How many times have you heard someone say something like, “Well they make all of the decisions.” or, “They said it had to be this

way.” or anything that passes the decision making process on to other people? We often say these statements when we are referring

to our government, schools, work places, etc., when we feel powerless to be part of the decision making process. Do you know that

people even say that about churches and even specifically about our church – Centerville Baptist Church?

“They” is really You! The reality is that every member of this church has just as much input, power, and responsibility for every

decision that is made here as every other member, including the pastors. We have a true congregational form of government or polity.

That means that every church member can vote in our church conferences that take place every other month (February, April, June,

August, October, December) on the third Sunday – except we usually move the December meeting to the second Sunday – right after

worship. A book of reports is published a week before the Church Conference to help everyone understand the issues that are going

on in our church.

Always welcome. Some decisions about church building usage and other things that do not involve financial decisions can happen in

our Church Council meetings. These meetings take place every second Sunday of the month at 6:30 pm – except May because of

Mother’s day. Mostly we introduce ideas and align calendars at Church Council. Even though the official council is made of all church

staff, officers, committee chairs and ministry team leaders, everyone is welcome to attend a church council meeting.

If I don’t make the decisions, then I am not responsible. Sometimes people feel that if they do not get involved in the decision

making process, then they don’t feel as responsible for what goes on in the church. That may be true from a personal understanding,

but it is not true from a reality perspective. By not showing up, not being willing to discuss, not voting, and being uneducated on the

reasons for decisions, you are basically saying, “Whatever you decide is fine with me!” In many ways you lose the right to criticize the

decisions, but as part of the church body, you are still responsible to support those decisions through word and deed, as well as

financially.

Blessings of involvement. It is not easy to be involved in the decision making process of a church. We are not always going to agree

on everything. But, I do believe this church works very diligently to make sure everyone is heard. When you get involved and

understand why and when things are happening in our church, then you get the blessings of seeing God’s Kingdom breaking out and

knowing that you are part of it. When you are engaging the life of Centerville Baptist Church, even if you do not work with children, you

can know that when the children get up to sing in worship that you are a part of that wonderful event. When the staff is empowered to

reach out to hurting families because of sickness and death, you are going with us. When the AA groups meet, they feel your support

every week.

God is doing some amazing Kingdom work here. I hope you are part of it through your involvement and support. Don’t let

“They” get all the fun and blessings.

In Christ’s Love, Pastor Kevin

‘S Many of us share a passion to see our church minister to youth. It has been a frequent

topic of conversation in the seven and a half years I’ve been at Centerville. I share your concern,

and I’m excited for the opportunities I’ve had to share Christ’s love with youth here.

Allow me to share my views on the state of our youth ministry (grades sixth through

twelfth). Take this for what it is—one person’s perspective. It is, however, the perspective of a

staff person who has coordinated the youth program the last several years, who continues to

lend support to youth leadership, whose wife is the team leader, and, perhaps most of all, who is

the parent of two youth.

I’ll begin with really good news and then offer a challenge. The good news is that I believe

our youth program is experiencing terrific momentum right now. Considering pure numbers—

which is never my final measurement—we took our largest group to any mission camp in my time

at Centerville. Seventeen youth and four adults participated in our April Mission Madness trip.

This followed a winter lock-in which included twenty-two youth, including several youth which I

had just met that night. More importantly than simply the numbers, our youth are forming

meaningful bonds of friendship, community, and faith. Veteran CBC youth are showing a

deepening spiritual maturity and identity while newer youth are being drawn in by the

experiences of faith, fellowship, and service they witness. Enthusiasm and buy-in are high.

Committed lay leadership is, in my opinion, a major contributing factor to this momentum.

In addition to the many adults who connect with youth in informal ways, we have formed a core

team of about a half a dozen adults who regularly invest in youth events. Above and beyond

that, we have wonderful examples of intergenerational ministry such as our worship leaders who

weekly involve youth in praise and other elements of our Sunday service.

The state of our youth ministry is strong, but we do face significant challenges to our

momentum. First of all, while our lay-led youth team is robust, we are losing key leaders. In the

fall, Wil Taylor, who served our youth ministry significantly for almost a year, started attending a

different church with his new girlfriend, now fiancée. Secondly, Lydia Lusby, along with husband,

Jeremiah, and Carrie Maxwell, along with her husband Eric and their five children (three of which

are youth), are moving out of state in the next few months.

(Continued )

Each of these three individuals, along with their families, have not only tremendously blessed our

church, but they have also been key ministers in our youth programs. While we can never replace the

unique gifts and personalities they have brought, we certainly will need to find ways to fill the

personnel gap they leave.

Secondly, while it’s wonderful that we are sending larger numbers of youth to mission camps, it

is creating a financial burden. Traditionally, Centerville pays for half the cost of a mission camp a

youth participates in and the entire cost for an adult chaperone. Moreover, it will provide additional

assistance for families who need more help. More participants and annual increases in camp prices

push the limits of what we have raised and budgeted. This is felt by our Youth Team leaders who

coordinate not only Mission Madness, but also Passport, our week-long camp, as well as by the WMU

which sends both children and youth to Crossroads, another week-long camp. We need wide support

from the church and community in all of our upcoming fundraisers: a Mother’s Day morning bake

sale, May 12 for Crossroads children, a June 1 car wash for Passport and Crossroads youth, and

a fall baked goods auction to ensure we have money for 2020 camps.

While we try to use fundraiser funds for our camps, we rely on our general budget for most of

our other youth activities. This is where I make a plea which extends beyond our youth ministry. If we

really believe that Centerville has a stake in ministering to our community—youth as well as all other

ages—then we must maintain healthy general funds through regular giving. We have big goals,

including the possibility of an additional staff person to provide oversight for all of our children’s and

youth ministries, but even to build on our current momentum in smaller increments, it is important that

we strive to match our annual budget.

Again, I thank God and you all for the exciting things happening with my boys, their friends, and

numerous other wonderful young people! Would you please prayerfully consider how you might help

to extend this good work? As always, serve and support where you are called. Whether this is in

youth ministry or in any other capacity, I’m always glad to talk.

Lunchtime Bible Study

Do you want to keep celebrating the Easter message that Christ is Risen? Do you need a spiritual midweek pick-me-up? Can you spare thirty minutes on one or more Wednesdays to connect with God and others this spring?

I invite CBC Preschool Parents, folks on lunchbreaks, homemakers, retirees, and anyone else who’s available to join me for Jesus Live!, an intergenerational experience of worship, Bible study, and creative reflection on Jesus’ post-Easter appearances. Each week, we’ll look at a different story around Jesus’ resurrection, imagining what it would be like to be the people in the story and what it means for us now.

Bring a bag lunch, a Bible, or simply an open and willing heart to share with us from 12:15-12:45 on any or all of the following dates:

May 1, 8, 15, 22, 29, and June 5.

We’ll meet at Centerville Baptist (rooms 202/ 204). Children are encouraged to come, so please bring your little ones! Interested or have questions?

The Community Garden team is winding up to

full swing for the summer growing season!

Rows have been plowed and are ready. We are

so excited that the request for a well was approved and we are well on our way to

making that happen in the near future. With that in mind, we have irrigation lines to

run even before we can plant. The garden team is excited to be participating in C2C

day on May 4when we will be fielding several opportunities for interested individuals

to help us get a start on our growing season and tend to and update the 'Bug Hotel’

that we hope will attract ‘good insects’ to the garden.

Many hands make light work. We invite anyone with even a passing interest in

gardens or growing plants to come out and spend so time with us. Also, when

harvest starts, we would love to have some helpers. When we do harvest, we need

people who might be interested in making sure the harvest gets to those who can

use and distribute the produce.

Please text/call Judy Speas at 757-620-2867 or email to [email protected] if

you have any interest in getting some good healthy sunshine and great fellowship.

One day a week – one day a month. It is all for God’s glory and for those who need.

God Bless, Judy Speas

Financial Report:

At the February Church conference, a motion was

passed to amend the 2019 Unified budget to add

funding for a Minister of Youth and Children provided

congregational giving was at $264,686 by June 30th.

This amount has congregational giving at budgeted levels with an additional $8,000

for funding of salary for the position. Since approval of the motion, congregational

giving has not increased. Giving is on pace to be $72,000 below our approved budget

of $513,372. Weekly tithes and offerings need to increase by 22% for the remainder

of 2019 to achieve our budgeted income. The Stewardship and Finance Committee

recognizes that not everyone is able to increase giving by that amount but we are

asking all members and attendees to prayerfully consider a sacrificial increase in

giving. Unless we start to see a significant increase in giving; not only will we not be

able to fund the Minister of Youth and Children position, we will need to consider

making cuts in the following areas: programs, facilities and maintenance as well as

current staffing.

Update on Funds from McPherson Bequest:

We have had 2 expenditures from this donation:

$40,000 for the new roof on the Old Sanctuary

$15,300.29 for payoff to Fjord Construction for Sanctuary Renovation

Stewardship and Finance has also approved $6,278 from the Garden Team for all

items necessary to install a well to provide water to the community garden.

With violent attacks happening in churches, mosques and synagogues around our country and around the world at what seems like unprecedented levels, it is normal to ask some questions about how safe is it to worship at Centerville Baptist Church. These concerns are also compounded by numerous accounts of sexual violence/assault towards children and women in church settings. So, let’s take a look at what we have in place and what we can improve upon.

First, it is important to know that we have already taken steps that put us in the top 20% of churches in the United States as far as being prepared for a violent attack during worship/Sunday school time. These initial steps include:

1) Simply being aware that it might happen 2) Training people to be ready and to keep up awareness. 3) Limiting entry points to the facility and monitoring all entry points to make sure they remain

locked. This has been frustrating for a few people, but it is important to note that given the number of volunteers we have and the size of our building, this is one of the most important guidelines we have in place.

Second, we have had multiple guidelines in place for years that help protect our children from being taken advantage of:

1) Background checks for anyone with key fob access to the building while children are present. 2) Teachers/childcare workers are not to be alone with or just with a relative while with children. 3) Name tags for children and parents, so the correct person picks up the correct child.

In discussions with our insurance representative, we were told that we need to also implement: 4) Background checks renewed every 3 years (nearly accomplished). 5) Annual training to recognize signs of child abuse for all children’s workers: paid and volunteer. 6) Asking that all children 8 years of age and/or in the second grade or below be

accompanied by an adult in the church hallways and worship areas. If a child is found wandering alone, our ushers/greeters will escort them to their parents or the proper classroom.

A few people have expressed the idea that the best way to deter violence is by having armed security on the premises. This is not an option that we choose because of cost for extra insurance and for actually paying the trained personnel. Also, many of the guidelines we are working toward are very efficient in deterring violent acts. The state law allows for people with conceal and carry permits to carry weapons into places of worship only if they have a “good and sufficient reason.” Personal safety may count as that, but we ask that anyone with conceal carry permit that feels they have a good and sufficient reason to carry a weapon into the building during worship times, to please let the pastor know you are carrying. That way, someone in the church will be aware of who should and should not have a weapon on property. Centerville Baptist Church does not ask or desire that anyone on the safety team, usher and greeter team, or any other person employed by or volunteering for the church carry a weapon as part of their duties to the church.

We are blessed to have a congregation that includes former police officers, sheriff’s deputies, and military personnel that have been trained well in their former duties and can help us be safe. With our Preschool and Extended Care, we are also blessed in being ahead of the curve in safety for children because we have to process that every weekday. Nothing is ever guaranteed, but please know that we are working to make Centerville Baptist Church as safe as possible. Please help us by encouraging the folks that are spending hours working on these issues (Ushers and Greeters Team, Children’s Ministry Team, Staff) and by working hard yourself to follow these guidelines.
