MAS OverviewMAS Overview
Message Queue for Each Device– List of all messages that currently should be displayed– Priority from 1 to 256 assigned to each message– Highest (closest to 1) priority is displayed
• If two messages share highest priority, first one sent wins– If queue is empty, device is blanked
Default Priorities (can be changed)– 1: Manually created messages– 2 – 255: Used by Incident Management system– 256: DMS message sequences– Travel Time messages typically have default near 256
DMS and HAR Messages Redirected to MAS– Send Message: Add Message to Queue– Blank Device: Remove All Messages from Queue

MAS DialogsMAS Dialogs
Queue Manager– Displays all device
queues, status– Filter by device type,
queue status, etc.
Device Queue– Displays all queued
messages– Edit message text,
priority

DMS Send MessageDMS Send Message
Available Functions– Load saved message from libraries– Edit or create new message (formatted for sign size) – Set attributes of message (duration, priority, etc.)
Message Sent to MAS Queue for Device

DMS Spelling ConflictsDMS Spelling Conflicts
Approved Words– Administrators specify which words are acceptable for messages– Messages with other words generate Spelling Conflicts
Spelling Conflict Dialog– Appears to all users with approval permission– Response of first user to reply is acknowledged– May approve, reject, or modify conflicting message
Only Triggers as Message is Sent to Sign from MAS– Adding messages to queue does not check spelling
August 9, 2006Ad Hoc Operator Training 11
DMS Message LibrariesDMS Message Libraries
Message Libraries– Contain stored messages used
frequently– May have sub-libraries
Message Library Dialog– Manage libraries– Manage sub-libraries– Manage stored messages
August 9, 2006Ad Hoc Operator Training 12
DMS SequencesDMS Sequences
Sequences– Series of messages to be placed on
specified signs at specified times Sequence Library Dialog
– Manage libraries of sequences– Manage sub-libraries
Edit Sequence Dialog– Manage sequences– Manage the sequence items stored

DMS GroupsDMS Groups
DMS Groups– Collection of several DMS devices– Can issue same command to all devices at once
• Send message (public service announcements)• Update status
DMS Group Editor– Add, rename, delete groups– Change devices in groups
August 9, 2006Ad Hoc Operator Training 14
DMS TrailblazersDMS Trailblazers
Trailblazers Treated as Simplified DMS Devices– View current display– Adjust brightness– Add message to
MAS queue

Response Plan Generation
August 9, 2006Ad Hoc Operator Training 16
Device Selection AlgorithmDevice Selection Algorithm
Maximum Distance of Recommended Devices Based on Severity– Level 1: least severe, smallest distance– Level 2: moderate, medium distance– Level 3: most severe, largest distance
Distance Calculation– DMS devices: Freeway travel distance– HAR devices: Point-to-point distance
Recommended Message Priority– Priority decreases further device is from event– Priority algorithm: 2 + (Distance from device to event)
Many Criteria Configurable– May be changed by local administrators
August 9, 2006Ad Hoc Operator Training 17
DMS Distance CalculationDMS Distance Calculation
DMS Devices Linked– Next and previous signs on same and other freeways– Configured by administrators
Sample Sign Layout

DMS Distance CalculationDMS Distance Calculation
Selecting Signs for Event– Signs along all freeways which could lead to event identified– Signs within maximum distance included in response plan
Possible Signs for Sample Event
August 9, 2006Ad Hoc Operator Training 19
Recommended Response PlansRecommended Response Plans
Recommended Response Plans– Messages built according to message
templates configured by administrator– Devices selected by distance
May Change Recommendation– Search distance may be modified– Recommended Response Plan may
be used as base for editing final response plan
Existing Response Plan Choices– Replace existing with new plan– Add new plan over existing plan– Add only devices which are not in
existing plan
August 9, 2006Ad Hoc Operator Training 20
Managing Response PlansManaging Response Plans
Response Plan Source– Recommended Response Plan– Created from scratch
Add Devices– Buttons in dialog– Right click on map icons
Edit / Remove Device Messages Activate Plan
– Sends messages to MAS queues– Messages display if highest priority
Terminate Plan– Removes messages from MAS
queues
