As the region’s only Integrated

Delivery System, Summa Health

System provides a multilayered

network of care. No longer

must our communities choose

between local access and

nationally-ranked medicine.

Between comforting compassion

and medical breakthroughs.

Between saving money and

saving lives. Our hospitals,

health insurance company

and physicians integrate their

efforts, easing each patient’s

ever-evolving healthcare journey.

This is a very exciting time in Summa Health System’s history. We are in a better, stronger place as we evolve into a truly Integrated Delivery System. That integration is the guiding force of our success as a leading healthcare provider in Northeast Ohio.

Our business model as an Integrated Delivery System is among our greatest strengths – as we continue to deliver on our core principles of value to our patients, our members, our employees, our donors, our physicians and the communities we serve.

The integrated model is based on the principle of value and providing integrated care to improve the health of the many populations we serve. To this end, Summa Health System has evolved into a system with six hospitals, the SummaCare health plan, Summa Physicians, Inc., independent physicians on the medical staff, multiple foundations and an expanded ambulatory network.

In 2008, change came with a new administration in Washington, D.C. – one committed to reforming the U.S. system of healthcare. With the flexibility inherent in an Integrated Delivery System, Summa Health System is far better equipped to respond to the coming changes than many others.

We already have the groundwork in place to transition to a true health care model – rather than a sick care

This new facility provides greater access to healthcare in one of the fastest growing communities in Northeast Ohio – and builds on our affiliation with Summa Wadsworth-Rittman Hospital. In northern Summit County, we entered into a joint venture with Western Reserve Hospital Partners to build a new full service hospital serving the healthcare needs of residents in northern Summit County and southern Cuyahoga County. The northern hospital will bring together primary care physicians, surgeons and specialists in an environment managed by physicians to care for patients with the same Summa standards of care and value.

It is Summa’s Integrated Delivery System that gives us the framework for this kind of innovation and flexibility. And it is the same system that allows us to deliver the highest level of quality care and cost efficiency to our patients and members.

For these and many other achievements of 2008 – I am grateful. And for the exciting changes to come in 2009 – I am filled with hope and confidence.

In good health,

Thomas J. Strauss President and Chief Executive Officer

model. As an Integrated Delivery System, we are set to provide value, innovative solutions and a true continuum of care for our patients and members.

Change can be feared – or it can be seen as an opportunity. As the landscape in local healthcare continued to change in 2008, we at Summa Health System saw an opportunity to improve the delivery of healthcare.

Summa took a proactive role in the discussion of national healthcare reform, as we hosted our first Health Policy Summit in October 2008. With a panel of national health policy experts, we presented Summa’s “Nine for ’09” plan. These nine principles act as a guide for creating a healthcare system that works for everyone. Please take time to review them at www.summahealth.org.

2008 was a landmark year for innovative joint ventures with physicians. Summa finalized partnerships with the Crystal Clinic to build the Crystal Clinic Orthopaedic Center on the Summa Akron City Hospital main campus. Jointly owned by Summa and the Crystal Clinic Orthopaedic surgeons, this will be one of the largest orthopaedic programs in the country. In partnership with a local physician’s group in the Medina area, Northeast Ohio Management Service Organization, we completed plans for a new Medina Ambulatory Health Center.

2008 was the beginning of a much broader regional healthcare delivery system for the residents in this region. As Summa Health System grew, more people gained more access to high quality healthcare.

Summa’s footprint expanded to include partnerships with Wadsworth-Rittman Hospital – with its nationally recognized levels of patient satisfaction and strong outpatient care – as well as Barberton Hospital, highly regarded for its acute care, behavioral health, rehabilitation services and comprehensive cardiac services. They are now part of the system that includes

Summa Akron City, Summa St. Thomas, Summa Cuyahoga Falls General Hospitals and Robinson Memorial Hospital, an affiliate of Summa Health System. Now, Summa patients have access to a comprehensive six-hospital system with 15 ambulatory sites for outpatient treatments in Green, Hudson, Fairlawn, Cuyahoga Falls, Streetsboro and others.

The impact became evident in 2008 as Summa hospitals began the process of sharing information and creating performance improvement teams. Each hospital was measured against the others with internal benchmarking – all with the goal of providing a standardized quality

of medical care to every patient at every Summa facility.

In order to serve a growing community of patients in northern Summit County, Summa announced plans to build a new 100-bed, full service community hospital. This joint venture with the physicians’ group, Western Reserve Hospital Partners, began operation in what was Summa Cuyahoga General Falls Hospital.

Joint ventures with physicians allowed Summa to extend care further into the community. After a great deal of planning, Summa completed an agreement with Crystal Clinic orthopaedic surgeons,

Summa’s Integrated Delivery System brings value to the residents of this region who now have access to exceptional healthcare within their own communities. It reduces costs for patients, healthcare providers and Summa Health System. Each facility within Summa benefits from sharing advances in research, resources, technology and quality. The result is extraordinary patient care provided in an environment of comfort and compassion.

A larger Summa system means greater access to specialized, high quality care, bringing cost-effective services closest to the communities that need them.

The value of integration and collaboration is clear. For example, Summa St. Thomas Hospital and Summa Barberton Hospital both have behavioral health services. Together, Summa leadership is determining how to share and deliver the programs needed across the region. Another example – the medical professionals at Summa affiliate Robinson Memorial Hospital are providing the psychiatric evaluations often needed in the Emergency

An Integrated Delivery System is about creative partnership. It is about delivering the best and most cost efficient patient care. It is about aligning incentives with our hospitals, physicians and healthcare plan. And it is about moving beyond that boundary and understanding the many elements outside our system with whom we work, including independent private practice physicians.

Many private practice physicians want to remain independent and Summa Health System supports that wish. As the physician

hospital organization of Summa Health System, Summa Health Network is committed to supporting the system’s physician alignment strategy through the clinical integration model.

“Clinical integration is really designed to bring data together to help physicians deliver care to their patients,” said Charles Vignos, president of Summa Health Network and system vice president of managed care. “We knew electronic technology had to be a major part of Clinical Integration.”Enter Electronic Medical Records,

more commonly referred to as simply EMR. This technology

does more than simply replace a patient’s paper records. EMR offers a more timely, accurate documentation of visits. It is the

When your doctor tells you the diagnosis is cancer, your life changes in an instant. Your body, your feelings, your family, your day-to-day

life – are all changed. As you begin to process what this means and how it affects your life, the challenges you may have to face may be daunting, overwhelming and difficult.

It takes integrated delivery of care to help you meet that challenge – right

on the front lines, where it matters most. It takes multi-disciplinary cancer treatment across many specialties, with specialists working as a team to design treatment plans that offer the possibilities for best outcomes. It takes a team that understands genuine compassion is as critical to the patient’s well-being as it is for their family and support group.

Integrated Delivery means every medical professional on the oncology team collaborates to provide the most effective cancer treatment for each patient. That kind of treatment is throughout the Summa Health System. For instance, a patient may receive radiation treatment at Summa Barberton

Hospital’s Parkview Center or at Summa affiliate Robinson Memorial Hospital – or receive infusion treatment at Summa Western Reserve Hospital or Summa Wadsworth-Rittman Hospital.

Across the entire Summa system, not just in the oncology service line – but in all service lines – Summa fully integrates all its resources. All service lines are developing strategic plans to meet the needs of the community with a “system focus” under the direction of system vice president of Service Lines, Unhee Kim.

In 2008, cancer treatment at Summa was literally transformed. Oncology services were combined into the

“The day we opened the new center, it felt like The Wizard of Oz going from black-and-white to technicolor,” said Linda Breedlove, R.N., system administrative director of the oncology service line and project manager for the new cancer center. “Tears flowed as patients thanked us for listening to their concerns.”

Society of Clinical Oncology for excellence in clinical research. Cancer survival rates continue to rise and our research contributes to this success rate as we have more than 100 clinical trials underway. Currently, all Summa hospitals offer clinical trials.

Cancer patients today expect high-quality medical treatment, but they are most grateful for the care and comfort provided by physicians, nurses and staff throughout the entire Summa Health System. That is the kind of care that remains at the core of Summa’s Integrated Delivery System.

You are cared for by a comprehensive medical team that offers psychological counseling, rehabilitation and education about your treatment and disease. Your family members are welcomed and are considered an important part of your treatment program. Depending on your need and preference, infusion stations were designed to give you either privacy or allow you to engage with other patients at the Center. Early studies prove patients who receive treatment in this type of environment experience less stress.

Summa Akron City Hospital’s oncology program was recognized on two separate occasions as one of only 10 community oncology programs honored annually by the American

For many Summa Health System physicians, the day to day business of being a physician became easier in 2008. Membership in Summa Physicians, Inc., better known as SPI, allows doctors to be, well, doctors. SPI is a large, multi-specialty physician group that is part of Summa Health System. As employed Summa physicians, the business end of running a practice is easier to manage.

Summa is a leader nationally in the area of employed physicians, currently serving as a site visit destination for other hospitals and healthcare systems. With the

changes taking place in healthcare delivery today, the SPI model is clearly the direction in which many health systems are headed.

“In the past, doctors and hospitals worked independently,” said T. Clifford Deveny, M.D., system vice president for physician alignment and president of Summa Physicians, Inc. “SPI allows us to work together more efficiently toward the same goals and outcomes.”

When SPI began in 2006, the primary objective was to keep exceptional physicians in this

region. Recruitment and retention were major challenges. Residents were graduating and moving away. Area physicians were moving to other locations because the cost of practicing medicine was high. Summa leaders quickly saw SPI as a way to address these challenges.

As an employed physician, the doctor benefits because the time and energy formerly spent running a business are now spent serving patients. Other advantages include stable management of liability expenses as well as corporate overhead. Our community and

System meets community and hospital needs for physician services now and in the future, SPI allows Summa to serve as better stewards of the area’s healthcare needs.

for granted the quality of care would just be here.”

The model is working. With the current count of 202 employed physicians, SPI continues to grow.

As part of Summa’s Integrated Delivery System, this network of physicians eventually will be on a common information system. It will allow for a more efficient way to deliver care. And it is about value to patients, to the community and to our region. With a mission to promote stronger affiliation and employment of physicians in order to ensure that Summa Health

Imagine professionals in a healthcare system caring for one individual patient with diabetes while evaluating data about an entire segment of patients struggling with that very same condition. Then imagine these individuals using that information to understand trends and develop programs to treat and prevent diabetes.

Now imagine this system is so focused on helping a diabetic patient manage his health that they consider it a failure when his condition results in a hospital stay.

This is the system at Summa Health System – because SummaCare is a critical element of our Integrated Delivery System. Whether a patient is diagnosed with diabetes, congestive heart failure, cancer, or other disease, SummaCare’s treatment of one patient impacts the results of how a population of patients will be treated in the future.

SummaCare serves more than 120,000 members, including

employer groups, individuals and Medicare patients. SummaCare defined and evaluated healthcare trends for populations of membership such as Medicare patients, specific age groups and employees in a specific employer group.

SummaCare invested in new, technology to analyze data by groups of patients and predict the likelihood of a condition progressing to become a more serious, chronic disease. This “predictive modeling” software uses medical claims data to act as an alert for the physician and patient and influences future treatment for an entire population of patients.

Other hospitals and healthcare systems provide excellent “episodic” care to treat disease. Through SummaCare, we not only provide one-on-one case management for a single patient with a chronic disease, we identify trends to improve the health of that entire population of patients. We feed that data to all our hospitals to improve clinical quality and outcomes for all Summa patients.

SummaCare continued to see growth in the Medicare Advantage plans in 2008. Seniors were attracted by overall value and lower cost with a $0 premium including pharmacy coverage and fewer out-of-pocket

and continued to emphasize employee health and wellness education as vital to keeping healthcare costs down.

As part of an Integrated Delivery System, SummaCare provides care on a personal level while improving healthcare quality and outcomes on a broad scale – from a single patient to an entire community.

dollars for co-pay and deductibles. But they also chose SummaCare for its very personal case management and coordination of care, especially in the transition from hospital to home or hospital to nursing home. SummaCare’s own nurses are the vital link between the patient, the physicians and more than 60 contracting hospitals.

At SummaCare, we witnessed the consequences of a serious economic downturn and responded by helping our employer members create flexible solutions. Employees facing higher premiums, co-pays and deductibles often defer medical care. SummaCare recognized this serious consequence

This is a vital part of achieving full integration as a health system.

Medical research has long been a cornerstone of Summa Health System. At the turn of the century, we created the first community hospital in Akron. Throughout the years, we consistently sought innovative ways to work in partnership with physicians and researchers to improve the health and well-being of the people in the regions we serve.

Much more than just a part of the culture at Summa, the focus on research and clinical innovation helps define us as leaders in the healthcare industry. In 2008, the Summa Foundation renewed and

further strengthened its partnership with Medical Education and Research, transforming the partnership into a true collaborative effort.

“This is a strong step and a vital part of achieving full integration as a health system” said August A. Napoli, president and COO of the Summa Foundation. “Full integration means we can better support the needs of the entire system and thereby enhance our value to the larger community.”

Napoli’s goal in aligning the work of the Summa Foundation with

education, clinical research and innovation is to attract and retain talent

to the region, increase credibility and prestige of the work of Summa’s physicians and researchers, encourage a more entrepreneurial culture and impact the regional and state economy. Through its collaborative work with Joseph Zarconi, M.D., system vice

Collaboration is the essence of integration. An example of this is the BioInnovation Institute in Akron (BIIA). The Summa Foundation played a lead role in planning, developing and launching BIIA. The Institute was awarded a $20 million grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, $10 million from First Energy and $8.6

BIIA also will increase employment opportunities through the retention of local talent while attracting professionals from around the world, potentially adding thousands of new jobs to the area.

Steven Schmidt, Ph.D., system director of research, Summa Health System, has been integrally involved in leading the configuration of the research agenda for BIIA on behalf of Summa Health System. Harnessing the region’s strengths in research, education and healthcare, BIIA expands Akron’s rich legacy in materials science to pioneer the next generation of life-enhancing and life-saving innovation.
