Hello and welcome to The Glasgow school of Art summer school Programme 2014. our new brochure aims to give you a broader picture of the Continuing Education Department, its lecturers and students.

This summer sees the introduction of the new world-class reid Building on renfrew street, designed by steven Holl Architects in collaboration with Glasgow-based JM Architects, placing it at the heart of The Glasgow school of Art’s Garnethill campus. This new building will house the school of Design and, as well as offering many public spaces such as a new shop, restaurant and galleries, it will give you the opportunity to view the Mackintosh Building from a new perspective. A number of our courses will take place in this new space, but if your course is in another building around campus you will still be able to visit and see the future of GsA.

Bursting with style and culture, Glasgow boasts a vibrant arts scene that regularly produces cutting edge work. At its heart is the internationally acclaimed Glasgow school of Art and the magnificent Mackintosh Building, which exudes a dynamic energy and can only stimulate your creativity when you walk through its the doors on renfrew street. This year Glasgow will also be the recipient of the world’s attention, hosting the 20th Commonwealth Games; the largest multi-sport event ever held in scotland.

We have created a programme of week-long courses covering a diverse range of subjects and mediums which can be suited to students trying a subject for the first time or for students wishing to enhance a current skill base. on our courses we aim to promote individual development by providing one-to-one tuition, which, in turn, is enhanced by peer learning within a group setting.

our tutors represent a wide spectrum of practicing artists who are either members of the GsA staff or invited lecturers drawn from the wider artistic community. The GsA summer school is a unique experience where you can learn new skills and challenge your visual thinking and approaches to creating art. We always aim to provide a relaxed and supportive atmosphere during your time with us, where younger and older students alike will have a challenging, enjoyable and rewarding experience. If you would like help choosing courses or have any questions about our summer school or other courses offered throughout the year, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Whether you are vising Glasgow for the first time or a regular visitor to the Mackintosh campus, we look forward to meeting you this summer.

…with monumental lines, severe, sheer cliffs of panelled glass and an air of unflinching modernism.

The interior, however, is one of space and light, of plain white walls, three huge internal chimneys of light, and studios and work spaces that aim to provide students with functional space and also ample light, air and a visual connection to other levels and studios within the building.

Built on a tight, restricted site with a clearly defined budget, the reid building is a world and more than 100 years away, in terms of its appearance and especially the materials from which it is made, from the Mackintosh building – “the Mack” – it faces. However, the architects of the reid building feel there is a clear relationship between the two. Chris McVoy, the senior partner at steven Holl Architects, who co-designed the building as “design architect” with Holl, said the whole building looks to the Mackintosh building for inspiration.

The architectural vision for the 11,000sq ft building was based, he says, on five concepts. The first, inspired by the huge studios of the Mackintosh building, was to base it around the main working space for design students: its studios and volumes of space they encompass.

secondly, these studio spaces had to be adaptable and have “great proportions and life”. so the plan of the building is simple: serried rows of large studios in a roughly rectangular pattern.

However, the third, and perhaps most important, guiding theme is also the building’s most important but least tangible material: light. The architects analysed Charles rennie Mackintosh’s masterpiece across the road and calculated he had found 20 ways of letting natural light into the building. “And light is steven Holl’s favourite material,” says McVoy.

From the outside, the reid building at the Glasgow school of Art resembles a half-turned green rubik’s cube…

Just as the Mackintosh building is an “architectural symphony of light”, the new building attempts to use light as its invisible superstructure.

so the most notable interior features of the building are the three mammoth “driven voids” of light, internal towers of space that run from the top of the building to its roots, poised at a discreet angle. These voids, made out of steel and concrete, bring natural light into the building, where, with the voids’ epic tubular forms cut into by squares and rectangles, they radiate light into the studio interiors.

In addition to light, they allow ventilation of the whole building. The voids provide remarkable views, of course - sitting at the foot of a shaft, one can stare up and see the (let’s be charitable) ever-changing Glasgow sky, as well as staff and students on other floors. The precipitous view down, especially from the top floor, is also notable, as well as slightly alarming.

‘Those three-storey windows Mackintosh designed in its library? They both push out of the building and come in, they hold the light. In fact, they are voids of light.’

“Initially, perhaps, the idea was to tear it down but steven looked at it. It is a fine Thirties building and, because it is in stone, it creates an interlocking effect with the Mack over the street. And it provides the students with their own space:

“JM Architects of Glasgow really led on the renovation of the union, and we should say the whole design was a 50:50 collaboration.”

There are design details inside the reid building that McVoy is delighted to point out: the often mammoth wooden doors, some cut at remarkable angles. on the top floor, jutting out from the silversmith studio, there is an impressive large window that hangs in mid-air, providing views west as well as straight down to the south side of the city.

There is 1000 Future Skies, the specially commissioned work by Turner Prize winner Martin Boyce, which adorns the entrance.

There is, if you choose to measure it, the use of the Golden ratio - the special number approximately equal to 1.618 that is found in geometry, art and architecture - throughout the proportions of the building.

“The technology we have these days - for the concrete, for the glass - Mackintosh could not have imagined and used in his day,” says McVoy, “just as we could not use stone in the way he did. But it is reacting to the Mack throughout, and also, we feel, gives a new perspective on that building. You can see the whole facade of his building from our windows: it provides a new way of seeing his masterpiece.”

The design of the driven voids is McVoy and Holl’s, but their inspiration came from Mackintosh, albeit from a detail that non-architects may have overlooked. “They actually come directly from the Mack,” says McVoy. “Those three-storey windows Mackintosh designed in its library? They both push out of the building and come in, they hold the light. In fact, they are voids of light.”

There is more to the light in the building beyond the voids: studios on the north side of the building have very large, inclined windows to maximise the “high-quality diffuse light” while those areas or spaces of the building that are less dependent on natural light, such as the refectory and offices, have been built on the south-facing side, and act “as a screen to control the light into the building”, adds McVoy. The element of light will also be caught and refracted by perhaps Glasgow’s first outdoor infinity pool.

The fourth key idea behind the new building was that the corridors, studios and other spaces inside should be open and permeable: that there would be few closed-off or discreet spaces not linked by a continuing pathway. They called this the “circuit of connection”. McVoy says the students and staff inside had to have spaces where chance meetings could take place, where they could sit and talk and make connections as they move through the building. so the stairs are often open, and there are alcoves and seating areas. “Circulation space is one of the crucial spaces. Nobody in here wants to use the lift (although there are some); instead it is all about the stairs at the social spaces.”

The stairs, and other stepped ramps, link all the major interior spaces: the sizeable lobby, the ground floor exhibition space, project spaces, the extensive lecture theatre in the basement, seminar rooms, studios, workshops (also in the basement) and green terraces, which are set into the south side of the building.

Finally, the fifth theme behind the design is that of maintaining a “connection to the street”. The Mack is raised from the street, its entrance up a flight of steps, but the architects wanted the public areas of the new building - the lobby, the gallery - to be easy to access.

The building also incorporates some of the old: the GsA student Association building and its Vic bar, housed in what McVoy says is a “fine thirties stone building” has remained, with an arm of the new reid building reaching over it and down its side, as if it is being given a 21st Century hug in glass and concrete.

‘Circulation space is one of the crucial spaces. Nobody in here wants to use the lift (although there are some); instead it is all about the stairs at the social spaces.’

‘Initially perhaps, the idea was to tear it down but Steven looked at it. It is a fine thirties building, and because it is in stone, it creates an interlocking effect with the Mack over the street. And it provides the students with their own space.’

With The glasgow school of Art Portfolio Preparation Course having recently received accreditation by the sCQF, awarding a gsA Award - Level 6 (60 Credits), we took the opportunity to speak to Joint Course Leaders deborah Holland and Joanie Jack about their involvement with the course, what potential students can expect to experience through their teaching and their backgrounds in art and design practices.

What was your background before you came to teach on the Portfolio Preparation Course?

Joanie Jack: Joanie Jack: I studied Design at The Glasgow school of Art specialising in Printed and Knitted Textiles, graduating in 1985 with a first class BA Honours. I was lucky to have the opportunity to show my collection at the rsA London where I was offered work with Missoni, near Milan, as a textile designer. I was responsible for a wide range of design work including printed and jacquard knitted fabrics for womenswear, menswear and fashion accessories; in addition my designs were used for furnishing collections and the like. When I returned to the uK in 1989 I worked freelance for many manufacturing companies, later becoming Head of Design at sekers Fabrics, 1990-1994, responsible for managing and leading a team of designers in the contract interior market; combining weave and printed textiles.

The company also had links with various art schools, design colleges, textile associations and the rsA student Award school. During this time I was able to gain teaching experience in different universities and colleges as a visiting lecturer at many institutions including Central st Martins and the royal College of Art. since october 2000 to the present I have been teaching part-time on the Portfolio Preparation Course and have been involved in its development and growth and was appointed as the Joint Course Leader in 2011. I continue to work freelance on educational and research projects and I produce design work for surface pattern and decoration that are translated into three dimensional forms.

deborah Holland: I studied Art at The slade school of Fine Art, London from 1988 -1992, where I received a first class BA Honours. After graduating I exhibited in several exhibitions nationally and internationally, most notably at Camerawork, London and Bricks and Kicks, Vienna. During this period I also worked at The slade, teaching on their summer school. In 1994 I moved to Glasgow, where I worked in the Department of Continuing Education at The Glasgow school of Art, as a tutor on the Day and Evening Course Programme and summer school which I also co-ordinated.

‘We’re looking for students who are excited and enthused about the prospect of becoming

artists or designers.’

I taught a wide range of Art and Design before becoming Head of the Department in 1996. subsequently I became a Project Manager and tutor for the Department of Widening Participation. In 2011, I was appointed as the Joint Course Leader for The Portfolio Preparation Course.

Throughout my time at GsA I have continued my practice as an artist - I represented Britain at the steirischer Herbst festival in Austria, as well as participating in numerous national and international exhibitions, such as a two person show at the Collective Gallery, Edinburgh and Gertrude street, Melbourne, Australia. My work was reviewed and written about in several magazines, specifically Art Monthly, Tate etc, Third Text and Make Magazines.

As an artist I’ve made work in a variety of media, from large scale paintings, prints, drawings and sculptures to photographs, videos, sound works and most recently clothing. In all these works I’ve been interested in exploring how our identities are formed, specifically through my own contradictory responses to such forms as advertising, television, film, fashion and art. My most recent work involves the development of objects which blur the lines between fashion accessory and wearable art works. In my practice as an artist, an overriding concern has been to expand the potential audience for art and this has also impacted upon my work in education.

What do you look for in potential students?

dH: We’re looking for students who are clearly excited and enthused about the prospect of becoming artists or designers. They also need to demonstrate to us that they possess both an open, inquisitive attitude to studying art and design, and an independent, serious and disciplined approach to developing the quality and ambition of their work. The combination of these qualities is essential in the development of a successful portfolio.

JJ: We look for individuals with energy and commitment that can draw, are imaginative and are ready to explore possibilities within their work in an ambitious enthusiastic manner. Image 1&2: Joanie Jack

What do you expect from students during the course?

JJ: We expect our students to be eager to learn, be open and honest to exploration and to the development of themselves and their work by embracing the structure and content of the course and working hard towards their goals.

dH: We work very hard to ensure the students are given as much support and opportunity to develop their art and design work. We expect them in turn to treat studying on the course in an industrious and conscientious manner, committing wholeheartedly to the programme by immersing themselves in being creative and imaginative. This commitment involves them opening themselves up to new ways of making and thinking about art and design. We hope the students will be excited about the possibilities of developing what they do creatively, and to think about how this could be developed in the future once they successfully enter a Degree Programme at Art school.

What should students expect from the course?

dH: The course has been very carefully developed so that the structure gives the students a comprehensive experience of a wide range of fine art and design practices, which are highly relevant to the preparation of a portfolio for application to art school. During the course students will develop both core skills and a range of practical and conceptual approaches relevant for producing an original, imaginative body of work for a portfolio.

JJ: students can expect to have the opportunity and encouragement to create an incredible amount of work within a short space of time, which enables them to reach their potential for moving onto an undergraduate, HE or FE course.

How do you feel students benefit from the Portfolio Preparation day Course?

JJ: students benefit from the core content and pace of the course and the location and resources available within the GsA campus and the city. They also benefit from the experience of the staff and contact with a broad range of people who will inspire, challenge and encourage them to strengthen their approach and outcome. The work they produce is ultimately what allows each student to gain a further foothold on their educational path and future career.

dH: students on our course learn a lot about themselves as artists and designers as a result of studying in a studio environment within The Glasgow school of Art.

The opportunity to experience an intense period of concentrated study, within which they are free to develop new work and ideas, is invaluable. regular discussion also takes place about the work created between the students and teaching team, which improves student confidence in their own skills and abilities, and also prepares them for further in-depth study at Art school and their creative futures.

our course has an excellent success rate when it comes to student admission onto Degree Courses. For example this year 92% of our students have been offered places at Art schools across the uK.

Applications are now open for the Portfolio Preparation Course for 2014/15.

‘Students on our course learn a lot about themselves as artists and designers as a result of studying in a studio environment within The Glasgow School of Art.’
