A MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL SUNRISE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL KIMBERLY AREA SCHOOL DISTRICT September 19, 2019 Principal Reflections September 2019 Welcome to the 2019-2020 school year at Sunrise Elementary. As I am writing this newsletter column, our students and teachers have been working together for just over two weeks. At this time of year routines are being established and practiced. If you are new to our school, I am happy that you are here. Welcome! In our monthly newsletters, you will always find important information regarding upcoming events, dates, activities, opportunities, and policies. Please know that you can (and should) call if you have any questions. One of the most important things that we practice this month is safety. In fact, our staff members review plans and practice procedures routinely throughout the school year. All of us grew up understanding the need for fire drills. Tornado drills are just as important and in addition to these drills, it is important that we give the same attention to other safety considerations. To this point, I want you to know that we will periodically go over drill expectations with our students, so that they are safe and prepared in events involving internal and external threats. Of course we are an elementary school and thus are very cautious about how we go about these drills. I urge you to engage your child in a conversation about school safety. As the school year progresses, they will have more and more to share. As important as it is to practice these procedures, it is also important that we maintain a secure school at all times. In order to help every parent feel confident that their child is in a safe setting, it is necessary for all guests at our school be signed in and out of our main office. Unfortunately the effort to create a secure school can sometimes come across as impersonal. I say this because I understand the occasional need for a parent or grandparent to walk down to their child’s classroom. In these cases, signing-in through the Office is required. I am comfortable reiterating this expectation because, as the principal of the Kimberly 4K Center for Literacy, where our students could easily get swallowed up by a crowd of adults in the hallway, this expectation works. There are additional safety topics that I will reflect on over the course of the school year, but as we settle in to these systems I hope to talk about the roles that we all play in the learning lives of our students. For now I will limit myself to two additional safety topics. First, please be aware that “pets” are not allowed in the school building without prior approval. It should be noted that we have many people/children in our care and this comes with different allergies, fears and experiences that should be respected. Thank you for your cooperation with this. Finally, although our parking lot has a natural flow, it can, at times, move slower than we would like. It is absolutely imperative that all drivers on our school grounds come and go with patience and an awareness of children in the vicinity. We are off to a great start. Please know that I am always open to any questions or concerns that you may have. I welcome you to contact me here at Sunrise (954- 1822) or by email ([email protected]). Thank you all so much for your partnership. Principal Reflections September 2019

Welcome to the 2019-2020 school year at Sunrise Elementary.

I welcome you to contact me here at Sunrise (954-1822) or by email ([email protected]). PBIS UPDATE Our Sunrise Stinger challenge this year is to have good attitudes when things don’t go our way or when things get difficult. We are encouraging children to have perseverance and to think or talk through the tricky parts. Sometimes it is by listening to a team mate/classmate. Sometimes it is taking a deep breath and changing our attitude. Or sometimes it might be walking away and come back later with a

fresh mind.

Our Friday assembly Kick Off was led by Mrs. Roth. Her class put on a skit featuring Buzz. They modeled the importance of having a good attitude while playing a game. The assembly welcomed Mr. Brian Butch as a guest speaker. He reminded us that we have 2 ears (for listening twice as much) and 1 mouth (to use half as much). He also encouraged the kids to listening and say thank you to parents and teachers often. Our teachers came out to play a game of Human Hungry Hippos to show how to have fun and have a good attitude while playing a challenging game. Fun was had by all! We wrapped up our assembly with a Three Screen sneak peek

preview that will be shown at the end of January.

We will recognize one student per class per month who, at times, has shown a good attitude while playing and learning. Their names will be announced and will appear on our Game of Life board in the Sunrise entrance. Guess who was showing the Stinger Way? Will be featured in the Sunrise monthly

newsletter.

BACK TO SCHOOL SAFETY Now that school is back in session, please remember to drive safely around pedestrians, school buses and

bicyclists, and to provide children with the necessary knowledge to stay safe on their way to school, while at school

and on their way home. Whether students walk, ride their bike, take the bus or drive to school, it is extremely

important that they—and motorists around them—take proper safety precautions.

Please remember to:

Slow down and watch for students in school zones and wherever children are present

Drive cautiously around school buses, including obeying the amber warning and red stopping systems

Follow the safety procedures for drop off and pick up at our school

Safety is a top priority and we appreciate your support in helping to keep the children in our community safe.

STUDENT NONDISCRIMINATION STATEMENT The Kimberly Area School District does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, national origin, ancestry, creed, pregnancy, marital status, parental status, sexual orientation, sex, (including transgender status, change of sex or gender identity), or physical, mental, emotional, or learning disability ("Protected Classes") in any of

its student programs and activities.

BOX TOPS FOR EDUCATION

MEDICATIONS AT SCHOOL

Sunrise is still collecting Box Tops for Education. You may turn them into the office or, there is a new and easy electronic way to collect them. It’s called Scan and Save. Click Here for a short video on how to scan and save for

Sunrise Elementary. Thanks for all your help in earning money for our school.

Just a reminder: Prescription medication to be given at school must have a written order from your physician on forms available in the office. Over-the-counter medication, like cough drops and Tylenol, will also need a form filled out, but does not require a physician’s signature. All medication must be in it’s original container. No medication will be given without a signed consent form. Please click here to print the medication consent form.

If you have any questions, please call Monica in the office at 954-1822.

AwarenessStudents in our elementary schools have a multitude of opportunities to experience the world of work through classroom instruction, field trips, guest speakers and ACP geared life skills lessons. Each child is encouraged to explore their developing strengths and interests through our diverse curriculum.

5K to 4th

Grade

ExplorationWhile at intermediate school, students begin to explore career clusters in a more personalized way through the use of career exploration software and interest inventories. They learn about the importance of looking at their skills, interests and personality when determining if a career cluster might be a good fit for them and worth further exploration.

5th & 6th

Grade

ConnectionsStudents will experience a variety of opportunities to help them begin narrowing their focus of possible career options. Throughout their time at JRG, they will thoughtfully consider who they are, reflecting on their skills, interests and personality to begin making connections to career clusters that could be a good fit.

11th Grade

Through guided reflection with their ACP advisors, juniors will research what is needed to

be successful on the paths they are considering, assess themselves against those requirements and refine their plan as needed to meet their

personal goals. This may be done through job shadows, interviews, career speakers and more. With

these experiences students will be able to develop an actionable plan for their future.
