Street names: ice, tina, chrissy, speed, tweak, meth, & glass; just to name a few.

Methamphetamine is a stimulant that was produced in 1887 and used for soldiers in World War II to keep them fighting.

Later; athletes, truck drivers, students, etc. used meth to maintain alertness and perform better.

Meth was also used for medical reasons such as: diet, depression, etc.

Is administered by: snorting, oral pills, intravenously, and smoking.

Intravenous drug administration allows for the drug to get to the brain quickly and causes the abuser to feel a rush of happiness.

This drug is continually abused in a “binge & crash pattern”.

Increases amount of the neurotransmitter: dopamine

Dopamine is the pleasure receptor in the brain.

When this pleasure receptor is overloaded, the user becomes addicted to this overwhelming feelings of pleasure.

With abuse, emotional and cognitive problems associated with structural and functional changes in the brain develop, resulting in psychosis and other mental illnesses.

Meth abuse alters judgment and inhibition.
