AN article in one of the national newspapers merits particular atten-tion by the many pensioners resi-dent in Ndlambe. Annual rental for a post box is currently due and lev-ied at R339 pa for 2014. However for those aged 60 years, the rental

should be reduced by R136 to R203. Apparently information of this huge discount does not appear on the renewal form despatched to box-holders although your ID number is included on the document. It seems you have to somehow know that you

are entitled to the discount and you have to take proof of your age ( ? ) in order to request the discount. It seems that computerisation works only in favour of the post office. Pen-sioners, beware and be aware.L. Steinhardt

Centrestage brings

to Port AlfredReunion Magnificent 7 Reunion Magnificent 7

Lions Club of Port Alfred proudly brings you Centrestage’s flagship show The Magnifi-cent 7. The show pays tribute to the seven most popular rock n roll bands of all time – the Beatles, Beach Boys, Bee Gees, Roll-ing Stones, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Abba and Queen, as the band reinvents it-self to recreate each new sound and perfor-mance dynamic.

The original musical director of the popu-lar Centrestage all-star band, Donovan Hat-tingh, returns to South Africa for a month to join his long-time fellow band members before jetting back to Dubai, where he has

been performing at top hotels in the region since graduating from the local entertain-ment company. Donovan will be joined onstage by his performing partner Lani Botha, also an ex-Centrestage singer, who teams up with Donna Africa in the glamour department.

The Magnificent 7 performed to over 100 000 people over the years and has travelled around the country to great critical acclaim. The audio-visual spectacular went to Dur-ban for two months, where they teamed up with popular Natal-based comedian Aaron McIlroy, who appears on video in the show

in some hilarious audio-visual linking. McIl-roy plays a time travelling, shape-shifting scientist from the future who attempts to understand the culture of the time through the lens of rock n roll by reanimating the famous bands of the 60’s and 70’s.

Other band members include Gino Fab-bri on drums, who also pops out front oc-casionally for some showcase moments, current musical director Wayne Kallis, key-boardists Debbie Everaad and Fenlin Pietie, Bee Gees falsetto king Andre Strydom on bass, with the virtuoso Hattingh on lead guitar. Showman Cedric Van Der Schrik also

joins the talented cast in character as Fred-die Mercury, amongst other personas.

The much anticipated specialist show-stopper Bohemian Rhapsody will once again be performed in full vocal orchestra-tion and is an unmissable highlight of the performance.

The Magnficent 7 will be at the Port Al-fred High School Hall on Friday the 20th of December 2013 at 19:30. A cash bar (no food) and security is available. The seating is reserved in theatre style and tickers are R120 and can be purchased from Vanessa at Leach Pharmacy, Heritage Mall.

Soetbev Swimming Centre Update

SOME time ago Sunshine Es-cape reported on the needs of the Soetbev Swimming Centre in order to make it a sustain-able endeavour. Here with an update on the developments and a further request for your continued support.

Top of the centre’s shop-ping list was the request for a Robotic Filter for the pool. We are delighted to report that full sponsorship for this was received from the Ne-mato Foundation and it was received and installed on the 28th of November.

The robot will help save on electricity and labour and will improve the quality of the water as it is a filtration system on its own. “The less impurities there are in the water, the less chlorine the centre would have to use, Anette Crous said.

Ongoing fundraising is still required to reach sustainabil-ity status so if there are are individuals who are skilled and passionate about fill-ing out application forms for fund raising, please let Anette know.

“We receive constant infor-mation from Rhodes Univer-sity of all the foundations and organisations to who we can

apply for funding. We need someone who is passionate about doing the necessary research and filling in those applications for funding. This can be beneficial to all our local NPO organisations, i.e. Hospice, Child Welfare, etc.,” Anette said.

With regards to Pool Man-agement donations of white tiles and tile adhesive was received but some more is needed.

December also offers a great opportunity to generate income that can go toward the electricity bill by ensuring that there is a well-stocked tuck shop. “There is a good profit to be made on sweets , chips and cold drinks, es-pecially now in the holiday season,” Anette said. Anyone who would like to contribute should please get in touch with Anette at the pool as she has a list of items that are top sellers in the tuck shop.

Another area where some income can be raised is by having baby equipment for hire. There is a real need for this in the area and we urge you to donate items such as camping cots, feeding chairs, push chairs if you can. Many visitors arrive without these

items due to space constraints while travelling and many grandparents would like to ensure that the guestroom caters for their grandchild’s needs too in order to make it a hassle free seasonal stay.

Last but not least back to the Electricity bill – a big monthly expense especially during the winter and that is why the suggestion has been made that the centre starts stock piling electricity vouch-ers for winter. These vouch-ers can be purchased at Pick ‘n Pay or Spar. The procedure is as follows:

1. Ask the cashier at the pay point for the Eskom pre-paid voucher options.

2. Decide on amount and give cashier our Customer identification card number – 071 132 917 23

3. SMS Anette the electric-ity pin number on 076 485 0896

4. At BP or Beavers you can purchase a Uni-pin voucher without our identification number.

5. SMS the pin to 076 485 0896

6. Anette will send an ac-knowledgment of receipt sms to all received voucher pin numbers.

FORGIVENESS: your gift of love to yourself by Nicolette Lodge is a book that will appeal to anyone who wishes to be free of their past hurts and unhappiness, regardless of their gender, age, beliefs or status, which gives this book a broad target market.

Book Review

MANY readers reveal that despite thorough explanations of what forgiveness is, self-help books fail to teach ‘HOW to forgive’. This book fills this crucial gap.

Biographical in nature, it’s a ‘how to’ book that uses real-life situations and examples of forgiveness in action. Well-written and easy-to-read, the book features case studies, a Q&A section, and step-by-step processes.

We have all suffered at the mercy of others who are not living consciously. We all experience situations that deeply challenge us to forgive. It is part of being human. We know we need to forgive, but we don’t always know how. We try to forgive, and we say we have, but we continue to revisit our old stories and sour our present experience with negativity. Mastering forgiveness is a vital component of our human experience. It is integral to living a life of balance and harmony.

Whether you’re a man or a woman, homosexual or heterosexual, young or old, this book will change your life. It will teach you how to forgive and awaken to your greatest power, which is the gift of love you give yourself.

This book is a journey to your soul. With FORGIVENESS: your gift of love to yourself, you will be taken by the hand and led through the layers of misperception, lies and half-truths that are the barriers preventing you from letting go. Power and passion will return as you cut ties with the past, heal your hurts, and finally forgive and walk free.

Cape Town born Nicolette Lodge is an intuitive and self-trained inspirational writer and speaker. Married with two grown up sons, she now resides in Johannesburg, where she runs workshops and talks to empower others to triumph over fear, reclaim their power and live the life they deserve in health, happiness and love.

Her intention is to grow FORGIVENESS into a global brand starting with small businesses and running workshops to co-journey with people through the process of FORGIVENESS. She believes that to remove unforgiveness from people is to give them health in body, mind and soul. When enough people have let go of their pasts, a critical mass will be reached and our world will become a reflection of what we each have in our hearts.

Nicolette runs a successful blog with a growing local and international readership, and writes for the e-magazine www.Spice4Life.co.za which receives approximately 1 million hits per month. This is her first book, inspired by her work with her clients over the past 13 years. For more information visit Nicolette’s blogspot: www.nicolettelodge.blogspot.com or contact her on [email protected] or on 083 690-9698.

SUNSHINE ESCAPE HAS TWO COPIES OF THE BOOK TO GIVE AWAY – PLEASE SEND YOUR DETAILS TO [email protected] IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO BE ELIGIBLE FOR THE LUCKY DRAW BY FRIDAY 13 December 2013. The winners will be announced in the First edition of the Sunshine Escape after the New Year on the 10th Of January 2014.

Enviro-Wiz™ is a question and answer board game that can be played by individuals or in teams. There are over 600 different ques-tions (240 question cards) categorized as easy, medium and difficult. The purpose of the game is to educate people about nature and the environment in a fun and easy way. The game also contains some ‘green’ ques-tions which I hope will create an awareness of how certain human actions influence the environment. The game is suitable for play-ers aged between 12 – 99 years.

The game is the brainchild of Graham-stown resident, Brett Flanagan, a qualified electrician whose passion for nature led to the realisation of this game.

“In 2000, I joined FGASA (Field Guide As-sociation of South Africa) and passed their level one field guide examination. I started Amahlati Excursions, an outdoor adventure business, where I took overseas tourists and local school groups out on adventures.

“In 2004, I did a ten month environmental education certificate course through Rhodes University and Gold fields. All the partici-pants were told at the first meeting that they had to hand in an environmental education learning experience for their last project. Most of the participants were school teach-ers, whilst I was an electrician/field guide and I did not know much about a ‘teaching or learning experience’. So I decided on do-ing a question and answer game on nature

and the environment. By the end of the course when we had to hand in the project, I had made the game with 36 question cards, three questions and answers on each card. I named the game Enviro Wiz. Enviro for the environment and Wiz for wizard, the clever person,” Brett said.

The game then went from being an assign-ment to a hobby – gathering more questions and trial running the game - and ultimately a business venture. At the end of 2012 the first 20 games were printed and distributed to family and friends in order to get feedback from a wide variety of people – teacher, pro-fessors, mechanics, scholars, and more - in order make the necessary amendments.

The game was launched at the end of June 2013 at the Kirkwood Wildsfees.

“We are now marketing the game and look-ing for outlets to distribute the game. The questions are from a wide variety of topics from the stars in the sky to the bottom of the ocean, all about nature, animals and the en-vironment, as well as some ‘green’ and recy-cling questions and lots more. The purpose of the game is to teach people about the envi-ronment in a fun and easy way. The game can be played by individual players or in teams.

With over 600 questions and 240 question cards, the game sells for R350. For orders and any further enquiries please contact Brett on 083 831 4800 or at [email protected].

ROYAL PORT ALFRED GOLF CLUB WEEKLY RESULTS:

croQueT cornerHOW good to see Mercia and Alf back from their fabulous holiday, visiting Alf’s daughters & their families in America & then onto that wonderful Cruise! It seems we are now at that time of the year when most of us are either prepar-ing for visits from family members or packing to go further afield to spend Christmas with them. What-ever it is, may you keep well, enjoy it all and keep your mallets safe for your return to the lawns! As from this coming week, scarifying and major maintenance will be go-ing on. However, there will always be one lawn available for play, so

please don’t forget where the Club is!

What a super, fun evening the “Dop ‘n Tjop” was last Thursday. Many, many thanks must go to our braaimasters extraordinaire, who wish to remain anonymous. However no prizes for guessing their names! Thanks, too, to Phyl and her committee for organizing it, to the Bar couple, Noeline and Johan, to Barbs for her delicious bean salad, to Janet for her always popular curried pineapple, and for the baby spuds. The evening was rounded off with ice cream cones. Everything was delicious! Those

who couldn’t come for whatever reason missed out on a treat!

News from the Nationals, held in Somerset West , is that our only representative, Val Armstrong, was narrowly beaten 10 - 8 in the Handicap Singles Final. However, I heard from a little bird, that she still had 1 bisque, which she forgot to take! Congrats, anyway and well done, Val!

There are still a couple of plac-es available for the Annual Club Christmas party, so if for some reason you’ve not put your names up, make sure you do it before next week!

THE Guild Theatre in collabora-tion with Algoa FM, well known for its popular end-of-year pro-ductions, now brings you the Broadway hit, Disney’s Beauty and The Beast.

Directed by Amanda Bothma, with musical direction by Ger-maine Gamiet and choreography by Natalie Oberem, it will open at the Guild Theatre on December 6 and run until December 21.

Based on the 1991 Oscar award-wining Disney animated film, the stage adaptation of this

classic musical fairytale tells the story of a strong-willed young woman, Belle, who breaks the spell that turned a handsome Prince into a monstrous beast. Leoni Armour plays Belle and Marc Williams is the Beast.

East London’s brightest stars are in all the other roles, ac-companied by an 11-piece live band. And the sets and costumes can only be described as sim-ply spectacular. Beauty and The Beast is a musical that will cer-tainly be enjoyed by all.

Schools Boat Race back in TownON Friday and Saturday Port Alfred will be buzzing with ex-citement as the 2013 SA Schools Boat Race comes to town. The most important event in schools

rowing in the country, hosted by St Andrew’s College, makes its way to Port Alfred every year, and this year the competition appears to be par-ticularly intense.

In 2012 it was St Mary’s School, winners of the 4km girls’ event, and boys’ champions, St Alban’s of Pre-toria, who were clearly a cut above the rest. St Alban’s crossed the fin-ish line of the 6km final nearly 14 seconds ahead of St John’s College. St Mary’s is the oldest school in Johannesburg, while St Alban’s is comparatively young having been started in 1963, and will be look-ing to make the 50th anniversary of their school even more special by putting up a strong showing this weekend.

One team that will be looking to put an end to the dominance of the Gauteng schools in the boys’ section is Grey High School from Port Eliza-beth. After a slightly disappointing 2012 campaign, by the team’s own high standards, Grey has been train-ing hard throughout the week in the hopes of an improved showing this year. The signs seem to suggest that this will be the case, as two of the crew members went to Belgium earlier this year after being select-ed for the SA Development Rowing team. Their coach, Benjamin Ekron,

believes that their chances are sig-nificantly stronger this time round.

“We are feeling far more confi-dent than we did coming into the event last year. Aside from the two boys who went to Belgium, we have another four who we believe have a strong chance of making the SA Development team next year,” he added of his talented crew,” Ekron said.

As is the case with most of the coaches who come down, Ekron was thrilled to be in Port Alfred for the race on the Kowie.

“The beauty that these boys get to row in is unmatched. It is also an exciting course with some good corners. However, the weather cre-ates the greatest challenge, with calm conditions one day followed by strong winds the next,” he said.

With the hype building as the weekend draws nearer, this is one of those events that you do not want to miss. The Kowie River has provided the setting for a number of thrilling boat races in the past, and all indi-cations are that this one will be up there with the best of them.
