“I think it’s important that a person have many different choices in regard to the statement their eyewear makes,” Larry Leight, Mr Oliver Peoples

told us recently. “It’s important that eyewear reflects the style and character of a person, not only be a medical device.”

It’s true of course and we’ve been working with manic fervour on a sparkling new website to bring you the best eyewear for a stylish summer, and keep you up-to-date on all things sunglasses.

Did we say up-to-date? A mere slip, as this season’s trend brings us back to the seventies. Those designers really

want us reaching for our time-capsule collection this summer.Unfortunately the seventies was before Oliver Peoples was born and back then you were

invited to “Learn the only medically approved reasons for wearing tinted lenses”, or told “people buy sunglasses with less know-how than they apply to most any other purchase”.

Stark warnings indeed. “Glamour” and “Hollywood look” were distastefully caged with quote marks for fear we might start wearing sunglasses for fun.

So with a ‘look what Larry says’ rebellious streak we’ve unleashed that glamour and freed the Hollywood look. We can also better mere know-how. See for yourself...

We ask the man behind the Oliver Peoples eyewear legacy to share his thoughts with us here at Sunglasses Shop.

Two brothers once bought some eyewear at a New York auction. As well as wonderful handmade American frames from the 20s and

30s, the lot also contained a receipt signed by a Mr Oliver Peoples. The brothers ran with the idea and so a brand was born. Discreet of logo but abundant with style Oliver Peoples became a Hollywood phenomenon and the late Mr Oliver Peoples had given his name to an eyewear legacy created by the great Larry Leight.

It is often the case that most brands see eyewear as an afterthought. What do you see in eyewear that’s different? Eyewear might be an afterthought for some, but the face is what is first seen upon introduction. A glance across a room can reveal so much about a personality. It’s important that eyewear reflects the style and character of a person, not only be a medical device.

Where does your passion for eyewear come from? It comes from wanting people to look and feel their best while being able to express themselves in a great pair of stylish quality frames. I think it’s important that a

person have many different choices in regard to the statement their eyewear makes. I was encouraged by a family friend who was an optometrist. I earned a degree as a certified optician and began my journey in the eye-wear industry.

If you had never been an optician, would you still be a designer of sorts? I have always been interested in fashion. If I wasn’t designing eyewear I would probably want to try shoes.

Do you prefer designing eyewear for men or women? I like doing both. Men tend to gravitate towards neutral colours and shapes, which fits with the brand’s DNA of timeless and classic designs. I enjoy designing for women because they take risks and will wear bolder statement pieces.

So do you have an ideal wearer? Someone in mind when you make a new frame? I envision designing fashionable, desirable, quality eyewear for progressive and expressive individuals, both men and

The LeIghTand The greaT

Page 13: Sunglasses Shop Magazine Issue 4

women. Our core customer is confident in their individual style. Being a Los Angeles based brand, we have many recognisable faces in the entertainment industry as our clients. I often say that one of the best parts of this journey over the past 25 years is that the clientele we appeal to is exactly who I have always had in mind.

It’s impossible to get hold of some of your most popular frames. Why do you dis-continue the great sellers, for example the O Malley? Yes, it is hard to find some of our original and most iconic styles between 1987 and 1994.

We kept these styles limited and always understood that the value is enriched if they are not over produced.

When you refer to a frame as being ‘not tailored’, what does this

mean? Tailored, to me, means cosmeti-cally fitting the face. It also means fitting

to one’s style. The special finishes and de-tails that I incorporate in our designs do set us apart from others, but for the most part it is the character and style of the eyewear that seems to always be in perfect timing

with fashion.

13

I envision designing fashionable,

desirable, quality eyewear for

progressive and

expressive individuals,

both men and women.

Page 14: Sunglasses Shop Magazine Issue 4

What about your other passion, surfing? Surfing is about freedom and con-necting with the elements of nature and the ocean. It is about the dream of when all the elements come together and you find yourself surfing the most perfect waves in the world in the most perfect conditions. For me, surfing is the greatest release of the mind and body – being able to let go of everything else except for that mo-ment in time when you are in the water.

have you ever designed your own surfboard? Yes, several times, but I never actually built it.

What’s your perfect day then? My perfect day is spent on the beach at my home in Hawaii with my family. It gets even better if the conditions and surf are perfect.

And your favourite frame – one that’s not OP? The Identity frame I designed for Andy Warhol in the 80s. The Identity was a one-off piece designed exclusively for Andy Warhol and was worn for German Vogue’s 1987 June cover shot. It gave me the confi-dence to start my own brand and is what re-ally started it all for me. That feeling of seeing the cover is one I will always remember.

What’s your favourite OP frame? It is a close tie between the 1955, OP-505 and the O’Malley, which have recently been re-released for the first time as part of a special vintage collection. I’d have to say my favour-ite is the O’Malley (coming to Sunglasses Shop this summer).

Why this one? It’s just a great, classic style with superior quality and detailing. The super thin, aged acetate makes it different from other similar frames in that category. It was worn by actor Christian Bale in the infamous, “American Psycho.” which was a great mo-ment in our company history. They say in the book that he redefines a way a Wall Street business man dress, Valentino suit, Gucci loafers, and Oliver Peoples glasses… or something like that.

Do you like the limelight or are you more of the reclusive artist type? I wouldn’t say I’m the limelight type, but I’m definitely not reclusive. I enjoy being surrounded by friends, artists and anyone with passion to share.

And finally, if you had a thinking cap, what brand would it be? It would have to be Hermes. It’s a classic, luxury brand with great heritage and understated designs like ours. ML

Rather than putting on sunglasses to eat al fresco he instead puts them on for prestigious red carpet events such as the Oscars. The Olsen twins are style icons. Every 5 feet 1 apiece of them is proof that they have a sense of style that can’t

be bought or taught. Screaming effortless, downtown-cool, Sunglasses Shop couldn’t wait to get its mitts on the first Olsen eyewear collection, The Row.

Fans of their own eyewear too, the Olsen girls are often papped sporting something from their collection, which is heavily inspired by their extensive collection of vintage pieces. Inspecting each frill, layer and stitch of their pre loved finds, the girls count their fascination as a main influence on their designs.

The Row Eyewear collection consists of premium framework that lends itself to a unisex audience. The palette includes a concoction of subtly lux horns, tortoise-shells and classic black, with the lenses following suit for an incognito, so- cool-its-horizontal

vibe. Branding is kept to a minimum, but is sought after with intricate Rs, ‘hidden’ almost like rare treasures on the ear socks, arms and temples of the collection. Linking to the mainline apparel collection, The Row eyewear includes luxe leather detailing that makes a traditional contrast against the modern day materials that the designers have used. Encased in outlandishly edgy but sophisticated leather embossed sunglass cases, The Row eyewear is darkly opulent, without being frilly, from start to finish.

Beautiful, intriguing and fiercely setting trends, the Olsen twins may look like butter wouldn’t melt, but these pint sized fashionistas are a force not to be reckoned

with. Both glamour grunge princesses are razor sharp when it comes to what’s hot and have created an

empire that is set to see them become one of the largest

players in mid-twenty-first-century American fashion. And they’re still only 24.

Mosley Tribes comes from the heart and childhood of Larry Leight, the man who co-founded the

phenomenon that is Oliver Peoples. He and also OP employee Bill Barton, came up with the idea of a new line of sunglasses back in 2005, and since then Mosley has looked to New York, Italy, Santé Fe New Mexico and recently Hawaii to inspire its wonderful designs.

Mosley’s style is found in the very earth of the places it visits, in the hearts of the people and the artists that live there.

But for Larry Leight Mosley Tribes offers him the chance to take his designs to new place. While the Sunset Boulevard home of Oliver Peoples means its collections sit beautifully on the face of Hollywood, with Mosley Larry Leight can bring a new synergy between style and utility.

Naturally Hollywood stars love Mosley just as much as Oliver Peoples, with Jay Z, Reese Witherspoon and David Beckham all fans.

“Mosley Tribes offers me the opportunity to play around with different cultures and

trends,” says Larry. “It was actually inspired by my childhood in Santa Monica, surfing and skating, Lords of Dogtown days.”

This season it was the beautiful Kauai in Hawaii lent its landscape to the Mosley dream and as the collection was inspired by global exploration, so the islands provided the perfect terrain. Hawaii was the perfect location to bring the season’s designs to life.

“Kauai is called the Garden Isle for a good reason,” says Patrick Wright Mosley’s Art Director. “More rainfall occurs here than

Mosley Tribes is a wonderful adventure captured in amazing sunglasses shapes. Each season Mosley Tribes travels to a new place, a destination that becomes the basis for the Mosley inspiration. It’s a sunglasses dream world.

anywhere else in the world and therefore the Island boasts immense rain forests, spec-tacular jungles and epic waterfalls.

“Though we chose Kauai for its diverse array of tropical and arid landscapes and how well it fits with our theme for the sea-son,” he added, “there is also a personal connection to this location. Larry has trav-elled to Kauai regularly for the last 35 years and has close ties and extensive knowledge of the Island. I myself also have close ties to Kauai, travelling there as a child to visit family and spending summers exploring the small island.”

Talking of some of Mosley’s other collabo-rations, Larry says that each artist they work with brings a unique quality to the table. One

of last season’s highlights was during an incredible exploration into the New Mexico desert. Mosley Tribes visited Darren Vigil Gray, an artist of Apache descent known for his dreamscapes, landscapes and portraits. Mosley observed Gray and documented his process of creativity.

How all this comes together in a pair of sunglasses is a natural process. “It really comes full circle,” said Larry. “From the birth of the idea, to the influencer, the creation and back to the wearer. Everything and eve-ryone is ultimately connected in some way.”

No-one is sure where Mosley will end up next season – its islands campaign has been wrapped up – but whichever direction Mos-ley takes, it’s sure to be a ride on the wind.

SEE HOW THEY RUNLong distance running is a real marathon. Why make it harder?

We’re always telling you how impor-tant sunglasses are when you’re running but it’s one area that’s still

being erm... overlooked.adidas tell us that each year they see

many, many of the 36,000 people arriving ready for the London Marathon without any proper eyewear. They have seen countless people making last-minute DIY prescriptions, taping glasses to the inside of sunglasses or arriving with glasses that are heavy and unfit for the long journey ahead.

The 26 miles of marathon is a lot to cover, whereas your eyes aren’t. With poor fitting eyewear, especially where prescriptions are concerned, a marathon can become a real slog and as one runner tells us, “I now con-sider sunglasses a vital piece of my running attire.” And naturally so do we.

“Our slogan is ‘See Better. Be Better’ and this is definitely the case when it comes to the marathon,” says adidas Sports Market-ing Manager, James Hendy. “It’s essential that you have the right eyewear as 26 miles is a huge challenge so you need to be con-fident that your eyewear will provide you the comfort and protection you need to make it to the finish line.”

Of course, sunglasses can offer you all sorts of advantages when it comes to these, the biggest of the world’s running races. Bet-

SEE HOW THEY RUNter protection, less squinting and improved concentration are all there, alongside the basic requirement of being able to see the runner in front of you.

While lesser eyewear can take the strain of a marathon harder than your body, and may not even see you through to the finish, adidas have among its frame choices some that weigh about the same as a pair of shoelaces, which is brilliant for that hardest of home straights.

“In the past, some runners have arrived with DIY prescription sunglasses where they have attempted to tape their specs to their sunglasses,” James warns. “They are de-lighted to find out that prescription solutions are available in the adidas sunglass range and that the options are very simple and effective to use.”

And where do poor-sighted runners see these options? Often during the London Marathon Expo at London Docklands’ ExCel Centre, of course.

In the week prior to the race runners can register, get their numbers and visit a whole range of sporting booths. Twice as many people visit the Expo as those who will actu-ally take part in the marathon. That means there’s a lot of people who really want to

Taping sunglasses to your specs won’t get the result you want.

see something. You can pick out your ideal running sunglasses and try them out on a lap of the adidas booth.

Key frames in the adidas running arsenal include Adizero, T-sight, Shield, Adivista and Adilibria Shield.

adidas believe that not enough people know about these prescription options, so consider that if you’re not running a mara-thon you’ll still have a season of squinting ahead of you to contend with, or a huge sellotape bill.

“For me personally,” says Joe Elliott who is a marathon runner, “if I do not wear my sunglasses whilst running then I tend to screw up my eyes which in turn hunches my shoulders and prevents me from relaxing properly whilst running.

“It is worth trying on a number of pairs as you have to be certain they will be comfort-

able during your long runs,” he added. “It is also important that they are not going to steam up after 45 minutes so it is worth pay-ing a little extra for the quality pairs.”

It’s all advice we recommend every runner should look at with open eyes this summer.

PErfOrmancE InSErT: Can be integrated easily and rapidly into adidas performance sports eyewear with-out interfering with the functionality. Cost effective and easy to glaze.

rImLESS PErfOrmancE InSErT: Like the full-rimmed version it’s cost effec-tive and easy to glaze. It’s almost invisible and the deeper lens shape means its suit-able for bifocals and progressive lenses.

Bold and Bright: Saleen taps into the bloc colour trend this season with an electric blue jumpsuit and a ravishing red blazer. Perfectly finished with the Prada 03ns which adds a seductive edge to a playful outfit.

A List Style: Penny steals the show wearing Lulu Guiness Ingrid. These retro delights were the cherry on top of an elegant ensemble. The polka dot cat eye frame straight out of the 50s, adds Hollywood glamour to some chic attire.

Model Male:Pete’s effortless style makes him the only male in our edit. Donning the Oliver Goldsmith Carl in bottle green, Pete has the perfect transitional outfit from winter to spring, with the Carl adding a twist of colour.

as always at London Fashion Week individuality stood out. This time, with a few exceptions, the attending fashionistas and dedicated followers of stylishness opted for autumnal colours; the ladies wore their heels sky high and the oversized cardigan was a front row VIP. SeventieS Hip witHout tHe HippyThe official launch of DIANE von FURSTENBERG sunglasses was one of the most eagerly awaited of the year so far, not least because it has been years since DVF has had signa-ture shades on the market, but because the with the seventies returned to trend, who better to create this season’s sunglasses than seventies style queen DVF?

Imagine a young Diane Von Furstenberg in the seventies and you instantly have a feel for her signature shades. Signature DVF details such as love knots and kissing lips appear throughout the collection, and even prints from her famed wrap dresses. Consequently DVF has been flying off the shelves as more and more fashionistas discover the perfect accessory for their seventies style wrap dress. Each frame is expertly crafted and 100 per cent gorgeous.

New to Sunglasses Shop. In our eyes, summer must-haves.First Look...

oliver GoldSmitH - A FAmily AFFAirFor years P. Oliver Goldsmith’s frames had a cult following among the most stylish men and women the sixties had to offer. His bespoke pieces for Hollywood both on and off screen appeared in fashion magazines around the world. Word spread inspiring countless copies. His client list name checked every and anyone including Grace Kelly, Audrey Hepburn, Michael Cain and Sophia Loren.

But in 1976 Oliver Goldsmith suddenly closed its doors and the beloved label disap-peared. That is until in 2005 after his granddaughter Claire Goldsmith rediscovered the brand and decided to re-release classic designs from its archives.

Each one is individually hand-shaped and hand-polished, resulting in a rich sheen and available in an array of colours. To get your hands on these exclusive frames, best put your name on the waiting list now.

The spring/summer runway was a riot of colour, planted with florals and models who catwalked their way back to the stylish seventies. Sunglasses Shop looks at the season’s must-haves. CH

SeaSonS in The

FloralsThe spring/summer catwalk has a veritable gardener’s world of floral fancies to inspire your ward-robe for our favourite time of year. Summer is seriously fun at D&G as the seventies came via the Good Life with old school florals and gingham. The catwalk was even lined with summer bedding.

But this is not to be mistaken for a summer of love; this flower power has its own particular and varied personality. For your flowers to really flourish, you need to observe minimalism, a sense of fun and a bit of attitude. Pared down cuts and a certain primness is spliced with peek-a-boo lace with the odd eyeball and near-wellie to boot.

ColoursColour is of course a perennial thing for spring and summer, but a distinct newness pervaded the runway. Brights, primaries and neons were fully explored and cat eyes were essential to the house of Christian Dior as it channelled Bettie Page in fluro.

At Raf Simons we saw a stroke of very deliberate col-our beneath a box fresh tee, in the form of architectural blocking. Glorious colour also clashed, bashed and crashed, but never matched at Jil Sander, Sportmax and Versus. Lace was given a new kick with neons and brights at Christopher Kane and Erdem and it was back to basics with primaries too. Prada was one of the most memorable colour fests for the spring/summer catwalk with primaries and brights played against black stripes – a mischievous monkey and the odd banana thrown in for fun and more colour. High lighter neon was the perfect foil for tamer hues and florals. spring/summer’s hardcore colour concerns also had a fixation with full on blues via Dior, Miu Miu and Celine. At Pucci it was teamed perfectly with tan leather and suede accessories.

Go Neon in Nooka

At only six years young the brand from New York artist Matthew Wald-

man is already hitting big. Before launching his first watch collection on his own label, Waldman had designed for the Japanese watch company Seiko. Now Nooka have their own ranges of not only watches but also fragrances, jew-ellery and of course eyewear.

The Mercury collection is one not to be missed by anyone. Futuristic angles, frames in vibrant colours and mirrored lenses cap-tivate. These bold shades guaran-tee you a fashion statement that won’t soon be forgotten. And even though beauty knows no pain, that’s already been taken care of as well. You can relax knowing that the rubber nose piece and ear guards provide comfort while you are strutting down the streets like they are a New York catwalk. VR

SeventiesSeventies style was rife and for this trend sun-glasses are key. In this era, size matters. Large, luxe aviators and oversized frames are mandatory. At Marc Jacobs the disco era was interpreted with a luxuriance, and a modern vibe. At Miu Miu, amongst a smattering of references, seventies glam rock served its purpose in heavy silver jackets. Muses for

the season have been Bianca Jagger, Diane Keaton and Jodie Foster’s

Iris of Scorsese’s 1976 clas-sic Taxi Driver.

in styleWith the release of its celebratory

‘1921’ collection Gucci, not so long ago voted the most coveted

luxury brand in the world, looks back at its 90-year-journey.

As with any ninety-year-old, the face has changed over the years and Gucci’s face is its talented creative directors who have included Tom Ford, current director Frida Giannini, and Dawn Mello (who hired Ford back in 1990). Today Gucci still captivates and with $3.4 billion in sales last year, it’s looking good for ninety.

Luggage and Luxe: Working at London’s Savoy, Guccio Gucci watched how luxury permeated everything the swanky guests brought, even down to their luggage. In 1921 Gucci opened up a leather goods shop in his native city of Florence, Italy. Success soon led to expansion. Gucci’s traditional horse bit motif (see the 3098 sun-glasses below) began to appear and in 1990 the Metropolitan Museum of Art acquired the

Gucci horse bit loafer as part of its ongo-ing collection, showing the timelessness of Gucci designs. Iconic: Much of today’s Gucci is still based its iconic past. The bamboo handbag, introduced in 1953 became a Hollywood favourite. Elizabeth Taylor, Grace Kelly and Sophia Loren were fans and today’s bamboo bag is the same notion, except that back then the skilled Gucci craftsman had needed clever solutions to post war rationing.

In the sixties, after Jackie Onassis was constantly spotted clutching a Gucci bag, it was renamed Jackie O and is still one of Gu-cci’s bestsellers. The green-red-green horse saddle webbing (see the 1627 sunglasses below) found on clothing and accessories also became the hallmark of connoisseurs. Retro Future: These days the house of Gu-cci has of course entered the social media stage with Gucci Eyeweb. Gucci has also gone eco-friendly with a campaign to reduce its impact on the environment, and Gucci presents its first childrenswear collection, that includes a sunglasses range, fronted by Jennifer Lopez’s twins Emme and Maximil-lion. To celebrate Gucci gave a $1million donation to UNICEF’s ‘Schools for Africa’.

Gucci continues to reinvent and contin-ues to travel with style. Case in point is the 2011Gucci-Fiat 500 luxe car collaboration.

it started with luggage and Gucci is still looking good 90 years later in the Fiat 500. sunglasses shop follows Gucci’s journey. AW

Lock and Load

Oakley’s superior technology just keeps on coming and this summer watch out for its latest release

the Fast Jacket. It’s the next evolution of Oakley eyewear technology and the first semi-rimless model to use Oakley’s Switch-Lock technology.

Oakley fans will remember the ground-breaking Jawbone, released two years ago and lauded for its revolutionary SwitchLock Technology. The new Fast Jacket is like the Jawbone, but without the jawbone. If you’ve ever seen Oakley’s amaz-ing Jawbone you’ll know what we mean and you’ll know straight away why it was so called. The SwitchLock opens the bottom half of the frame wide like a skeletal dinosaur jaw.

You just swap your lenses and went about your business. It has a smaller broth-er too – the Split Jacket. Brilliantly easy.

For us at Sunglasses Shop the Jaw-bone is one of the best ever frames in the world of performance sunglasses and the new Fast Jacket evolves all that clever SwitchLock technology.
