Radio Mathematics - Objectives

• To enhance the interest of students of Higher Primary Schools of the tribal and rural areas of H D Kote taluk in mathematics.

• To create a platform to bring together teachers, professors and researchers to share, discuss and adopt innovative ideas to enhance the quality of learning of mathematics.

• Broadcast started on 1st November 2014 and completed 90 episodes on 29th April 2015

• Broadcast schedule• Every Monday, Wednesday, Friday• Alternate Sunday

• All script writers and performing artists are from the local community – Scripts are vetted by experts

• Circular from Block Education Officer to all Government schools regarding the program

• Narrowcast in 14 Government Higher Primary Schools and shared with 5 tribal residential schools• Written quiz programs conducted in schools• Regular feedback collected from the teachers and

students• Script writers themselves conduct the narrowcast

• Child artists identified from the individual schools and a workshop was conducted for all of them – One of our child artist is selected for AIR Mysore programs

• Question Boxes were installed in 43 schools – more to be added along with Question Cards

• Team interaction with Mr. Aamod Karkhanis, Navanirmithi and feedback on the program was a part of his report –

The program is quite popular and students are able to recollect many maths concepts discussed in different episodes. This is a very good initiative and will go a long way in making maths appear less formidable. The program is trying to involve students in participating and in writing scripts.

• The script writers also attended a Science Writers’ Workshop in Bangalore – this was an exposure for all of them and also an opportunity to get critical feedback on the scripts

• VITM Mobile Museum and hands-on sessions conducted in the taluk for over 40 days – couldn’t reach all students

• Teachers’ Forum created called Vijnana Vedike Kote

• Supply of radio sets to residential tribal schools and other schools in need

• Efforts are being made to bring in variety in to the program• A local artist recorded a harikathe• TLM kit and handbook is being prepared• Maths games are being introduced in schools• Workshops on maths concepts and preparation

of maths models conducted for teachers• Pi day to be celebrated in all schools – organized

by the teachers’ forum• Live phone-in programs with teachers have been

scheduled

• Education department officials are interested and supportive of the program

• All students are able to relate to the characters and understand the context of the programs

• In-service teachers themselves has several challenges in teaching – the lack of conceptual clarity among them is one of the most common challenges

• Contextualization to local events and humor attracts the students to the program

• Programs have also been attractive for elders with no background of mathematics

• The reach of the radio station is limited and can’t cover all the schools of the block

• In between the schedule of exams and the rush to complete the syllabus of other subjects, radio maths got 2nd priority in schools

• As we venture in algebra and geometry, the script writers are finding it challenging to deliver a concept in the duration and in the local language
