Medieval knights. Futuristic Storm-troopers. Scary creatures from the Nether-world. And, of course, scouts, pageant queens, and area performers – all are expected to march in the annual parade that will kick off Suwanee’s first two-day com-munity festival. The Suwanee Fest parade will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday, September 20, heading up Main Street from Stonecypher Road and down Buford Highway, ending at Town Center Park. This year’s parade theme is “Red, White & You.” At the head of the parade will be grand marshals former U.S. Army Capt. Luis Carlos Montalván and his beloved service dog, Tuesday. In cooperation with the Gwinnett County Public Library, Montalván and Tuesday will also appear onstage at Town Center Park following the parade, at 11:20 a.m., for a presentation and

“meet the author” event. The recipient of two Bronze Stars and the Purple Heart among numerous other awards, Montalván is the author of New York Times bestseller Until Tuesday: A Wounded Warrior and the Golden Retriever Who Saved Him. Published in 2011, the book describes the bond between Tuesday and Montalván, who suffered physical and psychological wounds following two tours of duty in Iraq. Earlier this year, Montalván’s first children’s book, Tuesday Tucks Me In: The Loyal Bond Between a Soldier and His Service Dog, was published. Cash prizes will be awarded to parade participants who are judged to be the best in a variety of categories, including best of show, most entertaining, most creative, and best use of theme.

Glassy improvisationby Simi Shah

Jeff Loose has come to appreciate improvisation – not in theater, as you might

expect, but in glasswork. In 2003, after acquiring his degree in sculpture design from the University of Georgia, Loose began pur-suing his childhood interest in glass. He has worked on several commissioned proj-ects related to conservation and restoration for churches, businesses, and residences. Suwanee Fest offers an opportunity for him to show people his smaller, more accessible glass creations. He looks forward to sharing his company’s research and development in glasswork. Much of his artwork, espe-cially stained glass, involves time-intensive, structured processes. But it’s the abstract aspect of his art and the sur-prise that comes from embracing improvisation that really appeal to Loose. The best art, often inspired by ele-ments in nature, says Loose, is

not a perfectly executed pro-cess, but rather an opportu-nity to discover. Through his Studioglass firm, Loose explores a wide-range of styles, from tradi-tional techniques used dur-ing the medieval era to working with contemporary styles. “You don’t look for your style in painting num-ber one,” he says. “After 100 paintings, you will find your style. What’s really important is to always be making art.” Loose has done just that as he returns to Suwanee’s com-munity festival for a second year. Have you ever thought of

dominos or scrabble tiles as jewelry? What about spoons as a pendant? Lawrenceville artist Kimberly Kelley has and makes memorable piec-es of jewelry out of everyday recyclable items found around the house. When she was a child, Kel-ley’s grandmother would pro-vide recycled items for arts and craft projects. Fine-tuning her artistic interest required some trial and error; Kelley tried sewing, painting, and other crafts, but creating jewelry seemed her perfect match. Her jewelry-making business, Gorilla Dust Designs, is now eight years strong.

An administrator with the Centers for Disease Con-trol, Kelley squeezes in her soul-feeding jewelry-making during evenings and week-ends. Each design usually takes about two to three days to make from start to finish. Reflecting on her work, Kel-ley says that her jewelry design has definitely changed over the years; her pieces are far more intricate and varied than they used to be. When it comes to seeking inspiration for her jewelry pieces, Kelley says: “You have to try new objects and shapes and just see what fits.” Her most popular item is the scrabble tile pendant, which features a letter and unique artwork and designs. Ranging from $5-$20, her jewelry is very much adored and oftentimes described as “never seen before” by her

The 2014 festival marks Kelley’s third year participat-ing in Suwanee’s “celebration of community.” “Suwanee Fest is fun,” she says. ”There are a lot of peo-ple, and you get direct feed-back from your customers.”

Whirlibobsby Simi Shah

Bob Sanchez has always been handy with model radio-controlled airplanes, so he decided to put his hand to the test with other wood-working projects. And after an extensive career as a car salesman, he “retired” to the world of art. Over the years, Sanchez has created a broad spec-

trum of wooden items, from outdoor décor to children’s toys. He spends a great deal of time focusing on the intri-cacies of each piece with the mindset that “there is always something to learn.” As he has no formal train-ing in woodworking, San-chez describes his art as a constant learning process. He practices lots of patience, always stopping and rethink-ing. His woodworking is a time-consuming, elaborate

process that involves break-ing up palette wood, cutting, drilling, and assembling his pieces. Nonetheless, he loves seeing the joy on kids’ faces when they pick up one of his toys, describing himself as a “big old kid.” For him, the hardest part is the attach-ment he develops to his long-term projects. Sanchez’s handmade toys include toolboxes, cars, trucks, and trailers with adopt-a-pet and pet rescue themes. Additionally, he constructs outdoor décor, such as whirligigs, usually made from palette wood. Suwanee Fest is Sanchez’s initial exposure to a large community. He hopes the festival will steer him in the right direction artistically. His items range from $6 to $100. Sanchez loves the peo-ple factor of his art business as much as he enjoys creat-

ing his work, so be sure to visit his booth and check out his work.

Dior, Valentino, Alex-ander McQueen, and Ver-sace may be among the biggest names in haute couture for Hollywood’s elite, but for the best-dressed canines in North Georgia the designer

name being barked about is Burris, Myrtle Burris. Buford resident Myrtle Burris, who retired from a government position in 2001, is the owner of Stuffy Shirt Dog, which sells clothing, caps, and other accessories for the furry, four-legged set. Sewing since she was 12 years old, Burris was busy creating Christmas stockings one holiday season several years ago when a neighbor asked her if she could make one for her chihuahua. Wanting to try something new, Bur-ris went for it. Like any fashion design-er, Burris finds the hardest part of her job is staying current and creating new designs that her customers will like. Her most popular items are doggy dresses, vests, and sun visors, all of

which are personalized for each dog. A few of Burris’s most creative and fun ventures are her “tutu dresses.” Bur-ris’s dresses go way beyond the frou-frou tutu around the hips; her outfits come with matching tops, tutus, and even legwarmers for the winter. Other products include baseball caps and sun visors with a favored team’s logo on the front and a favorite player’s jersey number on the back. Most of Burris’s just-for-dogs products range from $1 to $20 and feature a vari-ety of styles and haute fash-ions. Some of her most eye-catching and adorable products will be exhibited at Suwanee Fest. “I enjoy sewing for dogs, I really do,” she says. “People are really hard to please.”

A1A’s free Suwanee Fest performance will begin at 6 p.m. Saturday,

September 20, on the Town Center stage. Before forming A1A in 1991, Jeff Pike had developed an enormous following in the Atlanta area as his one-man first-of-its-kind tribute to Jimmy Buffett. Today A1A continues to put on a highly energetic, colorful, and family-friendly Parrot Head Extravaganza Jimmy Buffett Tribute Show. The band boasts on its website that it is “the first and only tribute show ever sanctioned by Jimmy Buffett himself.” The band has released several all-original CDs,

and many of those “trop rock” songs are now part of the A1A live show as are classic reggae tunes as well as, of course, favorite tunes from Jimmy Buffett’s long career. A1A’s Suwanee Fest concert is free and open to the public. No alcohol may be brought into Town Center Park, but beer and wine may be purchased throughout the festival from licensed Town Center merchants.

reading from their widely acclaimed children’s book, Tuesday Tucks Me In: The Loyal Bond between a Soldier and His Service Dog. Published in May, Tuesday Tucks Me In has been selected by Amazon.com as the “Best Nonfiction Children’s Book of 2014” (to date).

Montalván and Tuesday, who also are serving as parade grand marshals, are appearing at Suwanee Fest in partnership with the Gwinnett County Public Library. The two are co-featured in an independent film documentary, Buried Above Ground, which will be released later this year. Montalván is also the author of Until Tuesday, A Wounded Warrior and the Golden Retriever Who Saved Him, which was published in 2011. Montalván served 17 years in the U.S. Army, including tours of duty in Iraq where he earned two Bronze Stars, the Purple Heart, Army Commendation Medal for Valor, and the Combat Action Badge. Wounded in action, the Army vet sustained traumatic

brain and spinal cord injuries in Iraq in 2003. Following Montalván’s presentation, festival-goers can meet the author and Tuesday, purchase books, and get them signed at the Gwinnett County Public Library booth.

All Stars Performing ArtsSaturday, noon

Voted Best of Gwinnett 2013 for Best Artistic/Cultural Scene, All Stars Performing Arts Academy, in Sugar Hill, trains and encourages students to evolve as dancers, actors,

and musicians. The academy was named Best of Show in the 2013 Suwanee Day parade and Most Entertaining in the 2012 parade. All Stars students have performed at several area festivals and events, including the NCAA Basketball Finals halftime show at the Gwinnett Arena and National Geographic Convention at the Cobb Galleria.

The North Gwinnett Arts Association will once again host a Suwanee Plein Air event this fall. Artists from near and far are invited to par-ticipate and paint scenes of Suwanee “in the open air” on Saturday and Sunday, October 18 and 19. Sign up online at suwaneepleinair.com. The entry fee is $35 for North Gwinnett Arts Asso-ciation members and $40 for non-members. Cash prizes will be awarded for first, second, and third place in artists’ choice and people’s choice categories. “Artists will use their personalized styles in pursuit of the common goal of capturing scenes of Suwanee as quickly as possible before the movement of the sun and clouds alter the light-ing and colors of the view,” says NGAA on the Suwanee Plein Air website. “Visitors are invited to watch the artists at work.”

Take the Bus Want to avoid traffic congestion and make your Suwanee Fest experience hassle-free? It’s easy. Plan to park at one of three convenient off-site parking lots and take the free shuttle to and from Town Center Park. The shuttle buses will run from 9 am - 8 pm Saturday and noon - 7 pm Sunday. Please note that bus service will be very limited during the parade on Saturday, from approximately 9:30-11:30 a.m.

There’s always a big crowd when the City of Suwanee throws a party, and you know that everyone who attends has a great time! That’s one reason 12Stone® Church has been proud to be a Suwanee Day/Suwanee Fest sponsor for the past four years, says Senior Pastor Kevin Myers. “We love being a part of Gwinnett County and the family fun this festival delivers each year,” he says. You may have noticed the ONE Matters window clings on cars around Gwinnett and Hall counties. It’s all a part of 12Stone’s message that one person matters. In fact, making room for one more person and one more family is why 12Stone is opening five additional campuses in January 2015. “One person matters to God and to us. We know from years of ministry the powerful impact of one act of kind-

ness, one family restored, and one changed life,” says Myers. With campuses currently in Law-renceville, Hamilton Mill, Flowery Branch, and Sugarloaf, 12Stone Church serves close to 17,000 people each weekend. That number might sound like a lot until you consider that almost 280,000* people in Gwinnett and surrounding counties have no affiliation with any faith tra-dition. 12Stone’s new locations in Buford, Snellville, Braselton, Bethle-hem, and Loganville will open thou-sands more seats. The congregation whole-hearted-ly supports this expanding vision as more than 1,000 12Stoners have signed on to “pioneer “ these new loca-tions, which will open in temporary facilities. “We were blown away by the success of the Sugarloaf Campus that

started in Peachtree Ridge High School and realized it was a way we could expand our reach in serving the community before building a campus,” says Chief Financial Officer Norwood Davis. In addition to offering biblical teaching, energetic worship, and inno-vative children’s and student programs, 12Stone is known for being a force for good in the community. 12Stone sup-ports several local compassion part-ners, including Rainbow Village, Hope Clinic, Salvation Army, and local food cooperatives. As a part of its expansion, the church is partnering with Habitat for Humanity to build several homes in new 12Stone territories. In the past, 12Stone has joined forces with local schools, food distributors, and the Gwinnett Braves to provide meals for

thousands of families during the Christmas holiday season. “Our goal is to give ourselves away to our commu-nity, and working with local partners allows us to give more and leverage the great systems our partners have in place,” says Shawn Janes, director of local outreach. Approximately 40 artist-painted doors will be on exhibit at Sims Lake Park, 4600 Suwanee Dam Road, throughout October. These doors and others on display at five addi-tional locations throughout Gwin-nett County are part of the 2014 Doors to Homes & Hope exhibit, presented by Gwinnett Habitat for Humanity, Gwinnett ReStore, and ArtWorks! Gwinnett.

This unique exhibit is designed to bring awareness to the issue of homelessness and the universal need for affordable housing. Several Suwanee-area artists are participating in the “painting for a purpose” program, including several with the North Gwinnett Arts Asso-ciation and students in the North Gwinnett High School National Art Honor Society.

The exhibit will open at Sims Lake Park on Saturday, October 4. Habitat for Humanity will host a World Habitat Day ceremony at Town Center Park at noon Mon-day, October 6. The doors will be available for purchase via GwinnettReStore.org. Each door is $100 and may be picked up at the end of the month-long exhibit.

Hot dogs, costumes, fall festi-val games, inflatables, and dancing with Parker are what’s being served up on Saturday, October 25, when the City of Suwanee’s annual Trek or Treat event is held at Suwanee Creek Park, 1170 Buford Highway. Designed especially for elemen-tary schoolchildren and younger, Trek or Treat is scheduled 11 a.m.-1 p.m. A hot dog lunch will be served while supplies last. Suwanee’s final Food Truck Friday of 2014 will be held at Town Center Park on October 3. Come enjoy the music of the Hilaire Band and grab dinner from one of your favorite food trucks. Food truck vendors expected to be on site include The Blaxican, Freckled and Blue, The Fry Guys, Hail Caesar, Mighty Meatballs, A Moveable Feast, Nana G’s Chicken and Waffles, Tex’s Tacos, and WOW!
