• Sophie is a courageous young girl who has been turned to a crone by an evil witch. She has a talent of talking things to life. She was mistaken for her sister Lettie with whom Howl had a love affair. Howl hires her as a cleaning lady and later falls in love with her. She does not want to admit that she is in love with Howl because she sees Howl as a heartless heart-eater. She is eventually turned back into her former self.

• Howl is a very powerful wizard. He is very selfish using his magic for no one other than himself. He later turns out to be loving and compassionate toward Sophie. He is extremely concerned about his looks and in one part gets angry at Sophie for moving his bottles of potions because he accidently turns his hair red. He saves Sophie from a trap that the Witch of the Waste set for her, showing her he does love her.

Calcifer

May all your bacon burn!

• Calcifer is a hot head. He is literally fired up. Calcifer is a short tempered fire demon with a big attitude. He was caught by howl when he was a shooting star. And told howl that in order to serve Howl he had to be given an offering. So Howl gave Calcifer his heart and was bound to him. Calcifer then controlled the castle causing it to be a moving castle. Calcifer is under a contract that Sophie is trying to break because he made a deal with her that if she broke the contract with Howl then he would break the spell on her.

Plot

• A young woman named Sophie Hatter is the eldest of three daughters and she unknowingly talks life into objects. She is turned into an old crone by the Witch of the Waste who has mistaken Sophie for her sister, the current love interest of Howl. Sophie leaves her shop and finds work as a cleaning lady for the notorious Howl who is famous in her town for eating the hearts of beautiful young women. Sophie learns that Howl spreads these malicious rumors about himself to ensure his privacy and so that the king won't think highly of him. The door to his castle is actually a portal that opens up to four different places. Sophie strikes a bargain with Howl's resident fire demon, Calcifer. The deal is, if Sophie can break the contract Howl and Calcifer have signed, then Calcifer will return Sophie to her original form. But part of the contract says that neither Howl nor Calcifer can tell anyone the terms of the contract. Howl realizes that Sophie is under a spell and secretly attempts to remove the curse with little success.

• Howl's apprentice is named Michael Fisher and runs most of the day-to-day affairs of Howl's business. Martha, Sophie's sister, disguises herself as Lettie, Sophie’s other sister, so that they could switch places. When Prince Justin goes missing while searching for Wizard Suliman, the King orders Howl to find Suliman and Justin and kill the Witch of the Waste. Howl has been trying to avoid seeking a confrontation with the Witch of the Waste because, she has laid a curse on him. Howl attempts to weasel out of it by having Sophie pretend to be his mother and say that he is lazy and cowardice. Howl continues to avoid the Witch of the Waste until she lures Sophie into a trap. She believes that the Witch has taken Howl's current love interest who is Miss Angorian and goes to save her and is in turn captured by the Witch of the Waste. Howl comes to save Sophie and defeats the Witch of the Waste. He knew that Miss Angorian was actually the Witch's fire demon in disguise. The Witch's fire demon had taken control of the Witch. Sophie uses her talent of talking things to life to break the contract between Howl and Calcifer without killing either of them. When Howl awakens, he destroys the witch's fire demon. This breaks the curse on Wizard Suliman and Prince Justin. Sophie and Howl admit they love each other and Howl suggests they live happily ever after. The End.

Setting

• Most of the book takes place in Howls Castle and the rest takes place in the fictional monarchy of Ingary. The time is unknown.

Page 8: Howl’s Moving Castle

• I really liked Howl’s moving castle because it has everything. Horror, love, fantasy, action and some humor. I don’t like how confusing it is. I would make the story simpler and add less characters to keep the reader from being confused.

• I learned that just because someone seems one way it could really be a façade and they could be a completely different person. This book is a great example of not judging a book by its cover.
