SEMINAR ABSTRACT Sydney’s new world-class metro system is Australia’s biggest public transport project

and the largest urban rail infrastructure investment in the nation’s history.

Services start in the city’s north west in the second quarter of 2019 on Australia’s first

fully-automated railway, with 13 metro stations and 4,000 new commuter car parking

spaces.

From the north west, metro rail is being extended under Sydney Harbour, through

new underground city stations and south west to Bankstown.

In 2024, Sydney will have 31 metro railway stations and a 66km standalone metro

railway system.

Sydney Metro City & Southwest works are well underway. Major demolition in the city

has progressed to make way for the new stations, and the first of five tunnel boring

machines has arrived at the Marrickville dive site.

Tunnelling will start before the end of the year, delivering new 15.5 kilometre twin

metro railway tunnels from Chatswood to Sydenham, including under Sydney

Harbour.

Alan Morris, Deputy Project Director, Sydney Metro City & Southwest, will provide an

update on the Sydney Metro City & Southwest project and share details about the

work, including the route alignment, station locations, design and construction

planning for the project.

Linda Miller, Construction Director for the Tunnels and Station Excavation contract, Sydney Metro City & Southwest, will outline technical aspects of the tunnels and station excavation work, discussing progress at new city stations and share insights about milestones achieved to date, such as the production of the first of 99,746 concrete segments which will line the tunnels. SPEAKERS

Alan Morris – Deputy Project Director, Sydney Metro City & Southwest Alan is a civil engineer with more than 30 years heavy civil engineering project management experience. He’s worked on railway projects in large urban environments such as London, Hong Kong, Sydney and Kuala Lumpur. Alan has project management experience on metros, high-speed and inter-urban railways

comprising tunnels, viaducts, stations, building demolition, foundations, brownfield railway interfaces involving design, procurement, construction and handover to operations. Prior to joining Sydney Metro, Alan was the Construction Director of the recently completed Line 1 Metro in Kuala Lumpur, where he oversaw the successful delivery of a 50km fully-automated metro with 31 stations.

Linda Miller - Construction Director for the Tunnels and Station Excavation contract, Sydney Metro City & Southwest Linda has more than 25 years’ experience as an engineer and project manager on mega projects around the world, including a new Space Launch Complex at Cape Canaveral, Florida, and the “Big Dig” highway tunnel

under Boston, Massachusetts. She has first-hand experience where collaboration and innovation has helped benefit project construction and delivery, by improving safety and quality, as well as saving time and creating cost-efficiencies. Prior to this, Linda was the Project Manager of London’s Crossrail Farringdon Station and previously the Project Manager for Crossrail’s Connaught Tunnel Project, which included bringing a 135-year-old disused tunnel back to life. In 2017, Linda was selected in The Queen's Birthday 2017 Honours List as an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE), for services to engineering and for her work in promoting diversity that evolved from a personal passion for encouraging girls & women to join the global engineering & construction industry.
