On behalf of Summa Health System and our many grateful patients and their families, thank you for your generous
support in 2014. Your gifts, totaling nearly $8 million, played a significant role in helping us deliver exceptional
patient care at Summa.
In the pages of this report, you will read about some of our donors and the contributions that helped make 2014 an
exciting year, including an inspirational $2 million gift from Vincent and Nancy DiGirolamo. This gift brings the
couple’s total support to more than $4 million and makes the DiGirolamos the most generous individual donors in
Summa history. We are humbled by their dedication to Summa and proud to count them among our most loyal friends.
Every gift to Summa makes an immeasurable difference in the lives of our patients. It is an honor to thank each of
you for your partnership in advancing Summa’s mission to provide the highest quality, compassionate care to our
patients and contribute to a healthier community.
Gratefully yours,
Dear Friends,

Harry Donovan
World War II Purple Heart veteran Harry Donovan was only 17 when he enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1944. He survived multiple enemy encounters during seven different invasions in the Pacific. Sustained by his strong faith, he returned to civilian life a grateful man. But he never forgot – nor stopped helping – other veterans.
“God has been good to me. Serving in the Navy was the proudest time of my life. I am honored to give back to other veterans,” says Mr. Donovan, who was instrumental in opening Valor Home for homeless veterans in Akron in 2013.
Through a $100,000 gift in 2014 from The Donovan Veterans Fund of Akron Community Foundation, Mr. Donovan and his wife, Fran, created the Harry and Fran Donovan Fund for Veteran Care at Summa. Helping Summa reach and treat more individuals who are struggling with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is one of many ways the fund helps veterans.
“I think of trauma as having tentacles that can intrude into different areas of a patient’s life – psychological well-being, job performance, physical health, relationships,” says Patrick Palmieri, PhD. He is Director of the Center for the Treatment and Study of Traumatic Stress at Summa – one of only a few of its kind in the nation.
“Educating health professionals to recognize trauma and its far-reaching effects is central to our mission,” says Joseph D. Varley, MD, Chair, Department of Psychiatry and holder of the Jim and Vanita Oelschlager Chair in Psychiatry and Behavioral Health.
One veteran already benefitting from the program is Kelly Albrecht.Following 13 months of active duty in Iraq, the Kansas native
developed PTSD and battled symptoms for almost eight years. When his wife’s career brought the family to Northeast Ohio, he turned to Summa. “I needed more than pills. I wanted to get to the root of the problem – to dive in and work it from the inside out.”
After only six weeks in the program, Mr. Albrecht and his wife, Stephanie, noticed dramatic improvements. “I’m off all sleeping medication,” says the stay-at-home father. “I’m much better at handling crowded places. I’m more comfortable riding in vehicles and talking with strangers.
“Growing up, I was that guy who people came to for cheering up,” says Mr. Albrecht. “I want to get back to that.”
With help from Summa and through the Donovans’ support, he’s on his way.

R. Douglas Trochelman, MD
At Summa Cancer Institute, the fight against cancer – from the daily battle to return each patient to wellness to the end goal of its complete eradication – builds on a strong foundation of philanthropic support.
In 2014, Vincent and Nancy DiGirolamo became the most generous individual donors in Summa Health System history. Their $2 million gift brought their total philanthropic support for Summa to more than $4 million. Their most recent gift supports the Vincent and Nancy DiGirolamo Endowed Chair in Oncology, which was established in 2007. Their 2007 gift also created the Vincent and Nancy DiGirolamo Cancer Symposium, an annual gathering of cancer experts that helps keep Summa CancerInstitute at the forefront of patient care.
“We are profoundly grateful for Vince and Nancy’s support – and that of so many others,” says R. Douglas Trochelman, MD, DiGirolamo chairholder and Summa Cancer Institute Medical Director. “Their generosity helps us invest in talent and technology that strengthen our ability to deliver high-quality, compassionate cancer care to thousands of patients every year.”
Summa’s emphasis on quality inspired the DiGirolamos’ support. During his 30 years on the Summa Health System Board of Directors, Mr. DiGirolamo saw quality reflected in every Summa employee – from cafeteria workers to the medical staff. So did Mrs. DiGirolamo, who served on the Women’s Board of Summa Health System for 27 years as a patient volunteer.

Mrs. DiGirolamo experienced Summa Cancer Institute’s competent, compassionate care firsthand through her own battle with the disease.
“When Nancy had her challenges with cancer, I saw Summa’s quality of care in action,” Mr. DiGirolamo says. “It’s something Summa takes very seriously, and we are very grateful for that. The hospital system has grown over the years, and quality of care has grown right with it.”
A retired National City (now PNC Bank) executive, Mr. DiGirolamo views Summa Health System as a mainstay of the local economy. “It’s very important for the well-being of the community that this important asset continues to thrive.”

Christina Merchant, RN
Christina Merchant, RN, treats her patients like family. Her caring nature is one of the qualities that make her an excellent nurse and drive her to become an even better one. That’s why she is pursuing an advanced nursing degree at Kent State University. Her commitment to self-improvement mirrors Summa’s commitment to delivering the highest level of quality care.
Milton Wiskind believes in that commitment too. Inspired by Summa’s emphasis on patient-centered care, he and his late wife, Edith, chose to help Summa’s nurses, one of many groups that benefit from their generosity. Their gift supports a nursing scholarship that enables Christina to pursue her dream to become a nurse practitioner in geriatrics.
“With the aging population and a predicted shortage of physicians, more nurses will be needed to provide specialized care,” says Mr. Wiskind, a retired executive at Akron’s Myers Industries. “We wanted to help the nurses who provide that care so compassionately.”
“At Summa, we encourage our nurses to pursue master’s degrees and certifications in their areas of expertise,” says Lanie Ward, RN, Senior Vice President and Chief Nursing Officer in charge of Summa’s team of more than 1,900 nurses. “Generous donors like the Wiskinds help make that possible.”
“It’s all about our continuous journey to improve care,” adds Barbara Brunt, RN, Summa’s Magnet Program Director.
In 2011, Summa Akron City and Summa St. Thomas hospitals became the first adult hospitals in Summit County to achieve
Magnet status, the ultimate credential for high-quality nursing. Conferred by the American Nurses Credentialing Center, Magnet status is currently held by only 7 percent of hospitals nationwide.
Christina, the first person in her family to attend college, is very grateful for the scholarship. Her handwritten notes about her progress endeared her to the Wiskinds, especially Mrs. Wiskind, who passed away in April 2014.
“Christina’s middle name is Angelina,” says Mr. Wiskind. “I told her that her patients probably call her an angel.”
That’s exactly how Christina Merchant thinks of him.

African-American women are more likely to die from breast cancer
than women of other ethnicities, often because they are diagnosed
at an advanced stage due to differences in access to breast cancer
screening. Summa Screens helps address this disparity.

committed financial support for Summa’s
work with pregnant women dealing with
addiction to opiates, a growing problem
in Northeast Ohio.
“”
Summa’s program for pregnant women with addictive
disorders addresses some of the critical causes of infant mortality
in a state that has one of the worst mortality records in the
nation. We recognized that Summa’s program could help us
move the needle on this important issue.

I am privileged to help train young physicians, an opportunity I owe to my parents,
Samuel and Kathleen Bauman, who stressed the importance of education as a
lifelong endeavor. My gift honors their memory and their commitment to education,
which ultimately benefits our patients today while opening doors for the next
generation of physicians.
Dr. Bauman and his wife, Debby,
committed their charitable support for
cardiovascular care at Summa. Their
generosity is recognized with the
naming of the Samuel B. and Kathleen

ambassadors to the community. In 2015, Summa plans to establish additional Leadership Councils.

Summa Legacy advisory Council
The Summa Legacy Advisory Council,
established in October 2014, includes the
region’s leading legal, financial and wealth
planning professionals. Council members
assist Summa benefactors in structuring
their estate or planned gifts. The Legacy
Leadership Award, recognizing a council
member for his or her professional advocacy
on behalf of Summa Health System, is
presented at the group’s annual meeting.
