– 4000+1200 buildings are owned by the municipal City of Zurich.– 80% of the buildings were erected before 1980. – 400 million Swiss francs are invested annually by the City of Zurich.
Introduction
All new city-owned buildings are constructed to meet the 7 mile steps for energy and resource efficiency.

The Letzigrund stadium will be the first Zurich owned construction equipped with a wood pellet heating system. The city’s largest solar power system with 250 kW peak power will be on the roof, supplemented by 100m2 solar collectors, providing pre-warming for hot water.

City Council Program Sustainable City of Zurich – on the Way to the 2000-Watt-Society
– The 2000-Watt-society is a vision: everybody in the world will be able to use the same amount of energy
– High quality of life and high living standard for today‘s and future generations
– A policy for the environment to reduce energy consumption and global warming in a long-term perspective (at least to 2050)

Buildings for the 2000-Watt-Society
In the four aspects: Energy, Building Materials, Electricity andMobility, increased efficiency must be achieved in building concepts. The MINERGIE standard is not good enough!
Energy Materials Electricity Mobility

Experiences and Examples
Energy, Minergie-P for new buildingsMaterial 100 MJ/m2a embodied energy
(SIA energy-efficiency-path)
Energy & Material Efficiency is already predetermined in the competition project
Electricity Very good products are notalways available. There is a need for innovation.
Mobility This issue is rarely addressedbut has a big impact.

Energy and Material Efficiency:Predetermined in the Architectural Competition!
Architects and Planners should be able to actively improve their architectural projects during anarchitectural competition.
We need a better understanding of the main factorswhich influence the energy consumption in a building.
Competition-Calculation (WW-Kalkulation), using the same input data for estimates of
• costs• embodied energy• operating energy

The project will meet the MINERGIE-P-ECO standard.
The amount of embodied energy is actively reduced and calculated several times during the planning process.
Old Peoples Home "Trotte"
compactness:best volume/surface-ratio
well positioned windows for optimised solar gains
favourable construction and material choices

New Patients Building of City Hospital "Triemli"
The project will meet the MINERGIE-P standard
Renewable energy sources(geothermic or wood) will be used. The CO2 reduction amounts to 80%.
It will be completed in 2013.
compactness:best volume/surface-ratio
most flexible room organisation
favourable technical installation concept with system separation

Mobility7
Housing Development "Sihlbogen"Building Cooperative Zurlinden
In the housing development "Sihlbogen" there are fewer cars than people. This meant that the number of parking spaces could be reduced
Instead of cross-subsidising by simply reducing the monthly rent, the tenants receive an annual ticket for all public transport facilties in and around Zurich.
The railway station is located inside the settlement.
