program-focused, the missional church prides itself on being people-focused. Christian author Brian McLaren defines it as “To be and make disciples in authentic community for the good of the world.” This makes our work in the world not for myself but for the purpose of being Good Samaritans in the world – the people who cross the road to help the foreigner, the wounded, the helpless, the poor. In other words, it is more about relationships with others, and less about membership or differentiating between insiders and outsiders. Pastor Bonnie Wilcox

Take a Step out of Your Comfort Zone…and then Take Another: On Being a Missional Church This is the advice of Deb Hirsch, a minister at The Tribe, an eclectic church of missional artists and vagabonds in downtown LA. Deb was one of the speakers at a conference I attended last month. It was part of her presentation on the Incarnational Way of Being Missional. I invite you into a conversation about these new labels on the work the Church of Jesus Christ has done for centuries – Loving God and loving our neighbors. Chew on these big ‘church’ words and spend some time considering how the work we do together at Gustavus Adolphus (GA Church) fits this model. Incarnation literally means embodied in flesh or taking on flesh, as Jesus, the Son of God, came into the world in human form. As Lutherans, we believe and teach that Jesus Christ was both divine (of God) and human (of the flesh). To live incarnationally means that everywhere we go, we are Christ’s church, his body, his life with skin on. We are on holy ground everywhere that we are because Jesus is with us, in us, and working through us. In this way, there is no sacred verses secular because our whole lives, even as we are out in the cultures we live within, are organically connected to the Life and Work of God in the world. Missional is a newer term in the Christian Church. The missional movement, in many ways, is a counter force to the traditional way of “doing” church. Rather than being

We all know the feeling when we have made a commitment to something and it is completed! We are proud of ourselves for completing it… and grateful that we can then go on and

tackle something else on our list. That is the case with the Companion Village Plot (CVP) – that one acre plot of land set aside to develop best practices in raising a crop with a higher yield. The Kernels for Kiponzelo corn feed the past three years has funded our 3-year commitment of aiding our partners in being more self sufficient as they develop a higher yield from this acreage. Each CVP is under the guidance of highly trained Tanzanians and volunteers that have worked with the Institute of Agriculture at Tumaini University to develop a very specific program for the individual plots. The program takes into account the moisture of an area, specific soil samples, fertilizers and proper timing of applications, and regular meetings with the local farmers to help them understand the program and its need to follow the protocols exactly in order to gain their highest yield. Kiponzelo now has established their plot and completed their 3-year guided program…and it is working quite well. Yield was higher, but like all of us, at times they were not as rigid in following the timelines and now know the consequences with not as high a yield as they wanted…but it is still going well! So

Accomplishment…and a new Opportunity

to GA for the support of our partnership with Kiponzelo, I say a very big THANK YOU, and all of us can feel proud for honoring this commitment. Accomplished!!! But there is always another opportunity waiting…and it is connected to the CVP program. Those that developed the program have come to realize that there is ongoing work that needs to continue and that it reaches far beyond the individual plots of our partnership parishes in Iringa. The well- known concept of our U.S. Agricultural Extension Agency is being implemented as an Agricultural Extension Network in Tanzania – Phase 2. Their objective: “To establish an extension network at Tumaini University, Iringa, Tanzania for delivery of current, research-based knowledge on agriculture and the food system. The extension network will address the needs of

producers and others in agribusiness so that there can be adequate food to meet the needs of citizens in the region and to improve their standard of living.” It will be interesting to see this new program add additional long term education and assistance to our Tanzanian brothers/sisters in their quest for a higher standard of living and adequate food for their families and community. The Global Mission Committee has signed a 3-year commitment of $1,000 a year in support of this newly developed network. We will continue to keep you update. Prayers for our partners in ministry are so much appreciated. Together we can be a part of a changing world. Jean Schwartz, Global Mission Committee, chair

First, a word of thanks for the welcome you have extended to me in these first six weeks of my time here at GA. It is a real privilege to serve with and among you in this time of

pastoral transition. I have already had the opportunity to meet a lot of great people (more people than I can remember names, that’s for sure!), and I look forward to getting to know many more of you in the days and week to come. I arrived here at GA in mid April, and I was able to slip under the newsletter deadline for the May newsletter with an article which offered you a chance to find out a little bit of personal history. [If you didn’t have a chance to read that article, there is a small trifold handout available at the Welcome Desk in the Gathering Area which contains that introductory information.] So I thought for this June issue that I would share something about my role as an intentional interim pastor among you. The third word of that phrase – pastor – is the primary word for me. The covenant I entered into with GA begins by listing the following pastoral tasks: (1) Lead worship and preach, (2) administer the Sacraments, (3) perform special services, including marriages and funerals, (4) teach in the congregation’s education program, and (5) do pastoral calling – and I intend to be faithful to that calling as a pastor. Even though my time here will be relatively short, I am committed to be a part of the ongoing mission and ministry of this congregation, to work side by side with Pastor Bonnie, and those duties comprise

From Pastor Phil...

the fundamental ways you and I will be connected and walk together in our lives of faith. However, in addition to that, I have a specialized role here, and that is defined by the other two words of the phrase. I am an interim pastor, someone who is not long-term in a congregation but rather is contractually time-limited. Even more, though, I am also an intentional interim pastor, someone who comes with the training and background to intentionally help lead a healthy, honest process of congregational self-assessment and then be a resource for the congregation during the process of calling a new pastor. So in addition to beginning my duties as a pastor among you, I have been spending these first few weeks observing, listening, and getting a feel for the history, the people, and the life and

ministry of GA. What fun this has been! I am also beginning to work with a nine-person Transition Team whose initial task will be to conduct an in-depth assessment of GA in preparation for completing a very detailed document called a Ministry Site Profile (a necessary step before actually seeking pastor candidates). In order to do their work well, this Transition Team will be offering you, the members of GA, opportunities to speak and be heard about your experiences, your hopes, and your dreams for the future of this faith community. Perhaps that is enough to share in this article, but I will continue, in the weeks and months ahead, to keep you posted on my specialized role with you. Most of all, I am grateful to God for the opportunity to live and serve among you in this time of

transition.

What is Fellowship?

Loaves and Fishes is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. It started in January, 1982 during an economic downturn when Assumption Catholic Church in St. Paul and St. Stephens Catholic Church in Minneapolis found hungry people lining up on their steps asking for food. New sites were added during the years and in October, 1988, Faith Lutheran Church in St. Paul was opened as an additional site. On October 24, 1988, Gustavus Adolphus served its first meal. In October we will have served 144 meals. Loaves and Fishes has never

Fellowship with one another is what we like to think the church is. After all, most people

like to keep up with their friends and look forward to seeing them every week to catch up on and share the latest news, whether it’s the triumphs, or the hardships. Evangelism on the other hand is what the church does. Each of us practices Evangelism. In our daily activities even if we are not aware of it, by what we do for others.

I’d like to report that the Transition Team is moving along nicely with Pr. Phil’s guidance and we will continue to keep you posted as their work continues in our search for an associate pastor. Keep the work they do in your prayers.

Another item I would like you to save the date for is our Habitat for Humanity Build scheduled for August 13 – 17. Habitat for Humanity helps build decent, affordable housing for people who, through a lot of sweat equity, may not otherwise be able to afford a home. This will be our second year of sponsoring a build with Thrivent and Habitat for Humanity. This year we will be at 730 E Geranium. You may sign up for one day, two days, or all week if you prefer. If you want to be a part of this event please let me know as soon as possible. We will be looking for 15-18 volunteers per day who are 16 & older, as well as monetary donations or sponsorships of lunches for the crew.

been a budgeted item for our church and is funded through the special monthly envelopes, memorials and donations. In the early 1990's the number of people served each evening in the Twin Cities dropped a bit but is again rising. There are currently 10 sites in the Twin Cities. In April our church served 196 hungry people.

GA serves again Monday, June 25. We cook, serve and clean up the meal and volunteers are needed for every job. Please watch the bulletin in late June for more information and PLEASE consider joining the wonderful group who volunteer for

this important ministry.
