Happy Hour Book/Video Discussion

“Saying Yes” Discovering and Responding to

God’s Will in your Life

By Albert Haase, OFM

Starts Monday, September 10th - 3:00 to 4:30 PM in Guadalupe Room

This discussion series has 6 sessions to it and will run for 6 consecutive weeks. In his book

and companion video Albert Haase, OFM, has provided a blueprint and roadmap for

discovering all the places, all the spaces, and all the faces through which God speaks to us.

Discerning God’s will is an ongoing process—not a static, one time decision. What is God

asking of me? How do I know if this is really God and not simply my imagination? Should

I follow my head or my heart? Haase offers a faithful and faith filled reflection on both the

simplicity and the complexity of Christian discernment and discipleship. Albert Hasse is a

scholar of Christian spirituality and is a spiritual mentor of hundreds of people, is known for

his clear, practical spiritual advice. He is a popular mission speaker, teacher, spiritual director

and radio show guest and author of nine books. You loved the last discussion we had on one

of his books and he has only gotten better!

The book Saying Yes is $10 and is available in the parish office for purchase.

The graces of Jesus' redemption are outside of time and space. Mary is conceived

without original sin. In the feast of the Assumption, we celebrate the result of that

reality! Mary's soul and body are not separated at the moment of death, nor does

her body decay. She is brought up, body and soul, into Heaven. Even in apostolic

times, no religious site has claimed the actual body of Mary. Considering the

Church's enthusiasm for relics, this is a startling fact! After Christianity became

legal in the Roman Empire, the site of her empty tomb became a place of local

pilgrimage. On this feast, we remember that just as Jesus has taken care of his

mother, he will take care of us!

The church has always held to the belief that Mary was assumed, body and soul,

into a heavenly state, even though the belief was not declared as dogmatic until

1950. The early church had a robust tradition of revering relics from the saints of

the day, and their complete lack of relics from the Mother of Jesus was seen as

evidence of this Marian belief. The celebration of the event as a feast dates back

to the fourth century in the East and the seventh century in the West.

Since Mary was untouched by the stain of sin, she was unable to experience the

"wages of sin," which is death. But her Assumption also says something about

humanity as well. Sin only has power over us if we allow it. Mary was freed from

this power in her Immaculate Conception, and when she responded "yes" to God.

We were freed from that power when Jesus died and rose, conquering death. Now,

we must respond "yes" to claim the victory that was already won for us. On this

feast, we should not only celebrate the great works God has done for us through

Our Lady, but also celebrate the truth that we have the opportunity to one day

spend eternity with her and her Son, Jesus.

LIBRARY UPDATE

If you are inclined to stay indoors and watch movies

during the hot summer we have many for you to choose.

Guide to Faithful Citizenship – A Matter of

Conscience (Specialties) Presented by Franciscan

Media and St. Anthony Messenger Press with funding

from the US Conference of Catholic Bishops this film

answers some questions such as: How do we know who

the right candidate is? What issues are most important?

How do we weigh the pros and cons? T here is an

accompanying guide, too.

Bernadette from Ignatius Press (Biographies) Her

vision became a legend and is a thrilling story of spiritu-

al conviction and faith. It tells of the apparitions of Our

Lady of Lourdes in 1858.

Bakhita – from Slave to Saint (Biography) This is

the story of a young girl born in Sudan, kidnapped, beat-

en, and sold into slavery. Overcoming great adversary

Bakhita became a nun and in 2000 Pope John Paul II

declared her a saint.

One Night with the King (Specialties) Star r ing Peter

O’Toole, Omar Sharif, and others this is the epic story

of Hadassah, the young Jewish orphan who became the

biblical Esther, Queen of Persia.

The Priests – in Concert at Armagh Cathedral

such as: Panis Angelicus, Ave Maria, Be Still My Soul,

and an Irish Blessing.

Making the Case for Life – How to Talk About

America’s Toughest Issue (Specialties) No matter

what, talking with friends and family about abortion too

often winds up at one extreme or the other. This video

helps us learn how to employ empathy to break down

defenses and defuse hostility. There are three foolproof

approaches that will make even the most hardened pro-

choicer listen to what you have to say.

SOCIETY OF ST. VINCENT DE PAUL

The St. Vincent DePaul Society,

St. Elizabeth Seton Conference,

would like to express our SINCERE

APPRECIATION to all the

parishioners and contributors to our

monthly shoebox collection, food drive and other

contributions throughout the months.

For the months of April, May and June 2018 your

generous contributions have helped the needy in our

conference with rent, utilities, food and other basic

needs. We had 78 home visits and served over 212

individuals from these visits. We were able to pay rent,

utilities and other basic needs for these clients in the

amount of $20,245.00. We delivered 272 bags of food

to these families. Our members volunteered over 1700

hours of their time to serve the less fortunate of our

community.

During July we provided 105 Walmart gift cards with

a value of $50.00 so that students of our clients could

purchase Back to School supplies. These cards could

only be used for the purchase of school supplies and

they were special cards only for that purpose. We

spent

$5, 250.00 on these cards for children that may not

have been able to purchase the basic needs of going

back to school.

Our members have found that being a member of

St. Vincent DePaul gives great pleasure of serving God

and helping the less fortunate of our community.

If you would like to see what our ministry is about, feel

free to call 623-583-7303 and we will be glad to dis-

cuss our Ministry with you.

Again, thank you for your generous contributions to the

St. Vincent DePaul Society.

The Knights of Columbus present “One of

these Nights” the Eagles Tribute Band in

Concert. The date is October 13th in Seton

Hall. Doors open at 6:00 PM. The show will

start at 7:00 PM.

Children’s Liturgy of the Word

Begins September 2nd!

During the 11 o’clock Mass on Sunday, children ages 5 through 3rd grade are invited to leave the assembly to hear the Sunday Gospel simplified for them. The volunteer adults will direct them across the courtyard to the Fatima Room and will lead them in prayer, songs, and the Gospel reading of the day. After discussing the main message of the Gospel the children will receive a gospel booklet to color and share with their family after mass. Their liturgy will end with a child’s creed and they will be guided back to the church to rejoin their families for the Eucharistic celebration! No pre-registration is necessary and all students are welcome. A parent is welcome to join their child if desired to help their child adjust to the separation. For questions or to volunteer please call Linda at the number above.

Be baptized. Be Catholic (children baptized in another denomination must make a Profes-sion of Faith). Have the ability to recognize the difference between right and wrong. Have the capacity for sincere sorrow and be properly instructed.

“Children must go to the sacrament of Confession before receiving Holy Communion for the first time.“

Catechism of the Catholic Church # 1457

CHILD or YOUTH READINESS Children, according to their age and capacity,

are to be considered ready to celebrate their

First Confession when there is: an awareness

that God loves them, they participate regularly in

Sunday Mass, and prayer is a part of the child’s

life and also experienced within their family.

They need to be growing in their ability to

distinguish between accidents and the right and

wrong choices they make. Children should have

the capacity for sincere sorrow and the ability to

change their actions and the ability to express

sorrow for sin. They need to understand that

relationships with God and others can be broken

through sin. The child or youth needs to under-

stand that the Sacrament of Penance and Recon-

ciliation is a special sign of God’s forgiveness.

When can my child receive the Sacrament of Confession?

A candidate must be at the age of discretion for sacramental

preparation, seven years of age or above, attended at least one year of faith formation, and must meet the

following requirements:
