Kelly Smith is a licensed Psychological Associate. She received her master’s degree in clinical psychology in 1987. She has worked with dually diagnosed children and adults in a variety of settings including a state developmental center, group homes, and assisted living. She has worked with Mesquite ISD for the past 15 years as their Behavior Specialist. She regularly consults with teachers, counselors, administrators, and parents while creating individualized behavior
intervention plans for implementation in the classroom and at home. Kelly is a firm believer in “Love and Logic” techniques and promotes this program across her district.

Young students need multiple models to develop concepts and skills with whole numbers. This session explores the sequence of teaching early number concepts with begins with skills of subitizing and counting, continuing with the concept of place value. The set, length, and number line models are used to show how place value of 2- and 3-digit numbers is developed along with the essential skills of comparing, ordering, and rounding. Rob has over twenty years in elementary education, including experience as a classroom teacher, instructional coach, and content specialist. For the past four years, he has facilitated learning for teachers. He has a passion for learning, teaching for understanding, and promoting quality mathematics instruction.

During our time together, I will be walking you through how to design a PBL while modeling how you would facilitate that PBL with your students. If possible, please bring your TEKS and an electronic device. PBL design starts with the TEKS. I will be providing you with a plethora of resources for you to take back to your classroom, including project design documents as well as tools to help facilitate the project. True essential questions have no right or wrong answers, but allow students to think about content in different ways. This allows for great class discussions IF the teacher knows how to direct the responses by prompting or asking more questions. This art of questioning comes easily to some people, but most of us need to prepare for engagement with the students. These suggested strategies will help you motivate your students, despite the time of year...beginning of school year, before holiday breaks or Spring Break, to even tackling the senioritis monster that tends to “eat” many of our students alive near the end of the year. Wouldn’t you prefer to build an assessment that is a quality learning experience for students and a more authentic assessment tool for teachers? Constructed response items ask students to produce an answer, not just select one. Students construct and create “support with evidence” they must DO something to answer the question. The presenters will share many items in order to compare constructed response and closed items, align to standards, illustrate connections to instruction, and address scoring. “Make and Take” each music teacher will come with a manipulative that they have made (solfege disks, word wall words, dynamic terms, tempo terms, think/sing paddles, etc.) and the materials for the other teachers to make that manipulative. This workshop is for people who are seeking to RENEW their CPI certification. Non-Violent CPI Training is a prerequisite (and must have been taken within two years to be eligible for the Refresher training). New legislation passed regarding Seclusion and Restraint, which took effect on September 1, 2012. This legislation requires all schools to have at least one staff member trained in appropriate seclusion and restraint techniques. CPI Training is designed for people who are involved with students in potentially aggressive situations. This may include teachers, paraprofessionals, administrators, school psychologists, and guidance counselors. Each participant will receive materials and a certificate upon successful completion of all components of the training. Participants should wear comfortable clothing and closed-toe shoes.

Constructed response items ask students to produce an answer, not just select one. Students construct and create “support with evidence” they must DO something to answer the question.
