Dear College Prep Parent,

Summer is a great time for your child to practice what s/he has learned throughout the school year. There is no better activity for your child than to engage in reading, writing, and math for the summer months of June and July. Not only will your child discover the joy of being lost in a book, but s/he will practice the many skills and strategies s/he has learned all year.

Teachers and other educators identify summer learning loss as a major challenge when starting off the new school year. However, students who read over the summer return to school ready to continue learning with little or no learning loss. On average, students regress (backslide) one full grade level in reading if they don’t read over the summer. Imagine all of that hard work and dedication lost.

The great news is that IDEA Public Schools has established SummerBoost to combat this with the support of an at-home summer education guide -- this playbook!

Your child was sent home with this playbook with engaging, fun activities that help prevent the summer learning loss referenced above. One of the key elements for this home component is completing the Power Hour at home with the playbook. The Power Hour is simple, your child simply engages in a minimum of 20 minutes of Reading, 20 minutes of Writing, and 20 minutes of Math every day over the summer from June 1 through August 9, the eve of the first day of school.

Summer learning is meant to be enjoyable and we do not want students to have to struggle. We want reading, writing, and math to be fun and exciting.

The enclosed playbook includes: required reading lists, open response journals, math activities and more.

Sincerely,

Summer BOOST T eam

Atentamente,

Summer BOOST T eam

EVALUATING ALGEBRAIC EXPRESSIONS

An algebraic expression is a mathematical phrase consisting of variables, numbers and operations.

To evaluate algebraic expressions, replace the variable with a number.

An equation is a mathematical sentence which shows that two expressions or values are equal.

Think of an equation as a balance scale.

Solve the equation to find the value of the variable that makes the equation true. The value of the variable is called the solution.
