Sunset Elementary Is dedicated to meeting the needs of all learners in a safe environment. We strive to give each child the opportunity to inquire and succeed, as open-minded and globally aware life-long learners. We believe that educating the whole child as 21st century learners is the key to the development of caring, innovative, responsible, and reflective citizens who take action in their community and the world.
Administrators’ Message
April was an exciting month at Sunset! Our students participated in a variety of extracurricular activities including afternoon clubs, and evening activities. We hope that everyone enjoyed the Sunset Drama Club production of Mary Poppins. We are fortunate to have such a talented group of dedicated students. We also appreciate the tireless dedication of Mrs. Jill Beram-Liimatta and her team of volunteers including Ms. Wittek, Mrs. Quade, Mrs. Welsh, and Ms. Fluhr who provided a wonderful experience for our students. The commitment and effort of the Sunset Drama Club parents ensured the success of the play! What an awesome community effort by everyone!
Looking ahead, on 9th of May , three Sunset students will be competing in the Anne Arundel County Public Schools Elementary Science Fair. Our student scientists are Sara Robinson in 3rd Grade, Owen Hice in 4th Grade, Raeanne Franc in 5th Grade. Good luck to our students as they compete for county-wide recognition.
During May our 5th grade students will participate in an International Baccalaureate Exhibition at our school. The students used their research skills to explore many interesting topics about ways that they share the planet with others. Each team of students has been supported by a faculty mentor as they have prepared their projects. The 5th grade students will share their research action projects with the school community on Wednesday, May 8th at 6:30 p.m.
During the final weeks of the 2018-2019 school year many exciting activities have been planned for our entire school community including: the Spring Music Concert, field day/PTA Color Me Crazy Fun Run, and field trips. Please refer to the school calendar and website for more information. Thank you for supporting your children and our staff as we share opportunities and experiences as a PYP community of learners.
To ensure all students finish the year strong, it is important for them to read at home nightly. Our school-wide goal is for all students to read at grade level by June. Please contact your child’s teacher if you have any questions about the development of their reading skills.
Finally, if you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact us. Thank you for your continued support.

(Submit between March 1 - May 1 Each Year)
An out-of-area transfer is a request for a student residing in Anne Arundel County to attend a school within the county other than assigned boundary school (often referred to as a student's home school).
To find out what school is a child ’s “assigned boundary school,” go to Locate Your School. A parent or court-appointed guardian must enroll a child in the assigned boundary school prior to requesting an out-of-area transfer. If a child attends private school, he/she must first be enrolled in an AACPS prior to submitting a request.
More information and online forms can be found at www.aacps.org/outofarea Please return completed forms to the Board of Education after May 1st.
