RICHARD CARMONA, MD, was the 17th Surgeon General of the United States. He is now CEO of Canyon Ranch Health in Arizona and is Distinguished Professor of Public Health, Professor of Surgery and Clinical Professor of Pharmacy Practice and Science at the University of Arizona. His extensive leadership background in many disciplines includes medicine, law enforcement, the military, public health, higher education, emergency

preparedness, and healthcare management. He also brings an extraordinary life story of disadvantaged beginnings and an inspiring self-transformation from high school dropout to combat decorated Special Forces veteran.

ROBERT M. WACHTER, MD, is a professor and chair of the Department of Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco. Dr. Wachter coined the term “hospitalist” in 1996 and is generally regarded as the “father” of the hospitalist fi eld. Named by Modern Healthcare as one of 100 most infl uential people in healthcare, Dr. Wachter is a recognized thought

leader in healthcare quality, safety and organization of care. His book – The Digital Doctor: Hope, Hype and Harm at the Dawn of Medicine’s Computer Age (April 2015) – explores what it will take to successfully shift from “disruption” to “disruptive innovation.”

RIDLEY BARRON is a published author, internationally known speaker and tireless advocate for patient safety. He is also the Founder and President of Ridley Barron Ministries in Thompson Station, Tenn. Carrying the power of personal experience, Ridley approaches the subject of Patient Safety as few can. His powerful message of hope, healing, and forgiveness empowers patients,

families, clinicians and those impacted by adverse medical events. Barron has shared his story, “Every Half Second Counts,” in a variety of settings from coast to coast as well as in the words of his long-awaited book, Twist of Faith.

PATRICIA QUIGLEY, PHD, MPH, is a nurse consultant. She recently retired from the position of Associate Director, Veterans Integrated Service Network 8 Patient Safety Center of Inquiry. As Associate Chief of Nursing for Research, she was a funded researcher with the VA’s Research Center of Excellence: Maximizing Rehabilitation Outcomes. Her contributions to patient

safety, nursing and rehabilitation are evident at a national level – with an emphasis on clinical practice innovations designed to promote elders’ independence and safety. She is nationally known for her program of research in patient safety, particularly in fall prevention.
