Preston is the championof the 2008 Inter-Hallfemale volleyball

competition. With a mitureof outstanding talent, eperience and aggression, the ladies of the A.Z.Preston Hall made the rst

distinguishing mark inthe sporting area for theacademic year.

Led by Captain Lyn-MarieDean and strengthened bythe likes of Simone Forbesand Keesha RockstarRobinson, the potent Prestonunit was clearly a step abovethe other Halls of residenceand commandingly took thetrophy with a clean sweep of thetournament.

Captain Lyn-Marie Dean believes that the title couldnot have been won without the

    fostering of good relationships

among the team members. Shesaid that the girls brought theiroff court friendships on to thecourt which enhanced teamworkand cooperation. The girls havebeen training since the beginningof the semester and have shownthe discipline and eecution of atrue champion side.

This victory seems to be the

catalyst for a new-look sports-oriented Preston Hall and allother disciplines can take notesfrom the victorious femalevolleyball team.

Shark Waves wishes to etenda whole-hearted congratulationto the 2008 Inter-Hall femalevolley ball champion, Aston

Who ever said Prestoncouldnt have the ultimatewater party, would have

eaten their words if they hadattended our second annual Mask-A-Raid fete on October 24. For,with one foam pit and three personsarmed with water hoses, the sharksonce again showed that they were aforce to be reckoned with.

The theme for this years partywas entitled Four Corners of theWorld, where various patronsrepresented USAs Mardi Gras,Brazilian Carnival, African Tribaland European by wearing differentcostumes to depict the themes.

The party opened its gatesaround 10 p.m. and by 11 p.m.,the foam pit was a big hit. Whodidnt care to get wet, stood onthe sidelines until the hose menrealised the plan and soon spoiledthe plot to stay dry.

Most men stood up to the Mardi

Gras tradition and donned beads, while women came out in seyswimwear and masks. Decorationsand lights added to the carnival

    atmosphere.So with the ashy decorations,

sexy costumes and liquor owing(of course) people did their nuhlingas, sweeps and gully creepasto the musical stylings of RichieRas, Zip Jock Ice and DJ Nariti.Special selections, includingFallen Soldier and others, went out to Andy Lopez andthe others who died, to showthat although they were gone,

they were not forgotten.Deputy CEAC Steffan-

Chad Haughton said theevent was very successful asover 600 patrons came out tosupport.

Mask-A-Raid has cementeditself as a signicant event onthe calendar, he said.

Adding that the eventmade some money, CEACRyan Esson said the fundswould be given to the hallscharity initiatives. Thanksgoes out to the sponsors:

My feelings bloomed for youLike a ower in springLike a piece of artIts a beautiful thing.

I cant be without youOr maybe just without anyoneI think about you all the timeBut why do I have this feeling?

Is this love or merely lust?

This was the timeWhen I thought yo u were for me.

I saw no aws in my choice;I guess I d idnt see.

I cant belie ve I never saw it.What had blinded me?Everyone knew this would happenHow come I couldnt see?

What am I to do now?Now that I can seeWith this knitted browThat you are not for me.

My eyes will not see what the y longedto seeMy lips will not kiss who they longed

to kissWhy does life h ave to be mean to me?Full of hatred and pain instead of joyand bliss

I dont really wan t to leaveI dont really wan t to say good byeBut this is what I have to doTo let my feel ings for you di e.

So Ill just say goodbyeAnd Ill bid you adoIt is hard for me to leave

Henry from Porto Santo. The Mr. and Miss Prestoncompetition captures the beauty, talent and intelligence of membersof the Preston family.

The reigning Mr. and MissPreston, Odain SpectatorMurray and Nekeisha ResilientLewis, have done well asambassadors of the Hall. Theyhave both achieved a lot duringtheir year. Murray is now the HallCommittee secretary and Lewisis admired for her commitmentand dedication to the Hall.

    Lewis is advising this years

contestants to build on theefforts being made to cement intothe minds of the wider campus

the enviable legacy of A. Z.Preston.

According to her, a mostnoteworthy attribute of PrestonHall is how conductive itsenvironment is to the holisticdevelopment of its residents. Asa consequence, the Hall is ableto produce remarkably talentedand skilled individuals.

The incoming king andqueen need not measurethemselves against others beforethem but establish their owngoals and in everything they do,ensure not to lose their sense ofself, Lewis further advises.

This years contestantswill leave with a wide rangeof prizes including, trophies, medals, certicates as well assurprise prizes.

The First-Year Experience isan experience of a lifetime. This is one of the most

enlightening experiences that arst year will have throughouthis/her entire universitylife. It has been described bysome persons interviewed asinteresting and fun.

An Olympian said thatinitially she thought

the programme would beuninteresting and boring. However, when she went to

the rst session, she said it was surprisingly hype. Shenow looks forward to theinteresting sessions and thedrama presentations that aregiven during these sessions.

An interesting aspect to these presentations is the television productions and the discussions that follow.Instead of a boring and dulllecture, we are invited to assesssituations that are portrayed

to us using real-life people andcircumstances. The presenters

then engage us in livelydiscussions that sometimesspark heated debates between

males and females. We would debate about

who is at fault if a romanticrelationship goes bad, or whois to blame if a girl is beingabused, or the steps that canbe taken to help people whond themselves in difcultsituations. These debates helpus as rst-year students tosee all the perspectives in asituation. They also help us

to analyse events and thinkrationally so that if we have

to make certain decisions oncampus we can make informedand not naive choices.

At rst gl ance the p rogrammecan be said to be preparing usfor the university experienceby allowi ng us to expe rience

without experience. However,as one interviewee said, it

doesnt just prepare us for theUWI but it prepares us fora life outside of home. Oneperson even said that apartfrom Orientation this is one of

the best programmes that havebeen prepared for the Fresherson Hall. He highlighted that it

teaches responsible living in allareas of our lives.

With the recent outbreakof pink-eye(conjunctivitis) across

the island and more specicallyon campus, it important that we become more informed aboutthe condition so that necessaryprecautions can be taken.

Conjunctivitis is an infection orinammation of the conjunctiva, the thin transparent membranethat covers the white part of theeye and the inner surface of theeyelids. Though the conditioncan be alarming due to the rateat which it spreads and the etentto which it can cause the eyes tobecome red, it causes no long-termdamage to the eyes or vision.

Pink eye can be caused by: viruses bacteria Allergies (including smoke,

pollen, chlorine in swimming pools, cosmetics ingredients as

well as other products that comein contact with the eye)

    a chemical splash

a foreign object in the eyeViral and bacterial conjunctivit is

are the only contagious forms.According to the Director of

Health Promotion and Protectionin the Ministry of Health, Dr EvaLewis-Fuller, the current outbreak

of pink eye is of viral origin. Thefocus will therefore be on viralconjunctivitis.

Viral conjunctivitis is associatedwith the viruses that cause thecommon cold, sore throat andupper respiratory tract infection.
