We formed the group ‘Enterprise Data and Analytics’ group within President’s Office – UITS last year with the goal of consolidating UITS data and analytics professionals working on the Summit platform to better assist in delivery of data and analytics services to UMass as a whole. This is a small but talented group of seasoned professionals that make Summit possible. One our first priorities is to take a more holistic look at the Summit program and re-imagine it for the future. This effort continues and will be expanded to include input from many of you in the next year. Summit 2.0 has come out of this effort and provides the framework for using our existing data and analytics assets while repositioning them to better serve UMass’ needs in this area for the future.

The terms “reporting” and “Business Intelligence” or “BI” are used less and less and are antiquated. The term “analytics” is a much better term to describe the practice of using data to drive insights. It can take different forms: Description Analytics Use reports, interactive dashboards, and/or data visualization to describe ‘WHAT HAPPENED?’ Example: How has the yield rate for admissions changed over time? Diagnostic Analytics Use Descriptive analytics and statistical inference to establish cause for ‘WHY DID IT HAPPEN?’ Example: Why is the yield rate decreasing this year? Predictive Analytics Use statistical models to predict ‘WHAT MAY HAPPEN’ Example: Which applicants are likely not to enroll after being admitted? This doesn’t mean Summit will satisfy ALL of the university’s needs in this area: campuses may need to have additional solutions to meet all their needs. But when the solution is available within Summit, it is a resource that should be considered first.

None of this would be possible without data. The Summit Enterprise Data Warehouse continues to grow. It is a massive collection of cleansed data optimized for analysis. While Finance, HR, and Student (Boston, Dartmouth, and Lowell) are its largest subject areas, we are continuing to bring in more data into the EDW. Additionally, another goal for Summit 2.0 is to make access to other data sources easier. This will significantly cut back on the time it takes to be able to answer questions requiring data that is not in the warehouse.

Oracle Business Intelligence (OBIEE) and Tableau are now available as part of Summit. Other tools can also be used by analysts. Additionally, we can support advanced analytics tools such as R, Python, SAS, SPSS, …. There is a lot overlap between the capabilities of OBIEE and Tableau but each also bring unique features. For example, advanced data visualizations and access to disparate data sources including spreadsheets are easier with Tableau, while large deployments and department row level security is better done with OBIEE. Drop us a note to find out which would work better for you. And look for more polished guidelines in the future to make this decision.

Multiple campuses have purchased HelioCampus products. HelioCampus provides a platform for analytics with pre-packaged Tableau visualizations along with programs to load data from PeopleSoft and external sources. They also provide the ability to build custom content. There has been some confusion about how Summit Tableau and HelioCampus Tableau instances are different and when should one be used over another. This slide attempts to address that question with some specific criteria.
