MGM 2nd Anniversary Special Edition

Two Years of Memories and the Start of New Beginnings By: Corey Sipe

In this edition of The ROAR newsletter, we look back on the past two years of the MGM Grand at Foxwoods and look forward to new beginnings. We reflect on the past by offering a photo collage of construction of the MGM, a timeline of important events and people leading us to where we are today and photos of the 2nd Anniversary celebration. When looking back two years ago, I remember when we had orientation in the Premiere Ballroom at 8 a.m. Some of us were still half-asleep when Glenn Potter’s enthusiasm and excitement woke us up with a Conga line! I remember when all of the MGM Marketing Representatives sat in the Center Bar plush seating and we picked numbers out of a hat. Each representative made their pick for the shift and days off based on what was important in their lives. In the end, we all had fun.

We have so many memories of MGM because after all, it is not just a building but a large work family where we spend more of our time on a weekly basis than with our own families!

The ROAR features several "firsts" including quotes from team members and customers who were with us opening night, photos of the first Casino Marketing Department, first MGM Grand at Foxwoods team, the first concert in the MGM Grand Theater, and two MGM team members who recently had their first child. Other first's include our first issue of a new The ROAR one-column format, the first promotions that happened to team members here at the MGM Grand at Foxwoods, a bachelorette party preparing the bride for her first day as someone's new wife, and a new call around list with several hotel chains with new locations in our area after the MGM Grand at Foxwoods opened. In fact, new beginnings are happening all the time. The Foxwoods Engineering Department recently completed its first large-scale totally in-house project when they renovated the Grand Pequot Tower’s Hampton Club High Limit Slot Area and VIP Lounge. The project increased the number of high-limit slots and the number of seats in the lounge. Likewise, in the Retail Department, the Candy Shell, featuring M&M products, opened June 11 in the former Insignia store along the Great Cedar Concourse. A mural on the side of the store shows the winning team of Foxwoods Resort Casino, MGM Grand at Foxwoods, Lake of Isles Golf Course and M&M. (Photo by Corey Sipe). Likewise, folks will soon use their luck and skill in bowling as work has already begun on the 35,000-square-foot High Rollers, a bowling and entertainment complex, which will include a 20-lane bowling alley with 8 billiard tables, innovative bar

menu created by award-winning chef Kevin Long, more than 50 big-screen HDTV’s, a two-level lounge with piano, fireplace, and a 50-seat custom marble bar. High Rollers will be located on the Grand Pequot Tower Mezzanine level next to Veranda Café. Similarly, laughter has not been forgotten for the future as Comix, a Manhattan-based comedy club, will open a 7,900-square-foot location in the former The Club. As we look to better serve our Asian customers, Fay Da, an Asian bakery, is poised to open across from Noodle Bar in the Rainmaker Square. Last but certainly not least, Kidstuff and Watchful Eye will soon be renovated.

The Mashantucket Pequot Gaming Enterprise, MPGE, comprising of Foxwoods Resort Casino and MGM Grand at Foxwoods, welcomes William Sherlock (Photo Courtesy of FoxNet), who served as President and CEO of Foxwoods from 2000 to 2006. He is the new Interim President as of June 7, 2010. Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation (MPTN) Chairman Rodney Butler noted, "The Council is pleased to be able to engage Mr. Sherlock as we enter an improving economic climate and an exciting and busy season at both Foxwoods and MGM Grand.”

During the June 9 All-Team Member Meeting, Mr. Sherlock expressed his desire to bring enthusiasm back to team members which will lead to better customer service, very vital during the recession and ever increasing competition. He expressed his enthusiasm about: the return of Legends in Concert t to the Fox Theater running until Sept. 5, the success generated by Titanic: The Artifact Exhibit in the Great Cedar Exhibition Hall which will run until Oct. 3; and the return of Cirque to the MGM Grand Theater with Cirque Jungle Fantasy Jul. 27 to Sept. 1. Let’s look back at our successes and move forward to the future because after all, we are the WONDER OF IT ALL!!!

What was your favorite opening day memory?

"The MGM Grand at Foxwoods team is very proud and excited to celebrate our second anniversary. We truly believe we have delivered a product, service and facility that is unmatched in the market. The MGM Grand at Foxwoods has been a complementary addition to the Mashantucket Pequot Gaming Enterprise and has allowed us to explore new markets while giving options to our current loyal Foxwoods Resort Casino patrons. Thank you to all of our MGM Grand at Foxwoods team members who have made this possible over the past 2 years!" - Jason Guyot, Executive Director Hotel Operations & Shared Services, Courtesy of FoxNet.

“I am proud of how service oriented our new team members were after being carefully selected and trained for the MGM Grand at Foxwoods. The smiles were contagious!” - Stephen E. Heise, Vice President of Human Resources.

“As we approached the night, the anticipation and excitement built. The team was ready, passionate, and engaged! When the night finally arrived you could feel "The Roar Next Door", from the opening of the doors! The crowd was massive, the ballrooms and grand events were amazing! The staff was nervous but determined to create Moments of Magic for each guest. It was an unbelievable and unforgettable special feeling. If you had the pleasure of working it, it was a night you will always remember. You planned hard for, it, worked hard during it and when it was over you look back on it and say, this is how it should be always!” - Glen D. Potter, Training Specialist III, Mashantucket Pequot Academy.

"I walked two guests over to Grand Pequot Casino from MGM about 30 minutes before the public opening. I will never forget the buzz of excitement and anticipation of the large group of uninvited guests that were waiting to enter the sky bridge entrance for the grand opening." - Tom McDonald, CAO Manager (was Cage Shift Manager on opening night)

"The MGM opening was so amazing. I was working security detail for the VIP Puff Daddy Event. At one point, I accompanied Council Member Kenny Reels through the casino. We were in mid-conversation in the midst of all the wonderment when Mr. Reels bent down to pick up papers strewn around the ATM machines. He walked over to a barrel and threw them away. I could not believe what I was seeing. There were plenty of people there who could have cleaned up the mess but Mr. Reels took it upon himself to take care of it without even missing a beat in our conversation. That really left an impression on me that I will never forget." - Darren Timmerman, Security Officer

So How Big Was Our 2nd

So if you want to know how successful our 2nd Anniversary at MGM was, you need go no further. It was an absolute Top Shelf GRAND HAPPENING where our 5 Star Guests met head on with our finest 5 Star Staff. GO GRAND!!! And a special ‘Hat’s Off’ to our publicity team for a job well done.

Memories from the Marketing Rep. of April 2010 Chanthavisuk "Nou" Singharaj

What type of training did you experience in preparation for the opening? The training was nothing short of an enlightening experience for me. I was excited, excited to learn the ins and outs of casino marketing/operations, being part of a team that would open up MGM Grand, and being the "handshake" to welcome new and returning patrons. It was and still is a huge responsibility, but I knew I had all the qualifications needed to succeed, which is why my training days were enjoyable and enriching. Thanks to William Flanagan, it seemed like a walk in the park.

What stood out most in your mind as to what would make 5-Star Service? I believe a welcoming smile and warm greeting to our patrons in every situation is what makes us a Five Star property. We are inviting patrons into the property, regardless of their agenda or reasons for being here, it is our duty to make them feel very comfortable and welcomed. It's the most important Five Star Service because it will set a tone on the rest of their stay with us as well as give them a chance to engage and converse with the friendly staff we have, building a strong client relationship and recognition. After all who would want to return to a place that they did not feel welcomed?

Tell me about opening night, what you wore, what you did, and about the crowd. Opening night was one of the most exciting things I've ever done in my life. Even with all the dignitaries and celebrities here, I was not as nervous as I thought I would be, perhaps all thanks to the soft opening and extensive training bestowed upon me. For opening night I was one of the select few assigned to assist our Marketing Department, namely Marketing Coordinator Sarah Biggoness with various tasks. I knew the property like the back of my hand and with my extensive training, confidence was at an all time high. I had on my favorite suit and tie, and worked a 12-hour shift that consisted of guest escorts, meet and greet, and handing out gifts. The atmosphere was amazing, full of lights, sounds, and excitement! So much excitement and anticipation amongst the awaiting crowd that we had to open up the casino two hours ahead of schedule! Our patrons reflected that of little kids just getting out of the bus on a field trip to Six Flags Theme Park, but 10 times more anxious! So from the elegant opening performers and dancers on the concourse to Governor Rell's appearance, the Red Carpet walk to Alicia Key's Grand Performance, and Diddy's Den after Party, those 12 hours seemed like six hours.

Can you share the great team building you were responsible for. Before grand opening, to reward ourselves and build strong team chemistry, we all went to celebrate at Lucky's Lounge for a couple of drinks to get out any last minute jitters. After the team outing, I was still overwhelmingly excited that I had such a hard time sleeping, so I ended up doing a light workout to tire myself to bed.

Our Volunteers Made All The Difference By: Jean Brown

The calm before the Grand Storm

"One clear concept from all who participated in MGM Grand's opening is that it

was such an enormous undertaking preparing such a grand spectacle the likes of

which they had never seen before."

The opening of MGM Grand at Foxwoods was similar to watching the extreme games in action. There were hundreds of last minute details needing attention. But thanks to all the willing, ready and able employees, on the clock and off, standing by eager to get the job done there was great hope that everything would be accomplished on time. Sarah Bigoness, Volunteer and Staff Coordinator, played a major role behind the scenes. She was in an instrumental role that was of great benefit to all our guests. Besides coordinating the all employee workforce, it was her job to insure all the gift bags for the thousands of expected guests were properly filled and handed out during the grand MGM opening weekend.

For this article we chose Sarah to share her experience since our Dream Team worked alongside her on opening night; but there are so many not named here who worked as hard if not harder to make it all happen. Two people who come to mind are Jen Salafia and Danielle Carpenter. A very special tribute from MGM and Foxwoods goes to Jen Salafia and Danielle Carpenter who were as critically positioned as Sarah for the grand opening. Their diligent hard work, putting in 14 hour days juggling a hundred balls in the air at one time was critical to making the grand opening the success that it was. Thank you Jen and Danielle from all of us.

So here is the inside scoop on the major volunteer effort during the MGM Grand opening weekend.

It Takes a Village of Volunteers

"First, let's start with the job assigned..."recalls Sarah.

The job of Volunteer Coordinator was given to Sarah Bigoness, our Database Marketing Analyst, one week before the day that the gift bag contents arrived at Foxwoods. The Volunteer Coordinator was a position that came along with the Staffing Coordinator position for VIP celebrity and tribal council escorts and more. But there was so much more. The infamous gift bags had yet to be tackled. First there were boxes upon boxes with gift bag treats. The volunteers had to take the gift bag contents out of the floor to ceiling boxes lined up on pallets. They were responsible for unloading, assembly and transporting the gifts over to MGM, plus giving out gift bags at the opening once guests started arriving. Staffing was needed for press conferences. Greeters were positioned in the hotel lobby, stationed along the casino floor and many other locations. Media check-in was staffed at the concierge desk. Escorts and greeters were positioned for the VIP guests, shuttle buses, and hosts were positioned with the executives all over property greeting guests. Sarah still has a crystal clear memory of the enormity of her mission, "Some of the people who helped out were paid," remembers Sarah. "But most volunteered out of the kindness of their own hearts as part of the MGM Grand opening weekend excitement. I remember having a spreadsheet that was two pages long to cover the three day long extravaganza which I soon found out would end up being a few days longer..."

The reality of overseeing the gift bags didn't really hit until the doors were

opened to Sunset Ballroom where all the contents sat packed in boxes on

pallets stacked all the way up to the ceiling.

The ROAR 8 of 33

MGM 2nd Anniversary Special Edition

"After I reviewed the excel spreadsheet with our team, one of the team members mentioned to me casually that gift bag assembly and distribution was part of my grand opening job". Until this point the additional job had not been on Sarah's radar. "So with no time wasted I discovered there were hundreds and HUNDREDS of gift bags that would be given out to guests", admits Sarah. "The clincher was the fact that these bags would have to be filled with lots of gifts. And these gifts of every size and shape were left ready and waiting in the Sunset Ballroom." But Ms. Bigoness didn't comprehend the enormity of the project until she walked into the ballroom. "The moment I opened the doors to Sunset Ballroom, my jaw dropped and I went into complete shock. The entire room was covered with pallets & pallets of gifts in their boxes, wrapped in cellophane and stacked up to the ceiling. At this point, I knew I had quite the job ahead of me. Once I wrapped my head around what had to be done, I sent out numerous emails to managers of many of our operating departments, and staffing for gift bag assembly began."

Tuesday night count down to the BIG grand opening

From the Tuesday before grand opening weekend until the final wee hours of Friday, approximately ten to twenty volunteers were helping out day and night in that room (The Sunset Ballroom) alone. ESD (Environmental Services Department) destroyed the boxes as volunteers led by Ms. Bigoness plodded along. "We couldn't have done it without the constant assistance from ESD. They provided a huge amount of help to us. Once a pallet was unwrapped, we were able to put each and every gift into its respective area of the room to be assembled. I was coming in at 6 or 7 a.m. and leaving at 9 p.m. each and every day to make sure the job was done and many other of the volunteers were doing the same thing. Department volunteers helped from all over the casino including ESD, promotions, special events, gaming events, the call center, bus marketing, database & direct marketing, entertainment, finance, retail, human resources, employee services, Dream Rewards, guest relations, eCommerce, Mashantucket Pequot Academy (MPA) training, advertising, and an extremely large number of volunteers from both the cage and slot operations. Without this invaluable dedication of time and a lot of hard work by our amazing volunteers from so many departments, we would never have been able to get such an enormous job done," smiles Sarah. The VIP gift bags were assembled with teeth whitener, designer blow dryers, make up, purses, and other items. Friday night's bags were for the friends and family. Each of which had a box of Waterford champagne flutes among other items. Saturday’s bags for the general public included an MGM coffee mug, MGM executive notepad and a stuffed lion. Once assembled at Foxwoods, each and everyone of these gift bags were brought by van, shuttle and bus over to the valet check in at MGM, inside on bell carts and into their respective areas.

No Job Is Ever Too Big

"From what I can remember, the assembly and transportation was a complete blur," Sarah states with a big smile on her face. "Trying to get so much done in such a short period of time was quite the challenge. We had over 130 volunteers helping us out and each volunteer helped out almost everyday until the doors opened. We could never have done it without such a highly motivated volunteer army working day and night. In three to four days each and every one of the many gift bags were filled until the very last hour ready for transporting over to MGM just in time for the event."

It's Show Time!

After the grueling work was done to get those gift bags filled, the staff cleaned up and got ready for the main event. "We had it all ahead of us.... press conferences, the red carpet, Diddy's Den Party and the concert were the events we staffed," remembers Sarah. "This was where the hard work paid off. Although we all worked more than fourteen hour days, it was enjoyable to finally see the MGM in action with music playing, celebrities, guests mingling and the slot machines and tables in operation. The weekend was a fantastic time.... watching the glitz and glamour of a grand opening was definitely the pay off. It definitely was far more than I expected and it will always be a great memory."

Thanks, Thanks and More Thanks

The ROAR 9 of 33

MGM 2nd Anniversary Special Edition

"I think the biggest take home on this was just the magnitude of what was done and how amazing teamwork is when you have such a big task ahead of you," Sarah shares with an air of gratitude. "A huge thanks go to Jen Salafia and Danielle Carpenter as well because they were both extremely instrumental in getting everything accomplished - gift bags, staffing, media set up, check-in and credentials and just dedicated a lot of time to the grand opening as well," concludes Ms. Bigoness. "They were absolutely amazing and deserve all the credit possible. There was nothing I did that they did not do as well. They both deserve a medal." But if asked, Sarah will be the very first to admit, it was the volunteer energy and cooperation that made the big MGM Grand at Foxwoods event take shape. That volunteer workforce was made up of you and your co-workers from far and wide across the Foxwoods property. You all did an amazing job. And if it wasn't for your hard earned efforts, our MGM doors would never have opened. Go MGM Grand & Foxwoods employees, you should be more than proud of your great accomplishments!!!!!

MGM 2nd Anniversary Special Edition

From the Editor-in-Chief...

An Unforgettable Journey into Success Thank You Team!

Two years ago, I remember us opening the MGM Grand at Foxwoods. We went through

training exercises at Dream Rewards booths at Foxwoods and in the Roar Room. The big day came May 17, 2008 when folks lined up across the skywalk waiting for the ribbon to be cut. It was a day we will never forget whether we served as an MGM team member; Foxwoods team member, or perhaps a customer.

As I look back at the past two years of the MGM Grand at Foxwoods, a lot of memories come to mind. In the Dream Rewards Department, we have folks here since Day 1, folks who have joined us along the way, and those who pursued other career and job opportunities. They have all taught us valuable life lessons in improving our skills so that we can provide 5-Star Customer Service to each other and to our guests.

Each day was a new experience at the Dream Rewards Booth and our cohesiveness as a team was quite obvious to our customers. Our jobs as Marketing Representatives transformed and allowed us more flexibility. Greeting allowed us to act as ambassadors and answer questions of guests walking down the concourse. Roving the casino floor allowed us to interact with guests along with slot attendants, slot technicians, supervisors, and beverage staff as we worked together to help the customers with their issues. It allowed us to capture new signups of folks unaware of the location of Dream Rewards and we assisted them with card reprints, Bonus Slot Play downloads, and collecting e-mail addresses. Taking pit calls allowed players to receive Dream Cards without leaving their favorite game and allowed us to interact with the dealers and pit bosses. Our work in the Grand Central Lounge allowed us to interact with VIP customers in a special way along with food and beverage staff as we performed lounge registration tasks. Cross training enabled us to help the box office with their lines and allowed us to get to know their staff and new software.

MGM Grand at Foxwoods changed and grew from its infancy to become 2 years old through the opening of a Munson's Chocolate store, Panache clothing and accessories store, Pandora jewelry store along with new types of slot machines and table games.

The creation of this newsletter, The ROAR, initiated by MGM Assistant Manager of Dream Rewards William Flanagan, went through several stages since its inception in fall 2009. MGM Dream Rewards Supervisor and The ROAR Newsletter Managing Editor Jean Brown has been instrumental in helping teach her skills from her many years of news experience. The

ROAR has highlighted various Marketing Representatives, Casino Hosts, and Executive Hosts in the MGM Casino Marketing Department. We reached out and took photos and talked with folks in other departments like Security, ESD, Housekeeping, Hotel, retail, VIP Services, and our leased outlets. We have crossed the large skywalk connecting MGM to Foxwoods with its airport-like people mover. We covered stories at Foxwoods ranging from the comprehensive setup of Christmas decorations and the stories behind them, the 18th Anniversary of Foxwoods Celebration in Cedar Square, and a comprehensive timeline of Foxwoods Resort Casino with photos and stories of its beginnings as a High Stakes Bingo Hall. The ROAR has highlighted accomplishments of various folks including PRIDE Award Winners and those who are heroes in their communities whether it’s involvement with Special Olympics, a high school basketball team, a local church, or simply starting a new family. The ROAR successfully allowed MGM Dream Rewards team members to gain photography, writing, layout, and editing skills and branched out to become a publication praised by many for its professionalism and ability to increase morale.
