NEWSLETTER : Sydenham Metro Upgrade DECEMBER 2019
Lift shafts being lifted into place.
Sydney Metro - Sydenham Station
Sydney Metro is Australia’s biggest public transport
project. Services started in May this year in the city’s
North West with a train every four minutes in the
peak. Metro rail will be extended into the CBD and
beyond to Bankstown in 2024.
In 2024, Sydney will have 31 metro railway stations and
a 66 km standalone metro railway system – the biggest
urban rail project in Australian history. There will be
ultimate capacity for a metro train every two minutes in
each direction under the Sydney city centre.
John Holland Pty Ltd and Laing O’Rourke Australia
are delivering the Sydenham Metro Upgrade.
Sydenham Station milestones
The construction of the new pedestrian concourse at
Sydenham Station is on schedule.
Lift shafts were recently placed into the back of columns
on platforms 4, 5 and 6 (pictured above) at the northern
end of the station. The platforms are now ready for the roof
canopies to be lifted onto the new structures, connecting
them with the existing platform buildings.
Sydenham aqueduct construction
The aqueduct being built over the heritage-listed Sydenham
Pit has taken shape in recent months.
The access ramp was moved from the northern side of the
pit to the southern side to make way for the construction of
the aqueduct. Work has also commenced on the in-ground
culverts and pump station upgrade.
Works will continue over the coming months, and the
aqueduct will be completed in 2020.

Stations between Sydenham and Campsie along the T3
Bankstown Line will temporarily close between 24 December
2019 and 5 January 2020 while the train line is being upgraded
to metro standards.
During this period, up to 90 buses in the busiest part of the
day will operate to provide extra services between Punchbowl
and Central Stations to keep customers moving over the
holiday period.
This major upgrade is being carried out during the quieter
Christmas and New Year holiday period, when patronage on
the T3 line drops by around 35 per cent.
Below is a table providing further information about the bus
timetable over the holiday period while the upgrade works
are taking place.
