the proposal
Creative ways to pop the big questionHave you found the woman you want to
spend the rest of your life with? The first step in making a lifelong commit-
ment is popping the question. Need an idea forproposing in a different way?
Here are some suggestions:¤Take her to a fancy restaurant. When it’s
time for dessert, get the waiter to deliver thedessert with flowers and a special noteattached. Then take out the engagement ringand propose.¤Take her on a walk in a park or at the
beach. Stop at an area where you previouslyspelled out “will you marry me?” in rocks orseashells. Immediately get down on your kneeand propose.¤Place an ad on the radio or in the newspa-
per and follow up with a personal proposal.
¤Videotape yourself asking her to marryyou. After a romantic meal that you cooked orhad catered, say you want to watch an oldvideotape of yours. Follow up by giving her thering.¤While on an airplane together, ask the
pilot to deliver your “will you marry me”announcement aboard the plane once you areairborne. Then give her the ring.¤Take her to a Chinese restaurant and
when it comes time for the fortune cookie, lether open up a special one that contains anengagement ring and a proposal.¤Have a scavenger hunt with clues. The last
clue ends up with you proposing to her.¤If both of you like the outdoors, propose to
her on the summit of a mountain or next to aserene body of water.
¤For a fairytale engagement, propose to herat Walt Disney World near Cinderella’s castleor somewhere similar.¤If it is her birthday or another special
occasion, wrap the ring in consecutively largerboxes. When she opens the final box, propose.¤If it is December, ask her to help you deco-
rate your Christmas tree. Hand her an orna-ment with an engagement ring attached.¤At the stroke of midnight on New Year’s
Eve, have the engagement ring ready and askher to marry you.¤Take her on a horsedrawn carriage ride
and pop the question.¤Wrap the diamond engagement ring
around the base of a candle then have herlight the candles before a very romantic dinnerfor two.
If you don’t want a formalchurch wedding, you canmarry at city hall in a simpleservice.
First, decide on a date. Then call city hall and ask toschedule your marriage cere-mony. They can usually fityou in within a few days.
Find out how many guests
you’re allowed to bring.Sometimes there may be alimit. Also, ask if there areany special requirements.
Be sure to allow enoughtime to have a valid marriagelicense ready before theevent.
Remember to take thelicense with you to city hall.
This is important becauseyou can’t be married withoutit.
Take proof of your identifi-cation, such as a birth certifi-cate or driver’s license, incase you need it.
Consider incorporating tra-dition into your ceremony byincluding something old,
something new, somethingborrowed and somethingblue.
Purchase wedding bands toexchange during the vows. And select a special outfit foreach of you.
Lastly, take a camera andhave someone take picturesof your special day.
For a simple service, marry at local city hall

the budget
Wedding should not put you in the redThe question has been asked and a “yes”
answer given. Now it’s time to start planning the wed-
ding. The best way to work out a wedding budg-
et is to sit down with pencil, paper and acalculator to figure out what you really wantand can afford.
You should start by prioritizing what’simportant to you. You may decide that youwant to have an amazing photographer, butyou’re happy to hunt for a bargain on thedress.
If you’re having a small wedding, yourcatering bill won’t be as big as big as a per-centage of the budget.
You can adjust your budget numbers toreflect your priorities.
You can save money many ways. Start bylooking through the budget and crossing offanything that you don’t need.
And don’t be afraid to ask recently mar-ried friends who they used and what theypaid.
Here are some money-saving tips:¤Trim your wedding guest list. Each time
you add a name to your invitation list, you’re increasing your budget significantly. It’s not just the catering costs, but also theextra centerpieces, favors, rentals, etc.
Don’t invite anyone you haven’t talked toin five years. Don’t feel obligated to let sin-
gle people bring a date.Avoid feeling pressured to invite all your
co-workers. And you don’t have to let friendsbring children.¤Invitations. Find a good printer. The
invitation is the first thing guests see that’sconnected to your wedding, so they shouldlook nice, but you don’t have to go overboard.People will remember the event, not theinvitation.
You can forgo the inner envelope and blot-ter paper, which are leftover from timeswhen ink needed time to dry and peoplewanted a pristine envelope.
Rather than having a reply card, askguests to reply online or by phone. Not onlywill you save money from the printer bill, but you will also reduce your postageexpense.¤Save money on church decorations. For
religious weddings, consider having it near amajor holiday.
The church will already be decorated, sav-ing you lots of money on flowers.
On other days, look for simplicity. A can-dlelight ceremony can be romantic, gorgeousand inexpensive.¤Reception venue. Saturday night is the
most sought-after time. If you can do a Fri-day night, Saturday morning or afternoon orSunday reception, you’ll not only save mon-ey, but you may have more choice of dates.
¤Transportation. Consider finding afriend with a nice car and using it.¤Flowers. If there’s time, have a friend
get them at the local greenmarket on wed-ding morning and set them up at the cere-mony and reception sites yourself, with thehelp of family and friends.¤Caterer. Along with the menu, discuss
the cost of service, liquor, wedding cake, overtime and insurance when you meet withprospective caterers.
Consider that a brunch, luncheon or horsd’oeuvres reception costs less than a dinner.¤Music. DJs tend to be less expensive
than live bands.¤Do it yourself. Throw a pitch-in party
where guests help you assemble favors andmake invitations, centerpieces and otherhomemade items.
WEDDING FUN FACT: Badweather on the way to the wed-
ding is believed to signifyunhappiness in the marriage.
Traditionally, it is believedthat cloudy skies and wind enroute to the wedding will
result in a stormy marriage. However, if there is snow on the way to
the wedding, that is a sign of fertility andprosperity.

the cake
Dream up your own sweet concoctionA delicious part of the reception
is the wedding cake. Today, cou-ples are limited only by their cre-ativity.
How do you go about finding agood baker to make yourcake?
Word of mouth is the bestway. Ask everyone — family, friends, neighbors, co-work-ers, the reception site coor-dinator, the photographer, the florist. They may havesome good suggestions foryou.
Make appointmentswith several differentbakers. The baker willneed to know approxi-mately how many people youare expecting and the colors ofyour wedding.
Look through bridal books andcake magazines and cut out pic-tures of the types of cakes youlike. Take them when you meetwith your baker.
Some questions to ask potentialbakers are:¤Can I see photos of previous
wedding cakes you have designed? This is essential. If the baker
won’t show you photographs, lookelsewhere.¤Can I have a taste test? Many
small bakers won’t have sampleson hand for you to taste. If your
baker doesn’t have any foryou to taste at the time ofyour visit, ask if the bakerwill be hosting any “cake
tastings” in the near future.¤Do you charge extra
for anything such as spe-cial fillings or icings, deliv-
ery, set-up, etc.? Extracharges for these items
are pretty standard, butyou need to know upfront for the sake of
your budget.¤Will you decorate the
cake with fresh or silk flowers orwill you work with my florist? ¤Unless the baker’s floral deco-
rating skills are excellent, askyour baker if your florist can han-dle silk or fresh flower decora-tions.¤How far in advance will the
cake be prepared? If the cake isbeing prepared well in advanceand frozen, ask the baker howlong it will take the cake to thaw.
The color of the cake is veryimportant. Be sure you takeswatches of the bridal dresseswith you and if possible, pho-tographs of the flowers youhave chosen.
This way, the cakedesigner can take an ordi-nary white cake and dec-orate it with flowers, fresh fruit, colorful icingor use colored frostingsuch as brown, yellow, orange, pink or whatev-er color you like. Justimagine offering yourguests a lemon cake with yellowicing, accented with fresh fruitand chocolate mousse.
After choosing the flavor, color, size and shape of your weddingcake, you need to determine whatlevel of involvement the cakedesigner will have.
For example, for some recep-tions where the wedding cake isthe only dessert served, you mightconsider having them serve theguests.
On the other hand, if you will behaving multiple desserts and areon a budget, then you could ask a
close friend or family member tohelp serve the guests. Regardless, just be sure you have all the
details for the designer’s rolein the written contract.
Be clear about the date, time and location of the
wedding and reception.Make sure that the
cake can be delivered ata time convenient toyou or whomever youwill have to receiveand inspect the cake.
There should be awritten contract with the
wedding cake baker to specify thesize, shape, flavor, color, decora-tions, delivery day, delivery time, delivery place and price of wed-ding cake.
Such a contract, of course, doesnot need a special form or alawyer to draw it up. It can be asimple list with this information. The list should be dated andsigned by both the baker and you,and you should each have a copy.
Many wedding cake bakers havetheir own form for such orders
See Sweet concoction on 7
because it is as important to them that youremember exactly what you asked for and don’tremember asking for something that you nevermentioned as it is to you that they deliverwhat you did ask for.
The new trends in wedding cakes allowbrides to have a cake that not only looks good, but tastes good, too. Brides don’t need to settlefor the traditional white vanilla cake with theplastic bride and groom on top any more.
From fruit cake to cheesecake, icing to ice-cream, there are many decisions to make whenit comes to choosing a wedding cake to suityou, your fiancé and your guests.
Take a glance at the following tips to devisethe delicious wedding cake you deserve.¤Have a multi-flavored cake. This is a great
option if you can’t decide between one flavor oranother, or if you want to give your guests aselection of cakes to choose from. If you will behaving three layers of cake, you could have alayer of mud cake, a layer of vanilla cake and alayer of rainbow cake, something for everyone!¤For some extra flavor, have a wedding cake
with filling. Talk to your baker about having afilling made of white or dark chocolate, straw-berry, mocha or preserves.¤What about using a modern type of icing?
While the traditional soft white icing is stillvery popular, white chocolate icing would be a
delicious, and surprising, alter-native.¤Have a wedding cake
with an unusual shape. Onevery popular style is to havea wedding cake that resem-bles a stack of presents. Thisis a fun cake and general-ly has two or more squarelayers, is heavily decorat-ed and tied with a bow.¤For a modern-look-
ing wedding cake, thinkabout having your layersmade in different shapes. For example, asquare layer, a heart shaped layer and anhexagonal layer would make your cake modernindeed.¤If your wedding will be having a color
scheme, decorate your cake to suit. If your colorscheme will be rose pink, you could cover yourcake with small, romantic, pink rosebuds, either real or made of icing.¤For a special touch, talk to your baker
about using some of the detail on your weddingdress to make decorations for your cake. If youtake a picture of your dress to your bakery, thebaker should be able to copy some of the lace, beading or other decorations from your dressonto your wedding cake.¤Get sentimental. Copy the cake top your
grandparents or parents used at their wedding.
To make your parents feel extra special, servethem the first slices of cake you cut yourself, before it is taken to the kitchen to be cut and
served to your guests.¤Personalize your cake by having yours andthe groom’s initials intertwined in icing on
your cake as decoration.¤Have a wedding cake with a special
meaning. For example, if you have been toFrance together, you may like to have a
croquembouche. This is the traditionalFrench wedding cake, a yummy tower ofcream-filled pastry.¤You may like to follow a special wed-
ding cake tradition practiced in Bermuda. Withthis tradition, a tiny green tree is used as a caketopper. After the wedding, the bride and groomcan plant the tree in their garden and watch itgrow, as their marriage does.¤Add some accompaniments to your cake for
your extra sweet-toothed guests. Chocolates, fruit, sugared almonds or lilies can be placed onyour guests’ plates for a decorative touch.¤Another trendy look is a wedding cake deco-
rated with fresh flowers. Some favorites includeroses, carnations and pansies. These flowers canbe made into cascade designs or other styles.
For a simply stunning look, have one single, perfect, bloom on your cake, such as a lily ororchid.
Using fresh flowers to decorate your cakelooks great and need not cost a fortune.

the gown
Pick the dress that’s perfect for youYou’ve set the date for your big day and have
begun planning the wedding. One of the most important things to a bride is
her gown. She wants to look stylish and chic.Trends change from year to year. One of the
biggest trends in wedding gowns is the flowingsilhouette.
These gowns have loose billowy skirts withflowing fabric that create a dreamy quality. Many of the wedding gowns that have flowingsilhouettes also feature a dropwaist, which cre-ates the illusion of a longer torso.
These gowns are not only beautiful and ele-gant, they are also very comfortable. Brideswho choose wedding gowns with flowing sil-houettes will be perfectly dressed for a destina-tion wedding, an outdoor wedding or a casualaffair.
Another popular style is the fit and flaregown. Fitted bodices with flared skirts aremaking a comeback in wedding gowns.
Unlike the trends of past seasons, weddinggown fashions have moved away from the ball-gown look of a fitted bodice with a full roundedskirt and instead are bringing a fresh lookwith a fitted bodice and skirt with a flaredhemline.
Mermaid hemlines, bubble skirts and trum-pet skirts are all prevalent in wedding gowndesigners’ latest collections. Tiered skirts areanother fresh look and featured tiers of lace, chiffon and other lightweight fabrics.
Brides who wear gowns with fabric tieredskirts will add a touch of whimsy to their wed-ding.
Another hot look for wedding gowns is thesweetheart neckline. A sweetheart neckline isshaped like the top of a heart — a detail thatis inherently charming and romantic. Thesweetheart neckline adds something differentto the bodice of wedding gowns because it givesa curvy and interesting shape.
Sweetheart necklines can be complimentedby almost any type of sleeve, but on the wed-ding runway, they are most often paired withsleeveless gowns and A-line or flared skirts. For brides that want to give their weddinggown a romantic flourish, a sweetheart neck-line is just the thing.
Brides are also making a fashion statementwith fabric. Instead of a strong prevalence ofbeading, rhinestones or other accents, fabric isthe method du jour for adding detail to wed-ding gowns. Gowns now have a wide range offabric embellishments, from delicate draping tomore dramatic ruffles and fabric flowers. Ruf-fles, ribbon, ruching, gathering, pleats, fabricflowers and draping are all popular details forwedding gowns.
As the bride at your wedding, you are thestar of the show and all eyes will be on you.Your wedding gown is a reflection of your per-sonal style so create a modern look by choosinga wedding gown that has the latest updates.

Groom will stand out with the right lookAlthough the bride will definite-
ly be the center of attention onher wedding day, the groom wantsto look his best, too.
Here is help.Start early and you’ll not only
save yourself some stress, you’llreduce your chances of overpaying— or even worse, settling forsomething unfabulous.
In this case, early means four orfive months before your wedding.Decide whether to rent or buy, andcheck out different styles. Makeyour final decision three or fourmonths before the big day.
Ask your bride for her opinion.Gone are the days when groomssurprise their brides with funkyor frumpy formalwear. Before youcommit to any tux, talk to thebride early on so that you cancoordinate your wedding looks.
The time and location of yourwedding — as well as the size ofyour guest list — will affect yourchoice of attire. These things deter-mine the formality of your affair, and you won’t want to make thefaux pas of wearing ultra-formal for-malwear to an informal event, espe-cially when it’s your wedding.
Different types of weddings callfor different types of formalwear. The clothing you wear will dependlargely on the time and location ofyour event, the size of the guestlist and the bride’s attire. Usethese general guidelines to matchyour look to the mood of your wed-ding.
Semiformal, daytime Both the groom and his grooms-
men should skip the tuxes and optfor suits (navy or charcoal aregreat year-round; reserve khaki orwhite for warm seasons). Choose awhite shirt worn either with orwithout a tie.
Semiformal, evening Go with a dark tuxedo and bow
tie, worn with a cummerbund orvest. Another option is a nice darksuit. Either way, the shirt shouldbe white with a wing or turned-down collar.
For summer weddings or tropi-cal locales, white dinner jacketsare an acceptable option.
Formal, daytime There are lots of choices: Tuxe-
dos, tailcoats and gray strollersare all appropriate. Match themwith a white spread-collar shirt, a
vest to match your coat, an ascotor a regular necktie, and a pocketsquare if you’re feeling particular-ly dapper.
Formal, evening It’s time to break out the black-
tie. You’ll be wearing a classicblack tuxedo with a white wing orspread-collar shirt, black bow tie,and matching vest or cummer-bund.
Formal four-in-hand ties (akafancy takes on the standard neck-tie) are a more contemporaryoption for the fashion-forwardgroom. And if your wedding fallsduring the summer, feel free todon a white dinner jacket withformal trousers.
Ultraformal, daytime Think cutaway coat, gray
striped trousers, gray vest, ascot, and black shoes. If you want to goall out, you can also add a top hat, spats, and gray gloves.
Ultraformal, evening Break out the white tie. That
means a black tailcoat, blacktrousers, white pique wing-col-lared shirt, black vest or cummer-bund, and white bow tie.

Look for the best tux cut for yourbody type.
Tall and thinYou can wear just about any-
thing, from contemporary styles —like single-breasted four-buttonjackets — to a more classic, double-breasted tuxedo with broad shoul-ders.
If you’re extremely thin and wantto look bulkier, opt for the latter; itwill pad your chest slightly and fillout your torso. One caveat: Makesure your trouser legs and jacketarms are long enough.
Tall and husky, muscularGo for a smooth, clean look with-
out a lot of frills. A shawl collar (amore rounded lapel than a peakcollar) will create an elegant linethat will make you seem less bulky.
Avoid double-breasted jacketsand pleated shirts, which add vol-ume. If you have a large waist, con-sider wearing a vest instead of acummerbund, since cummerbundsdraw attention to the waist, whilevests conceal girth.
Keep in mind that black has aslimming effect, which makes the
classic tux perfect for you. You’llprobably find that white suits,light-colored suits (such as tan orseersucker), morning suits and tailsare not your most flattering looks.
And if you’re extremely muscular,be aware of sizing, especiallyaround your neck. You don’t wantto feel like your bow tie is stran-gling you.
Short and slimAvoid styles that look too large
on your frame. Steer clear of dou-ble-breasted jackets. Instead, go fora two- or three-button jacket with alow-button stance (it elongates thebody), paired with classic tuxedopants or pleated trousers.
If you want to look a bit broader, ask your tailor for extra shoulderpadding. When sizing your tux orsuit, make sure everything fits pre-cisely so you don't end up swim-ming in yards of extra material.
Short and broadStick with a single-breasted jack-
et. Go for a classic two- or one-but-ton jacket with a low-button stanceand a shawl collar, which will keepyour look streamlined and slim.
Also, choose a jacket with a natu-ral shoulder line, and avoid the
more broad European styles. If youhave a heavy waist, choose a vestrather than a cummerbund to drawattention away from your waistlineand up toward your face.
And once again, remember thatblack has a slimming effect, whichmakes the classic tux perfect foryou. When it comes to sizing, makesure your jacket and trousers fitwell. When you button your jacket, the material near the buttonsshouldn’t pull. Your trousers shouldfit comfortably around your waist.
Whether you rent or buy, makesure that your formalwear providergives you a proper fitting andknows how to measure yourinseam, waist, and jacket size. Payattention not only to what looksgood but also to what feels good.Fabrics these days are morebreathable than in years past, andit’s possible to achieve the look youwant and wear a tux that moveswith you instead of one that weighsyou down.
Keeping all this in mind, thegroom should stand out at the wed-ding, too.

Give the groom the right look WEDDINGFUN FACT:For centuriesthe month ofJune hasbeen the mostpopularchoice forweddings, butthe original
reason for havingit then might justsurprise you.
During the 1400sand1500s, May wasthe month in whichthe “annual bath”
occurred.Back in those
times, peoplewere only able to
bathe thoroughly once eachyear.
Since the over-all popula-tion was smelling relativelyfresh in June, it was a goodtime to hold a special eventlike a wedding.
Furthermore, the month ofJune is also named after thegoddess Juno.

WEDDING FUN FACT: It is held that a final lookin the mirror right before the bride leaves herhome for the ceremony will bring good luck.
However, if she looks in a mirror once againbefore the ceremony, her luck will tarnish to bad.

the ring
Pick the perfect ring for your special dayHe has decided he cannot live without you
and wants to marry you. After he pops thequestion, you need to go shopping for weddingrings.
What kind do you get? What do you need tolook for in a ring? How much should youspend?
These are all important questions to consid-er when buying a ring.
The first thing to do is set a budget. A gener-al guide is to set aside 3 percent of your wed-ding budget for rings.
The price will vary depending on what metalyou choose and if you want extras like dia-monds or custom embellishments.
Rings come in several different materials. The most common for wedding rings are gold, white gold, platinum and titanium. Gold, whitegold and platinum are traditional, but titani-um can be a good substitute if you’re allergicto certain metals or if you’re looking for a low-er-priced alternative.
Different metals will also complement yourskin tone differently. Try on wedding rings in arange of materials so you can see which metallooks best on you.
When you first go shopping for the ring, check out a couple different stores before buy-ing. Compare selection and price at a fewstores and determine which has the right ringfor you.
Start shopping for your wedding rings at
least two months before your weddngdate. If you want something specific oryou’re interested in custom featureslike engraving, start shopping fourmonths before your wedding date.
Here are six current trends in wed-ding rings:¤Neutral-colored gems.Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck’s
relationship might not have lasted, butthe lure of colored engagement ringssure did. Her 6.1-carat pink diamondengagement ring set the stage for abevy of other colorful gemstones likeberyl, sapphires and rubies to take aleading role.¤Diamonds all around.A gorgeous diamond gets lots of
character from its surroundings. And the cur-rent styles drizzled with diamonds are defi-nitely a hit among brides and designersalike.
Not only do the extra diamonds add tons ofsparkle, but they can enhance the size or atleast give the illusion of a larger center stone. What bride-to-be (and groom, too) wouldn’tlove that? ¤Intricately raised settings. The newest ring settings are really raising
the bar — elaborate and more importantly, lofty designs are hot. There’s nothing like adelicately draped bow or precision-cut mold to
give your center stone the spotlight.¤Twisted bands.Designers have opted to put a little more
swing in their rings. From swirling diamondbands to more streamlined metal twists, bridesare enamored with this smooth move.¤Vintage glamour.Heirloom styles, though rich in history, are
definitely not a tired idea. Think intricate set-tings with metal and diamond detailing.¤Eco-friendly rings. These dazzling designers prove that it’s hip
to have more than just a green thumb. Deco-rate your ring finger with conflict-free dia-monds and recycled gold settings.

Who sits where at your ceremony? Hereare some guidelines to help you with thisdetail.
Since your ushers will escort guests totheir seats, it’s not necessary to haveassigned seating.
However, you will want to section off areserved seating area in front for yourimmediate families.
Traditionally in church weddings, thebride’s parents sit in the front row on theleft side, along with her grandparentsand siblings.
If the bride’s parents are divorced andprefer to sit separately, the mother andher husband might sit in the front rowwhile the father and his wife sit in thesecond row.
Other special relatives may sit in thesecond and third rows.
The groom’s family is seated in thesame manner, but on the right side of theroom. (At Jewish ceremonies, all the seat-ing is reversed.)
An usher should offer a female guesthis right arm to escort her to her seat.Male wedding guests may simply be ledto their seats.
When a number of wedding guestsarrive at once, seat the eldest ones first.
In what order doyour guests sit?

the invitation
Show off your style with the invitationsYour personality and individual style show
in every detail of your wedding event, from thedress, the flowers and the cake right down tothe favors.
And your wedding invitations will be the onepiece of correspondence responsible for settingthe mood for this entire event.
Your invitation designer can work with youto create an invitation masterpiece with per-sonal touches that will make it uniquely yours.
Don’t forget to carry this theme through toyour insert cards, matching Website, weddingprograms, and even your thank you notes.Make every detail count.
Depending on the formality, time, and host-ing of your wedding, you will see there are avariety of ways to word your invitation.
The formal wedding invitation includes theinvitation, an outside envelope, a receptioncard, an RSVP card, an RSVP envelope, direc-tions to the church and reception, informationon accommodations for out-of-town guests andthank you cards.
Formal invitations give you a line to write inthe guest name, are very plain and areengraved or have raised print (called thermo-graph).
Most formals also have a raised border andblack ink type.
Addressing each card to a guest can be apain; however, it adds a person touch. Thepaper is very plain with little to no detail and
is printed on white or ivory paper. And eventhough engraved print is nice, use thermo-graph print if you are on a budget.
Using thermograph instead of engravedprint is less expensive and has the look andfeel like the print was engraved.
Other options may be available by checkingwith experienced wedding stationery compa-nies.
Informal invitations vary in what it includeswith the card.
The shape, style, print, ink color and paper
vary. Informal invitations do not have a line towrite in the guest name and are usually not inengraved or have raised print.
Informal invitations are used to reflect thecouple personalities, styles, or theme of thewedding.
There are many styles to choose from bychecking with experienced wedding stationerycompanies under the invitation section in yourphone book or by using your own unique ideasand others’ ideas to design them yourself.
Tips on sending invitations¤Gather your lists of invitees before you
order the invitations.¤Order at least 25 more invitations and
envelopes than you think you will need to cov-er mistakes in addressing or re-mailing to acurrent address and to cover last-minute musthaves. It’s more expensive to re-order than toorder more than you need at the beginning.¤Type/print the list of names with the
appropriate titles: Mr., Mrs., Dr., Ms., Rev-erend, Captain, Lieutenant, Rabbi, Fr.,Messrs., Honorable, etc.¤If a widow: Mrs. John Smith; If divorced:
Mrs. Susan Smith.¤ For children over 18 and living at home,
they receive their own invitation or are list-ed separately on their parents’: Mr. and Mrs.John Cooksen, Ms. Melissa Rodgers.

beauty regimen
Beauty routine is part of the planningYou have set the date for your
wedding. Now you need to give serious
thought to your beauty regimenleading up to the big day.
Here is a beauty calendar:6 months ahead
¤If you want to color your hairfor your wedding, do it now. Sincecolor is applied every six weeks, abride needs to decide on a shadeat least three to six months ahead.
Allow yourself time to becomeaccustomed to the new look or cor-rect any mistake.¤Use an exfoliating facial scrub
twice a week to slough off deadskin for a healthy glow.
And try a hydrating mask oncea week for a great home facial.¤If you’re going to change your
haircut, do it at least threemonths before the wedding.
And don’t try something drasti-cally new just before the dateunless you’re very sure you wantthat style.
2 months ahead¤Wear rubber glove when work-
ing around the home to protecthands and nails in the weeksbefore the wedding.
Slather on hand cream as oftenas you can.¤To brighten your teeth for the
wedding day, ask your dentistabout these procedures — bond-ing, laminates and bleaching. Ortry some of the tooth whiteningproducts available in stores.¤Don’t try any new products or
makeup later than two monthsbefore the wedding.
Give your skin a chance toadjust or discover allergies rightaway.
1 month ahead¤Apply a nail-strengthening
cream daily as a conditioningtreatment.
Always keep your nails polishedor simply apply a clear top coat toprotect them from peeling andbreaking.¤Watch your weight while
attending pre-wedding festivities.
Most brides start planning fortheir big day months, if notyears, in advance. They growtheir hair out or they cut it short.
They wax their legs and bleachtheir teeth. They get weeklymanicures and pedicures formonths before the wedding justto insure that everything will beperfect.
No stone is left unturned. Or isit?
What about him? You know, that guy sitting next to the bride. He’s getting married, too.
And whether he says anythingor not, he probably wants to lookhis best for his wedding.
So here are some things youcan both do to make him feelgreat for his big day:¤Get him a manicure. The fact
is, real men do get manicures. You can assure him that they
don’t put polish on men’s fingers, but they do get all the dry skinand ragged cuticles taken care of.This is especially important ifyour man works with his hands
on a daily basis as his hands areprobably callused and rough. He’ll be shaking hands all day.¤Have him get a massage. You
can give him one yourself or thetwo of you can go somewheretogether to have them done.
This isn’t something that mostmen think to do on their own.Men have their own stresseswhen it comes to planning a wed-ding. They have their own emo-tions to work through as the bigday approaches.¤Involve him in some of your
healthy activities and eatinghabits. Even if your groom-to-beis in great shape already, goingfor walks together and eatinghealthy meals before the wed-ding will have real benefits.
If you’re trying to lose someweight or get in shape, havinghis support will be invaluable.Plus the time spent going forwalks and getting outdoors willgive the two of you a chance to

Don’t forget about license and attendants
He has popped the question and she hasaccepted. A date has been set for the bigday.
Now what? Before any couple can tie the knot, they
need one very important piece of paper —the marriage license.
In Wayne County, bridal couples shouldgo to the register of deeds office in thecourthouse to obtain the license. It willcost $50 and payment must be made bycash or check only.
Register of Deeds Lois J. Mooring saidthat both the bride and the groom have togo at the same time to apply for the mar-riage license.
Everyone applying for a license willneed their Social Security card or some-thing with the Social Security number andtheir name printed on it and a state-issued picture identification.
Those over 21 can use their driver’slicense as identification, said Ms. Mooring.
She said those 18 to 21 will need to takean identification card such as a driver’slicense or military identification card anda certified copy of their birth certificate.
Those under 18 will need to have moreidentification and should go to the register
of deeds office for a list of acceptable docu-ments.
Anyone who has been divorced less than30 days will have to take a copy of his orher divorce papers when applying for themarriage license. If a person has beendivorced a month or longer, he will justneed to know the month and year of thedivorce, according to Ms. Mooring.
The marriage license is good not only inWayne County, but anywhere in NorthCarolina. It’s good for up to 60 days fromthe date it was issued.
Ms. Mooring said it will take the coupleabout 30 minutes to fill out paperworkand get the license. “And there’s no wait-ing period; they can go straight to themagistrate’s office and use the license assoon as they get it,” she said.
Couples may apply for a marriagelicense Monday through Friday between 8a.m. and 4 p.m.
For questions, the phone number is 731-1449.
License requirements may also be foundon the Internet. Go to www.waynegov.comand click on “departments.” Go to the reg-ister of deeds office and click on “marriagelicense.”

WEDDING FUN FACT:According to an old legend, the
month in which you marry mayhave some bearing on the fate of the mar-riage:
Married when the year is new, he’ll be lov-ing, kind and true.
When February birds do mate, you wed nordread your fate.
If you wed when March winds blow, joyand sorrow both you’ll know.
Marry in April when you can, joy for Maid-en and for Man.
Marry in the month of May, and you’ll
surely rue the day.Marry when June roses grow, over land
and sea you will go.Those who in July do wed, must labor for
their daily bred.Whoever wed in August be, many a change
is sure to see.Marry in September’s shrine, your living
will be rich and fine;If in October you do marry, love will come
but riches tarry. If you wed in bleak November, only joys
will come, remember. When December snows fall fast, marry and
true love will last.

the music
Set the mood of wedding with music
The wedding music you choose foryour ceremony will set the tone foryour entire wedding. Remember toask your site what types of weddingmusic it allows — many churchesdo not allow secular music to beplayed and have very strict rulesabout what may be used.
Consult with the musical directorof your facility to be sure you createa program which is suitable andalso suits your own style.
During your prelude, you willwant to use wedding music which isnot obtrusive. This will be playedwhile your guests are arriving andtaking their seats. Start this musicas early as possible so that weddingmusic is playing when the firstguests arrive.
While important family members, such as the mother-of-the-bride, arebeing ushered to their seats, youwill need to choose a pre-procession-al.
When the wedding party appearsat the top of the aisle, the weddingmusic should switch from the pre-processional to the processional.
This piece should have a tempowhich allows your bridesmaids andgroomsmen to walk down the aisleat a measured pace and heightensthe suspense for the wedding guestsas they wait to see the bride.
When choosing wedding music, keep in mind how the piece beplayed. A piece that is perfect in fullorchestral form may not have thesame presence if performed by anorganist.
As soon as the bride appears atthe top of the aisle, the weddingmusic should switch to the piece youhave chosen for the bride’s entrance. This is the moment that you, andall your guests have been waitingfor.
Your wedding music should bedramatic and sweeping.
After you are pronounced hus-band and wife, your recessional willbegin. This is the moment in whichyou and your new spouse walkdown the aisle. You should choosewedding music that is joyous andconveys your feelings of excitementand happiness.
At the ceremonyMusic is the lifeblood of a recep-
tion. Without it, conversation driesup, mingling halts and dancing isan impossibility.
When planning the tunes foryour party, consider three primaryissues: Style, range and delivery.¤Style: Even the most agreeable
person has strong opinions aboutmusic, and the average engagedcouple is no exception. Is yourfavorite genre big band, country, classical, bluegrass or classic rock?Does nothing move you like reggae?
Choose music that reflects yourpersonal tastes and party prefer-ences, but don’t forget your guests.Everyone will have more fun if thestyle is at least a little eclectic.¤Range: If you’re like most cou-
ples, you imagine a certain kind ofsoundtrack for the receiving lineand a different one altogether forwhen the dance floor gets hopping.
Whatever style you choose, besure there’s range within it — fromslow and easy to really jumping.Alternately, choose different genresfor different parts of the celebration
— light jazz for the cocktail hour, swing for after dinner.¤Delivery: Basically, you have
two choices: Band or DJ. For styl-ishness, excitement and greatsound, it’s hard to beat a live band.
On the other hand, DJs make apretty good case for themselves interms of versatility, consistency andcost.
Your budget or setting may makethis decision for you. If the decisionis yours, try to weigh all the musi-cal elements of the reception whenmaking your choice — includingspecial dances, guest requests andthe need for an emcee.
When shopping for bands or DJs,be sure to see them in action atanother event. Look for style points, quality of sound, ease with equip-ment and interaction with thecrowd.
Plan to finalize arrangements atleast six to nine months in advanceand even further ahead if yourfavorite choice is in high demand.

survival tips
Be prepared and alleviate that tension
Even though you’veplanned for everythingto go perfectly, you neverknow what might hap-pen on your big day.
That’s why it’s a goodidea to assemble a sur-vival kit beforehand soyou’ll be prepared.
Here’s what youneed:¤antacid¤aspirin¤bobby pins¤clear nail polish¤emery board¤extra earring backs¤extra pair of stock-
ings¤eye drops¤hairspray¤hair mousse¤needle and thread¤safety pins¤small scissors¤straight pins¤tissues¤white chalk (to cover
any dirt or stains you
may get on your dress)¤breath mints¤a blow dryer¤extra perfume¤masking tape¤a stapler¤wash cloth or hand
towel¤tampons or pads
The survival kitWhen you’re stressed out about your wed-
ding, who has the time or the money to go toa spa? You need stress relief and you need itnow.
Here are some things you can do to chillout.¤Deep breathing. Lie down on the floor or
a quiet place and close your eyes. Inhaledeeply through your nose, letting air flowinto your stomach area.
Picture your body filling with peace as youinhale and the stress flowing out of you asyou exhale deeply. Let your mind clear, asyou focus on your body filling with air.
Repeat until your breathing is slow andrelaxed.¤Stretching. You’ve probably noticed your
body getting crunched up. Perhaps you haveaches or tension headaches. These are allsigns of your body holding onto that stress.
Take time to stretch, breathing deeply asyou do so. Yoga is a great way to stretch, de-stress and clear your mind.
An easy one is the “child’s pose.” Sit onyour feet and bend forward, trying to stretchyour spine and bring your forehead as closeto the floor as possible. Lay your arms atyour side as you close your eyes and breathdeeply.
¤Adjust your diet. When you’re stressedout, you’ll want to avoid caffeine, chocolateand alcohol — those foods that are easy toreach for, but only increase your stress level.Make sure to drink lots of water and try toeat more vegetables which will help keepyour system clear.¤Take time to enjoy peaceful surroundings
Go on a 10-minute walk in the middle of yourday to appreciate nature and architecture.Avoid thinking about anything weddingrelated, and instead focus on what you’re see-ing and how nice it feels to be outside. You’llcome back in far more able to deal withwhat’s going on.¤Massage. Neck and shoulder massages
can relieve tension. You can also apply hot orcold packs to these areas of the body.¤Think. Recall the sound, feel, sight, taste
and smell of pleasant things. Use guidedimagery to conjure up specific pictures suchas the beauty of a sunset.¤Relax. Tighten a group of muscles and
hold them in extreme tension for a few sec-onds. Then, relax the muscles while focusingon releasing tension or stress. Start withmuscles in the toes and feet, working yourway up to the muscles in the neck and head.¤Sleep. Maintain a regular sleep schedule.
Here’s how to relieve your stress
The food that is served at yourwedding reception will be some-thing your guests will talk aboutand remember.
One sure way to please them isto satisfy their hunger and sweettooth with a delicious, well-planned menu.
You’re going to want one thatcomes highly recommended and ispleasant to work with.
These caterers are popular, sobook them as soon as you have seta wedding date and have madethe decision to hire them.
Wedding caterers usually havephotos of previous wedding recep-tions they’ve worked.
This will give you an idea ofhow organized they are and howyou may want your own servingtables arranged. Get the details inwriting.
Ask them for a price sheet thatlists the entrees they offer and theprices. Take one home so you canbegin planning your menu.
Make sure the price quotes giv-en to you early on are in the finalcontract you sign.
Here are some things to consid-er when hiring a wedding caterer:
¤Is their location near?¤How is the food transported?¤Are additional cooking facili-
ties needed at the reception site?¤Is the food prepared from
fresh ingredients, or frozen?¤Who keeps the leftovers?¤Do they bring servers?¤Are they licensed by the
state?¤Do they provide additional
decorations?¤How much deposit must be
paid?¤When is the balance due?¤How are the charges calculat-
ed? Per person? Per plate?¤Are tips included in the fees? You can save money by serving
a sit-down luncheon in lieu of afancy dinner.
Order food that is in season andeasy to obtain.
Enlist your family and friendsto help with setting up, servingand clean up. Ask the caterer ifyou’re allowed to bring some ofyour own entrees, condiments ordesserts to help cut costs.
Find out if the caterer providestableware, linens, utensils and thecake table. If so, what are the
additional charges? If you think you can get these
items cheaper somewhere else, consider paying a little extra andletting them handle it.
Less hassle will probably beworth the cost.
Make sure you tell the catererhow many guests you will beexpecting by the date given.
If there is any significantchange, you can get back to thembefore final preparations aremade.
Give them several contact phonenumbers and get the same infor-mation from them. The more pre-pared you are, the less likely youare to call them for emergencypurposes.

the flowers
Dress up your wedding with flowersYou are planning your wedding and have
come to the bouquet. There are several stylesfrom which to choose.¤Hand-tied bouquet. It’s an assortment of
flowers tied with a pretty ribbon.¤Arm bouquet. It’s an arrangement of long-
stemmed flowers, often roses or calla lilies, tiedloosely with a ribbon or bow and cradled inone arm. Sometimes it’s a single, perfectbloom.¤Bledermeier bouquet. It’s concentric circles
with different flowers or different colors of thesame flower in each circle.¤Pav bouquet. It’s a tight cluster of blooms
that may include one type of flower in the samecolor or related colors or several different vari-eties of flowers.¤Pomander bouquet. It’s a ball of flowers
made by inserting stems into a globe-shapedbase suspended from a looped ribbon. The rib-bon can be held or slipped over the wrist.¤Free-form bouquet. It’s a loose grouping of
flowers that often has blossoms and greenerycoming out a various angles.¤Cascade bouquet. It’s a large, tear-shaped
arrangement of flowers, full at the top anddropping into tendrils at the bottom, spillinggracefully downward.
The bride, of course, will be the focal point ofthe wedding ceremony. But the church andreception hall also need to be decorated with
flowers of yourchoosing.
Before youchoose a florist,ask relatives,friends and co-workers for rec-ommendations.You might alsotry a bridalshow and vieweach florist’sportfolio.
This will giveyou a chance tostudy theirtechnique with-out having toschedule ameeting. It will
also help rule out any of the possibilities thatdon’t meet your taste. Choose two or three dif-ferent florists to meet and discuss ideas withand be sure to get all estimates in writing.
According to the industry, the average floralbill estimates to be between $800 and $3,000,so you want to make sure you’re getting themost for your money, and that the work isquality.
After you choose a florist, you’ll need to takea few key items to help in choosing the typesof arrangements and bouquets that will com-
pliment your style.Know your theme and color scheme. Take
things such as a picture of your gown andbridesmaid dresses or swatches of the fabric tobetter match colors.
Take magazine clippings of styles thatcaught your eye and a list of “who needs what”such as bouquets for bridesmaids, bouton-nieres, corsages and centerpieces.

Flowers and their meaning
One of the best parts about get-ting married is registering for giftsat your favorite store.
This task isn’t just left to thebride anymore. The groom shouldtake part so the decisions can bemade together as a couple.
If you’re just setting up a newhousehold, there’s plenty you’regoing to need. Start with the basicsby registering tableware, crystal, sheets, towels and small appli-ances.
Where to register¤All major department stores.¤Building supply stores such as
Lowe’s and Home Depot.¤Hardware stores.¤Sporting goods stores.¤Gardening stores or local nurs-
eries.¤Mortgage lenders — register-
ing for contributions to a downpayment on a house is becomingpopular.¤Travel agents — whether for
the honeymoon or another trip.¤Home furnishing and accessory
stores.¤Online registries.Here are 10 questions to ask
before you register:¤Do you need an appointment?¤What is the store’s return poli-
cy?¤How easy is it to return
things?¤How does the store keep track
of your registry and gifts? A com-puter database is the preferredmethod as it is the most quicklyupdated.¤How often does the store
update the registry and gift? ¤How long does it take to get
your gift registry up and running?¤Does the store have a toll-free
phone number?¤Does the store accept phone
purchases?¤Does the store have a Website?¤Does the store ship gifts? Any
additional charge for this service?¤How long does your registry
list stay in the records? A year
after the wedding date is the ideal, since guests have up to one year topurchase a gift for you.
Most department stores willhave a consultant available to helpand guide you with gift selectionsin various price ranges.
Registering at two or threestores is considered ideal and willgive your guests a choice on whereto shop for your wedding gift.
Trust a reputable store and aconsultant who is pleasant andwilling to explain everything in-depth.
This is a free service from thestore and they will benefit fromyour business — so make sure youand your family are comfortablewith the atmosphere and employ-ees.
If the store’s policies are accept-able, plan a meeting with the con-sultant that will take about one totwo hours.
When to registerSince you’ll be receiving gifts for
showers and parties, you shouldregister your preferences shortlyafter you announce your engage-ment. You don’t have to go to mul-tiple stores right away, just choosea simple one to begin with, so yourfriends and family can get yousomething on your list if they needgift ideas.
When you sign up for a registry,
tell your family andattendants where youregistered so they cantell your guests whenasked about gift ideas. Ifyou have a weddingWebsite, add a page orsection advising peoplewhere you have regis-tered your gift prefer-ences.
While you shouldn’tinclude bridal registryinformation on weddinginvitations, it’s accept-able to print them at thebottom of shower invita-tions.
This is one way to be subtle —and your guests may decide to pickout your wedding gift when shop-ping for a shower gift, saving themtime.
Here are some examples of whatto register for:¤House accessories and gadgets¤Kitchen stuff¤China ¤Crystal¤Silver¤Sporting goods¤Linens¤Wines
¤Home improvements¤Garden supplies¤Mortgage down payments¤Honeymoons¤Vacation travel¤House cleaning servicesHere are some dos and don’ts
when registering:¤Do realize that just because
you’ve registered for it doesn’tmean you’ll get it.¤Do register for enough gifts
with respect to your wedding list.If you’ve invited 300 people, makesure and register for that manygifts.¤Do register at a wide variety of
locations that all your guests willhave access to.¤Do complete the registration
process by the time you send outyour invitation. It’s also perfectlyacceptable to register earlier sothat early shoppers or showerguests can have access to the infor-mation.¤Do keep track of every gift you
receive and who gave it to you. Youwill need this later for writingthank-you notes.

destination wedding
Getting married at an out-of-town spotOne of the most watched trends in weddings
today is that of the “destination wedding.”They account for a whopping 10 percent of
all weddings among American or Canadiancouples.
This is pretty significant because just 10years ago, the term “destination wedding” wasvirtually unheard of. And there’s no reason toexpect a cooling down of this trend any timesoon. In fact, it’s just gaining speed.
What is it?Destination wedding essentially means
“eloping with a crowd.” It’s a modern version ofeloping.
When a couple eloped in the past, they ranoff alone together. Now they may still run offto get married, but they take their closest fam-ily members and friends with them to share inthe celebration.
Why is it hot?Because it appeals both to those who want to
run away and get married somewhere exotic,as well as to couples who want to share a real-ly memorable wedding experience with thepeople closest to them.
Couples are grabbing hold of this ideabecause, instead of having just one day to cele-brate their nuptials with their favorite people, they have several days of quality time togeth-er.
Compare this with the traditional wedding, where oftentimes the day speeds by in a whirl-wind and the couple has only fleeting momentsto spend with individual guests and you startto see the appeal of the destination wedding.
Another reason for the destination weddingtrend is that remarriages now account for 50percent of marriages in the US and Canada. While a conventional or traditional wedding isperfectly acceptable for a remarriage today ifthat’s what the couple wants, some couples
prefer something a little more low key or qui-et, with just the people closest to them inattendance. The destination wedding is perfectfor this.
And the Internet makes the world a muchsmaller place. Through online research, youcan explore geographic locations, tour resortsand hotels, read menus, look at cakes and viewexamples of a photographer’s work or a hair-stylist’s updos.
Planning a wedding from afar is no longerthe scary and risky proposition it once was.You can make contact with resorts and ven-dors, including wedding coordinators, in thedestination of choice via e-mail, and haveinformation, price lists and contracts sent backto you in a matter of moments.
How many guests? You can invite as many or as few people as
you want to your destination wedding. Justkeep one thing in mind: There are likely to bepeople on your guest list who will be unableto attend due to the expense involved or thelogistics of arranging a jaunt away fromhome.
People have limited vacation time, theymay need significant lead time to book theirvacations or they may not be able to arrangeto be away from home on the dates you’veselected for a wide variety of other reasons.

destination wedding
Destination weddings Also keep in mind that your idea of
the dream destination may not matchtheirs, so if you are expecting them topay their own way, they many not bewilling to invest their limited vacationbudget into the vacation of your choice.
Research requiredBefore you get your heart set on any
specific destination wedding plan, itssuper-important to do your researchand determine whether what youhave in mind is feasible.
Not only do you need to investigatecosts, but you will also need to care-fully determine what the require-ments and regulations are in regardto saying your “I dos” in the destina-tion of your choice.
Some countries only allow citizensto marry on their soil; others mayhave a residency requirement where-by you have to live in the country for30 days, 6 months, or a year beforeyou are eligible to marry there.
You’ll also be required to providevarious forms of documentation inorder to marry in another country, and you need to know what specificdocumentation is required for the
country in question.Who pays?
There is no rule of etiquette thatrequires the couple to pay for guests’travel and accommodation expenses;however, it is certainly hospitable ofyou, and a real treat for your guests ifyou can cover some or all of their costs.
Some couples do this, others do not.If possible, you might consider cover-
ing a portion of your guests expenses, say, just their airfare or just theiraccommodations. The couple is, howev-er, responsible for covering the accom-modation expenses of their bridal atten-dants — the bridesmaids, groomsmenand honor attendants.
If your budget is tight, keep this inmind before selecting your attendantsand perhaps limit yourself to just onehonor attendant on each side.
If using a travel agent, try to find onethat specializes in destination weddingsif possible, as she’ll have experience innot simply arranging your air traveland accommodations, but also some ofthe other details and logistics. The keyto success in planning a destinationwedding is to start as early as possible.

pre-wedding party get togeth-er. They are easy to plan.
For showers, it is a goodidea to purchase a gift thatthe couple may not purchasethemselves.
When planning a shower, make sure the theme coordi-nates with the couple’s styles.
Here are some popularbridal shower themes:¤Through the months. The
months of the year are dis-tributed to the guests andthey buy a gift that will coor-dinate or represent themonths. For example, forNovember purchase turkeydishes and utensils.¤The four seasons. Each
season is given and the giftcoordinates with the season. For example, for summer buybeach towels.¤Around-the-clock. Each
hour of the day is given to aguest and the gift will coordi-nate with that hour. Forexample, for 8 a.m. purchasebreakfast trays for breakfastin bed.¤Name the room. Each
room of the house is distrib-uted (bathroom, kitchen, bed-room, study, etc.).¤Gift certificate. For the
person who is hard to buy for, guest can get gift certificatesto their favorite stores, restau-rants or activities.¤Electronic. This theme
involves gifts from a I-podand CD players to DVD play-ers and computer accessories.¤Holiday. This involves
either one or more holidaysand the gifts surround thisidea. Christmas is especially afun one to do.¤Hardware. The men real-
ly enjoy this one. The giftrange is from screwdriversand hammers to lawnmowersand workbenches.¤Athletic and fitness. For
the physically fit group, thesegifts may be weights and ten-nis balls to step benches andbaseball bats.¤Over the years. This is
when the guests buy any giftfor the bride and groom andalso give a little somethingthey have received over theyears.

the photographer
Wedding will be remembered in picturesHow will you remember your wedding and
reception? Of course you’ll have the memo-ries locked away in your mind, but they won’tbe as vivid as photographs and a video of thebig event.
It’s important to remember that the pho-tographer you choose will be responsible forcapturing the moments and memories ofwhat may be the most important day of yourlife.
With this in mind, you’ll want to take greatcare in selecting a wedding photographerconsidering there are no second chances.
As you might imagine, wedding photogra-phy is one of the most challenging types ofprofessional photography.
With that in mind, you will want to select awedding photographer who has the skills andexperience to make everyone look beautifuland who is able to produce beautiful work ina multitude of locations, in all kinds ofweather conditions, in a minimum amount oftime.
At the same time, your photographershould have the personality to complementyou on your most joyous day.
Remember, you will be interacting withthis person all day under what will mostlikely be stressful conditions.
In addition, your photographer will beinteracting extensively with your friends, family and members of your wedding party.
Take your time and follow some of thesesimple suggestions, and you will most cer-tainly be satisfied with the outcome.
Where do you Begin?Personal referrals or asking friends, rela-
tives and co-workers for suggestions is a greatplace to start.
Typically, people who have had positiveexperiences with photographers are more thanwilling to share that information.
In addition, you’ll already have some insightabout the photographer’s personality beforeyou actually meet.
After compiling a preliminary list, visit eachphotographer’s web site and thoughtfullyreview his or her online portfolio. If a portfoliolooks appealing you, chances are, that photog-rapher might be a good fit.
Next, call or e-mail each photographer onyour list.
Through this initial contact, you can deter-mine the photographer’s availability, the typeof work they specialize in (candid or tradition-al) as well as an estimate of the cost and thepackage you will receive for that fee.
Schedule appointments with the photogra-phers who seem most appropriate and ask toview their portfolios in person and discussmore details.
Ask each of them to show you a completeportfolio of a single wedding — this will give
you a much clearer sense of what you canexpect than a collection of choice shots fromseveral different events.
Pay attention to whether the photographeris adept at portraying individual expressionsand personalities.
Ideally, these meetings should include thebride and groom as well as the bride’s parentssince you will all be interacting with the pho-tographer.
What questions should you ask?Be sure to write down all of your questions
beforehand, and take thorough notes duringthe meetings. Although most professional pho-tographers will provide you with a clear out-line of their services and fees prior to yourmeeting, you will, in all likelihood, still have alarge number of questions to ask.
Remember, the more information you have, the more confident and relaxed you’ll feel onyour special day. The following are some ques-tions you may wish to consider asking:¤How will you show me pictures for selec-
tion (electronic, proofs, contact sheets, onlinegallery, etc.)? ¤Will you help me choose the final pictures? ¤How will you make it easy for friends and
family to order reprints? ¤What are the costs of the various levels

of coverage? ¤Are there different degrees of coverage? ¤What is your photography style; photojour-
nalistic, traditional, mixed, etc.? ¤How much for the duplicate prints, albums,
folios, enlargements, etc.? ¤What’s your time frame for preparing the
pictures for my selection? ¤How about an engagement session? ¤How long do I have to make up my mind as
to which pictures I want and how many? ¤How long have you been in business? ¤What kind of guarantee comes with my
hiring you? ¤What’s your philosophy for photographing
weddings? ¤Will you have an assistant? ¤Do you have travel fees? ¤How much is your overtime fee? ¤What do you plan to do at my wedding to
make my wedding photographs unique andpersonal to me? ¤Do you have a backup? ¤Will you be shooting my pictures personal-
ly? ¤Will you use film or digital? ¤What’s your payment policy? ¤Do you give any guarantees on your servic-
es and photographs? ¤What is the possibility of the pictures fading?
¤How much will it cost? The following are some points that will help
prepare you for what you might expect to payfor your wedding photography:¤Plan to allocate a significant portion of
your wedding budget to ensure photographsare perfect. Expect to spend at least $1,000 ona professional wedding photographer to docu-ment your event.
Albums and prints are usually extra. Otherextras that may increase your bottom lineinclude additional hours, additional photogra-phers, custom albums etc. etc. Add on too manyextras — and your photography budget couldquickly creep to $5,000 and beyond! ¤Cut the extras and purchase a basic wed-
ding photography package from a skilled pho-tographer. By paying for the photographer’sexpertise only, you will ensure great images —and you’ll buy yourself some time to save upfor the custom album and prints after the wed-ding.¤Get the proofs. To that end, try to find a
photographer who will let you keep the proofs. Many photographers consider themselves to bephotographers only — artists not in the busi-ness of selling photographs.
After the big day, they’ll hand over yourproofs and be on their way. They’re yours tokeep — you can print them in any manner youplease or save them for printing after you’vesaved up some cash.
¤Enter the digital age with digital photogra-phy. It’s less costly than film, and with techno-logical advances in equipment — digitalimages are no longer a sacrifice in quality. Many photographers have taken the digitalplunge — which results in savings for you.¤Cut the timeline. The longer your event,
the more it will cost to document it. Since pho-tographers often charge based on the numberof hours they will spend at your wedding, ashorter/smaller wedding celebration will yieldbig savings in your photography budget.
Making a commitment At this point, you should have a relatively
clear idea of which photographer is best suitedto capture your wedding day memories.
Once you have made a decision, be preparedto leave a deposit to reserve the date. You maystill wish to reassure yourself by asking abouta few final details.
For example, find out what the photograph-er’s policy for wedding-date changes is andwhat the alternatives are if he or she is notavailable on the backup date.
Also, ask about their policy for an unexpect-ed cancellation. If you feel the photographer isright for you, then relax and make the commit-ment with the confidence that you’ve made awell-formed, intelligent decision in planningthe most important day of your life.

Put changing name, rehearsal on your list
For thosebridesplanningto taketheir hus-band’s lastname afterthe wedding, there arecertain docu-ments thatmust be change.
Many can bedone now.
Some agencies willrequire a copy of themarriage licensebefore processing thechange.

Update these itemsThe rehearsal dinner is an important part
of the wedding festivities. It provides thebride and the groom with one last time to sitdown with the wedding party before the bigday.
In addition, it is a time to express gratitudeto everyone that has been involved with theplanning of the wedding.
It can be casual or formal, depending on thetaste and desire of the bride and the groom.Either way, there are a few things to keep inmind when planning and hosting the rehears-al dinner.
The wedding rehearsal dinner can helpreduce pre-wedding jitters and allow all mem-bers of the wedding party to reduce a littlestress the night before.
It is not just the bride and groom who arefeeling the exhausting effects of stress. Allmembers of the wedding party can get toknow each other and enjoy a night out.
A rehearsal dinner is traditionally held aday or two before a wedding. Most commonly,it occurs the night before the wedding. Therehearsal dinner should follow immediatelyafter the rehearsal with the bridal party.
The rehearsal dinner is a dress rehearsal ofthe wedding. Any wedding rehearsal dinnerwill only include the bride and groom’s par-
ents and those in the wedding. This includes the bridesmaids, matron of
honor, best man, ushers, reverend/priest/jus-tice of peace, flower girl and ring bearer. Noone else should be invited to the weddingrehearsal dinner.
Traditionally, the groom’s parents pay forthe wedding rehearsal dinner and cocktails.Invitations are not necessary, usually word ofmouth will suffice.
The wedding rehearsal dinner usually con-sists of drinks before dinner while the restau-rant does the last-minute check of therequested banquet room. The dinner is thenserved with a round of toasts to the bride-to-be and the groom-to-be.
The evening ends with dessert, coffee andconversation. If expense is an issue, thegroom’s parents can opt to hold a buffet din-ner or ask the restaurant for a group ratemenu.
If the wedding is to take place on the dayafter the rehearsal dinner, it is an excellentidea to keep the rehearsal dinner low key. Thelast thing anyone wants is to have the bride, groom and/or wedding party late for the bigday because they had too much to drink thenight before.
