Missy Franklin continued to draw our readers’ attention, this time at the Minneapolis Grand Prix, where she blew through the 1:00 mark in the women’s 100-meter backstroke in long course format with a 59.69. Also, for the fi rst time in quite some time, Franklin swam without braces, showing off her smile after each victory. Meanwhile, Michael Phelps, sporting a full goatee, began showing signs of returning to form as he started off the meet with a double.

Missy Franklin rocketed to her fi rst career world record during the Berlin stop of the 2011 FINA World Cup tour. Franklin clocked a 2:00.03 in the women’s 200-meter backstroke in short course format to down the 2:00.18 set by Shiho Sakai also in Berlin during the 2009 World Cup circuit. She became one of just four swimmers to ever break 2:01 in the event with Kirsty Coventry and Elizabeth Simmonds also being members of the 2:00 club.

Chad Le Clos and Therese Alshammar made some serious

money during the FINA World Cup circuit in 2011. On top of each winning $100,000 as the overall

winners for their respective gender, Le Clos ($45,500) and Alshammar ($26,000) hauled in the cash with

plenty of race winnings.

Missy Franklin: Pro or NCAA?

Our readers could not get enough of Missy Franklin, and Swimming World senior writer John Lohn chimed in with his thoughts on an issue weighing heavily on the minds of most within the sport. By the end of the FINA World Cup circuit in 2011, Franklin wound up turning down more than $70,000 in winnings to remain eligible to compete at the NCAA level when she gets a chance to even be recruited.

Swimming World Female High SchoolCo-Swimmer of the Year Jasmine Tosky Makes

College Commitment

The University of Southern California made some serious news on Halloween, as Swimming World Female High School Co-Swimmer of the Year Jasmine Tosky chose to compete for the Trojans collegiately. Palo Alto’s Tosky fi nished the year by sharing our national award with Rachel Bootsma of Eden Prairie. Tosky made her more indelible mark on the sport as a prep star by taking down Misty Hyman’s historic high school record in the 100-yard fl y.

Maryland Swimming and DivingProjected To Be Cut

In a cost-cutting move, Maryland announced that it would be cutting swimming and diving among a total of eight sports. Maryland did, however, give the team a chance to remain in existence if it can raise more than $11 million by the end of the year to cover eight years of expenses.

SwimmingWorld.TV Presents Pro Dual Meet 1

SwimmingWorld.TV helped the Professional Swimming League kick off its fi rst Pro Dual Meet comprised of a two-day long course meter setup in which swimmers representing East and West squads vied for $600 in prize money in each event. Darian Townsend walked away the big winner with more than $1,000 in winnings.

“My goal is to make it to the Olympic team. If I start

getting too wrapped up in medals and times and records, it’s just going to

stress me out.”

“I got my butt handed to me (at U.S. nationals in December). But it was a

wake-up call, and hopefully that won’t happen again.”

“Every time I get on the blocks and I race – it sounds weird, but I feel like I can actually beat anybody. All my tactics go out the window and I just think about trying to race and trying to beat the guy.”

“I couldn’t think of any better training partner in the U.S. (than Michael Phelps). He makes it a good atmosphere. When it’s time to get to work, he’ll really get to work and motivate everyone.”
