Exit Guidelines

Students exit ELL for one of the following reasons:

• They have demonstrated proficient/bridging in their English language skills and are meeting expectations/*proficient in academic subjects.

• They have reached 5 years of service and the funding has expired and they are meeting expectations/*proficient in the classroom.

• Their learning profiles demonstrate the need for LSS support and/or they have received 5 or more years of ELL support.

• Their parents have declined ELL support.

• International student is returning to home city.

• Student moves to another school district.

Page 21: Supporting ELLs in Elementary Schools: Year-end Assessment · 2019. 4. 9. · Grade 7 writing assessment (to be photocopied) Writing rubric - Intermediate ... Grade Assessment All

5 Year Cap

• The ministry only funds 5 years of ELL

support, but they track students

requiring more years of support. Include

them on your 1701.

• Burnaby supports Years 6+

• Do not “save” years of service

• Typically, these students need focused,

explicit vocabulary support so that they

can be successful in the intermediate

grades

Reading Assessment

Low prep, highly diagnostic

Procedure:

• Pre-reading: What do you know about _____?

• In partners or small groups, have them fill out the T-

chart: Know/Don’t Know

• Independent reading: Pass out reading passage and

have students read silently

• Post reading: in partners or small groups, continue

filling out the T chart.

• Circulate, taking notes, asking prompting questions or

make comments using academic vocabulary

• Wrap up: share out: what do they know now? Ask

them to use evidence from the text.

• Use the new reading rubric to summarize notes and

observations
