The Rhine, Germany’s longest river, is extravagant in both length and its mystique. Joining us from Basel, Switzerland to Berlin will be Dr. John Morrow, who will weave the intricate details and stories of the Allied struggle to reach and ultimately cross the Rhine . Our journey down the Rhine also includes visits to storybook villages, romantic hilltop castles built by tyrannical kings, and areas where hunter-gatherers settled 200,000 years before the Romans brought vineyard culture to the Rhine.

We will have seven extraordinary days sailing from Basel to Cologne aboard Uniworld’s state-of-the-art S.S. Antoinette. Sailing from Basel we will include Colmar, Strasbourg, Speyer, Rudesheim, Koblenz, and Cologne. From Cologne, we continue via high-speed rail to the iconic city of Berlin and spend three nights at the Rocco Forte Hotel de Rome, our home in Berlin as we immerse ourselves in the art, music, and history of this iconic city.

here between 20th July and 15th October 1915, resulting in 17,000 deaths.

This battleground, classified as a historic monument, is an astounding sight: the infrastructure of the solid system of the German defenses are in a remarkable state of preservation, with the vestiges of the French trenches in light running soil they are a moving testimony to the war of the trenches. The Linge Memorial-Museum displays French and German objects found on site: weapons, munitions, scale model of the battlefield, photos, texts, maps, personal objects and relics, and audio-visual montages of photographs of the period.

Colmar has been called the prettiest town in the world, and it’s hard to argue with that designation.

Rainbow-hued half-timbered houses front peaceful little canals, flowers tumble from baskets

and window ledges, and cobblestone lanes lead to extraordinary examples of Gothic architecture (among them are the Dominican Church and St. Martin’s). You’ll see fairytale 16th-century houses, including the House of Heads, so called for the 111 carved heads decorating the façade, and Pfister House, the unmistakable inspiration for a bakery in the animated feature Howl’s Moving Castle.

As you ramble through the town, you may find it easy to believe the rumor that Colmar was spared during WWII bombing because pilots knew it was too beautiful to destroy. But during the War, Colmar was a strategic site: by November of 1944, Allied forces had pushed Nazi troops back to the Rhine River, where Nazi Forces then used the river as protection, and thus became the new line to hold. In December of 1944, French and American troops joined together to start a campaign to defeat the Nazis, and by February of 1945, they had eliminated the Nazis with significant casualties.

Spend the afternoon onboard, simply enjoying the views from the ship’s lounges or decks and sampling some of the ship’s amenities. Sip a cocktail on the Sun Deck or relax with a massage. A special Captain’s Welcome Reception and Dinner will be prepared for you this evening.

An optional afternoon tour (included in the tour cost) will be offered to the WWI Linge Museum and Battlefield. The Linge is a first world war (1914-1918) battlefield. One of the bloodiest confrontations of the war took place

Strasbourg is invariably described as quaint, a rather overused word that in this case is perfectly apropos. Whether you see it via a canal boat or on foot with an insightful local expert, this historic town with its cobbled lanes, half-timbered homes, giant stork nests and impossible-to-resist pastry shops will win your heart. You may choose to see Strasbourg, which would give you an enlightening and relaxing overview of this historically important city. Or you may experience the historic core as the locals do, with a walking tour. If you’re feeling adventurous, take advantage of Uniworld’s bicycles or Nordic walking sticks and explore the banks of the river.

The Liberation of Strasbourg constituted the dramatically symbolic high point for the rehabilitation of the honor of French armed forces as the Allies advanced across France toward Germany in 1944.

An afternoon tour will be offered (and included in the journey ) to the Alsace Moselle Memorial. Immersed in the destiny of the border region, the Alsace-Moselle from 1870 to the present day, with a particular focus on the Second World War, the totalitarian system and a space devoted to Franco-German reconciliation and the European construction.

Expect the unexpected in Speyer, where ancient treasures harmoniously coexist with modern day innovation. Speyer is considered the birthplace of Protestantism, which was largely influenced by Martin Luther.

For something really unexpected, venture into a spooky, candlelit tasting room to sample flavorful elixirs made from wine vinegars. Utterly unique and surprisingly delicious, and something you’ll experience with no other river cruise line. The ship docks in Mannheim, where you’ll have to choose between boarding a motorcoach to the nearby town of Speyer for a guided walking tour or taking in an exclusive tasting at a local vinegar estate.

Your floating hotel arrives in Rüdesheim, one of the most charming ports of call in the Rhine Valley. This city has a long history going back to Roman times and is famous for the Drosselgasse, a narrow, bustling lane of shops and wine bars, as well as its impressive Niederwald Monument, built to celebrate the re-establishment of the German empire in the late 19th century. Experience Germany’s fabled Rhine River in one of two ways—a tasting of estate-grown Rieslings at Castle Vollards or an invigorating vineyard hike.

Cruising out of Rüdesheim you’ll enter the sublimely beautiful Upper Middle Rhine Valley. Byron described it as “a work divine, a blending of all beauties.” Turner painted it. Wagner used it as inspiration for his opera Götterdämmerung. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this scenic 40-mile (65-kilometer) stretch of the Rhine features a stunning, castle-dotted landscape lined with steep riverbanks graced with sloping vineyards, picturesque towns, and hilltops crowned by fairytale castles. You won’t want to miss the scenery as you sail into Boppard. In the evening, join a village stroll highlighting stately riverfront homes and the lingering traces of Boppard’s fascinating Roman past.

At the famous Deutsches Eck, or German Corner, where the Rhine and Moselle converge, lies one of Germany’s oldest and most beautiful towns – Koblenz. Vineyards, forests and four mountain ranges form the backdrop to the city, whose 2,000-year history has given rise to beautiful churches and castles, palatial residences and grand townhouses.

We will have an opportunity to experience ambiance deep within the medieval walls of Marksburg Castle. The castle has never been attacked. It is intact, much as it was in the 13th century. Get to know Koblenz, a historic town with a colorful past and eclectic architecture, and enjoy a scenic bike ride.

DAY 8 | SATURDAY, MAY 2: COLOGNE

You simply cannot visit Cologne without paying homage to its most notorious site, the Gothic masterpiece that serves as the city’s cathedral. Cologne was bombed over and over again during the war by Allied bombers because it was a major German city that was closest to England. It became a ravaged, smoking hell. The Cathedral was made of stone and thus, did not burn down, perhaps the only thing that saved it. By March 1945, the Allies had launched no less than 262 air assaults against Cologne, which resulted in a loss of 95% of its population.

The tank battle at Cologne Cathedral, although brief, is perhaps the most famous of all time. The British and the Americans were closing on the Rhine River. Reaching the Rhine, though, was one thing, crossing it was entirely another. What resulted was one of the most famous tank duels of WWII, and a cathedral that stood unfazed. After our tour of Cologne, we will board a high speed train to Berlin. Once in Berlin, we’ll be transferred to our hotel the spectacular Hotel de Rome.

Dinner and overnight is at our hotel. (B,L,D)
