O ur Second Annual Ladies Tea was held on May 15th and was a huge success! This

year’s theme was A Garden Friendship Tea and the committee brought the theme together with a recep-tion and pink lemonade served in the pool area. Our servers were Daniel Blizzard, Victor De LaCruz, Tom Kelleher, Bob Morley, Vinnie Niland, Ed Schamp, Jim Sheridan and Tom Townsend. They looked spec-tacular with their new vests that were made by our two top sewers, Beverly Sarkisian and Shirley Kelle-her. In addition, Bev and Shirley headed up the sew-ing committee which was responsible for making 20 tablecloths for all the round tables.

M auve and Sage green topiaries graced the tables and new this year were the lace cur-

tains made by Shirley and Beverly. All those in at-tendance brought their own teacups and with the Mauve linen napkins as an added touch the room looked beautiful! There were an abundance of door prizes thanks to the hard work of Marcia Crosby, Dorothy Morley and Agnes Schamp. This year we introduced The Prettiest Hat contest. We incorporated a Parade of Hats and all the con-testants were able to show off their headwear. The winner was Anna Blizzard and she received a beauti-

fully decorated hat with $25.00 in pleated bills in-stead of flowers.

T he menu was superb and delicious and was under the direction of Jackie Headman, and

consisted of: A Mesculin Salad, Croissants filled with Roasted Turkey, Chicken Salad and Seafood Salad. Scrumptious desserts of Petit Fours, Lemon Squares, Éclairs, Fruit Kabobs and a decorated Tea Cookie topped off the meal. A sampling of Black Tea, several Fruit Teas and the ever so decadent Vanilla Truffle Tea complimented the entire meal!

T he Ladies Tea is truly a remarkable event to work on. The entire committee is a joy to

work with starting with Phyllis Roche who was our reservationist, Linda Townsend who compiled the beautiful keepsake booklet, to the rest of the commit-tee….Jan Barr, Jacquie Bridge, Marcia Crosby, Bar-bara Fody, Paula Giordano, Jackie Headman, Arlene Hernandez, Shirley Kelleher, Marge McMakin, Doro-thy Morley, Margaret Niland, Lori Roman, Peggy Sage, Beverly Sarkisian, Agnes Schamp, and Linda Townsend. A special thanks to all who came to help with the massive sewing project. I can say it was a joy to work with all of you and you can all be proud of the outcome.

W e recently came back from an amazing trip to Italy, after spending a few days in Rome and then a week at the Villa Gi-

uncheto in Tuscany. Bill and I were fortunate to be there with my daughter, son-in-law, his parents and our two beautiful granddaughters. What struck me as so incredible was the archi-tecture. I continue to ask myself, how was it possi-ble to build such elaborate structures that have en-dured seven to eight hundred years, much less a perfectly symmetrical building like the Pantheon, which was built almost 2,000 years ago? The stat-

ues, cathedrals, towers and public buildings; every-where you looked there was another amazing edi-fice. We made sure to throw a coin over our shoul-ders in the Trevi Fountain as it will ensure we return to Rome again some day. The villa in Tuscany was originally a 13th century monastery, which is that of a square built around an enclosed courtyard. The design allows more sunlight as well as cross ventilation. On another note, we enjoyed the food and wine as well which is why I’ve been back at the gym.

It ’s been quite a few years since I have taken a ‘real’ vaca-

tion. When I say ‘real’ I mean a va-cation where you kick off your shoes and focus on nothing but relaxing. I mean the kind of vacation where we pack our clothes and get on a plane or in a car and head off for new and exciting places. This does not deter me however from taking ’mini’ vaca-tions which consist of revisiting places that have left indelible memo-ries etched in my mind. Whenever I need a break I can call upon these memories and revisit places that I have been and savor the moments all over again. Sometimes I go to the island of Bimini. It is a small island off the coast of Florida and it was the first time that I had been to a beach

other than the Jersey Shore. I was all of 18 years old. I can still see the colors and transparency of the water and feel the warm sand beneath my feet. I can taste the conch that was served with every meal and feel the warm tropical breeze on my face. I can watch the sea planes fly in and enjoy being lulled to sleep on the boat that had transported me to this island paradise. If it gets too hot for me in the Bahamas my mind takes me north to Maine. There I take a ride up Cadil-lac mountain with my husband Den-nis , my son Joe and his friend Matt. I can picture the rocky coastline and the many small islands that surround it. We stand on that peak and soak up the splendor that characterizes the coastline of Maine. I can lay on the grass with my son and gaze up

at the night sky. There are so many stars in the heavens that our eyes cannot focus on them or our minds comprehend the vastness of the uni-verse. I see the tree where Joe and Matt carved their initials after they climbed to the top of a mountain. We walk on Sand Beach which is a beautiful sandy beach nestled among the cliffs and rocks of Acadia Na-tional Park and is as beautiful as any beach I have ever visited. The best part about vacations is that when we come home we bring a suitcase of memories with us. So if time or money don’t allow for a vaca-tion right now, I just unpack my memories and take a mini vaca-tion…....if only in my mind! Happy Traveling!

O ver 150 people gath-ered on Memorial Day at the amenity center

to remember those who have served in the military. *Many enjoyed a BBQ ca-tered by The Pig-Out Res-taurant and others brought their own picnic baskets. It was a beautiful day that enhanced the fun and goodwill that was generated. The important part of the day was a Dedication to those who have served and those presently serving in Iraq, Afghanistan and other parts of the world. A prayer of thanks was said for what we have here at Sandpiper Bay and for those presently serving in harms way and are protecting the freedom that we sometimes take for granted. This was followed up by a poem written by a Marine serving in Vietnam to his Dad. A roll call of military personnel with ties to the resi-dents of Sandpiper was read naming those who gave the ultimate sacrifice, those who served during various con-flicts as well as other veterans. This was followed by the singing of God Bless America and the ascension of 90 balloons bearing the names of those remembered. It was a day in which Sandpiper celebrated the real mean-ing of Memorial Day.

On Thursday, June 19, the ladies luncheon was held at Betty’s Uptown Restaurant

on Main Street in Shallotte hosted by Carol Kost, Lori Roman, Barbara Fody, and Margie Law-rence. Approximately 60 women attended the luncheon and enjoyed entrees which included crab cakes, salads, fish and chicken .

I live on the Piper 2 fairway, and occa-sionally I will walk in the early evening hours. Most of the time I do this when I

am dog-sitting, but I should do it more often for this ye-ole body! I walk across the fairway onto the cart path and I get tangled up amongst the pine trees and woods-like surroundings. I walk across this area onto the cart path of the Piper 7th fair-way and I enjoy standing there. It is totally quiet. I look around and up at the sky and in the far distance you can watch the sun setting or the sky with fast moving clouds. I feel like I am the only one around and the serenity and peacefulness is unreal. The feeling makes you appreciate life and the beautiful surroundings close to home. Ahhhh, the serenity – what a good feeling.
