Surah Al Muminoon
Surah Al Muminoon is a Makki Surah revealed before Hijra of the Prophet SAW. There are several section in the surah. We are studying the second story in Surah Muminoon, which is about Prophet Saleh A.S. who was sent as a messenger to the people of Thamud.
Prophet Saleh brought the same message as Prophet Nuh i.e.
! Worship Allah
! ال االهھ ااال هللا ! Have taqwa
Today we continue the story of Prophet Saleh A.S.
Surah Al Muminoon, Class 15

SECTION V: STORY OF PROPHET SALEH (AYAH 31-‐41)
Ayah 33
“And the eminent among his people who disbelieved and denied the meeting of the Hereafter while We had given them luxury in the worldly life said, "This is not but a man like yourselves. He eats of that from which you eat and drinks of what you drink.
,means ووقالل ٱٱلمأل من قومهھ “ And the chiefs of his people who disbelieved”
,means ٱٱلمأل “ Chief”, “someone having honor and position”. This refers to the elite or the leaders of the people of Saleh. They are ‘full’ in their status, for this reason they speak on behalf of the people and they have an influence on them.
من قومهھ means, “ from his people” This refers for the people of Saleh i.e. Thamud.
Surah Al Muminoon, Class 15

بواا ,means ٱٱلذيین كفروواا ووكذ “ And those who disbelieved and denied”
This is the disadvantage of the Chiefs of the people of Saleh.
,means كفروواا “concealing the truth”. This is general type of disbelief.
Truth is :
ال االهھ ااال هللا !! Worship Allah ! Have taqwa
Next the type of disbelief they have is mentioned. They denied the truth
بواا ووكذ means, “ denied”. This is specific disbelief.
They belied the messenger and the message االهھ ااال هللاال
,means بلقآء ٱٱألخرةة “ Meeting in the Hereafter”
This is another truth that the Chiefs of Thamud belied the hereafter.
Surah Al Muminoon, Class 15

,means بلقآء “ with the meeting”, “to meet face to face”
ٱٱألخرةة means, “hereafter”.
The Chiefs of Thamud belied the meeting of hereafter i.e. they disbelieved in the life after death. This is a fact that we will meet the Akhirah. Everyone has an appointment to meet the hereafter. This means for sure we will meet the Akhirah.
Why did they belie the meeting in the hereafter i.e. Day of Judgment?
It was due to their stubbornness and arrogance that the chiefs of Thamud denied the Day of Judgment.
If one person belies one pillar of faith, then he has belied all pillars, so anyone who does not believes in the Day of Judgment is not considered a believer
What is the consequence of someone who disbelieves and denies the Day of Judgment?
نيیا هھم فى ٱٱلحيیوةة ٱٱلد ـ ,means ووأأترفن “ And whom we had given the luxuries and comforts of the life”
هھم ـ ,means ووأأترفن “ living in luxury”
Surah Al Muminoon, Class 15

The Chiefs of Thamud are indulging in the delights and pleasures of the Duniya that made their hearts to harden. We should not put the Duniya in our heart i.e. we should never feel happy or sad for the Duniya. We need to put the Akhirah in your heart. Living in luxury means the goal is only to eat, drink, live in luxury in this Duniya and to compete with each other for this; this makes a person arrogant. Our value is not with material things; the more a person’s concern is the Duniya, the poorer they are to the Duniya. It is not to say that we cannot have luxuries, we have a car, home, etc – these are luxuries, but these things are only a means to the hereafter, they are not a goal. It is dispraised when it becomes a goal. Living in luxury in the Quran is mentioned 8 times in and it is associated with disbelief/ingratitude every time. What makes a person to not think of the hereafter? A person does not think of hereafter when the Duniya is in his heart and it becomes his goal. When the Duniya is in the heart, then it controls our emotions. We fight, get angry, etc. for the Duniya. When Allah gives us a comfortable life, we should be grateful and do more worship. A disbeliever is enjoying for the sake of enjoying, whereas a believer is living in the Duniya for the sake of worshipping Allah. The main reason for all sicknesses of the heart is the love of the Duniya – A person who loves Duniya will be jealous, arrogant, cheat disbelief, reject etc.
What did the chiefs of people of Thamud say?
ثلكم ذآآ إإال بشر م ـ ,means ما هھھھ “He is no more than a human being like you”. It shows the chiefs of Thamud have no respect to the messenger, they are saying “why is he a human being?” So they want something besides a human being – they want an angel. Their heart is so hard that they are misbehaving with Prophet Saleh A.S.
Surah Al Muminoon, Class 15

In the story of Nuh the Chiefs said he is nothing but a human and that that Nuh wants to have a privilege over them. The people of Nuh disbelieved because they took righteous people as intermediaries. What did the people of Saleh say?
ا تشربونن ا تأكلونن منهھ وويیشربب مم ,means يیأكل مم “He eats of that which you eat and drink of what you drink”.
Anyone who has Duniya in his or her heart will speak shallow talk. The people of Saleh disbelieved because their concern is the Duniya.
Surah Al Muminoon, Class 15

What did the people of Saleh say?
Ayah 34
“And if you should obey a man like yourselves, indeed, you would then be losers.” The chiefs of Thamud said to the people “if you follow what Saleh, who is a human like you, is telling you then you will be losers”. However the real loss is to deny the messenger who is telling them the way to guidance.
