The Art of Susan GoldsmithBy Drew Klausner

For over three decades Susan Goldsmith created lush gestural paintings that referenced photos she’d taken of trees, flowers, and animals. Most were loosely painted using her fingers. Mark making and abstracting nature were her central concerns.

Nine years ago Goldsmith embarked on a new path. She began using gold and silver leaf to create grid-like patterns for her backgrounds, which she worked on with oils and metallic/interference paints. After several years she began to incorporate oil pastels, pigment prints, mica powders, and resin layers. The paintings illustrated here are the latest results of her undertakings using these materials and new techniques.

Nature remains Goldsmith’s subject matter, and photographs still give struc-ture to her compositions. However, her new mixed-media paintings are more complicated because her attention has shifted to an exploration of various types of relationships, in this case dualities: Manmade/Organic, Foreground/Background, Transparency/Opacity, and Perspective/Time shifts. Goldsmith’s recent pursuits have led to the creation of paintings that offer viewers both a transmuting complexity and an elegant simplicity.

Goldsmith has had a lifelong fascination with objects that sparkle, some-thing you might expect from a jeweler’s daughter. Mica particles twinkling on city sidewalks and refracting dewdrops on flowers are as magical to her as are the glimmer of diamonds and pearls. Through her accomplished han-dling of reflective materials, translucent paint, digital printing, and multiple layers of resin, Goldsmith achieves a similar alchemy in her new paintings.
