NASA JSC was recently recognized at the City of
Houston’s Clean Air Champion Awards luncheon for
our commitment to support voluntary measures
reducing air pollution and promoting regional air
quality initiatives.
Kirk Hummel is our JSC Outdoor Air Quality
Environmental Specialist. Not only does Kirk keep us
aligned with the City, County, State, and Federal
regulations, he is also the Air Lead for our JSC
Sustainability program. Help Kirk help everyone by
pledging to walk, ride your bicycle, carpool, or use
public transportation just once a week. That will reduce
our overall Greenhouse Gas emissions.

SUSTAINABILITY OPPORTUNITIES OCT 2015
America Recycles day is officially Nov 14th, however, there are activities that
support recycling all throughout the year. JSC’s Environmental Office &
Straughan employees are hosting a booth at the Oct 10th JSC Safety, Health,
and Environment Fair. Come out to take the pledge, recycle, reutilize, and
repurpose existing materials (from t-shirts to towels). When you see Alex
(pictured to the left), you know you’re in the right place.
In early and mid-November, your JSC Green team will finalize arrangements to
tour the Waste Management single-streamed recycled facility. Details will be
sent to the JSC Sustainability List Serve. Join here if you’re not on it already!
America Recycles Day and Keep Houston Beautiful have a long list of activities
to participate in around our area. Our JSC Center Sustainability Officer (CSO),
Joel Walker, will receive by Keep Houston Beautiful at the 31st Annual Mayor’s
Proud Partners luncheon for our efforts in helping make the planet a better
place.

HOW CAN I BE
MORE SUSTAINABLE?
Calculate your ecological footprint! How many
Earth’s does it take to sustain your lifestyle if everyone in the world lived like you?
“My goal as the JSC Center Operations
Director is to create a working environment
where JSC employees feel happy,
comfortable, and productive to support our
mission. Similarly, my vision for sustainability is
that it’s something we don’t even think about;
it’s ingrained in our thinking. We just do it.”
Joel Walker, JSC Center Sustainability Officer
