Supporting People pays for housing-related supportservices to help people live independently in thecommunity. Housing-related support services areservices that help people get accommodation, or carry on living independently in their own homes.

Support services are bought from all kinds oforganisations, such as housing associations, charities,voluntary organisations, private companies and NewcastleCity Council.

The types of things that housing-related support servicescan help you with are:

• finding somewhere to live and setting up home;• budgeting, managing debts and applying for benefits;• learning domestic, life and social skills;• gaining access to other services and community

groups; and• helping you to contact other organisations like social

services, health services and colleges.

Supporting People can help lots of different people,such as:

• older people who want sheltered housing, or who wanthelp to carry on living in their existing home;

What is Supporting People?• young people who need short-term accommodation

with support, or who need help to keep a tenancy going;• people of all ages with mental-health problems

or dementia;• people with learning disabilities;• people with drug or alcohol problems;• people who are leaving prison;• people and families who are homeless; and • women escaping from domestic violence.

If you have a learning disability and need housing-relatedsupport to help you live in your own home, you cancontact the Learning Disabilities team, which is part of Newcastle Social Services.

You can contact a duty social worker Monday to Friday,between 9.30am and 12 noon and between 2pm and5pm. The team can give you information and advice on social- and health-care services in Newcastle. They may:

• arrange for you to have a community care assessment(this means a social worker from the LearningDisabilities team will talk to you about any help andsupport you might need);

• buy and arrange services that provide help and support;• arrange for a carer’s assessment; and• put you in touch with other organisations who may be

able to help you.

Mental-health services in Newcastle are provided by a partnership between Newcastle City Council,Northumberland, Tyne and Wear NHS Trust and thevoluntary sector. If you think you need supportedhousing, you can speak to:

• your GP;• your consultant psychiatrist; or• another mental-health professional;

who will refer you to the appropriate services.

There is a range of services for people with mental-healthproblems in Newcastle. These include supported housingand other treatment services available throughNewcastle’s mental-health resource centres at ScroggRoad and Summerhill, home-treatment based servicesprovided through the Crisis Assessment and HomeTreatment Service and services provided by Newcastle’sSpecialist Community Mental teams.

To get help from these services, you need to contact yourGP or another mental-health professional who can makea referral for you. You can also contact Newcastle SocialServices on either of the following numbers.
