pray for you. Peace of Christ, Deacon Russ

Smile with Your Family At Sea World, a boy absolutely refused to see the show featuring Shamu, the killer whale, but he wouldn’t tell his parents why. No amount of discussion or persuasion could get him to change his mind. Later, when they got home, they discovered the reason for his reluctance. An aunt had told him how exciting the show would be because “They choose children from the audience to feed Shamu!” ☺ A farmer and his pig were driving down the road when a cop pulled him over. The cop asked the farmer, "Didn't you know it is against the law to ride with a pig in the front of you truck?" The farmer replied, "No, I didn't know that." The cop asked the farmer where he was going and he said, "To Memphis". The cop said, "I will let you off the hook this time if you promise to take the pig to the zoo when you get to Memphis." So the farmer promised he would. Several days later the cop spotted the farmer with the pig driving down the road and he pulled him over again. The cop said "I thought I told you to take this pig to the zoo when you got to Memphis." The farmer replied, "I did and we had so much fun in the zoo; so I am taking him to Kings Island now". ☺ Why my marriage is successful: My wife and I always compromise. I admit I'm wrong and she agrees with me. ☺

Marriage Tune-Up

Not everything married couples say to each other is kind and gentle. Sometimes it's thorny or boring. Carve out 5 minutes (or more) for deep sharing today. Perhaps something like, "A fear, need, or joy I have is..."

Parenting Tune-Up When speaking to your kids (or anyone) consider these proverbs: "It is better to leave angry words unspoken than to mend the heart those words have broken." and "The tongue is the only instru-ment that gets sharper with use."

Sunday Reflections

God’s Vegetable Garden: This is the story of the fussy vegetari-an. A young woman was committed to being a vegetarian, but she was never satisfied with any of the fruit or

vegetables she bought. For her, all melons were too ripe, or not ripe enough, all tomatoes were bruised or unripe, and heads of cauliflower and broccoli were too big or too little. Then one day, driving down Tarpon Avenue, she drove past a new store with a long line of people waiting to get in. She looked, and the sign said, God’s Fruit and Vegetable Stand. “Finally,” she said, “I can get some de-cent vegetables and fruit.” So she stood in line and wait-ed. Hours went by before she walked through that door. She was enveloped in light, but she didn’t see any apples or oranges or tomatoes or cabbage, or anything to buy. She walked to the light, and there was a counter there. And behind the counter, there stood God. She could tell it was God because of the light, and because he had an apron on with a big G on it. Anyway, she placed her order, “I would like some perfect broccoli, and some perfect carrots, some perfect tomatoes and a per-fect melon. Also, if you have perfect Brussels sprouts that would really be a miracle.” “Sorry,” God said, “I only sell seeds here.” She went away disappointed!

Actually, God doesn’t sell seeds, He gives seeds to us. The seeds are his Word in its many expressions. But we have to do something with this precious gift. It simply is not enough just to hear the Word of God. We have to let it grow within us and influence our lives, enabling us to live like the Peo-ple of the Word.

Share Your Best Corn Seed!

Each year he entered his corn in the state fair where it won a blue ribbon. One year a newspaper re-porter interviewed him and learned something interesting about how he grew it. The reporter discovered that the farmer shared his seed corn with his neigh-bors. "How can you afford to share your best seed corn with your neighbors when they are entering corn in com-petition with yours each year?” the reporter asked. “Why sir,” said the farmer, “didn’t you know? The wind picks up pollen from the ripening corn and swirls it from field to field. If my neighbors grow inferior corn, cross-pollination will steadily degrade the quality of my corn. If I am to grow good corn, I must help my neighbors grow good corn.”

Going to Church for a Show/Social Need?

We all know that sometimes the message of Christ does not get through because of the person entrusted with conveying it. The most famous example of that, of course, was Mahatma Gandhi. In his autobiography Gandhi tells that during his early days in South Africa he inquired into Christianity. He attended a certain church in Pretoria for several Sundays, but, he writes, “The congregation did not strike [him] as being partic-ularly religious; they were not an assembly of devout souls, but appeared rather to be worldly-minded peo-ple going to church for recreation and in conformity to custom.” He therefore concluded that there was nothing in Chris-tianity which he did not already possess. Gandhi was driven away from Christianity by the fact that the performance of Christians he met fell far short of their profession of faith. (G. T. Bellhouse, The Hand of Glory, pp. 7, 8).

Sunday Reflections Seeds Sown and Parenting – Act I, II & III

The parable of the sower. Matthew 13: 1-23

Most nights after dinner, her 3 and 4-year-old daughters call, "Mom! We need you! Come dance with us!" After a few minutes of pleading, she joins them. The dancing is more jumping around and includes loud off-key singing and crazy hair-swinging. "What we lack in rhythm we more than

make up for in laughter," she says, "and I love to see my little girls this way: joyful, silly, and happy to have me around.”

But she knows this won't last forever. This is Act 1 in the par-ent-child relationship. Act 2 will begin in the blink of an eye: the day "when they will die of embarrassment to see me dancing and certainly will not in any way encourage me to do so." She remembers dancing with her mom, too, when she was a little girl. And singing in the car and snug-gling up to her mom in bed when she read Little Woman and Little House on the Prairie. Act 1. Then came Act 2: shutting herself up in her room to listen to "her" music, reading on her own, preferring the company of her friends to time with her mom. She's already prepared her-self for Act 2 with her two daughters.

But she's also discovered that there's a third act in the mother-daughter relationship. She remembers: "When I was in my early 20s and living in New York City, I went home for a long weekend to visit my parents in Maine. The dinner dishes were cleared, my dad had gone to bed, and it was just my mom and me sitting on the couch together, in our pajamas, chatting about what was new with her and me and her friends and my friends. I remem-ber snuggling into her and her stroking my hair, just like she used to do when I was a child, as we talked and talked.

"During Act 3, we went to movies again, went shopping, even went on road trips together - just the two of us - to various destinations. We talked most days, laughed often, cried some, too. By that point I was my own person, but as luck would have it, I had grown into someone who loved having her around, just as I had when I was little. "And so, while I try to savor every hug, kiss, laugh, and sigh from my daughters, knowing that they'll never be this little again and they'll never again need me with the same intensity, I also try to keep in mind that with some luck, we'll have an Act 3 where we can all dance together once more."

These "three acts" of parenthood are "seeds sown" by moms and dads in the course of their children's life: the seeds of patience, of understanding, of forgiveness, of compassion. The parable of the sower speaks especially to parents: that Mom and Dad's own example of selfless-ness and humility, of compassion and generosity, are "seeds" that are planted in the minds and hearts of their daughters and sons that will mature one day into their own harvest of generosity and forgiveness - and the "seeds" of that same harvest they will then "sow" in the lives of their own children.

“Some Seeds Fell Among Thorns”

It was early evening on November 9, 1965, when a power station at Niagara Falls became overloaded with power demands. It was set to measure power output, and to transfer power to a backup system if the output rose too high. This system had been put in place two years earlier, but no one had thought to re-adjust the measurements to reflect the changes in power demands in those two years. At the first sign of a power overload, the station shut down and began transferring power to the backup generators. These, too, became overloaded and shut down, resulting in a massive blackout across most of the northeastern United States and Canada. Airports, utilities, corporations, schools, hospitals, public transportation systems, and homes were without power for thirteen hours. Millions of people were affected. And all because someone had not thought to re-adjust the numbers on the main generator. [James Burke, Connections (Boston: Little, Brown, 1978)]

This can be compared to the seeds that sprouted and began to grow but later on suppressed by thistles. I see people every day who are overloaded, and choked. We want to do everything so well. We want to provide for our families, excel in our work, make sure our children are able to participate in all kinds of extracurric-ular activities and look after aging parents. The list suddenly be-comes overwhelming, and religion, well it will just have to take its place in line. Jesus described us well when he said that "other seed fell among thorns, which grew up and choked the plants."

“Some Seeds Fell on Good Soil”

These seeds are people who are receptive to the Good News of Christ. They understand that faith is not meant to be an add-on. It is not a burden you carry in addition to other burdens. When we open ourselves to Christ and say to him, "All I am, all I have, all I hope to be, I give to you," we discover a sudden lifting of all our burdens. Then we restructure our priorities according to our faith commitment.

Dr. Tom Kim did that. Dr. Kim is the Korean-born grandson of a Presbyterian minister. Arriving in the United States, his family settled in Knoxville, TN. He chose a small Christian college to attend. When he prepared to attend Korean medical schools, despite being accepted at Indiana University, his mother was opposed. When he finished Korean medical school he returned to Knoxville and has been practicing since 1979. The unique thing about Dr. Kim's office is that he does not charge the uninsured or the work-ing poor. "My father became a physician because he didn't want to be so poor as his father, the minister. But he still had the faith, and I do, too. I finally realized that I didn't have to go so far to find people in need that I could minister to." Dr. Kim estimates that he has seen1,000 poor patients. When he began this policy five years ago, he set aside two extra hours a night for treating nonpaying patients after each of four days of regular office hours. Now, all his patients, both insured and uninsured, are seen throughout the work day. For patients he can’t treat, Dr. Kim makes referrals. Dr. Kim says that most of his free patients could get nowhere if they made the referral calls, but he can! "I explain this patient is without insurance and ask if they can't treat them and work out something on payment." Kim says donating his time is a way of repaying his debt to the U.S. where he "prospered so much." “I got a talent--curing sick people--and I want to use it to do a little of what Jesus did. don't want to be a Sunday-only Christian." (Knoxville, TN News-Sentinel 7-11-98, p. A4, "Doctor Ministers to Poor.")

Announcement re: Confessions

We have begun the slow and cau-tious process of returning to Church for Mass, with limited numbers of peo-ple and limited number of Masses.

We are doing the same with the re-ception of other Sacraments as well as conducting funerals.

In the same spirit of balancing caution and spiritual need, we wish to an-nounce that Confessions will be avail-able from 3:30PM—4:30PM on Satur-days, beginning July 11, prior to the 5:00PM Mass in the 'Cry Room.

Those who feel that it is very important to have the Sacrament of Reconcilia-tion, and do not wish to postpone it to a time of return to normalcy, are wel-come - keeping all the precautions, especially social distancing.

Sowing Seeds by Our Lives!

A young African woman came to the U.S. from Angola. Her name was Maria and she was always laughing. One day she went to a meeting in her church on evangelizing and converting others; they were talking about pamphlets, missions, campaigns, and all the rest to bring people to Christianity. At one point someone turned to Maria and said, “What do they do in your church in Angola, Maria?” “In my church,” said Ma-ria, after a moment’s thought, “we don’t give pamphlets to people or have missions. We just send one or two Christian families to live in a vil-lage. And when people see what Christians are like, then they want to be Christians themselves.”

Our witnessing matters. So the questions we need to ask ourselves are: Am I merely hearing God's word without understanding it? Does God's word meet with a hard heart in me? Am I too anxious about money, security, provision for retirement or old age? Is God's word taking root in me? Converting me? Transforming me? Enabling me to sacrifice? And what about the "fruits" that we are being invited to pro-duce: justice and mercy, hospitality for the immigrant and those with AIDS, the dispossessed, the unborn, the single mother? By refusing to consider these, we may be missing the healing that the Word of God can bring into our lives.

Listening without Hearing

During World War II, the city of Palermo, Sicily, a military objective of the Allied Powers, was to be bombed by the American Air Force. To warn the Sicilians, telling them to flee, thousands of pam-phlets were dropped on the city beforehand, but the citizens simply did not believe the warn-ing. They listened, but they did not hear! When the American planes came and dropped their bombs, hundreds of Sicilians were killed; in fact, in some cold, dead hands were found the very pages urging them to leave the city.

Listening without hearing is also what Jesus refers to in the Parable of the: the soil along the path. This soil is too hard to absorb the seed. Soon the birds eat it up or passers-by trample it under foot. Jesus explains that this soil is like the person who hears the word of God without letting it sink in. They just ignore the seed/word and replace it with other matters that attract them. This type of soil represents people whose hearts and/or minds are closed because of laziness, prejudice, fear, pride or immoral liv-ing.

Not Ready to Come Back to Church?

Not ready to come back to church? St. Matthias understands. Here are some op-tions for participating in mass online and then receiving Holy Eucharist at church, but not in the church building.

Option 1: Stream mass on your device while parked in the St. Matthias parking lot; after the final blessing, walk to the church's front entrance and a Eucharistic minister will dis-tribute communion. If you are physically un-able to leave your car, make sure to park in the lot on the side of the church and a Eu-charistic minister will come to your car to distribute Eucharist.

Option 2: Watch mass from your home at either 5:00 PM on Saturday or 10:00 AM Sun-day morning; then drive to the church on Sunday at about 10:30 AM or 12:30 PM. The same instructions apply as in Option 1 — walk to the church's front entrance to re-ceive Eucharist or wait in your car in the side parking lot.

Welcome back to St. Matthias! We look forward to seeing you!

We Continue to Live-Stream

Our Masses 5 pm Saturdays (or after-wards on demand) 8 am Tuesdays 8 am Thursdays

If you are unable to physically join us for Mass in the church, please know that we will contin-ue to livestream our Masses on our YouTube Channel: www.youtube.com/c/StMatthiasSomersetNJ

Poet’s Corner:

Spiritual Direc-tion Prayers/

Poems by Pat Leposa

Today Today is different From yesterday. Today is a day Of new beginnings. Nestled in the valley Framed by Snowcapped mountains Lies Bozeman The thriving city Awaits this weary traveler. In a Different time zone, With a different climate (no humidity) A small cozy room In a large warm house My new domain I am welcomed, Embrace my Loving family. Safe and secure. Thank You, Lord for New beginnings. Questions/ Reflections 1-what is different in your life as a result of the pandemic? What new beginnings will you embrace? 2- God is only a prayer away.

Celebrating Our Faith: Liturgy Addressing Safety Concerns

If you are coming back to weekend Mass inside the church (or cafete-ria for overflow), you will notice that St. Matthias has numerous precau-tions in place for your safety. The Pastoral Council Task Force for the Restoration of Mass along with Frs. Abraham and Joe, has gone to great lengths to ensure that the safest and most reverent environment is main-tained as we begin to gradually gather together again. Many of the safety measures are summarized below. We hope that by putting these measures into place, your expe-rience of coming back to Mass is not only a sacred experience but a safe one as well. We welcome your feedback through matthiasmatters.net.

In accordance with state and local guidance, the following safety measures are in place: Masks are required

Hand sanitizer is available

The presider and Eucharistic Ministers use it at various points during the Mass and before distributing communion.

Maintain 6ft social distancing between households

Parishioners are escorted to appropriate seating and must stay in the designated space

Lines are on the floor to facilitate distance for the communion line.

Pews are emptied carefully for distancing purposes and to avoid person-to-person con-tact.

All persons participating in the mass and helping with seating or cleaning are being screened for symptoms prior to mass.

Doors are open both for ventilation and to minimize commonly touched surfaces.

Please enter through the main entrance to the church when cones for cleaning detail have been removed.

Please enter through the far entrance to the cafeteria when the cones for cleaning have been removed.

To maximize the ventilation in the church, doors will be open, air conditioning will be run-ning as well as the ceiling fans.

To maximize ventilation in the cafeteria, doors will be open, windows will be open and air conditioning will be running.

There are detailed plans for seating, the communion lines after the final blessing, the way to receive communion, as well as exiting the venues.

Church and cafeteria seating will adhere to the Governor’s most current executive order regarding the number of people allowed in a venue. We will always consider the safest way to administer these guidelines in our seating arrangements.

Both the church and the cafeteria surfaces will be disinfected after each mass or event in the facility.

The cry room is unavailable for seating.

Lavatory is available for emergencies and will be cleaned after masses.

There is a plan in place to isolate someone who becomes sick during the mass.

If someone becomes sick in the church, the lavatory in the cry room will be unavailable.

The mass will be live streamed and available for those at home and in the parking lot from 5 pm on Saturday evening.

Those viewing from the parking lot should park in the side lot.

After the final blessing, communion will be distributed at the main entrance to the church for those viewing in the parking lot.

Those in vulnerable groups should stay home.

If you are not feeling well or if someone in your household is sick, please stay at home and take care of yourself so that you can join us when you are well.

Being Good Stewards Stewardship Reflection Jul 12, 2020 Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

“The seed sown among thorns is the one who hears the word but then the cares of the world and the lure of riches choke the word and it bears no fruit.” (Matthew 13:22) Does the lure of riches and material goods choke God out of your life? Are you so caught up in earthly activities that you have no time for God? Gratitude and generosity are virtues that we should strive to do on a daily basis. Every decision we make either takes us one step closer to God or one step further away. What we receive at Mass every Sunday should be shared with others all the other days of the week as well.

Discovering God: Formation Summer Gospel Sharing with Fr. Abraham via ZOOM

When facing crisis, people in general turn to God for help. This pandemic time is no exception. But for us Chris-tians, we have a standing invitation from our loving God: “Come to me all you who labor and are overburdened, I will give you rest.” (Mt 11:25-30)) Coming to Jesus means to listen to His words and enter into communion with

Him. During this summer, I wish to offer a Gospel sharing session via zoom. So, this month of July, we will have two options: On Wednesday July 22nd at 10 am and at 7 pm. (The morning session is repeated in the evening.) Each session will last for an hour. Up to 100 people can join for each session.

We will focus on the Gospel of the following Sunday. The format will be: - Introduction and reflection on the gospel (Mt.13:44-52) in large group. - Break out session for sharing in small groups - Conclusion with sharing of questions and feedback in large group

Everyone is welcome to join either the 10 am or the 7 pm session.
