SUSTAINABLE TILES - A SPECIFIER’S GUIDE

While the growth in the range and quality of tile products is a clear blessing for specifiers, it comes with provisos. Aesthetic potential is one thing, but as ever, architects and designers need to consider other factors like cost and functionality. And, more now than ever before, they also need to factor in sustainability.

They need to make themselves aware of not just the material used in products but also a range of other variables like the manufacturing processes involved, the by-products of those processes, and the energy they consume. And they have to consider land utilisation and its effect on local environments, carbon offsets, transportation (of raw materials and finished products), and more.

How should specifiers approach this complex task? How can they assess individual products and where can they access the resources to help them do so?

LEARNING OUTCOMES

At the end of this presentation you should be able to:

• Identify the types of tiles available and outline how they are manufactured.

• Outline the range of factors involved in assessing the sustainability of tile products.

• Define the concept of ‘embodied carbon’ and explain how it applies to tiles.

• Identify environmental certifications that you should look out for when choosing products.

• Identify other factors, apart from sustainability, that should be considered when evaluating product quality.

This presentation will deliver outcomes related to the following Competency/s from the National Standard of Competency for Architects:

Design: Project Briefing 1.2, 1.4, 1.5

Design: Conceptual Design 3.3, 3.4, 3.7

Design: Schematic Design 4.2, 4.4, 4.6

SESSION TITLE COMPETENCY/S

Learning outcomes are requirements for formal CPD. Please keep a copy for your records.

• What are the key factors to consider when seeking sustainable materials?

The materials, the manufacturing process and associated waste, the recyclability of products, and embodied carbon.

• Can specifiers assess the sustainability of products based on their ingredients? From that perspective, what are the benefits of porcelain tiles compared to natural stone?

The materials used to manufacture porcelain tiles – such as clay, feldspar and quartz – are abundant and unlikely to be depleted. As such, porcelain tiles are a good alternative to natural stone.

• How can technology help improve the sustainability of tile manufacturing?

Automation improves efficiency and cuts carbon emissions associated with manufacturing; AI warehousing optimizes land utilisation and therefore minimizes footprints of facilities; the use of ddigital print technology makes porcelain tiles a viable alternative to natural stone.

• Beyond manufacturing, what other players and life cycle stages are relevant when assessing the sustainability of tiles?

Life cycle assessment starts with the mining of raw materials, through to manufacturing and installation methods, to recycling of products that are no longer needed. Responsibility lies with those involved at all stages.

• What are the key Environmental Certifications that specifiers should look out for?

Two of the best recognized are the EU’s Ecolabel certification and Green Squared certification from the US. In Australia, GECA and GreenTag both meet the Green Building Council of Australia (GBCA) requirements.
