#SuperCoders

Sandra James – Orange Group

pan-European workshopson coding for children

Our participation in EU Coding Week gave us the opportunity to do more to encourage kids to get the most out of the internet

our approach to a safer internet for children consists of– offering tools to support parenting in a digital environment

(parental controls, cost management solutions etc)– developing awareness and empowerment programmes for

parents & schoolchildren

moving from “Less Internet” to “Better Internet" – by shifting the focus from “child protection” alone, to a more

positive experience of the internet in a safe and responsible environment

coding initiatives contribute to a positive experience for children– awareness, literacy, education– creation, co-creation– sharing, engagement, self-confidence– fun

Orange participated in the code week with the #SuperCoders initiative in 4 European Countries in France, Spain, Poland, Romania

for children 10 to 13 years old, boys and girls, either already total computer whizzes or complete beginners

to create their own video animation/game and to experience what coding is

on Saturday 11 Oct, 250 children in 10 different European cities attended a 4-hour workshop

centered on a common programme and theme “SuperCoders”, so that the children could exchange ideas and compare their projects

using the MIT “Scratch” platform (http://scratch.mit.edu/ ) and a dedicated support toolkit

with live exchanges via telepresence between children from different workshops

with coaches from external partners and volunteer Orange employees

#SuperCoders workshops were organised with the support of local partners that provided their expertise and facilities

Simplon.co / Kid Coding Club, a social enterprise in France and Romania that provides coding training to under-privileged people and to children(Orange has also created a MOOC on coding with Simplon “Décoder le Code” https://solerni.org)

  MediaLab Prado, a program led by the city of Madrid and Orange Chair from the Polytechnic University of Madrid;

CoderDojo in Poland, promoting computer programming to young people.

#SuperCoders were the heroes of the animations and games created by the children. A tool kit was created in Scratch (characters, backgrounds, accessories, sounds…)
