It was Singapore’s, and indeed, South-East Asia’s, first entertainment complex to feature exquisite topless revues, cabaret theatre, restaurants and nightclubs under one roof. The visionary behind it was Shaw Sung Ching, a property developer. With no entertainment background behind him, he possessed a deep belief in his dream and a unique sense of courage and commitment in making that dream come true. And that he did. Tropicana enjoyed full houses every night for the first three years and remained profitable till it closed its doors 21 years later. Well-known for its high production qualities and top class entertainment, the niteclub featured top international stars of the time like Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Johnny Mathis, Tony Martin and Pat Boone. Even Frank Sinatra visited the complex. Its opening act was a specially flown in troupe of 14 Japanese dancers named Folies du Tropicana, and the place quickly established itself as the center for premium acts including keronchong ensembles, fashion shows, dances, acrobats, magicians, dagger and fire jugglers, beauty pageants and comedy acts. Tropicana’s last day of business was 31 May 1989 and as testimony to the incredible vision, energy and legacy left behind by its founder Shaw Sung Ching, ex-Tropicana staff still get together today, once every year for Chinese New Year. But Tropicana The Musical is a story less about tits than it is about balls. The balls of a nation of dream makers and catchers wanting to burst out of this tiny island. Based on real and imagined people and stories, Tropicana The Musical remembers an era of dreams that ruled and dreams that ruined. You’ll bust your gut laughing at its killer comedy and sob through its love songs as we invite you back into a time where dialogue had dialect, long-haired rockers strangled guitars in smoke-filled rooms, naive kampung girls fended off vice and virgin-hunters to make better lives for themselves, long-service secretaries hid secret loves, Eurasian radio DJs tangled with teenage hearts and gangland fights broke out in back alleys over turf and territory as a middle-aged tycoon walked away from everything he knew to change his destiny.
