Note for teachersTongue twisted or brain twisted?

At the beginning of the play one of our leading ladies, ( inthis case, the inspector ) will enter the scene of thecrime, ( the room where the audience is) ready and convincedthat the only reason she could have been called to thismeeting is because there has been a terrible crime.She is a very committed French investigator, so much so thatshe cannot see what is obvious. She is meeting with a groupof teenage students and that there is no dead body.

Her assistant is so enthusiastic about this job he cannot doit that well and he stumbles over his own words( se confude ) with everything he says .  This is the gag:

Assistant Smart:  This house is surrounded. I am afraidI must not ask anyone to leave the room . (he stops) NoI must ask nobody. (he stops) no! (he stops) I must askeverybody to (he stops)I must not ask anyone to leavethe ro…(he stops) No one must be asked by me to leavethe room (he stops) Shall I leave the room?

Assistant Smart: Understand?

The class: You don’t want anyone to leave the room!

 Teacher: why not?

Assistant Smart: Elementary, since the body was found inthis room. And noone has left it,  it is highlyprobable, in fact almost a complete certainty thereforethat the murderer must be somebody in this room . . .

Teacher: What body?Assistant Smart: The murderer of this body is somebodyin the room, this the room which nobody must leave ( shestops) Somebody who could be anybody relative to thiscase is in this room, so nobody may leave with theirbody, leaving the body here in the room with everybody,

Inspector Tiger: Now, I do speak to intromoose dyself. Iam sorry (she stops)

No, I do speak to allude to myself to you eerrm, pleaseallow my intro to loose myself, I mean avow me to promise you we will meet (she stops)

No, I allow me to introduce you to me…excuse madam!(she stops)

Allow me to introduce myself. I must ask that no oneleave the room (she stops)

 Allow me to introduce myself. I am inspector Tiger

Assistant Smart: Tiger?

Assistant Smart: What ? Where? Tiger? What tiger?

(Realises his mistake). Me tiger, you jane. Grr! errr..I beg your pardon.

She speaks quite fast and since this part becomes almost atongue­twister it is very important that you and yourstudents are fully aware of her situation, so you can enjoyit better!

1­ We invite you to read this to your students and give themthe opportunity to perform this in front of their mates asfast ( but as well performed,) as they can!

Example: “Perhaps I could share with you the case I solved,where seven silly sheet slitters were caught sillylyslitting sheets and were accused of selling blackmarket seashells by the sea shore . . .  No? Perhaps another time.”

2­ Ask your students to write her request in as many ways aspossible!That means, lets untwist her! (She doesnt want anyone toleave the room).

3­ Can you tell us what are the differences between:
