System cabling SIMATIC TOPconnect for SIMATIC S7and SITOP connection forSIMATIC S5SIMATIC TOP connect andSITOP connection provide theideal system cabling. The indi-vidual components are inter-connected in the switchgearcabinet quickly, reliably and forease of servicing.

In contrast to conventionalindividual wiring, the systemcabling uses preassembledcables. It only remains for themto be plugged in.This does away with the time-consuming connection of up to50 single cores per interface.

You save time because it is somuch quicker to plug in stan-dardized connection elementsthan to connect numerousindividual wires. You prevent mistakes becauseit is impossible to interchangeindividual cores. You have a clear overview be-cause the cable lines are easilytraced and everything looks tidy. You receive everything from asingle source in the expectedSiemens quality; with a singleorder which simplifies yourlogistics, and this around theworld. On the bottom line, you savemoney: Your SIMATIC is up andrunning sooner and it returnsyour investment earlier. Yoursystem technicians have moretime for other tasks.

Reliable, error-free connectionsbetween the individual compo-nents of an electrical system area basic prerequisite for correctoperation.Conventional wiring techniquesusing terminal blocks are oftentime-consuming and prone toerror. The larger the system, themore confused the wiring be-comes. This results in consider-able costs in the commissioningphase and later on when ser-vicing.Well thoughtout solutions arenecessary to simplify handling, increase clarity and reduce costs. The ability to implement thesystem worldwide is also animportant consideration.

Siemens offers solutions forconnecting your componentsthat meet your requirements.• System cabling

Three cabling variants areoffered to meet the mostvaried control cabinet con-cepts:

Modular connection(only for SIMATIC S5)The front connector and con-necting cable are combined toform a single unit. The connection therefore onlycomprises:• A front connector element• A termination blockThe front connector element com-prises a modified connector withan attached cable. As in the caseof fully modular connection, thereis no need to connect single wires. The installation overhead for theswitchgear cabinet is thereforealso extremely low in this caseand the polarity cannot be re-versed by mistake. One interfaceless is required as compared withthe fully modular connection. Thetransfer modules are identicalto those of the 32-channel versionfor fully modular connection.

Fully modular connectionwith which each component isplugged in individually. The system comprises:• A front connector module• A connecting cable• A termination blockThe wiring overhead is extremelylow and polarity reversal protec-tion ensures that mistakes areprevented. The fully modular con-figuration means that inventoriesare kept to a minimum even ifyou use various different SIMATICsystems.

Flexible connectionconsisting of:• Front connector with attached

single coresThe core cross-section is alsosuitable for high currents. The single cores can be directlyrouted to each element inthe control cabinet, quickly andflexibly. The cores are consecutivelynumbered on their insulation. These numbers match the num-bers on the front connector.Even if the cores have to beshortened or routed indirectly, wiring remains simple. You main-tain a clear overview and eventhough single wires are con-nected up, it will always look tidy.

General

The wiring of SIMATIC S7 and SIMATIC C7 I/O modules to the sensors and actuators is a significant factor with regard to time and costs, control cabinet construction and ease of servicing.Setting up such connections is easy, fast and reliable with SIMATIC TOP connect system cabling. In contrast to conventional individual wiring, the system cabling uses preassembled cables. It only remains for them to be plugged in.This does away with the time-consuming connection of up to 50 single cores per inter-face.

32-channel and 16-channel front connector modules, connecting cable and terminal block

Application

Fully modular connection is the standard method for SIMATIC S7-300. Fully modu-lar connection supports easy, fast and error-free connection of sensors and actuators to SIMATIC S7-300. The distance between the digital/analog signal modules and the connected sensors/actua-tors can be anything up to 30 m, depending on the parti-cular requirements. The sen-sors and actuators are connected to the terminal block on site.Up to 2 or 4 twisted ribbon cables can be connected to the front connector modules for digital modules with 16 or 32 channels, each with 1 ter-minal block for 8 signal paths. Up to 2 twisted ribbon cables can be connected to the front connector modules for analog modules, each with 1 terminal block. Power can be applied either to the terminal block or to the front connector module. The fully modular connection of SIMATIC TOP connect allows the wiring of the follo-wing digital and analog modules:

Features

Easy connection of front connector modules, con-necting cable and terminal blockQuick and low-cost wiringSupply voltage for thedigital and analog modules can be applied to the front connector module or the terminal blockProjection of the front con-nector modules for safety isolation (only for 20-pin front connector modules)Reduction in wiring errors, clearly arranged cabinet wiringGrouping of signals into bytes in the case of digital modulesEach component can be replaced individuallyEach cable length can be configured without cutting

Design

Front connector moduleFor connection to the signal module (digital and analog). The front connector moduleis connected to the signal module in place of theSIMATIC S7-300 front connec-tor. It has two-pin and four-pin connectors for plugging in the cables and two or four con-nections for the power input. Variants are available for24 V/0.5 A digital I/O modules with 16 and 32 channels, for 24 V/2 A digital output mod-ules and for analog I/O mod-ules.

Further informationon front connector modules can be found on page 2/8.

Terminal blockFor digital and analog I/O signals. A relay terminal block is available for digital output modules for potential isolation and adaptation. With screw terminals or spring-loaded ter-minals for sensors and actua-tors. In the case of the digital relay terminal blocks, the con-nection of up to eight chan-nels and power input is possible. The terminal blocks are snapped onto a DIN rail.

Connecting cable16-core twisted ribbon cable (with or without a shield) or2 x 16-core twisted ribbon cable (without shield) with 1 or 2 insulation displacement con-nectors (flat sockets) at each end. The preassembled round cable links the front connector module with the terminal block. It is prepared by the user by means of a crimping tool (to be ordered separa-tely). The cable transmits 8 or 2 x 8 channels over distances of up to 30 m.The twisted ribbon cables offer the following advantages:

The twisted ribbon cable is available as one 16-core ribbon cable or two 16-core ribbon cables. The signals can be applied byte-by-byte or word-by-word.

The twisted ribbon cable can be stripped at any point (it is not bonded), so that the internal ribbon cable is in the correct state for the remaining operati-ons after stripping.

The outer sheath of the twi-sted ribbon cable enhan-ces its mechanical protection compared to unsheathed ribbon cable, whilst retaining flexibility (ease of laying).

The twisted ribbon cable can be worked by machine (stripping and fitting of the insulation displacementterminals by machine is possible).

The 16-core twisted ribbon cable is also available in a shielded version.

Information on mountingtwisted ribbon cables canbe found on page 2/8.

Shield plateThe shield plate is mounted optionally on the terminal block for 3-wire sensors or on the terminal block for analog signals and snapped onto the DIN rail with the terminal block. Thus an optimum shield connection with the terminal elements is achieved between the shielded twisted ribbon cable or between shielded field cables and the grounded DIN rail.

Front connector modules and 2 x 16-core twisted ribbon cablewith connector on front connector module

Notes on front connector modules

The following conditions should be observed when connecting the front connec-tor modules:

With a total current of less than 4 A per byteThe supply point of the posi-tive potential of an external supply voltage can be con-nected to the terminal block. This will run the supply voltage over the twisted rib-bon cable.Due to the limited current car-rying capacity of the twisted ribbon cable, the total current may not exceed 4 A/byte under any circumstances.

With a total current of more than 4 A per byteTotal current of more than 4 A can be fed from an external power supply to the module using additional connecting cables. The connecting cables are plugged into spe-cial connection sockets on the front connector.

For use with SIMATIC S7-300 modulesThe front connector modules replace the SIMATIC standard connectors6ES7 392-1AJ00-0AA0,6ES7 392-1BJ00-0AA0,6ES7 392-1AM00-0AA0 and 6ES7 392-1BM01-0AA0

Terminal diagrams of the front connector modules These diagrams (module above, IDC connector below) can be found in the upper part of pages 5/15 to 5/17.

Preparing a twisted ribbon cable for connection

The twisted ribbon cable is first cut by the user to the required length.

For the 1 x 16-core twisted ribbon cableFor the 2 x 8 I/O front connec-tor module, the cable sheath must be stripped by about 110 mm for connection to the upper socket of the front con-nector module, and by about 70 mm for connection to the lower socket. For the 4 x 8 I/O front connec-tor module, the cable sheath must be stripped by about 115 mm for connection to the upper socket of the front con-nector module, and by about 75 mm for connection to the lower socket. For connection to the terminal block, the cable sheath must be stripped by about 40 mm.

For the 2 x 16-core twisted ribbon cableFor the 2 x 8 I/O front connec-tor module, the cable sheath must be stripped by about95 mm. The outer twisted rib-bon cable must be stripped by about 95 mm for connec-tion to the upper socket of the front connector module, and the inner twisted ribbon cable must be stripped by about 40 mm for connection to the lower socket. For the 4 x 8 I/O front connec-tor module, the cable sheath must be stripped by about 115 mm.

for SIMATIC S7-300Fully modular connection; notes on frontconnector modules and twisted ribbon cables

The outer twisted ribbon cable must be stripped by about 115 mm for connection to the upper socket of the front connector module, and the inner twisted ribbon cable must be stripped by about75 mm for connection to the lower socket. For connection to the terminal block, the cable sheath must be stripped by about 100 mm.

Connecting the twisted ribbon cable to the 16-pin connector

The ribbon cable is then inserted in the 16-pin connec-tor. There is a guide key on the connector. On the side of the key, pin 1 is marked with a triangle. The ribbon cable must be inserted in such a way that the marked core of the

ribbon cable ends over the tri-angle identifier of the connec-tor. The connector is of the insulation displacement type and can be pressed on easily. The strain relief device is then fitted to the connector at the terminal block side of the twi-sted ribbon cable. After it has been pressed on, the twisted ribbon cable is then folded back over the connector. The strain relief device provided can then be pushed over the twisted ribbon cable until it engages on the connector. When the 2 x 16-core twisted ribbon cable is connected to the 2 x 8 I/O front connector module, the cable sheath sits inside the front connector module. The twisted ribbon cable is fixed to the front con-nector module by means of a cable tie (see front connector modules in the figure at the upper right).

Notes on terminal blocks

The terminal blocks form the interface between the con-necting cables of the sensors/actuators coming from the field and the SIMATIC S7. This allows the simple and reliable connection of all SIMATIC S5 and S7 programmable con-trollers.

Connection to front connec-tor modulesOne 16-core or one 2 x 16-core twisted ribbon cable is used per single or double ter-minal block respectively for connection to the front con-nector modules.Depending on the front con-nector module, up to four ter-minal blocks are connected via the twisted ribbon cables.Up to eight signal channels are routed via the terminal blocks.

Terminal block typesThere is a choice of five diffe-rent types of terminal block, available either with spring-loaded terminals or screw ter-minals.

SpacingThe SIMATIC S7 and the termi-nal blocks can be up to 30 m apart. The distance depends on the requirements in each case and is at the discretion of the configuring engineer.

Labeling fieldsThere are labeling fields on the terminal blocks. They are useful for customer-specific assignments and facilitate the tracing of connections.

Terminal block for 3-wire sensors (TP3)The terminal block for 3-wire sensors offers the user eight signal connections, ten ground connections and ten positive potential connec-tions. This provides sufficient reserve for potential jumpers and supply points.

Terminal block for 1-wire connection (TP1)If the ground potential of the individual sensors/actuators is not routed singly to the termi-nal block, the compact termi-nal block for 1-wire connection with eight signal connections

is used. The potential supply must be taken into account by the user and can be imple-mented via busbars in the control cabinet, for example

Terminal block with relays (TPR)If isolation or adaptation of the potential is necessary be-tween the output module and the field signals, the terminal block fitted with relays is used. The user has 8 signal connec-tions for 2-wire connection for the field signals on the termi-nal block with relays. As for the terminal block with 3-wire connection, the module can be supplied with the potential from the terminal block or front connector module.

Terminal block for2 A modules (TP2)The 2 A modules of SIMATIC S7 can be connected to the terminal block speciallydesigned for them.

Terminal block for analog signals (TPA)For the analog modules of SIMATIC S7, a special termi-nal block is available for ana-log signals. With this terminal block, the signals can be con-nected easily and comfortably. The shields of the signal leads can be connected via an optional shield plate to the associated shield connection terminals.

Please take special note of the following:All cores of the twisted ribbon cable are needed to transmit the signals of the 2 A modules. For this reason, the power supply to the module must be wired separately.Terminal diagrams of the ter-minal blocks can be found under "Configuring" from page 6/3 onwards, on the lower half of each page.See page 2/8 for connectinga twisted ribbon cable to a16-pin connector.

Note for terminal blocks with 8 NO relaysIn order to protect the relay contacts inductive loads must be dampened externally with an effective suppressor cir-cuit. No measures have been taken to this effect in the TPR.The plug connectors may only be worked on when no voltage is present. If SELV voltage and 230 V voltages or voltages consisting of different phases are to be used on a mixed basis at the out-puts, these must be divided up between both contact groups or one output within the group must remain unused .A relay contact occupies 2 adjacent terminals.Evaluation of the creepage distances and clearances accor-ding to branch and application specific regulations is left to the user. The required information can be found under the technical specifications relating to the creepage distances and clearances.

Wiring of analog modules for SIMATIC S7-300 with SIMATIC TOP connect

A terminal block is available for wiring SIMATIC S7-300 modules with SIMATIC TOP connect. The following notes on connection must beobserved during wiring.

Load power supplyOn the front connector mod-ule, there are separate termi-nals for the load voltage L+ and M. This allows the load power supply for the analog module to be connected either to the front connector module or via the terminal block.

The front connector module and terminal block can be located at a distance of upto 30 m apart.

Terminal assignmentOn the terminal block TPA, the individual terminals are labeled alphabetically. This makes it easier for you to assign the individual termi-nals on the analog module to the terminals of the terminal block.

The assignments between the terminals on the analog module and the terminals on the terminal block are shown In the diagram above right.

Assignment of front connec-tor module to terminal blockThe top socket on the front connector module is the con-nector for terminal block 1 and the bottom socket on the front connector module is the connector for terminal block 2 .

Shield connectionThe shield of the shielded signal lead can be

Connected to the analog module via a shield termina-tion element to ground andAt the terminal block via the shield plate to ground.

The shield of the signal leads or the twisted ribbon cable can be directly terminated on the terminal block. For this purpose, a shield plate must be connected to the terminal block before installation. In the diagram bottom right, you can see that the shield plate lies against the rear of the terminal block which makes the con-nection to the grounded DIN rail. The shield of the signal leads or the ribbon cable must be connected to the shield plate via shield connection ter-minals.

Front connector with single cores: 32 channels and 16 channels

Application

The flexible connection en-sures a rapid and direct con-nection between the input/output modules of theSIMATIC S7-300 and the indi-vidual elements in the control cabinet. The core cross-sections of 0.5mm² allow higher current flows, too.

Features

Single cores can be directly routed to each ele-ment in the control cabinet.

The greater cross-sections allow higher current flows with a lower voltage drop.

Reduction in wiring over-head thanks to the simple plug-in connection be-tween preassembled cable and I/O module.

Simple wiring; the numbers printed on the cores corre-spond to the connection point on the I/O connector.

Clearly arranged control cabinet wiring thanks to bunched single cores.

Design

Front connector with attached single cores. The cores have a cross-section of 0.5 mm² and their numbers are printed on as identifiers. The single cores are bunched with cable ties.Standard lengths are 2.5 m, 3.2 m and 5.0 m. Special lengths are available on request.

32-channel front connector module, connecting cable and terminal block

Application

Fully modular connection is the standard method for SIMATIC S7-400. Fully modu-lar connection supports easy, fast and error-free connection of sensors and actuators to SIMATIC S7-400. The distance between the digital/analog signal modules and the connected sensors/actua-tors can be anything up to30 m, depending on the parti-cular requirements. The sen-sors and actuators are connected to the terminal block on site. One or two 16-core twisted ribbon cables or one2 x 16-core twisted ribbon cable can be connected to the front connector modules for digital modules (2 A out-put) with 16 channels. Up to four 16-core twisted ribbon cables or two 2 x 16-core twi-sted ribbon cables can be connected to the front con-nector modules for digital modules with 32 channels, with one terminal block for8 signal paths in both cases. Up to four shielded 16-core twisted ribbon cables can be connected to the front con-nector modules for analog modules, each with one ana-log terminal block.Power can be applied either to the terminal block or to the front connector module.

The fully modular connection of SIMATIC TOP connect allows the wiring of the fol-lowing digital and analog modules:SM 421

Features

Easy connection of front connector module, connec-ting cable and terminal block.Quick and low-cost wiring.Supply voltage for digital and analog modules can be applied to the front con-nector module or the termi-nal block.Reduction in wiring errors, clearly arranged cabinet wiring.Grouping of signals into bytes in the case of digital modules. Each component can be replaced individually. Each cable length can be configured without cutting.

Design

Front connector moduleFor connection to the signal module. It has two-pin and four-pin connectors for plug-ging in the cables and con-nections for the power input.

For further information on the connecting cable, see page 2/24.

Terminal blockFor digital and analog I/O signals. A relay terminal block is available for digital output modules for potential isolation and adaptation. With screw terminals or spring-loaded ter-minals for sensors and actua-tors. In the case of the digital and relay terminal blocks, the connection of up to eight channels and power input is possible. The terminal blocks are snap-ped onto a DIN rail. For further information onthe terminal blocks, see page 2/25.This information also applies to the fully modular connection of SIMATIC S7-400.

Connecting cable16-core twisted ribbon cable (with or without a shield) or2 x 16-core twisted ribbon cable (without shield) with 1 or 2 insulation displacement con-nectors (flat sockets) at each end.

The preassembled cable links the front connector module with the terminal block. It is prepared by the user by means of a crimping tool(to be ordered separately). The cable transmits 8 or2 x 8 channels over distances of 30 m max.

For further information on the connecting cable, see page 2/4.The twisted ribbon cables have the following advantages:

The twisted ribbon cable is available as one 16-core cable or two 16-core cables. The signals can be applied byte-by-byte or word-by-word.

The twisted ribbon cable can be stripped at any point (it is not bonded),so that the internal ribbon cable is in the correct state for the remaining oper-ati-ons after stripping.

The outer sheath of the twi-sted ribbon cable enhan-ces its mechanical protection compared to unsheathed ribbon cable, whilst retaining flexibility (ease of laying).

The twisted ribbon cable can be worked by machine (stripping and fitting of the insulation displacement terminals by machine is possible).

The single 16-core twisted ribbon cable is also availa-ble as a shielded type.

Information on mounting twi-sted ribbon cables can be found on page 2/24.

Notes on front connector modules

The following conditions should be observed when connecting the front connec-tor modules:

With a total current of less than 4 A per byteThe supply point of the posi-tive potential of an external supply voltage can be con-nected to the terminal block. This will run the supply voltage over the twisted rib-bon cable.

On account of the limited cur-rent carrying capacity of the twisted ribbon cable, the total current must may not exceed 4 A/byte under any circum-stances.

With a total current of more than 4 A per byteTotal current of more than 4 A can be fed from an external power supply to the module using additional connecting cables. The connecting cables are plugged into spe-cial connection sockets on the front connector module.

For use with SIMATIC S7-400 modulesThe front connector modules replace the SIMATIC standard connectors6ES7 492-1AL00-0AA0, 6ES7 492-1BL00-0AA0 and 6ES7 492-1CL00-0AA0

Terminal diagrams of the front connector modules These diagrams (module above, IDC connector below) can be found in the upper part of pages 5/18 and 5/19.

Preparing a twisted ribbon cable for connection:

The twisted ribbon cable is first cut by the user to the required length.

For the 1 x 16-core twisted ribbon cableThe cable sheath must be stripped by about 315 mm for connection to the upper sock-et of the front connector module, by about 270 mm for connection to the second sok-ket from the top, by about 160 mm for connection to the

second socket from the bot-tom and by about 140 mm for connection to the lower sock-et.For connection to the terminal block, the cable sheath must be stripped by about 40 mm.

For the 2 x 16-core twisted ribbon cableThe cable sheath must be stripped by about 270 mm for connection to the two upper sockets of the front connector module; then the outer twi-sted ribbon cable must be shortened to about 265 mm and the inner twisted ribbon cable must be shortened to about 230 mm. The cable sheath must be stripped by about 120 mm for connection to the two lower sockets of the front connector module and then the outer twisted ribbon cable must be shortened to about 115 mm and the inner twisted ribbon cable must be shortened to about 85 mm.For connection to the terminal block, the cable sheath must be stripped by about 100 mm.

Connecting the twisted ribbon cable to the 16-pin connector

The twisted ribbon cable is then inserted in the 16-pin connector. There is a guide key on the connector. On the side of the key, pin 1 is mar-ked with atriangle. The twisted ribbon cable must be inserted in such a way that the marked core of the twisted ribbon cable ends over the tri-angle identifier of the connec-tor. Remember to note the location of the marked identification core for the front connector module (see diagram top right) and for the termination block (see diagram bottom right). The connector is of the insulation-displacement type and can be pressed in easily. The strain relief device is then fitted. The twisted ribbon cable is folded over the con-nector for this purpose. The strain relief device pro-vided can then be pushed over the twisted ribbon cable and can engage with the con-nector.

Notes on terminal blocks

The terminal blocks form the interface between the con-necting cables of the sensors/actuators coming from the field and the SIMATIC S7. This allows the simple and reliable connection of all SIMATIC S5 and S7 programmable con-trollers.

Connection to front connec-tor modulesOne 16-core or one 2 x 16-core twisted ribbon cable is used per single or double ter-minal block respectively for connection to the front con-nector modules.

Depending on the front con-nector module, up to four ter-minal blocks are connected via the twisted ribbon cables.

Up to eight signal channels are routed via the terminal blocks.

Terminal block typesThere is a choice of five dif-ferent types of terminal block, available either with spring-loaded terminals or screw terminals.

Terminal block for 1-wire connection (TP1)If the ground potential of the individual sensors/actuators is not routed singly to the ter-minal block, the compact ter-minal block for 1-wire connec-tion with eight signal connections

is used. The potential supply must be taken into account by the user and can be imple-mented via busbars in the control cabinet, for example.

Terminal block with relays (TPR)If isolation or adaptation of the potential is necessary bet-ween the output module and the field signals, the terminal block fitted with relays is used. The user has 8 signal connec-tions for 2-wire connection for the field signals on the termi-nal block with relays. As for the terminal block with 3-wire connection, the module can be supplied with the potential from the terminal block or front connector module.

Terminal block for 2 A modules (TP2)The 2 A modules of SIMATIC S7 can be connected to the ter-minal block specially desi-gned for them.

Terminal block for analog signals (TPA)For the analog modules of SIMATIC S7, a special ter-minal block is available for analog signals. With this ter-minal block, the signals can be connected easily and comfortably. The shields of the signal leads can be termi-nated on an optional shield plate using the associated shield connection terminals.

Please take special note of the following:All cores of the twisted ribbon cable are needed to transmit the signals of the 2 A modules. For this reason, the supply of power to the module must be wired separately.

Terminal diagrams of the ter-minal blocks can be found under "Configuring" from page 5/3 onwards, on the lower half of each page.

See page 2/24 for connecting a twisted ribbon cable to the 16-pin connectors.

Wiring of analog modules for the SIMATIC S7-400 with SIMATIC TOP connect

An analog terminal block is available for wiring SIMATIC S7-400 modules with SIMA-TIC TOP connect. The follo-wing notes on connection must be observed during wiring.

Load power supplyOn the front connector module, there are separate terminals for the load voltage L+ and M. This allows the load power supply for the analog module to be connected either to the front connector module or via the terminal block.

The front connector module and terminal block can be located at a distance of up to 30 m apart.

Terminal assignmentOn the terminal block TPA, the individual terminals are labeled alphabetically. This makes it easier for you to assign the individual termin-als on the analog module to the terminals of the terminal block. The assignments of terminals on the analog module to those on the terminal block are shown in the table onpage 2/31.

Application

The flexible connection en-sures a rapid and direct con-nection between the input/output modules of the SIMATIC S7-400 and the indi-vidual elements in the control cabinet. Single cores which have already been connected reduce the wiring outlay. The core cross-sections of 0.5 mm² allow higher current flows.

Features

Single cores can be directly routed to each ele-ment in the control cabinet. The greater cross-sections allow higher current flows with a lower voltage drop.Reduction in wiring over-head thanks to the simple plug-in connection be-tween preassembled cable and I/O module.Simple wiring; the numbers printed on the cores corre-spond to the connection point on the I/O connector.Clearly arranged control cabinet wiring thanks to bunched single cores.

S7-400 with single cores

Design

The flexible connectionconsists of:

Front connectorThe front connector is plugged into the S7-400 modules instead of the con-ventional front connector; 46 single cores are at-tached to its screw or crimp contacts.46 single coresA number is printed on each of the cores accord-ing to their connection point on the front connector. The cores are bunched with cable ties.Standard lengths are 2.5 m, 3.2 m and 5.0 m. Special lengths are available on request.

Front connector with single cores

In the case of the front con-nector with single cores, 32 digital input and output sig-nals are directly connected to the I/Os. The single cores are attached with screw or crimp contacts fitted in the front connector and cut off neatly at the other end.

The cores can be easily as-signed because their identi-fiers are printed according to the pin label on the front con-nector.

Example of system cabling for SIMATIC S5 shown with theSIMATIC S5-115

General

The wiring of SIMATIC S5 I/O modules to the sensors and actuators is a significant factor with regard to time and cost, control cabinet construction and ease of servicing.Setting up such connections is easy, fast and reliable with SITOP connection. In contrast to conventional individual wiring, systemcabling uses preassembled cables. It only remains for them to be plugged in.This does away with the time-consuming connection of up to 50 single cores per interface.

System cabling forSIMATIC S5

Three cabling variants are offered to meet the various control cabinet concepts:

Fully modular connectionEach component is plugged in individually. The system comprises:

A front connector moduleA connecting cableA termination block

The fully modular configura-tion means that inventories are kept to a minimum.

Modular connectionThe front connector and con-necting cable are combined to form a single unit. The connection therefore only comprises:

A front connector elementA termination block

One interface less is required as compared with the fully modular connection making it the connection which is the quickest to assemble.

Flexible connectionConsists of:

Front connector with attached single cores

The blue cores are numbered and can be directly routed to each element in the control cabinet.

Front connector module, connecting cable and termination panel (transfer module)

General

The fully modular connection is the optimum solution where different SIMATIC S5 systems are in use. The full modularity reduces warehousing to a minimum. The connection transmits the signals of 32 inputs/outputs. For separation into bytes, the signals can be distributed over four lines (4 x 8 I/O).

Features

Simple plug-in connection of front connector module, connecting cable andtermination panel.

No test times because tested preassembled cables are used.

Wiring errors are elimina-ted.

Clearly arranged control cabinet wiring.

The 4 x 14-pin version allows subdivision into4 x 8 signals.

Minimum spare parts storage for front connector modules and cables.

Each component can be replaced individually.

Design

Front connector module

The front connector module is a modified front connector and is plugged into the I/O card of the PLC. The module has a 50-pin male connector for the connecting cable, via which 32 signals with separ-ate power supply are routed. With the 4 x 14-pin version, the 32 signals are divided into 4 bytes and transmitted via one connecting cable each.

Connecting cableThe preassembled round cable connects the front con-nector module to the termina-tion panel. The cable has core cross-sections of0.14 mm² and IDC connec-tors at both ends. There are 14-pin versions (for 8 I/O) and 50-pin versions (for 32 I/O).Standard lengths are 1.0 m, 2.0 m and 2.5 m. Special lengths are available.

Termination panel (transfer module)The panel has screw-terminal connection for sensors/actua-tors and plug-in connection for the connecting cable. The transfer modules are availa-ble for 32 or 8 signal paths, optionally with or without LED for signal status indication:

For single-wire connection of sensors and actuators. For three-wire sensors with positive/negative supply for the individual sensors. For four-wire sensors with positive/negative supply and PE connection for the sensors.

At the user's discretion, the PE terminal can be used to connect the shields. The transfer modules are snapped onto a DIN rail.

Termination panel(terminal block)This has screw terminals or spring-loaded terminals for sensors and actuators. It ena-bles the connection of up to eight channels and the sup-ply. The terminal blocks are also snapped onto a DIN rail

Front connector element and transfer module

General

With the modular system cab-ling, the front connector and connecting cable form one unit; the front connector ele-ment. One interface is thus dispensed with, compared to the fully modular connection. This type of cabling is there-fore the fastest connection to set up between the I/O module and the transfer module.

Features

Simple plug-in connection of the preassembled cable to the I/O module and transfer module.

No test times because tested preassembled cables are used.

Wiring errors are eliminated

Clearly arranged control cabinet wiring.

No additional interface at the I/O module.

Design

Front connector elementThe 50-core cable is directly attached to the modified front connector (for 32 I/O). The core cross-section is0.14 mm².Standard lengths are 1.0 m, 2.0 m and 2.5 m. Special lengths are available on request.

Transfer moduleThis has screw-terminal con-nection for sensors/actuators and plug-in connection for the connecting cable. The trans-fer modules are available for 32 or 8 signal paths, optio-nally with or without LED for signal status indication, in the following versions:

For single-wire connection of sensors and actuators. For three-wire sensors with positive-negative supply for the individual sensors. For four-wire sensors with positive-negative supply and PE connection for the sensors.

At the user's discretion, the PE terminal can be used to connect the shields. The transfer modules are snapped onto a DIN rail.

Front connector with single cores

General

The flexible connectionensures a rapid and direct connection between the input/output modules of theSIMATIC S5 and the indivi-dual elements in the control cabinet. The core cross-sections of 0.5mm² allow higher current flows.

Design

Terminal blocks with 8 NO relays(See description on page 2/9)

Energizing side Note for terminal block with 8 NO relays

In order to protect the relay contacts inductive loads must be dampened externally with an effective suppressor circuit. No measures have been taken to this effect in the TPR.

The plug connector may only be worked on when no voltage is present.

If SELV voltage and 230 V voltages or voltages consisting of different phases are to be used on a mixed basis at the out-puts, these must be divided up between both contact groups or one output within the group must remain unused.

A relay contact occupies two neighboring terminals respec-tively. Evaluation of the creepage distances and clearances accor-ding to branch and application specific regulations is left to the user. The required information can be found under the technical specifications relating to the creepage distances and clearances. The required information can be found in the technical specifiations under „Clearance and leakage paths“ (see figure on page 2/10).

Year 2000 compliance

Year 2000 compliance is not only relevantto data processing systems, but also toproducts, systems and installations thatare implemented in automation and drivesapplications.Apart from hardware and software components, user pro-grams that process the date are particularly susceptible to the Year 2000 problem. In the Siemens Automation and Drives Group, as far as our own automation products and systems are concerned, we are working with some urgency on ensuring the transition to the next century is as smooth as possible for our customers.Following the internationally recognized Test Profile of the Bri-tish Standards Institution (BSI), we are conducting detailed investigations into the behavior of our products. The results of these investigations can be found in our Year 2000 product database at the Internet address:http://www.ad.siemens.de/jahr2000.

In installations, however, combinations of products as well as customization and extensions to products and systems can result in constellations that may lead to the malfunction of individual products or systems or of the plant due to the Year 2000 date change.

Any queries should be addressed to your local Siemens contact person.
