Summer Worship at St. John's

Fourth Weekend after Pentecost Saturday, July 1st—Evening Light at 5:00 p.m.

Sunday, July 2nd—Holy Communion at 9:00 a.m.

The welcome of baptism is for all God’s children. This

baptismal gift sets us free from the power of sin and

death. In today’s gospel, Christ promises that the dis-

ciple who gives a cup of cold water to the little ones

serves Christ himself. From worship we are sent on

our baptismal mission: to serve the little ones of this

world and to be a sign of God’s merciful welcome.

Fifth Weekend after Pentecost Saturday, July 8th—Evening Light at 5:00 p.m.

Sunday, July 9th—Holy Communion at 9:00 a.m.

The mystery of God’s ways is sometimes hidden from

the wise and intelligent. Jesus associates with the

lowly and outcast. Like Paul, we struggle with our own

selfish desires and seek God’s mercy and for-

giveness. We gather to be refreshed by Christ’s invita-

tion: “Come to me, all you that are weary.” Gathered

around word, water, and meal, we find rest for our

souls.

Sixth Weekend after Pentecost Saturday, July 15th—Evening Light at 5:00 p.m.

Sunday, July 16th—Holy Communion at 9:00 a.m.

God’s word is like the rain that waters the earth and

brings forth vegetation. It is also like the sower who

scatters seed indiscriminately. Our lives are like

seeds sown in the earth. Even from what appears to

be little, dormant, or dead, God promises a harvest.

At the Lord’s table we are fed with the bread of life,

that we may bear fruit in the world.

Seventh Weekend after Pentecost Saturday, July 22nd—Evening Light at 5:00 p.m.

Sunday, July 23rd—Holy Communion at 9:00 a.m.

It is an age-old question: why is there evil in the

world? In the parable of the wheat and the weeds

Jesus suggests that both grow together until the har-

vest. With Paul, we long for the day that all creation

will be set free from bondage and suffering. Having

both weeds and wheat within us, we humbly place

our hope in the promises of God, and from the Lord’s

table we go forth to bear the fruit of justice and mer-

cy.

Eighth Weekend after Pentecost Saturday, July 29th—Evening Light at 5:00 p.m.

Sunday, July 30th—Holy Communion at 9:00 a.m.

As Solomon prays for wisdom, we seek to more deep-

ly know the treasures of faith. In today’s gospel Jesus

offers everyday images that reveal to us the reign of

God: a tree that becomes a sheltering home, yeast

that penetrates and expands, a treasured pearl, a net

that gains a great catch. Even as we seek the riches

of God’s reign, the great surprise is that God’s grace

finds us first!

Ninth Weekend after Pentecost Saturday, August 5th—Evening Light at 5:00 p.m.

Sunday, August 6th—Holy Communion at 9:00 a.m.

In today’s first reading God invites all who are hungry

or thirsty to receive food and drink without cost. Jesus

feeds the hungry multitude and reveals the abun-

dance of God. At the eucharistic table we remember

all who are hungry or poor in our world today. As we

share the bread of life, we are sent forth to give our-

selves away as bread for the hungry.

The Pastor’s Message: A heartfelt thank you to all who made Vacation Bible School a huge suc-

cess! We spent the week at Hero Central training academy, learning that

God wants us to "DO GOOD! SEEK PEACE! AND GO AFTER IT!" Each day,

we learned that God's heroes have...HEART! COURAGE! WISDOM! HOPE!

and POWER! About 117 children each day were cared for by 70 volunteer

staff members, ranging from 5th grade to retired. Our staff this year

worked so very hard! They made VBS a complete joy for all who participat-

ed. Our crew leaders and collaborators deserve a shout-out: Barb Rambo,

Bobbi Riley, Olivia Schumacher, Jodi and Cole O’Neill, Debbe Welsh, Seth

Clark, Danielle Blackledge (who also brought donuts for the staff every

day!), Allison Kramer, Nolan Atkinson, Sandy Zimmermann, Mark

Yanchek, Laura Caughlan, Anne Faust, Kay Mann, Margaret Walker and Sidney, Sonya Sowards, and No-

ah Deichmann. Much gratitude to Assistant Director Kathy Atkinson for lending organizational wisdom and to Da-

na Deichmann for the supply of caffeine and historical wisdom.

There’s a lot of behind the scenes work that happens. Thanks to Bill Schoellkopf for his help with audio, to Jim

Taylor our quarter master, to Cindy Schubert and Ed Walters for keeping us cool with ice donations, to Tammy

Klotzbach for keeping us in shade with the donation of the tent, to Fred Parry and Schuylkill Township for lending

us traffic cones, to the YMCA for letting Afternoon Adventures swim, and to WELCA for their generous sup-

port. (Thanks to all I may have inadvertently missed, too!) Our VBS planning team offers hundreds of hours of sup-

port to make this week happen. We couldn’t do VBS without their tireless love and support. Your vision, creative

talents and neverending energy continue to inspire me: Kathy Atkinson, Dana Deichmann, Barb Rambo and Bob-

bi Riley. And to you, the congregation --- thank you for your ongoing love and support of this exceptional minis-

try. May we carry into the future the very important message: we are ALL God's Superheroes! Blessings, Pastor

Skyle

P.S. We are in need of more adult volunteers next year! Please see Pastor Skyle if you can help.

P.P.S. Please see all the great pictures throughout this newsletter!

Blessings, Pastor Skyle

Summer Worship (continued from page 1):

Tenth Weekend after Pentecost Saturday, August 12th—Evening Light at 5:00 p.m.

Sunday, August 13th—Holy Communion at 9:00 a.m.

Elijah finds the presence of God not in earthquake, wind, or fire, but in the sound of sheer silence. When the disci-ples face a great storm on the sea, they cry out with fear. Jesus says: “Take heart, it is I; do not be afraid.” Amid the storms of life, we gather to seek the calm presence of Christ that soothes our fears. In comforting words of scripture and in the refreshing bread and cup of the eucharist, God grants us peace and sends us forth to be a

sign of God’s presence to others.

Eleventh Weekend after Pentecost Saturday, August 19th—Evening Light at 5:00 p.m.

Sunday, August 20th—Holy Communion at 9:00 a.m.

In Isaiah we hear that God’s house shall be a house of prayer for all people and that God will gather the outcasts of Israel. The Canaanite woman in today’s gospel is a Gentile, an outsider, who is unflinching in her request that Jesus heal her daughter. As Jesus commends her bold faith, how might our church extend its mission to those on the margins of society? In our gathering around word and meal we receive strength to be signs of comfort, healing,

and justice for those in need.

Twelfth Weekend after Pentecost Saturday, August 26th—Evening Light at 5:00 p.m.

Sunday, August 27th—Holy Communion at 9:00 a.m.

In Isaiah the people are bid to look to their spiritual ancestors as the rock from which they were hewn. Jesus de-clares that the church will be built on the rock of Peter’s bold confession of faith. God’s word of reconciliation and mercy are keys to the church’s mission. Paul urges us to not be conformed to this world, but to offer our bodies as a living sacrifice, using our individual gifts to build up the body of Christ. From the table we go forth to offer our

spiritual worship through word and deed.

During August St. John’s has a special emphasis on PACS. Our do-

nations are essential because donations to community service or-

ganizations tend to slow down in the summer--but hunger does not

slow down. The mission of PACS is to connect people in the Phoe-

nixville area with community resources and emergency assis-

tance. PACS does this by connecting people to the appropriate re-

sources to meet their needs—providing emergency food, housing,

utilities and health services to help people achieve economic self-

sufficiency. Most of the people served by PACS are the “working

poor,” which means they work but their incomes aren’t sufficient to

provide basic needs. We lend our assistance by donating food or

cash, volunteering and even remembering PACS in our wills. HOW

CAN YOU HELP? Pick up a few extra items at the grocery store, and place them on our PACS food/cleaning item

shelves in the narthex and by the church office. Thank you!

Youth and Family Event Planning Meeting

July 12, 6:30 p.m. Please join us on Wednesday, July 12 as we brainstorm events

and activities to support our growing Youth and Family Minis-

try. Everyone is welcome! Our goal is to offer a variety of events

throughout the year that align to different age groups, as well as

events that create intergenerational connections. Last year we

hosted the fall Trunk or Treat, a float in the Phoenixville holiday

parade, Cake Wars, an afternoon of board games and the Easter

Egg Hunt. We had a bowling night for St. John's Youth and are

looking for more ideas.

We need your ideas and your support in choosing events for

2017/2018. Please consider joining us! Reach out to Shelley Saeger at (262) 424-4939 or shellsae-

[email protected] if you have questions or want to share some thoughts.

2017 Confirmands NAME: Will Blackledge Confirmation Verse: Proverbs 3: 5-6 “Trust in the LORD with all your heart and

lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him and He

will make your paths straight.”

I chose this verse because it helps me to have a stronger faith in God, Jesus

and the Holy Spirit because I know they are always there for me. It helps me to

believe in God a bit more, because the verse says he will be here for me if I

trust Him and believe Him. I know now that God will be with me through hard

times together with my family and friends if I believe.

Spiritual Gifts: Leadership, Hospitality, Wisdom

Ministry Covenant: Be a communion assistant, serve in VBS, servant leader,

share talents joyfully, participate in Boy Scouts, help with Easter Egg Hunt

NAME: Lexi Booz Confirmation Verse: Jeremiah 29:11 “For I know the plans I have for you, de-

clares the LORD, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you

hope and a future.”

I chose this verse because no matter what happens, even when I cannot see it, I know that God has a plan for my life.

Spiritual Gifts: Mercy/Encouragement, Helping, Teaching

Ministry Covenant: Help in nursery, decorate the church for the holidays, be in youth group, teach Sunday School, serve in

VBS, work on Afternoon Adventures staff, go on mission trips/retreats, represent St. John's on mission trips to South Dakota

and urban trips, do her senior project at St. John's, help pack Phantom Food Packs, work on Angel Tree, be a community serv-

ant leader, invite friends to worship/youth group, do a scouting project

NAME: Travis Brown Confirmation Verse: Ecclesiastes 9:10 “Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might, for in the realm of the dead,

where you are going, there is neither working nor planning nor knowledge nor wisdom.”

I chose this verse because it makes me think about finishing what you started and always doing your best. If I am on a team, I

have a commitment to be at every practice, every game and try my hardest, no matter what the score or how the game is go-

ing. If you start a confirmation program, you have to see it through, attend retreats, participate, be involved – even if that

means missing other activities or not being able to sleep in on Sundays! By always putting your best foot forward and trying

with all your might, you have the best chance at making a positive impact and a difference in this world. This verse reminds

me to use my spiritual gifts that God gave me and always trust in him, even when faced with challenges that make it hard and

tempting not to.

Spiritual Gifts: Leadership, Giving, Hospitality

Ministry Covenant: Be an usher, be in Sunday Morning Youth Group, possibly do his senior project at St. John’s, assist with

church website, share in the Lord’s Supper, pray daily and live boldly

NAME: Sean Clark Confirmation Verse: II Thessalonians 3:13 “And as for you, brothers and sisters, never tire of doing what is good.”

I chose this verse because I think perseverance is good for all of us, myself included.

Spiritual Gifts: Leadership, Giving, Wisdom

Ministry Covenant: Be an usher, be a procession volunteer, serve in VBS, work on Afternoon Adventures staff, go on mission

trips/retreats, help pack Phantom Food Packs, assist with Church website and electronic equipment, give offering regularly,

be a youth member of church council

NAME: Mikayla Niness Confirmation Verse: I Corinthians 13: 4-8 “Love is patient; love is kind; love is not envious or boastful or arrogant or rude. It

does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice in wrongdoing, but rejoices in the truth. It bears

all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never ends.”

This Bible verse is very important to me and I believe that love will never end and it will always be there when we need it most.

Love is a big part of Faith.

Spiritual Gifts: Hospitality, Wisdom, Leadership

Ministry Covenant: Be an usher, serve in VBS, use the gifts God gave me

5

2017 Confirmands (continued from page 4)

NAME: Tyler Pekofsky Confirmation Verse: Joshua 1:9 “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God

will be with you wherever you go.”

I chose this verse because it helps me know that God is with me for my entire life. He is with me in my journey of faith, and in

all of the highs and lows. It helps me stay strong during tough times and means a lot to me. It has helped me through confir-

mation class, freshman year and losing loved ones. It will help me through the rest of my years in high school, become a driv-

er, college, and more.

Spiritual Gifts: Discernment, Giving, Teaching

Ministry Covenant: Be an usher, be a communion assistant, serve in VBS, represent St. John's at the ELCA National Youth

Gathering, go on mission trips, participate in Sunday School, complete his senior project at St. John's, help with car wash and

Easter Egg Hunt, help pack Phantom Food Packs, support the Tanzanian Hospitals, tell others about God, St. John's and invite

others to youth group, give offering regularly

NAME: Olesya Sitkowski Confirmation Verse: I Samuel 16:7 “But the LORD said to Samuel, "Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have

rejected him. The LORD does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks

at the heart.”

I chose this verse because it reminds me to look beyond outward appearances and not to judge people on what they look like

or what they are wearing. This is very hard to do particularly in high school.

Spiritual Gifts: Wisdom, Faith, Hospitality

Ministry Covenant: Be a communion assistant, be a reader/lector, help with nursery, teach Sunday School, work on Angel

Tree, help with Easter Egg hunt, strive for justice and peace

NAME: Karisa Saeger Confirmation Verse: Proverbs 12:25 “Anxiety weighs down the heart, but a kind word cheers it up.”

I chose this verse because I find it probably the most understanding of all verses, it's a reminder of how to help when every-

thing appears to be going wrong for someone or myself. It is an easy to remember verse that would easily help in a stressful

situation.

Spiritual Gifts: Leadership, Wisdom, Giving

Ministry Covenant: Decorate the church for holidays, help in nursery, share artistic gifts, serve in VBS, participate in youth

group, work on Afternoon Adventures staff, help create videos for church, go on mission trips/retreats, do her senior project at

St. John's, help pack Phantom Food Packs, make meals for St. Mary's shelter, work on Angel Tree, invite friends to worship

youth group, assist with church website, post on church Facebook page, assist with electronic equipment, give offering regu-

larly, give time consistently

NAME: Lily Stewart Confirmation Verse: Philippians 4:13 “I can do everything through Him who gives me strength.”

I chose this verse because it represents that God gives us strength every day. His strength allows me to do everything in my

life.

Spiritual Gifts: Leadership, Helps, Mercy/Encouragement

Ministry Covenant: Be an usher, help with nursery, decorate the church for holidays, be in Sunday Morning Youth Group

Youth Summer Servant Trip to Philadelphia Please pray for our youth and adults as they prepare for a week of service throughout

Philadelphia on July 2-7. Their week will focus on poverty and food justice issues/

advocacy, working with local ur-ban farmers who help provide quality food for those

living in poverty. They will have many stories to tell when they return home! Thank you

for helping them achieve their goal of $3,000 to participate in this trip!

Electronic Giving Options Available

We have updated the options for how you can provide financial support to St. John’s. These options are in addi-

tion to the Simply Giving program which many are already using. The new options will allow you to set up a recur-

ring gift as well through your personal credit card or bank account. A new addition is the provision to send a one-

time gift.

For immediate access, you can use your Smart Phone. To get to the Smart Phone application, search for “Give+”

in the store. Once installed, search for “St Johns Lutheran Church.” There are many to choose from, so make

sure you find St. John’s in Phoenixville. This application will also allow single or recurring gifts.

Another option that will be coming soon is the ability to swipe a credit card at a computer station in the narthex.

Please contact Dale Herbranson if you have any questions.

Dear Scholarship Committee,

Thank you for choosing me to receive the St. John's scholarship. I am

very grateful to receive this scholarship and I am looking forward to pur-

suing my education at Susquehanna University. I also would like to

thank the congregation for their support and belief in me. I am truly hon-

ored.

Sincerely,

Aaron Romano

Dear St. John’s Lutheran Church:

Thank you very much for the gift of $200

that we received in May of 2017 for the

Campaign for Cabins at Bear Creek

Camp. We are grateful for your support

and for your partnership in this project.

We are very excited about what God is

doing at Bear Creek Camp. Our new cab-

ins and upgraded program buildings will

allow us to share all that God has given

us with more and more people as our

capacity and usage will increase. Oppor-

tunities like spiritual growth, community

building, faith formation and exciting ad-

ventures will continue to be a corner-

stone of all we do all while our campers

and guests enjoy the new facilities. I en-

courage you to keep up with all that is

happening at Bear Creek Camp by

checking out our website at

bearcreekcamp.org or by “liking” our

page on Facebook. We would also wel-

come you to visit the camp as we would

love to show you around and explore all

we have to offer. Thank you once again

for your gift! We thank God for you!

Sincerely,

Dan Scharnhorst

Bear Creek Executive Director

St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church:

With gratitude, I would like to extend a

heartfelt thank you to everyone who of-

fered prayers and expressions of kind-

ness and sympathy to my family and I as

we mourned the death of my mother.

Thank you for the donation to St. Peter’s

Food Pantry! May the Lord bless you

and keep you in His care.

In Christ,

Rev. Jeffrey M. Stecz

Dear St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church:

Thank you for your recent contribution in the amount of $2,455 for The

Good Samaritan Shelter’s “Adopt a Room” fundraiser. Adopting a room

at this property is a gift that keeps on giving. These home improvements

will bless the current residents as well as our future guests and your gen-

erosity will be forever honored. Adopting a room helps renew hope for

hundreds of homeless and formerly homeless people in our community

by creating affordable and transitional housing in a wonderful home in

the heart of a great community. We are so grateful for your generosity!

Nate Hoffer

Executive Director

Dear Rev. Cynthia Krommes:

In the scriptures it says that “not even a cup of cold water given in My

Name will go unrewarded.” The meals your congregation supplied to our

shelter last week will merit many blessings for your parish family. The

meals certainly were a blessing to our families. We would like to convey

our special gratitude to Nancy Feldman for her wonderful effort that

brought meals every night to the shelter. Thank you so much!

Gratefully,

Sr. Bernadette Dougherty,

staff and residents of

St. Mary’s Franciscan Shelter

Soups are coming! WELCA will meet

after worship on July 30th to assemble

soup for the Annual Soup Sale Fund-

raiser. There will be three kinds avail-

able: Chicken Spiral, Beef Barley, and

Potato. Help is needed on the 30th

beginning around 10:15 a.m. Pizza

lunch will be ordered. Items needed

include: powdered milk, tri-color rotini and macaroni. Please label

these “WELCA” and leave in the kitchen.

St. John’s Stephen Ministry Team

continues to meet through the

summer. We are currently dis-

cussing the dos and don’ts of cli-

chés during various life situations.

For questions about Stephen Min-

istry, to refer or request a Stephen

Minister, or to inquire about train-

ing, please contact Linda Landis.
