The National Leadership and Innovation Centre for Nursing and Midwifery, Office of the Nursing and Midwifery Services Director, Health Service Executive, wish to extend a warm welcome to you all in joining us for our residential summer school. The theme of the summer school is ‘Engineering the Future’ in recognition of the significant contribution you make in leading and supporting the delivery of safe and effective healthcare.

The phenomenon of leadership is one that has come to the fore in healthcare in the last century but more recently for the professions of nursing and midwifery. It can be vague and intangible with no clear definition and multiple theories. However, it is recognised as crucial for successful reform and change and is central to sustaining a positive culture together with the underlying values of care, compassion and commitment. The Summer School offers participants real time experiences through this personal and professional leadership development programme with a unique opportunity to come together as a collaborative group to network with peers and leaders from across the services. Leading international and national speakers will provide examples and insights into the context of leadership in today’s world. We invite you to play an active part in the energetic workshops and discussions which are planned. We hope the learning and networking opportunities that emerge from the summer school will support your continued contribution to health service policy and planning as well as the professions of nursing and midwifery. Cora Lunn, Director, National Leadership and Innovation Centre for Nursing and Midwifery

Cora trained as a Registered General Nurse in Limerick

Regional Hospital. She has held a range of clinical and

practice development roles including Assistant Director

of Nursing, Acting Head of Nursing Development and

Quality and Project Manager – National Clinical

Leadership Development. Cora was appointed Director,

National Leadership and Innovation Centre in 2011. She

is responsible for the strategic management and

development of the centre and its activity within the

Office for the Nursing and Midwifery Services HSE.

Cora has undertaken a Higher Diploma in Cardio-Respiratory Nursing, MSc Health and Social

Policy. She has 12 years experience in leading and facilitating leadership and team

development. Her personal goal is to ensure that nurses and midwives have access to the

tools which enable them to do their job well; so that patients’ and families’ experience of

healthcare is positive.

Ms Mary Mac Mahon Acting Director, National Leadership and Innovation Centre for Nursing and Midwifery, Office of the Nursing and Midwifery Services Director, HSE

Having qualified as a Registered General Nurse and Midwife, Mary held nursing and midwifery positions abroad in Kenya and Saudi Arabia. When she returned to Ireland, she co-designed and was course leader for the MSc in Cancer Care for many years run jointly between St Luke’s Hospital, Dublin and The University of Dublin, Trinity College. She is a former member of the Board of the Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery, RCSI, where she has also been a sessional lecturer for Leadership and Strategic Planning on post-graduate programmes.

She is a member of a number of groups including the group co-ordinating the annual ‘Leadership Seminar’ with Trinity College. In her current position as Deputy Director, Mary

has both operational and strategic roles. She is also the lead for a number of National Leadership Programmes for Directors and Assistant Directors of Nursing and Midwifery. She is presently completing her Doctoral studies in DCU.

Ms Teresa Moore Leadership and Innovation Advisor, National Leadership and Innovation Centre for Nursing and Midwifery, Office of the Nursing and Midwifery Services Director, HSE

Prior to joining the NLIC, Teresa worked for a number of years with HSE West NMPD Unit. The experience of working across services and disciplines enabled her to build on her leadership knowledge and skills gained from working as a nurse and manager over many years’ in the health services in Dublin. During her time in the NMPD Unit, Teresa led on national and regional initiatives including the development of a national strategy for continence services, the implementation of regional nurse-led continence services and the implementation of a standardised documentation system into residential care centres for older people in HSE West/Mid-West.

She has also worked collaboratively with HSE National Procurement, Portfolio and Category team on the development of national contracts aimed at optimising efficiencies and achieving quality and value for money in the delivery of patient care. Teresa joined the NLIC in 2012 and since joining has led and supported a number of leadership initiatives, including the development of the national Clinical Leadership Competency ePortfolio (CLCeP) for nurses and midwives. Others include Leadership Programme for clinical and social care mangers working within ID Services, bespoke Leaders Programmes and Quality Collaboratives, designed to foster leadership development, and to build quality improvement capacity within nursing and midwifery. Teresa’s interests include team building strategies, project management, implementation science, mentorship and building collaborative platforms to support the leadership development of nurses and midwives.

Ms Marie Kilduff Leadership and Innovation Advisor, National Leadership and Innovation Centre for Nursing and Midwifery, Office of the Nursing and Midwifery Services Director, HSE

With over 25 years of experience in healthcare, Marie has acquired a depth of knowledge in clinical practice, leadership, education and management. Marie’s qualifications include an MSc in Nursing Education, Grad Dip in Psychotherapy and Counselling and an Advanced Diploma in Personal, Leadership and Executive Coaching. In her current role, Marie works with clinical leaders and healthcare teams to support them with personal and professional development. Drawing on her experience in psychotherapy and executive coaching, she designs and delivers multidisciplinary, national clinical leadership programmes.

Marie is an adjunct Lecturer at University College Dublin and a member of the Associate Faculty at the Institute of Leadership, Royal College of Surgeons Ireland. Prior to her current role, she held the position of Assistant Director of Nursing at the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital where she demonstrated clinical and professional leadership to provide strategic direction for the development of oncology/haematology nursing. In her career, Marie has also worked as a Lecturer in Nursing in University College Dublin which enabled her to develop her academic, leadership and organisational expertise. Marie is a past president of the Irish Association of Nurses in Oncology (IANO) and during her term, her strategic vision and guidance ensured that significant progress to develop the organisation. She had published in peer reviewed journals, lectured in many universities and spoken at national and international conferences.

Ms Georgina Bassett Leadership and Innovation Advisor, National Leadership and Innovation Centre for Nursing and Midwifery, ONMSD, HSE

Georgina is a qualified nurse with a Postgraduate Diploma in Gerontological Nursing and Business studies and a Masters in Healthcare Management. Prior to her commencement with the National Leadership & Innovation Centre for Nursing and Midwifery (NLIC), within the Office of the Nursing and Midwifery Services Director (ONMSD), Georgina worked as a Director of Nursing with 10 years’ experience in senior nurse management in Care of the Older Person Services and 20 years nursing in the Irish Public Health service.

Georgina has extensive experience in clinical and managerial roles and is committed to staff development facilitating on many national programmes to influence organisational culture and promote nursing and midwifery leadership skills; The National Person Centred programme in Older Person Services, Leading in Uncertain Times programme and the Florence Nightingale Foundation programme, Leaders for Compassionate Care. She is the Honorary Secretary of the Irish Association of Nursing & Midwifery (IADNAM) and has represented the association on several national groups including the Subject Matter Expert Group for the Clinical Leadership Competency ePortfolio Framework, the Advisory panel for the Quality Care Metrics Older Persons Work stream and more recently, the Steering Committee of the Department of Health Policy on Graduate, Specialist and Advanced Nursing and Midwifery Practice. Georgina is currently building on her frontline experiences to assist the NLIC and ONMSD to develop strong and capable nurse leaders at every level in the organisation and is also actively contributing to the transformation of healthcare and the provision of high quality patient care.

Ms. Michelle Frawley, Administrator, National Leadership and Innovation Centre for Nursing and Midwifery, ONMSD, HSE Office of the Nursing and Midwifery Services Director, HSE

Michelle graduated from the University of Limerick in

2006 with a Business Degree majoring in Human

Resources. Shortly after graduating Michelle joined the

Nursing and Midwifery Planning and Development Unit in

Limerick. During her time in the NMPDU, she worked

alongside the NMPDU Project Officers and was involved

in numerous projects. Michelle has held the post of full

time administrator at the National Leadership and

Innovation Centre for Nursing and Midwifery, HSE, since

it was established.

Professor Stephen Boyle Programme Director, University College Dublin Executive Development

Stephen Boyle is a negotiation trainer and a lecturer at UCD Michael Smurfit Graduate Business School, where he delivers executive development programmes in negotiation and influence, teaches on the school’s triple-accredited MBA and other programmes, and directs a number of diploma and degree programmes. Stephen has delivered workshops in Europe, Asia and the United States for clients in sectors as diverse as automotive, construction, financial services, government, healthcare, law enforcement, pharmaceuticals, retail and technology.

He has also worked as a consultant on management development programmes for the International Trade Centre in Geneva, an office of the United Nations and World Trade Organisation. Prior to embarking on an independent training and consulting career over fifteen years ago, Stephen held roles in management consulting and in communication and change management at a Fortune 500 company.

Dr. Mary Collins Senior Executive Development Specialist, Institute of Leadership, RCSI

Mary is a Coaching Psychologist who has been working in the Leadership Development/Talent Management field for over 15 years. Her current role as Senior Executive Development Specialist with RCSI Institute of Leadership involves working with senior leaders in the healthcare sector to develop their management and leadership capabilities through a range of executive development approaches e.g. executive coaching, 360 feedback, master classes etc.

Mary is also involved in academic work with RCSI including lecturing on a range of MSc. programmes here and in the Middle East. Mary also supervises research at masters and doctoral levels.

For the last 4 years, Mary has been running a Women in Leadership Programme in Dubai. Prior to joining RCSI, Mary was Head of Talent and Learning for Deloitte Ireland for 7 years and held a range of different OD roles in the Telecoms sector. Mary completed the Professional Doctorate Programme in Dublin City University in 2010. Her research focus was looking at enhancing the psychological contract of ‘Generation Y’ professionals to enhance performance and engagement levels. Her work was published as part of a book in 2014 titled ‘Managing Professionals & Other Smart People’. She is now a regular conference and key note speaker in this area. Mary is an Accredited Professional Executive Coach with the Association of Coaching (AC) and is qualified in the use of a range of psychometric and personality assessment instruments. She is also a Licensed Business NLP Practitioner and holds an Advanced Diploma in Hypno-Psychotherapy. Mary is a graduate member of the Psychological Society of Ireland (PSI). In 2015, Mary was invited to be a ‘role model’ for the Aurora Women in Leadership in Education Programme. Mary is one of the authors on a book on ‘Healthcare Leadership’ in collaboration with Trinity College due to be published in Summer 2017. Mary is also currently writing a book on ‘Talent Acquisition’ to be published in Spring 2018.

Ms Mary Day Group CEO, Ireland East Hospital Group

Ms. Mary Day joined the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital in 2008 as Director of Nursing and assumed the concomitant function of Head of Operations in 2011. Mary was appointed as an Adjunct Associate Professor at the UCD School of Nursing, Midwifery and Health Systems in December 2010. Mary was appointed CEO in 2013, and was appointed in late 2014 as Group CEO of the Ireland East Hospital Group.

Mary’s previous experience traversed diverse roles in oncology / haematology nursing in the UK and Ireland and included a two-year term in the Department of Health as Nurse Advisor in Professional/Practice Development, being responsible for supporting the Chief Nursing Officer on all aspects of policy affecting nursing and midwifery education and healthcare services. Mary’s professional and academic qualifications include a BSc (Hons) in Cancer Nursing (1999) and and MSc in Health Service Management (2004).

Ms Suzanne Dempsey Chief Director of Nursing, Children’s Hospital Group, Hon President, IADNAM

Ms Suzanne Dempsey successfully qualified as a Paediatric Nurse in the Children’s University Hospital in 1988 and as a General Nurse in 1990 from Beaumont Hospital, Dublin. During her time there she worked predominately in the speciality of Neurosciences including Neuro Intensive Care. From 1999 - 2010 she was the Clinical Directorate Nurse Manager for Neurosciences, Ophthalmology and Cochlear Implant Services before taking on the role of Director of Nursing at Temple Street Children's University Hospital in 2010.

Suzanne holds a BSc in Nursing (Hons) (DCU); an MSc in Creative Leadership and Organisational Development (Hons) (RCSI) and most recently earned a Diploma in Quality and Leadership (RCPI). She also has completed the Prince 2 Project Methodology course and a Diploma in Mediation. Suzanne’s main areas of interest are research and leadership, in particular the development of strong leadership within the profession of Nursing. In her new role as Chief Director of Nursing, Children’s Hospital Group, Suzanne is the executive lead for the integration of all clinical services across the three hospitals in preparation for the new children’s hospital and the two Paediatric OPD and Urgent Care Centres and its planned opening in 2021. The design and development of this new hospital as part of an integrated clinical network for Paediatrics is an incredible opportunity for both nursing and the future children of Ireland. Suzanne elected was as the President of the Irish Association of Directors of Nursing and Midwifery (IADNAM) in May 2016.

Mr Brian Dolan Director of Health Service 360 and Director of Service Improvement, Canterbury District Health Board, New Zealand.

Brian Dolan trained as a psychiatric nurse in Castlebar, Co Mayo and did his general nursing at St Mary’s Hospital, London. Most of his clinical career was in emergency care as well as in academic general practice. He is Director of Health Service 360, which provides online 360 appraisals for nurses, doctors, AHPs and managers. He works with organisations in the UK, New Zealand, Australia and Ireland undertaking leadership development, improvements in patient flow and systems reform.

Brian is also Director of Service Improvement, Canterbury District Health Board, NZ where, as well as involvement in integrated healthcare development, his role includes running the award-winning Collabor8 lean thinking and leadership programme aimed at all staff across the Canterbury and West Coast health systems. He has published over 70 articles in a range of nursing, medical and paramedic journals and is author/editor of six books, mainly on emergency care and his new book ‘Practitioner as Teacher’ co-authored with Sue Hinchliff is to be published by Elsevier in June 2017. Brian was awarded a Fellowship of the Royal Society of Arts (RSA) in March 2016. The RSA was founded in a Covent Garden coffee shop in 1754 for the benefit of 'the publick good' and the RSA Fellowship is an international community of achievers and influencers from a wide array of backgrounds and professions, distinguished by the title 'FRSA’. He is Visiting Professor of Nursing, Oxford Institute of Nursing, Midwifery and Allied Health Research, Oxford and Honorary Professor of Leadership in Healthcare, University of Salford, Manchester. Brian is also the originator of the #EndPJparalysis social movement which encourages patients to get up, dressed and moving while in hospital to reduce the risk of deconditioning and other harms. By mid-May 2017 it had gained >58 million impressions on Twitter and has been adopted across the NHS as well as in New Zealand, Australia and Canada. Cork University Hospital is also an early adopter.

Professor Jonathan Drennan Chair of Nursing and Health Services Research at the School of Nursing and Midwifery, University College Cork

Jonathan Drennan currently holds the Chair of Nursing and Health Services Research at the School of Nursing and Midwifery, University College Cork; prior to that he was Professor of Healthcare Research at the University of Southampton. He has undertaken research in Ireland and the UK in a number of areas including non-medical prescribing, emergency care, the abuse and neglect of older people in community and residential settings, cancer information services, the development of priorities for nursing and midwifery research and safe nurse staffing.

He is the co-author of a Cochrane review on hospital nurse staffing models and staff and patient outcomes as well as systematic reviews on safe nurse staffing in medical and surgical wards and emergency departments. He presented to and advised the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) Safe Staffing Advisory Committees on safe nurse staffing in medical and surgical wards and accident and emergency departments in the UK. This was part of the development process of the NICE guidelines on safe staffing. Professor Drennan is also a member of the Irish Department of Health advisory team involved in the development of guidelines for safe nurse staffing and skill mix in the

healthcare sector. He is currently leading a Health Research Board funded programme of research on safe nurse staffing and skill-mix in Ireland.

Dr Leandro Herrero CEO, Chief Organization Architect and lead designer of the products and services of The Chalfont Project

Dr Leandro Herrero is the CEO, Chief Organization Architect and lead designer of the products and services of The Chalfont Project, an international firm of organizational architects. He is the pioneer of Viral Change, a people Mobilizing Platform in organizations, a methodology that delivers large scale behavioural and cultural change. He has written the book, ‘Viral Change™, the alternative to slow, painful an unsuccessful management of change in organizations’ (2006, 2008) and its follow up ‘Homo Imitans, the art of social infection; viral change in action’.

He has also written 4 other management books on leadership, change and disruptive management innovation. Dr Herrero’s primary focus of work is the creation of cutting edge organizational architectures based upon three pillars: an Enabling Design, a Mobilizing Platform (Viral Change) and Leadership for Collective Action. These cutting-edge architectures - with a specific Behavioural DNA - cater for, and thrive in, complex and unpredictable environments. Although headquartered in the UK, The Chalfont Project’s international team of organization architects work with clients in the private and public sectors, across all geographies. Dr Leandro Herrero is a psychiatrist by background who, after medical practice and academia, spent years in top global managerial roles within companies in the UK and the US. As well as his medical and psychiatric qualifications, he holds a Masters in Business Administration and is a Fellow of several management bodies. He is also Executive Fellow at the Centre for the Future of Organization, Drucker School of Management. Dr Herrero is an international speaker on organizational challenges and writes a Daily Thoughts blog that has a large community of followers. In 2016 he was voted one of the Top Voices in the UK within the LinkedIn writers on management, leadership and change issues.

Ms Tina Joyce

Programme Director (Dublin), Institute of Leadership, RCSI

Tina has 16 experience working in leadership and management development in Ireland and internationally. She is a founding member of the Institute of Leadership and holds an MBA in Health Services Management from the Smurfit Business School, and an MSc in Microbiology. She is currently undertaking a PhD in Systems Leadership in Healthcare at the University of Exeter, UK and is a qualified executive coach. Tina is programme manager for two large scale national projects providing strategic leadership development programmes to over 1,000 senior managers and clinicians in acute and primary care and corporate health services.

Formerly she worked with the Irish Office for Health Management and was a member of the Interim HSE Change Management and Organisational Development team. During this time she was project manager for National Communication and Consultation programme. Tina was also responsible for supporting the newly formed primary care implementation teams and HSE Service Governance team. Tina has considerable experience working internationally in healthcare at a senior level. She was the senior project manager of the King Hamad commissioning team in the Kingdom of Bahrain and established master’s programmes in Jordan, Bahrain and Dubai, where she also commissioned the campus. She was academic director of the International Diploma in Humanitarian Assistance based in Geneva and Fordham University, New York. Tina was also a member of the RCSI research team that pioneered solar disinfection of drinking water in Africa and Malaysia. Her main areas of interest are leadership, management and organisational development, international and national health systems and policy.

Ms Rosarii Mannion National Director Human Resources, HSE

Rosarii Mannion has over 15 years of human resources experience including management experience in Community and Hospital Services in the HSE. She has held a number of senior management roles her most recent posts being Assistant National Director Human Resources, Dublin North East and Group HR Director in RCSI Hospitals. Rosarii is a Chartered Fellow of the CIPD, a qualified Mediator, Conflict Coach and holds a BA, HDip, MA and MS.

Ms Teresa Moore

Ms Liz Roche Area Director, Nursing and Midwifery Planning and Development, Dublin Mid Leinster

Liz is the Area Director of the Nursing and Midwifery Planning and Development Units in the former Dublin Mid-leinster geographical area and her role is to provide leadership, support excellence and build the capacity in nursing and midwifery both regionally and nationally in order to enhance patient care and service delivery. Prior to her current position within the Office of the Nursing and Midwifery Services Director, she worked as the Director in the NMPD in Palmerstown and prior to that she held a variety of clinical and nurse leadership posts in Acute, Primary Care and Mental Health within the National Health Service in London over 20 years.

Her passion for the development of the nursing and midwifery professions in order to improve patient care is evident from the variety of projects that she has led over the years. She currently leads a number of nursing and midwifery workforce planning, education and practice development projects. She represents the national office on a number of committees. Liz is an RGN and a RPN, has a degree in Health Services Management, and has masters’ degrees in Mental Health from Kings College London and HR Strategies from Dublin City University. In 2015 she completed a post graduate diploma in Advancing Healthcare Practice with the Open University.

Ms Mary Wynne Interim Nursing and Midwifery Services Director, ONMSD, HSE

Mary is currently the Interim Nursing and Midwifery

Services Director, HSE. She undertook her nursing and midwifery education in the Mater Misericordiae Hospital and the Rotunda Hospital respectively. Following an extensive and varied career in clinical practice in both voluntary and statutory services she graduated from UCD as a nurse tutor at the time of transition of nursing to graduate level education. Her subsequent career has comprised education, practice development, senior nurse management at Assistant Director and Director level in the acute sector, and since 2004 at Regional and Area Level in the HSE.

She has led on national nursing and midwifery development work since 2006. She was awarded an MBA in Health Services Management by UCD in 2008. As Chair of the ONMSD/NCCP Strategic Nursing Reference Group she led the development, and publication

and implementation of “A Strategy and Educational Framework for Nurses Caring for People with Cancer in Ireland” (2012). The breadth and depth of her professional experience has provided her with an insight into the challenges facing nurse and midwife leaders as well as nursing and midwifery’s pivotal role and contribution within the health service from patient care, service delivery, leadership and change management and educational perspectives.
