In this 3 hr. course, we will look at how to design and facilitate a PBL. This will be an interactive course and my goal is for you to have a framework of a PBL ready to go when we finish. During our time together, I will be walking you through how to design a PBL while modeling how you would facilitate that PBL with your students. If possible, please bring your TEKS and an electronic device. PBL design starts with the TEKS. I will be providing you with a plethora of resources for you to take back to your classroom, including project design documents as well as tools to help facilitate the project. I will also provide a great deal of electronic resources to help you with designing and facilitating the PBL. Finally, I will provide you with examples of PBL’s that I have done or that I have worked with other teachers to create.

True essential questions have no right or wrong answers, but allow students to think about content in different ways. This allows for great class discussions IF the teacher knows how to direct the responses by prompting or asking more questions. This art of questioning comes easily to some people, but most of us need to prepare for engagement with the students. We will demonstrate the effective use of essential questions in the classroom and role play how teachers can prompt the classes to get the discussions to hit the learning targets – even if it isn’t a bullseye!

Explore various classroom strategies to help motivate your students. These suggested strategies will help you motivate your students, despite the time of year...beginning of school year, before holiday breaks or Spring Break, to even tackling the senioritis monster that tends to “eat” many of our students alive near the end of the year. These strategies aim at facilitating meaningful and effective group work as well as supporting and reinforcing individual student efforts; while simultaneously offering reward system(s) for both extrinsic and intrinsic learners. Some strategies are closely linked to various types of Kagan strategies, while others are strictly created “off the cuff” with the teacher proactively adjusting to the needs and demands of their perspective classes. Creating a healthy learning environment and instilling/maintaining great classroom management are beneficial extras gained from these suggested m o t i v a t i o n a l strategies.

In every classroom, a few students are academic sponges. They soak up knowledge and still want more. However, in the same class are students who find learning a struggle. These students expect failure, they fear being wrong in front of their friends. They find academics as unimportant in their life plans, doubt the role of the school to prepare them for the future, or experience boredom. Differentiation asks teachers to know their students well so they can provide each one with experiences and tasks that will improve learning. Teachers who accept responsibility for students success seek ways to invite students to take a risk. This session will provide tools for teachers to get to know their students. Wouldn’t you prefer to build an assessment that is a quality learning experience for students and a more authentic assessment tool for teachers? Constructed response items ask students to produce an answer, not just select one. Students construct and create “support with evidence” they must DO something to answer the question. The presenters will share many items in order to compare constructed response and closed items, align to standards, illustrate connections to instruction, and address scoring. The audience will dissect the standards, make connections to assessment questions, and modify closed response items into constructed response items.
