1. About our country-back to basics 1.1. Bosnia and Herzegovina (BIH) is located in Southeastern Europe. Its total land area is 51,129 sq km. The total length of the land boundaries is 1,459 km, and that of the coastline, 20 km. Adjacent countries are Croatia (932 km) ,Serbia (527km) and Montenegro (527 km). The lowest elevation point is the Adriatic Sea (0 m), the highest Maglic (2,386 m) (CIA, 2001).

Bosnia and Herzegovina became an independent state in 1992 and immediately afterwards entered into a 3.5 years-long war. The war was ended in the winter of 1995 by the Dayton Peace Agreement, of which Annex 4 represents the Constitution of Bosnia and Herzegovina. According to the Constitution (1995), Bosnia and Herzegovina is composed of two Entities: the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina (FBIH) and Republika Srpska (RS). The Federation consists of ten cantons, which in turn consist of municipalities. Each canton has its own constitution and government. Republika Srpska has no cantons, only municipalities.

Total area (sq km): 51,209 Population The population of Bosnia and Herzegovina was estimated at 4,498,976 in 2006. The main ethnic groups are Bosniak (Muslim), Serb and Croat.

Shops: Alimentary shops are opened daily from 06.00 a.m. to 09.00 p.m. including Saturdays, while on Sundays they are opened from 08.00 a.m. to 02.00 p.m. Everywhere, there are stores open 24 hours a day. Markets are opened every day from 06.00 a.m. to 05.00 p.m. Medical care: Bosnia and Herzegovina has no legal requirements for vaccinations. To find a pharmacy, ask for 'apoteka'. In major centers, there are many of them, and there is usually at least one that is open 24 hours a day.

Phone booths you will find them at the bus stations and post offices are pretty cheap. The phones do not accept coins. 10 KM and 20 KM cards can be bought from the post office or at the small newspaper kiosks. Beware: different phone companies provide their services in different parts of the country and your phone cards may not be valid once you leave the town you bought them in. In all cases, it is cheaper to phone after 19.00. IMPORTANT PHONES IN SARAJEVO Food The cuisine of Bosnia and Herzegovina is influenced by its Balkan neighbours. Traditional food includes bread, soups, stews, kebabs, cevapcici (minced meat sausages), stuffed leaves (dolma and sarma) and stuffed peppers. Pie, for example, meat, cheese and spinach is a favourite dish. Side dishes, such as sour cabbage, tomato and onion salad and yoghurt, are often served. Desserts eaten are fruit, pancakes, cakes and pastries. Coffee is preferred strong with sugar. Wine and beer is produced locally.

1.2. And the metropola,capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina,where you will come,Sarajevo! Sarajevo is capital city of (the state of) Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is its administrative, economic, cultural, educational (university) and sport center. The city of Sarajevo is unit of local self-governance, which consists of four city municipalities: Old City, Center, New City and New Sarajevo.Sarajevo is a city in which even strangers can feel at home. Neither geographically expansive nor characterised by large buildings, the city retains a particular, arresting charm with its abundance of busy caf's and abiding tradition of hospitality.

The city's breathtaking backdrop of seemingly endless hills and towering mountains have in a sense always isolated the city, creating a timeless world, which despite its seclusion has always kept its doors open to the rest of the world. Although Sarajevo is a capital city typified by the hustle and bustle of everyday life, it also possesses a unique ambience that seeps into the soul.

This city epitomizes a partial centuries-old struggle against outside influences combined with the absorption of these influences into one of the most diverse cultures in Europe. Indeed, few places on earth feature an Orthodox and a Catholic church, a mosque and a synagogue within easy walking distance of each other. If there were any city in Europe that effortlessly straddles east and west, it is Sarajevo. Here the Byzantine and Ottoman empires of the east and the Roman, Venetian and Austro-Hungarian empires of the west left an indelible mark through culture, traditions and religions.A walk through Sarajevo is a walk through its past. From the oriental Ottoman quarters lined with sweet shops, caf's and handicraft workshops, to the administrative and cultural centre of Austro-Hungarian times, Sarajevo encompasses the very best of both worlds.

* Sarajevo, The Olympic City The 1984 Winter Olympics, officially known as the XIV Olympic Winter Games, were celebrated in Sarajevo in Bosnia and Herzegovina, which at the time was part of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. Other candidate cities were Sapporo, Japan; and Falun/Gothenburg, Sweden. It was the first Winter Games held in Eastern Europe and second for all Olympics. (The first was the 1980 Summer Olympics held in Moscow.) Official mascot of The 1984 Winter Olympics was Vuko, the little wolf.

2.3. by car In case you wish to travel by car we can provide you with various information, just specify where you plan to enter Serbia. We can give you useful navigation tips. When you get to Belgrade you can choose either to travel fast by motorway and pay or travel the alternative time comsuming way but without paying. Petrol stations are usually on every 15 km and the liter of petrol costs app. 1 euro! (Recommended) Our main telecomunication provider, here in BiH has an offer during the season in summer called ULTRA holiday package for your mobile phone so you can reach and be reached by who ever you want. The package costs 12.90KM with 5.00KM included money you can spend from original package and you can also buy additons after or if you spend that first-come money you get with the package. The package and the additions (10,20,50 KM) you can buy on any kiosk or news-stand, post-office and 24/7 drugstores.
